Production and consumption situation of China's acrylonitrile industry

China's acrylonitrile industry has enjoyed a steady expansion during 2008–2012. According to CCM’s report Market of Acrylonitrile in China, issued in February 2013, the domestic acrylonitrile capacity has exceeded 1.3 million t/a as of January 2013, while the consumption volume has been over 1.5 million tonnes, which means China still needs to import a considerable amount of acrylonitrile every year to fill the gap between supply and demand.

At present, acrylonitrile is mainly used in the production of acrylic fiber, ABS, PAM, acrylamide, NBR, etc. Among which, acrylic fiber is still the largest consumer of acrylonitrile, though its consumption demand for acrylonitrile has been dropping during 2008–2012.

As for the other two downstream fields, namely ABS and PAM, they are expected to show remarkable performance in terms of output and consumption volume. ABS is even estimated to surpass acrylic fiber to be the largest consumer of acrylonitrile in China in the future, given its increasing growth of output.

In the report, CCM focuses on the production situation and consumption pattern of China's acrylonitrile industry during 2008–2012, and forecasts its development in the next five years. In “Production situation of acrylonitrile in China during 2008–2012” part, readers can obtain the basic information of acrylonitrile production and producers, geographical distribution of production and new projects or expansion programs in relation to acrylonitrile production.

The report has also revealed the import and export situation of acrylonitrile in China during 2011–2012. The findings are concluded by CCM’s researchers basing on a large amount of data sourced from China Customs. Through these findings readers can get a lot of intelligences on China’s acrylonitrile industry, such as major exporters and importers, export destinations, export and import volume and value. With respect to the consumption situation of acrylonitrile in China, CCM will give readers a detailed elaboration of the consumption pattern of acrylonitrile in main end segments, including acrylic fiber, ABS, acrylamide, NBR, etc.

Production of propanil during 1970s and 1990s

In 2012, the export volume of Chinese homemade propanil is sharply increasing, due to rising overseas demand, especially from Africa. In the next few years, this trend will continue, but growth is predicted not to increase as much as it did in 2012. There is still a chance for the propanil industry to further change its gloomy situation before 2012 if its future export remains stable. Actually, the domestic supply of propanil in China far exceeds its demand. Chinese propanil import is so small that CCM does not conduct import analysis on it.

In the 1970s, the former Shenyang Pesticide Factory was engaged in producing propanil. Then the production was stopped for a long time for some particular reason. In the 1990s, a large number of manufacturers were engaging in propanil production. However, the production was unstable and many of them had given up their production during these years. Later, some companies took a fancy to the market potential of propanil in China and set up production lines or enlarged their production capacities. Thus after 2000, the production of propanil developed rapidly in China.

As an old variety of herbicide, propanil has been produced in China for 50 years. There were four pioneer propanil producers in China: Formerly Wushun Pesticide Factory (500 t/a 20% EC) Formerly Hegang Pesticide Factory (200 t/a 20% EC) Formerly Hengyang Pesticide Factory Formerly Beijing Double-Bridge Pesticide Factory. However, little progress had been made in the following decades. The latter two manufacturers even closed or changed into other enterprises.

In some foreign countries, use of propanil is forbidden or restricted. In July 2003, Dow AgroSciences LLC, RiceCo LLC and Agrilliance LLC voluntarily asked to amend or cancel their product registrations to terminate the use of propanil on small grains. According to Commission Implementing Regulation (EU) No. 1078/2011, the placing of the active substance propanil products on the market doesn't have approval in the EU because of health concerns.

Production and Market of Propanil in China is CCM's second edition of its report on the Chinese propanil industry, completed in April 2013. This intelligent report attaches importance to the following parts:
1.       Production summary of propanil (its capacity, output and key manufacturers) and consumption summary by volume in China during 2010-2012.
2.       Detailed study of propanil's upstream industry (its supply, manufacturers, price, etc.)
3.       Price of propanil during 2007-2012 and the export of propanil technical and formulations during 2011-2012.
4.       Forecast of the Chinese propanil industry to 2017.
5.       Key factors influencing the development of propanil in China.

Import volume and price of L-phe decrease in Oct. 2012

Recently, CCM has come up with its latest report of Sweeteners China News 1301, in which, an article regarding the import volume and price of L-phe was highlighted. The complete report comes as follows:

According to data from China Customs, both import volume and price of L-phenylalanine (L-phe), a key raw material of aspartame, decreased in Oct. 2012. In detail, import volume of L-phe was about 240 tonnes in Oct. 2012 (the second smallest one during Jan. - Oct. of 2012 and only larger than 212 tonnes in Feb.), decreasing by about 63% compared with that in Sept. 2012. At the same time, the average import price of L-phe decreased to about USD7,100/t in Oct. 2012, which was the lowest one in the first ten months of 2012.

Actually, because domestic supply of L-phe increased in 2012, domestic demand for imported L-phe decreased at the same time, and Oct. 2012 was no exception. Two domestic producers, namely Fujian Maidan Biology Group Co., Ltd. (Fujian Maidan, the largest L-phe producer in China) and Hebei Anminuo Amino Co., Ltd. (a new L-phe player), have launched their L-phe projects with a total capacity of 11,000t/a in Q1 2012, which means domestic supply of L-phe increased after Q1 2012. The import volume of L-phe in China was about 240 tonnes in Oct. of 2012, which was not only smaller than that in Sept. 2012, but also smaller than 270 tonnes (Oct. 2010) and 490 tonnes (Oct. 2011) respectively.

