Construction of Blue Ridge Tunhe's biodegradable PBS program going smoothly

On Oct. 16, 2013, Xinjiang Blue Ridge Tunhe Chemical Industry Joint Stock Co., Ltd. (Blue Ridge Tunhe) announced that 46% of its biodegradable plastic program, with a production capacity of 160,000 t/a, has been completed, and that the whole program is estimated to be completed in 2014. The biodegradable plastic products include PBS and PBT, according to CCM’s Biomaterials China News issued in November.

Construction of the biodegradable plastic program began on April 16, 2013. Previously, Blue Ridge Tunhe completed pilot production of its PBS production line, with a capacity of 10,000t/a, on July 28, 2012, which may provide technological support for the subsequent PBS program.

As a traditional petrochemical processing enterprise in Western China, Blue Ridge Tunhe has only just started its PBS business. Since its PBS product has not yet passed the related environmental protection authentication, it cannot export its products, and can only produce for domestic markets.

Generally, domestic PBS industry is witnessing a large production capacity expansion in 2013. This is intensifying the competition within the PBS industry.

On one hand, new entrants or enterprises without abundant experience in the PBS industry are faced with more severe market conditions for PBS in 2013. Similar to Blue Ridge Tunhe, their PBS products have not passed the related environmental protection authentication, so their products can only be sold in the domestic market, thus intensifying the competition in the PBS industry in 2013. The domestic PBS industry has seen an overcapacity in 2013. According to related statistics, the domestic PBS capacity has reached 118,000t/a, while the domestic demand of PBS is estimated to be only 15,000-20,000 tonnes in 2013.

In 2013, three companies established new PBS plants or further expanded their production capacity. On June 6, 2013, Shandong Fuwin New Material Co., Ltd. (Shandong Fuwin) announced that it had expanded its PBS production capacity from 5,000t/a to 25,000t/a. In April 2013, the first phase of Shanxi Jinhui Group (Jinhui Group)'s PBS program, with a production capacity of 20,000t/a, entered pilot production and is currently operating strongly. In Feb. 2013, Jiangsu Yangnong Chemical Group Co., Ltd. (Yangnong Chemical) completed the construction of its PBS program, which has a production capacity of 10,000t/a.

On the other hand, leading PBS enterprises, like Kingfa Sci&Tech Co. Ltd. (Kingfa), Zhejiang Hangzhou Xinfu Pharmaceutical Co., Ltd. (Xinfu Pharmaceutical), and Anqing Hexing Chemical Co., Ltd. (Anqing Hexing), have witnessed an upturn trend in their PBS business in 2013, mainly due to the recovery of global economy. This is because the aforementioned three companies' PBS products have passed the related environmental protection authentication and are produced primarily for export.

Xinfu Pharmaceutical has taken advantage of the global economic recovery. Xinfu Pharmaceutical's revenue and gross profit margin of its PBS business increased by 12.5% (from USD2,246 million in 2012 to USD2,725 million in 2013) and 2.95% respectively in H1 2013 year-on-year, due to the improving demand in Europe.

Production and Market Situation of Sodium Gluconate in China

CCM has lately released its third edition of report in relation to Sodium Gluconate (SG), namely Production and Market of Sodium Gluconate in China, which focuses on the production situation of China’s sodium gluconate in recent three years. The report also introduces major domestic producers and major situation of downstream fields of sodium gluconate.

As one of the major SG suppliers in the world, China’s SG roduction has been witnessing a rapid development over the past ten years, which has greatly boosted China's total SG output. In recent years, several enterprises have swarmed into the domestic SG industry. The production of SG in China has concentrated in the major corn-producing areas. However, the production concentration rate of SG is not high. China's SG industry has encountered a slowdown situation and entered an integration phase.

In the report, CCM lists a series of figures to summarize SG and its related products’ capacity and output situation in China during 2006-2012, which includes: capacity distribution of corn starch in China in 2012; capacity and output of corn starch in China during 2006-2012; capacity and output of glucose monohydrate in China during 2008-2012; capacity and output of anhydrous glucose in China during 2008-2012; capacity and output of SG in China during 2004-H1 2013; capacity distribution of SG in China in 2012; output distribution of SG in China in 2012.

