Supply of sodium borohydride in China appears superfluous at present

In China, sodium borohydride is widely used in various industries, including pharmaceuticals, agrochemicals, intermediates, fine chemicals, electronic products, paper making, water treatment and perfume. Among them, pharmaceuticals industry is the largest application field, taking up 73% of consumption volume of sodium borohydride in 2013, which is different from overseas markets where paper making is the dominant field. Its consumption in electronic products, paper making, water treatment and perfume is quite small.

CCM recently finished a report named Sodium Borohydride Market in China, which reveals the production and consumption of sodium borohydride in China during 2010-2013 through the following key aspects:
- Key findings and market dynamics in the sodium borohydride industry
- Production situation of sodium borohydride (mainly during 2009-2013), including capacity, output, price, technology and competition among producers
- Consumption situation of sodium borohydride during 2010-2013 and introduction to major end-use segments
- Forecast on production and consumption of sodium borohydride during 2014-2018

The supply of sodium borohydride in China is superfluous at present, with just a 42.0% operating rate in 2013. Despite a steady increase in the past few years, the consumption volume of sodium borohydride in China is still small. As a result, there were no new entrants in the industry during 2010-2013.

Compared with 2003-2009, the production situation of sodium borohydride in 2010-2013 showed some differences. During 2010-2013, the capacity kept relatively stable at about 6,000 t/a with a CAGR of about 0.3%, while the corresponding growth rate in 2003-2009 was as high as 39.2%. In terms of output, it posted a CAGR of 25.9% in 2003-2009, which became merely about 8.8% in the past four years.

Currently, China is basically self-sufficient in sodium borohydride. Compared with its domestic output, the import volume is small. Many end-users in China claimed that they use homemade sodium borohydride, which is able to meet their demand both in quality and price. Besides, China exports a small quantity of the product to overseas markets.

The report is the 2rd edition of CCM’s series surveys covering China’s sodium borohydride industry. If you want to know more details of the report, please visit: http://www.cnchemicals.com/Product/Report/2359/Sodium-Borohydride-Market-in-China-Edition(2)

Tricyclazole technical's supply in China a bit tight recently

According to Fungicides China News issued by CCM in July, the domestic supply of tricyclazole technical, one of the conventional triazole fungicides, is a bit tight recently mainly due to the under-capacity operation among major manufacturers in China, such as Hangzhou Southern Suburb Chemical Co., Ltd. (Southern Suburb Chemical) and Jiangsu Fengdeng Pesticide Co., Ltd. (Fengdeng Pesticide).

In detail, Southern Suburb Chemical, the largest manufacturer of tricyclazole technical in China, is conducting related inspection and maintenance for its production equipment with the arrival of the high temperature season, including tricyclazole technical production lines, to ensure its safe production in the future. This directly reduced the company's production of tricyclazole technical. Moreover, some foreign orders of tricyclazole products were scheduled by the company in priority order.

As a leading company in the domestic tricyclazole technical industry, Southern Suburb Chemical has been ranking first place in both capacity and output of this fungicide in recent years. In detail, the company's capacity of tricyclazole technical maintained at 4,000t/a in the recent three years. Moreover, its output of the product reached about 1,600 tonnes in 2011, far exceeding that of other domestic companies. It is conceivable that the under-capacity operation of Southern Suburb Chemical has already brought a major negative impact on the domestic supply/demand of tricyclazole technical.

Moreover, Fengdeng Pesticide's normal production of tricyclazole technical was seriously affected mainly due to some problems in relation to the environmental protection and the land requisition. Under the circumstances, the company's production of this fungicide was intermittent, making it difficult to ensure product orders especially from domestic pesticide formulation manufacturers.

It is well known that Fengdeng Pesticide is mainly engaged in the production and sales of triazole fungicides in China, and its capacity of tricyclazole technical reaches around 1,000t/a in 2013, ranking into the top three in China. The output its tricyclazole technical, one of the company's major products, hit about 500 tonnes in 2011, which brought it handsome profits. However, Fengdeng Pesticide confronted a dilemma caused by the environmental protection problem with the strict environmental protection policies from the local government and the increasing environmental protection consciousness of people.

