Huge Polycarbonate Consumption Market in China

As a major consumer of polycarbonate around the world, China has to import a large amount of polycarbonate every year. In 2010, 1,264,253 tonnes of polycarbonate is imported to China, accounting for over 80% of the total supply.

China’s polycarbonate consumption grows rapidly in the past years. In China, polycarbonate is mainly used in the production of electronic and electrical components, automotive components, construction materials, drinking bottles and food containers, optical disks, etc. Electronic and electrical components are always the largest consumption field of polycarbonate, occupying 38.56% of its total consumption in 2010. And automotive components are the second largest consumption field of polycarbonate in 2010. It is estimated that the consumption of polycarbonate in the top three fields will keep at a high growth rate in the coming five years.

How about the detailed consumption situation of polycarbonate in each downstream product in China in 2010? What is the import situation of polycarbonate in the past years, and how about the detailed import situation of polycarbonate in 2010? Why China has to import large amount of polycarbonate every year?

Demand of Polycarbonate Keeps Increasing in China

The demand for polycarbonate (PC) has kept rapid growth in recent years in China. China imports massive polycarbonate annually. The poor production capacity and increasing domestic demand drive China to import a large amount of polycarbonate.

Most domestic polycarbonate producers have been washed out in the past years due to laggard technology. As of September 2011, only three active producers are engaged in the production of polycarbonate in China. Two are wholly foreign owned enterprises, namely Bayer (Shanghai) Polymer Co., Ltd. and Teijin Polycarbonate China Ltd.; another one is the only domestic producer, namely Chongqing Changfeng Chemical Industry Co., Ltd., with a small capacity of 5,000t/a.

The entry of overseas companies boosts the production capacity of polycarbonate to some extent. Total capacity of polycarbonate has reached 360,000t/a in China, with the output of 276,000 tonnes in 2010. But the output of polycarbonate always fails to meet the demand in China every year. Thus, a large amount of polycarbonate needs to be imported.

According to CCM International’s survey, the consumption of polycarbonate in China is expected to keep growing in the coming five years. That means China hungers for polycarbonate. The demand of polycarbonate continues to keep growing in the future.

All the data and findings are extracted from CCM’s report, entitled Survey of Polycarbonate Market in China. If you are interested in it, please feel free to contact us at econtact@cnchemicals.com.

Is It Possible to Transfer China’s Glyphosate Technical Capacity

Glyphosate is one of the most commonly used herbicides in the market today. As the largest production base of glyphosate, China experienced irrational expansion in 2007 and 2008, but the whole glyphosate industry has been undergoing depressed glyphosate market since late 2008.

Some people remark whether there is an industrial transfer globally, which could help release China's overcapacity and improvement of world's glyphosate price. CCM International has done research on the possibility of glyphosate technical's capacity transfer.

All findings are recorded in the report of Global Commercial Opportunities Derived from Glyphosate Industry. Some results are:
1) It is impossible (or little possibility) to launch new glyphosate technical production line by using original starting material DEA (or glycine, IDAN) in overseas countries in the future 5~10 years. In other words, it's inadvisable to invest such glyphosate technical production lines.
2) It is possible to launch glyphosate production line by using PMIDA as the starting raw material in the future 5~10 years, but the possibility is relatively low.
3) There is low possibility of China's industrial transfer from Southeast China to Western China.

This report also focuses on the following aspects:
  -Analysis of
supply and demand of glyphosate technical, 2006-2020;
  -Introduction and
comparison of different production routes of glyphosate;
  -Projection of
glyphosate supply by route, 2011-2020;
  -Projection of possible transfer
of glyphosate production in the world in the future;
  -Introduction of
supply & demand and consumption of glycine, IDAN, DEA, ethylene oxide, paraformaldehyde, yellow phosphorus, phosphorus trichloride, dimethyl phosphite, chlor-alkali, and methanol, 2006/2008-2010, 2011-2020;
  -Analysis of
upstream opportunities derived from global glyphosate development.

Global Glyphosate Demand Expected to Keep Increasing

Glyphosate has witnessed stunningly fast development since 2007, boosting the development of its upstream products including DEA, glycine, IDAN, DMP, etc. With rapidly increasing demand, glyphosate has shared more than 30% of the global herbicide sales volume. In 2010, global glyphosate sales have reached USD3.95 billion, with consumption volume of 610,000 tonnes.

It is estimated that global glyphosate demand in next ten years will keep increasing, but the growth rate will be much lower than before. The global production of glyphosate technical will grow stably correspondingly, while the three production routes will still coexist and the production by route will not change much in the coming few years.

  -What is the future development trend of glyphosate supply and demand?
  -How about the current and future competition of the three glyphosate production routes?
  -What about the supply and demand of main raw materials of glyphosate globally?
  -Is glyphosate production going to transfer from China and the U.S. to other countries?
  -Whether Chinese glyphosate production will transfer from East China to West China?
  -What opportunities will arise from the future development of glyphosate industry?

China's Glyphosate Market Still with Fierce Competition

Since some glyphosate technical manufacturers quit the glyphosate technical business, the problem of overcapacity has been slightly eased in China. However, the fact of serious overcapacity and surplus supply is still a big problem in China's glyphosate industry, and there is still intense competition in this industry.

Take Anhui Shunong Agrochemicals Co., Ltd. (Anhui Shunong) for example, Anhui Shunong used to be a well-known glyphosate technical producer in Anhui Province, but the company can not survive in the fierce competition and it was purchased by a real estate company.

According to CCM International's survey, Anhui Shunong has suspended glyphosate production for more than half a year, and most of the employees have been dismissed in Q2 2011. The company had 5,000t/a glyphosate technical facilities, and glyphosate revenue had approached USD17 million (RMB120 million) in 2008. But it didn’t positively respond to the market challenge and made strategic change when glyphosate market became worse in later 2008. Therefore, it became a victim of the long-term depressed glyphosate market in China.

The dreadful glyphosate market with under-valued price and stagnant demand has forced more and more small and medium-sized glyphosate manufacturers to give up glyphosate business. Manufacturers who keep glyphosate production lines should make changes and develop new profitable products so as to survive in the fierce market.

The above is extracted from CCM’s October Issue of Glyphsoate China Monthly Report. More news please check:
-ChemChina completes the acquisition of 60% shares of MAI, which is the first largest overseas merger in China's agrochemical industry.
-Hubei Sanonda's 15,000t/a glyphosate expansion project is ongoing slowly because the market demand hasn't increased as expected.
-Greenpeace (India) warns glyphosate risk to human and environment and suggests the halt of commercialization process of GM crops in India.
-The U.S. scientist found exposure of significant level of glyphosate in air and water.
-Chinese glyphosate manufacturers strive to seize market left by the ban of glyphosate 10% SL.
-China's glyphosate capacity decreases in 2011, but intensive competition continues.
-Complexation extraction technology for glyphosate recovery from mother liquid is briefly introduced.
-Yellow phosphorus price continues skyrocketing in October 2011, due to the tight supply caused by the electricity shortage in Yunnan Province and Guizhou Province.
-Glyphosate price keeps uptrend in October 2011, contributing a little to manufacturers' profit.
-Glyphosate export volume keeps stable in August 2011, maintaining a relatively high level in 2011.