The report also analyzes the key factors that have been influencing the development of China’s SG industry. The report reveals that the demand from the construction industry is the dominant factor affecting SG price in China. Currently, China's SG industry still depends mostly on demand from the construction industry. The domestic SG consumption in concrete additive greatly increased in 2012, but the growth has slowed down obviously over the recent two years. Due to the slower growth of demand from the domestic construction industry, China’s SG price has continued decreasing since 2011, although the prices of major raw materials remain high.

CCM also gives a forecast on China's SG industry in the next five years. According to the report, China's SG will be more competitive in the world in the coming years. After two years' recession, the world economy showed a recovery in H1 2013. Overseas markets are surely to play an increasing important role in China's SG industry.

Production and consumption situation of China's acrylonitrile industry

China's acrylonitrile industry has enjoyed a steady expansion during 2008–2012. According to CCM’s report Market of Acrylonitrile in China, issued in February 2013, the domestic acrylonitrile capacity has exceeded 1.3 million t/a as of January 2013, while the consumption volume has been over 1.5 million tonnes, which means China still needs to import a considerable amount of acrylonitrile every year to fill the gap between supply and demand.

At present, acrylonitrile is mainly used in the production of acrylic fiber, ABS, PAM, acrylamide, NBR, etc. Among which, acrylic fiber is still the largest consumer of acrylonitrile, though its consumption demand for acrylonitrile has been dropping during 2008–2012.

As for the other two downstream fields, namely ABS and PAM, they are expected to show remarkable performance in terms of output and consumption volume. ABS is even estimated to surpass acrylic fiber to be the largest consumer of acrylonitrile in China in the future, given its increasing growth of output.

In the report, CCM focuses on the production situation and consumption pattern of China's acrylonitrile industry during 2008–2012, and forecasts its development in the next five years. In “Production situation of acrylonitrile in China during 2008–2012” part, readers can obtain the basic information of acrylonitrile production and producers, geographical distribution of production and new projects or expansion programs in relation to acrylonitrile production.

The report has also revealed the import and export situation of acrylonitrile in China during 2011–2012. The findings are concluded by CCM’s researchers basing on a large amount of data sourced from China Customs. Through these findings readers can get a lot of intelligences on China’s acrylonitrile industry, such as major exporters and importers, export destinations, export and import volume and value. With respect to the consumption situation of acrylonitrile in China, CCM will give readers a detailed elaboration of the consumption pattern of acrylonitrile in main end segments, including acrylic fiber, ABS, acrylamide, NBR, etc.

Consolidation of domestic MSG industry drawing to an end

After years of restructuring, the consolidation of China's monosodium glutamate (MSG) industry appears to be coming to an end, according to CCM’s latest report, Corn Products China News issued in July 2013.

The MSG is a fermentation product with the high energy consumption and the high pollution, which makes Chinese government strictly limit its development. To tackle these problems, in 2011, the Ministry of Industry and Information Technology of China (MIIT) issued a policy to call for the elimination of older, inefficient plant technology that uses more energy or creates more pollution than a specific industry average. 19 key industries are involved, including the MSG industry.

The MIIT data shows that China eliminated 84,000t/a of inefficient capacity in 2011 and another 143,000t/a capacity in 2012. A further 285,000t/a of capacity will be eliminated in 2013. It is believed that the consolidation of the domestic MSG industry will be completed within this year.

The result has been a massive decline in the number of MSG producers and a major shift in the center for MSG production. In the 1990s, there were more than 200 MSG companies in China. Now there are fewer than 50. Those which remain are bigger and more efficient. Over the last two years, many small producers in the Northern and Eastern areas of the country have closed down, leaving the center of production in the Northeast, Northwest and Inner Mongolia. These areas enjoy a good supply of raw materials and the energy needed to make MSG.

As a result, by 2012 nine of China's top MSG producers had the capacity exceeding 100,000t/a. These nine companies had a combined capacity of 2,980,000t/a - accounting for over 80% of China's total capacity of MSG. Three of the nine are really huge, with more than 300,000t/a capacity and accounting for roughly half of China's total capacity of MSG. They are Fufeng Group Co., Ltd.(Fufeng Group), Meihua Holdings Group Co., Ltd. (Meihua Group) and Henan Lotus Flower Gourmet Powder Co., Ltd. (Henan Lotus).