With the tight supply of tricyclazole technical in the domestic market, its ex-factory price witnessed a rise to a certain extent in the recent few months of 2013. Specifically, the ex-factory price of tricyclazole 95% TC climbed to about USD9,563/t in June 2013, up 2.54% and 4.43% respectively compared with those in May and Jan. 2013. It is estimated that the tight supply of tricyclazole technical will be alleviated with the ending of the export peak of fungicides and the ex-factory price of this triazole fungicide will see a slight fall back in the near future.

Argentina will get the biggest corn production in 13 years

On Feb. 14, 2013, according to the Buenos Aries Cereal Exchange, Argentina will harvest a record production of corn at 25 million tonnes in the season of 2012/13. If this estimation comes true, the production of corn will be 16.3% higher than 21.5 million tonnes in the previous season.

Besides the Buenos Aries Cereal Exchange, the US Department of Agriculture (USDA) even estimated that the production of corn in Argentina will reach 27 million tonnes in 2012/13. Be it 25 million tonnes or 27 million tonnes, the estimation of corn production in Argentina in 2012/13 will be the highest in 13 years.

Although the production of corn in Argentina will break a record in 2012/13, the planting area of corn is lower than that in the previous season. According to data from the Buenos Aries Cereal Exchange, the planting area of corn is about 3.6 million ha. In 2012/13, suffering a decline of approximately 15% compared with that in 2011/12.

In fact, some regions in Argentina suffered from the drought before Jan. 2013 and high thermal records. These factors would cause the losses in yield potential of crops. However, as the rainfall comes in late Jan. 2013, it improves the soil conditions and encourages the development of crops.

With the record production of corn expected in Argentina, the local government will boost the corn exports in 2012/13. Some experts think that it will increase the corn supply in the world, thereby helping ease the global corn price. However, the technical manager of the Federation of Agriculture and Livestock of Mato Grosso (Famato) considers that the expected increasing exports of corn in Argentina could not have a great effect on the international market.

According to the data from USDA, Argentina is the third largest exporter of corn in the world, behind Brazil and the US. The export volume of corn will reach 19.5 million tonnes in Argentina in 2012/13, accounting for an approximate 20% of world's total corn export volume and 72% of Argentina's total corn production in 2012/13. But in Brazil, the total export volume of corn is expected to just account for about 34% of the total domestic production in 2012/13. It means that even if Argentina exports all of its corn production, any effect on the international market should be very limited.

Phosphate projects in Tunisia and Togo were also in full swing

Since the Tunisian government started the Sra Ouertane phosphate project in 2009, it has attracted many tenderers to join the project, including National Mineral Development Co., Vale SA, etc. According to the initiate scheme for the project, it designed a 4,000,000t/a phosphorus ore production line to provide the phosphate compound fertilizer (DAP, MAP, TSP) production line with feedstock, according to CCM’s January issue of Phosphorus Industry China Monthly Report.

In addition, Togo is also pushing forward a mega phosphate project in an orderly way—the Togo carbonated Phosphate Project (''Togo Project''). Recently, the government of Togo has ushered in its third tender for Togo Project—Elenilto, on the heels of Sultan Corporation (Sultan) and Balamara Resources Limited (Balamara).

Togo Project is targeted at developing a carbonated phosphate mine with reserve of two billion tonnes in Togo, which is contributed to reviving phosphate industry of Togo. In accordance with Elenilto's plan, it designed a capacity of 5,000,000t/a of phosphate rock exploitation for the first stage of Togo Project, which could be raised to 10,000,000t/a in the next stage. After that, these phosphate rocks would be applied for producing downstream phosphate fertilizer, e.g. DAP and MAP.

What is the key target of Chinese pesticide industry in the next five years?

With over 60 years' development, China has become the biggest pesticide production base and also a huge pesticide consumer market in the world.

The amount of grain per capita in China continued improving in 60 years, but it is just close to the world average, and much lower than that in developed countries, it can be said that the future per capita demand for food will continue to upgrade. China's total population, even under the current population policy, will continue to grow until 2025. As a result, China's domestic demand for food will continue to grow, the demand for corresponding agricultural materials supplies will also increase.

The Chinese pesticide consumption growth is expected to go on. China’s average pesticide spending is expected to be more than ¥700/ha in 2016, while the industry output value is expected to reach ¥186 billion in 2012 according to the current sales price. Counting food demand, planting area, planting structure and the income of the farmers together, the pesticide spending per unit area in the report is a comprehensive reflection of the influencing factors of the long-term consumption of pesticides.