Besides, it is believed that the decreased export volume of aspartame in Oct. 2012 also has a negative effect on the import volume of L-phe. Most importers of L-phe were domestic aspartame producers, such as Changzhou Niutang Chemical Plant Co., Ltd. (Changzhou Niutang), whose import volume of L-phe accounted for about 40% of the nation's total in Jan. - Oct. of 2012. According to China Customs, export volume of aspartame decreased by 22.37% to about 830 tonnes in Oct. 2012 from about 1,070 tonnes in Sept. 2012. Export volume of aspartame of Changzhou Niutang also decreased to 283 tonnes in Oct. 2012 from 382 tonnes in Sept. 2012.

As a result, foreign L-phe producers actively declined their products' prices in order to keep their market shares in China. According to data from China Customs, the average import price of L-phe from Japan, which is one main import origin of L-phe for domestic aspartame producers, was about USD6,200/t in Oct. 2012, which was the lowest one in the first ten months of 2012. But import volume of L-phe from Japan increased sharply to over 91 tonnes in Oct. 2012 from about 8 tonnes in Sept. 2012. The huge volume of imported L-phe from Japan is also a factor that dragged down the average import price of L-phe in Oct. 2012.

It is predicted that import volume and price of L-phe will both continue to decrease in the near future. More L-phe projects in China will be launched at the beginning of 2013, which will increase domestic supply of L-phe. For example, Changzhou Niutang is building a L-phe project with total capacity of 10,000t/a in Xinjiang since April 2011, which is expected to be finished at the beginning of 2013. Therefore, foreign L-phe producers may continue to decline their prices to maintain their position in China.

Expanding Pentaerythritol Market in China

Driven by the rapid development of China’s economy in the past few years, China’s pentaerythritol industry has witnessed a fast development. With pentaerythritol capacity accounting for more than 50% of the global total, China has been the top production base of pentaerythritol in the world. According to CCM International’s investigation, the output of pentaerythritol is 222,000 tonnes in China in 2011, up by 0.7% over 2010.

The main end use segments of pentaerythritol are alkyd resin, polyurethane, rosin pentaerythritol ester, lubricant, etc. China's automobile industry and building industry developed quickly in the past few years, resulting in the increasing demand for coating & paint, and China became the largest coating & paint producer in the world in 2009. High Reliance on Imported Soybean Affects China's Edible Oil Security

According to statistics from China Customs, in the first half of 2012, China imported 29.05 million tonnes of soybean, up 29.05% over H1 2011. Since the planting area of soybean in China has decreased this year, it's estimated that China's import of soybean will set a new record in 2012, and the high growth of import volume in H1 2012 is a signal, according to CCM’s July issue of AgriChina Investor.

Soybean is a major source of edible oil in China. With the increasing demand for edible oil from urban residents and the declining planting area of soybean, China's import of soybean has been increasing year by year over the past decade.

Since 2003, China has surpassed the European Union and become the largest soybean importer in the world. In 2010, China's soybean import volume hit a historic high of 54.80 million tonnes. In 2011, it decreased slightly by 3.9% to 52.64 million tonnes. The import volume of soybean in China climbed by 90% from 2004 to 2010.

According to the data from China's National Grain and Oils Information Center, the annual consumption volume of edible oil in China reached 20.5kg per person in 2011.

China mainly imports soybean from the U.S., Brazil and Argentina, where the GMO soybeans are planted the most extensively. The U.S., a country with the largest planting areas of soybean in the world, has supplied about a quarter of its soybean output to China.

Imported soybean now accounts for about 80% of China's total soybean consumption. Compared with more than 50 million tonnes of imported soybean every year, China's domestic output of soybean has been about 12 million tonnes per year in recent years.

Driven by the increasing urbanization rate and hence the increasing demand from urban residents in China, China's soybean import volume is expected to maintain an uptrend in the next 10 to 15 years. According to a forecast from the U.S. Department of Agriculture, China's import volume of soybean is expected to go up by 62% to 90 million tonnes per year over the next 10 years.

China's soybean growing industry has been greatly affected by the increasing import volume of soybean. As imported soybean has advantages in cost (because of high farming efficiency in major soybean planting countries) and high oil yield (because of the adoption of GMO seed; but GMO soybean is prohibited to be planted in China), domestic soybean growing industry is beaten by imported product, and many Chinese farmers are unwilling to grow soybean.

The decreasing output of domestic soybean and the increasing soybean import also impact China's oil crushing industry. It was reported that more than 80% of the soybean oil crushers in Heilongjiang Province, China's largest soybean production base, have closed down due to the decline in both planting area and output of soybean in the region in 2011, and many of the soybean oil producers have been relocated to coastal areas and begun to use imported soybean as their raw materials.

The heavy reliance on imported soybean brings great risks to the food security of China and the price stability of edible oil. Now many foreign companies have extended and integrated the industrial chain of soybean in China, thus dominating the pricing rights of China's edible oil market; more than 75% market share of soybean oil market in China is controlled by overseas brands. Most price rise of edible oil in the end market in recent years are initiated by overseas companies. Edible oil's price, which is included in China's CPI contributing factor, is highly related to society sustainability.

As soybean is not included in grain in Chinese government's statistical system, the high reliance on soybean import may be ignored if focus is only put on China's grain sufficiency rate. Many experts suggest that grain security-related governmental departments in China should concern more about the soybean import.