Normally, big companies could further strengthen their leading positions as the consolidation of the MSG industry undergoing. However, it will not be all smooth sailing for the more efficient giant producers.

Although many small MSG companies have been eliminated, the total domestic MSG capacity is still increasing, due to capacity expansion by big companies. Fufeng Group's MSG capacity reached 1,000,000t/a in 2012, and the company produced 970,000 tonnes of MSG - up 49% from 2011. Sales climbed 53% to 940,000 tonnes. As a result, as for some big MSG companies which didn't expand their capacities, their market shares are decreasing.

Increasing capacity has also pushed down prices. Fufeng Group, the biggest MSG company in China, adopted a low-price strategy to capture more market share. Fufeng Group's 2012 annual report shows it sold MSG for 11% less in 2012 than it did in 2011. Rising raw materials prices such as for corn also put pressure on the profit margins. According to the annual reports of Fufeng Group, Meihua Group and Henan Lotus, their profit margins of MSG business all show a down trend.

However, there is no need to be pessimistic. In general, the consolidation is benefit for the long term development for the MSG industry, and the profit margin of MSG may witness a slight rebound in the near future.

Competition in domestic xylitol industry may be more intense in the near future

Actually, the overcapacity problem for the domestic xylitol industry at present is relatively serious. According to CCM's investigation, the total capacity of xylitol in China was over 132,000t/a while its national output was only about 67,000 tonnes in 2012, with an operating rate of just over 50%.

The overcapacity in the domestic xylitol industry can be attributed to two reasons as follows.

For one thing, high downstream concentration brought less opportunities to domestic xylitol producers to fully utilize their production capacity. For example, about 81% of the national output of xylitol was consumed by domestic downstream enterprises, and the consumption volume in the domestic sugar-free chewing gum industry accounted for about 86% of the domestic total in 2012. It is obvious that the development of the domestic xylitol industry depends on that of domestic sugar-free chewing gum industry. But in China the market share of sugar-free candy is so small that it limits the development of the domestic xylitol industry. In addition, high dependence on the domestic sugar-free chewing gum industry means that it is difficult for domestic xyltiol producers to sell their products to other downstream industries in China.

For another, some xylitol producers in China rely so much on their export business. But due to the global economic crisis, the demand for China's xylitol from the overseas market declined in 2012. According to China Customs, 11,523 tonnes of China's xylitol was exported to the overseas market in 2012, decreasing by 30.83% year on year. It is believed that the weak demand for China's xylitol from overseas market in 2012 also gave rise to the decline in the operating rate of some domestic xylitol producers, worsening the overcapacity.

Nevertheless, under the overcapacity pressure in the domestic xylitol industry, some enterprises still want to enter the domestic xylitol market, which will further aggravate the overcapacity problem of domestic xylitol industry. For example, Shandong Shenghao Biotechnology Co. Ltd. (Shandong Shenghao, a wholly-owned subsidiary of Shandong Sun Paper Industry Joint Stock Co., Ltd.) took its first step into the domestic xylitol market by investing about USD16.23 million in the establishment of a factory of crystalline xylitol with a capacity of 10,000t/a and of liquid xylitol (50%) with a capacity of 4,000t/a in 2012. And in Jan. 2013, Zhumadian Tianfang Biological Engineering Co., Ltd. (Zhumadian Tianfang) invested as high as USD259.74 million to build a factory, including a production project on xylitol with a capacity of 40,000t/a.

Once the production projects above come into play, it is likely that the competition in the domestic xylitol industry will become more intense in the near future. On the contrary, it is predicted that the demand for China's xylitol both from home and abroad will not see a significant increase in the near future. The problem of the high downstream concentration is the first obstacle that the domestic xylitol industry should tackle, but it takes time to explore new downstream industries.

The intense competition of domestic xylitol industry finally has a negative effect on the producers' profit. In order to expand their market share, domestic xylitol producers would better decrease their product prices. Since 2012 the average ex-works price of crystalline xylitol in China has shown a downtrend from USD4,417/t in Jan. 2012 to USD4,233/t in May 2013. Though the cost of its raw material–corn cob–was also on a decrease, but the decrease rate was unable to keep pace with the one of xylitol's price. The average ex-works price of corn cob in China was USD77/t in 2012, but it just decreased to USD73/t in the first five months of 2013. It is obvious that by selling the same volume of xylitol domestic xylitol producers gained less net profit than before.