Chinese government now is actively raising the overall industrial strength of domestic pesticide industry by means of releasing stricter policies in environmental protection, heightening industry entrance threshold and phasing out highly toxic and highly residual pesticide varieties, etc.

Overview of Pesticide Industry in China 2012-2016 is CCM's summary report on Chinese pesticide industry. This study explores market landscape and competition of Chinese pesticide industry and is comprised of two major sections: Historical description—a full market commentary provides a summary comprehension on Chinese pesticide history. Development situation is presented in ways of industrial dynamic and market supply/demand. Future forecast—expertise analysis provides the most credible forecast on pesticides in the coming five years (2012-2016).

Fertilizer biweekly report to lead you to know the latest Chinese market news

On Aug. 22, 2012, after a long negotiation of 19 years, Russia formally entered World Trade Organization (WTO) and promised that it would open its markets of industrial products and agricultural produce to the WTO members, and its average tariff will be gradually lowered to 6.0% in 2015 from 9.5% in 2012. The trading environment between Russia and China will be improved further, which is conducive to potash import from Russia in the future.

Domestic fertilizer market inevitably suffers from oversupply and weak demand, resulting in the fact that the inventory of the fertilizer manufacturers stays at a high level and domestic market price of fertilizer has shown a decreasing trend in recent months. However, affected by the depressed international urea market, there is not any export transaction even if domestic urea granules ex-factory price has been below USD311.7/t - USD314.8/t. When Indian urea Invite Public Bidding is held in late September 2012, will the domestic price increase slightly?

As domestic soil fertility has obviously declined due to the excessive use of chemical fertilizer, the Chinese government issued a series of policies about strengthening the management of arable land in June and July 2012, aiming to strengthen the supervision of arable land protection with concrete action, so as to improve the soil fertility of China's farmland. In July 2012, General Office of Hubei provincial government released a notification, the Implementation of Structural Adjustment and Upgrade of Fertilizer Industry in Hubei Province, claiming that the management of new project access and elimination of backward production facilities should be carefully implemented during the 12th Five-Year (2011-2015)Plan period. Thus, a series of regulations of industrial upgrading arose in the 12th Five-Year (2011-2015) Plan in 2012, what are they? And what will they impact?

China Fertilizer Biweekly Report published by CCM, covers the latest dynamics and hottest information on China's fertilizer market. With columns of Expert column, Perspective on market, Policy, Planting environment, Brief news and Price update, it helps you make wiser business decisions and capture good investment opportunities more quickly. The report aims to help you master fertilizer industry trend analysis on the characteristics of the development of China’s fertilizer industry, stage of development, the balance between supply and demand, competition pattern, economic operation, the main competitive enterprise, investment and financing conditions, which is also to provide information support for the judgments of the future development of the fertilizer industry.

Zirconium Demand Rising with Tight Supply

Zirconium sands from zirconium mines are widely used in production of various zirconium products, such as ZrSiO4, ZrOCI2, ZrO2. The consumption market of zirconium is huge. Ceramics, foundry applications, opacifiers, and refractories are the leading end uses for zironium products. Other end uses of zirconium products include abrasives, chemicals, metal alloys and welding rod coatings.

The demand of zirconium is greatly driven by the boosting consumption market, while its supply is tight. According to CCM International’s coming report Global Survey of Zirconium, total zirconium reserves are about 52 million tonnes in the world. Although zirconium is abundant in the world, it’s still short of supply since almost all the zirconium ores are associated ores, thus it’s difficult to be fully utilized.

Some substitutes of zirconium have been developed in recent years. For example, chromite and olivine can be used to replace zircon in some foundry applications. Spinel refractories can also substitute zircon in certain high-temperature applications.

Increasing number of investors pay attention to zirconium industry and more plans for zirconium mine exploration are under way in Australia, South Africa, Mozambique, etc.
Some policies have an influence on global zirconium industry. For instance, South Africa has promulgated series of mineral regulations to encourage foreign investors to explore mines. This industry is believed to have a bright future.

More details will be presented in the report. If you are interested in it, please feel free to contact us at econtact@cnchemicals.com.