Therefore, more intense the competition in the domestic xylitol industry will be more difficulties in selling the xylitol and lower prices of China's xylitol there will be. In the near future, the price of China's xylitol may continue to decline, leading some producers to withdraw from the industry.

Ex-factory price of azoxystrobin technical rallies

Domestic ex-factory price of azoxystrobin technical has begun to rally since late Dec. 2012 as the demand for this fungicide increased mainly from overseas market and the stocks of some leading domestic manufacturers got low. And these main factors stimulating price rise of azoxystrobin technical still exist, indicating that the product's price may continue going up to a certain extent in the next few months of this year, according to Fungicides China News issued by CCM I in February.

Specifically, in late Dec. 2012, the ex-factory price of azoxystrobin 95% TC increased by 5.33% to about USD37,672/t (RMB237,000/t) compared with that in early Dec. 2012. It was not until 8 Jan., 2013 that a majority of domestic manufacturers raised their quoted prices, climbing to around USD38,692/t (RMB243,000/t), up 8.18% over early Dec. 2012. Moreover, this uptrend still prevails in the rest weeks of Jan. 2013. Moreover, it surged to USD39,804/t (RMB248,000/t) in early Feb. 2013.

As a matter of fact, the ex-factory price of azoxystrobin technical plummeted in China in 2010 and 2011 with the capacity expansion. Moreover, it still didn't manage to get rid of the decline trend in 2012.

In detail, the price fall range of azoxystrobin technical was bigger in the first four months of 2012. The ex-factory price of azoxystrobin 95% TC dropped to USD40,915/t (RMB258,000/t) in early April 2012, down 23.06% in comparison with that in early Jan. 2012.

From May to Sept. 2012, the price decline range of azoxystrobin 95% TC was smaller, only 6.74%. And in Q4 2012, the ex-factory price of this fungicide decreased to a relatively low level over the previous three quarters of last year. It is particularly worth noting that the ex-factory price of azoxystrobin 95% TC firstly fell below USD50,000/t (RMB318,471/t) in March 2012, hitting about USD45,904/t (RMB290,000/t), down 13.67% over early Jan. 2012. And it was not until July 2012 that its ex-factory price once again fell below USD40,000/t (RMB254,627/t) to about USD39,273/t (RMB250,000/t).

Thereafter, the ex-factory price of azoxystrobin 95% TC sank all the way and broke below the previous month's low in early Dec. 2012, less than USD36,000/t (RMB226,478/t), slipping to USD35,765/t (RMB225,000/t).

The increasing capacity resulted from more and more domestic agrochemcial companies' launch of their azoxystrobin technical production is the most important factor dragging down the ex-factory price of the product in the past three years. Furthermore, the rapid capacity expansion caused confusion in the market of azoxystobin technical, among which price disorder and malign competition were relatively serious problems.

It is well known that azoxystobin is the most popular fungicide in the world with an annual sales value of over USD1.0 billion at present, which attracted close attention of a large number of domestic agrochemical companies in the past few years. Coupled with the expired patent of the product in 2010, China's capacity of azoxystrobin technical witnessed a jump in 2011, amounting to about 1,500t/a.

Stepping into 2012, domestic companies' enthusiasm for azoxystrobin is not diminished but more inspired. This can be seen from the registration situation of azoxystrobin in China. According to the Institute for the Control of Agrochemicals, Ministry of Agriculture (ICAMA), the new registration quantity of azoxystrobin in 2012 amounted to 37 (not including repacking registration), including 22 for technical and 15 for formulations.

However, a majority of domestic manufacturers have had to reasonably plan production since H2 2012 due to the gloomy demand for azoxystrobin from overseas market and slimmer profit margin. As a result, they have tried to keep stock level low during the past few months, which can make the price right itself little by little.

Coupled with the coming of fungicide export peak season, most of azoxystrobin manufacturers in China have raised their quotations recently. Under the circumstances, the ex-factory price of azoxystrobin 95% TC witnessed a sound soar in the meantime. It is estimated that the ex-factory price of this fungicide will continue going up in the first half of 2013 with the demand push, but its rise range will not be very big due to the intense competition inside this industry.
