Round-up of China’s Glyphosate Intelligence in Q1 2013

On 27th June, 2013, CCM is going to hold a free webinar to share the latest intelligence on China’s glyphosate market in Q1 2013. Since 2011, CCM has held several webinars in relation to China’s glyphosate industry. The upcoming webinar features the following highlights

Impacts Resulted from the Cancellation of 13% Export Rebate Rate on PMIDA
After the cancellation of 13% export rebate rate on PMIDA, Chinese PMIDA manufacturers are likely to suffer higher export cost. In order to mitigate the cost pressure, they have to increase their export price. However, during the past several months, the ex-factory price and the export price of PMIDA in China have remained stable as the overseas demand for PMIDA is not quite large. Influenced by the limited overseas demand, the ex-factory price has not shown a drastic increase. The ex-factory price fluctuated between $17,000/ton and $17,700/ton in Q1 2013.

Export Dynamics
The total A.I. volume (100% glyphosate acid equivalent) of China's exported glyphosate related products in Q1 2013 increased by 74% and 39% over Q1 2011 and Q1 2012, with the total export value up by 145% and 78% over Q1 2011 and Q1 2012 respectively.

Price Dynamics
Influenced by the financial crisis in 2008, the overseas demand for glyphosate maintained sluggish for a certain period. In addition, China’s glyphosate industry encountered overcapacity resulted from blind expansion. Under this circumstance, China’s glyphosate market entered a gloomy period from 2009–2011. During these three years, the glyphosate price was generally in a rather low level. Some middle-to-small scale glyphosate manufacturers were weeded out of the market. China’s capacity of glyphosate also dropped to about 650,000 tonnes.

The demand for glyphosate has witnessed an uptrend since the second half year of 2012. The glyphosate price also began to increase in the second half year of 2012. At present, the glyphosate products price remains at a high level.

Company Dynamics
Nantong Jiangshan Agrochemical & Chemicals Co., Ltd. (Nantong Jiangshan), Zhejiang Wynca Chemical Industry Group Co., Ltd. (Zhejiang Wynca) and Anhui Huaxing Chemical Industry Co., Ltd. (Anhui Huaxing) all achieved great operating performance in 2012, thanks to the thriving market and rising profitability of glyphosate. With the enhancing profitability of glyphosate and PMIDA business in Q1 2013, the three companies all turned loss into gain in Q1 2013.

Decreasing Monochloromethane Price Compresses Glyphosate Profit

It's often said by professionals that glyphosate technical production adopting glycine route has the strongest competitiveness among the three routes (glycine, DEA, IDAN) because of its cost advantage, attributed to the recovery of monochloromethane, the by-product. However, the decreasing price of monochloromethane has compressed the profit margin of glyphosate technical adopting glycine route, according to CCM International’s April Issue of Glyphsoate China Monthly Report.

In April 2012, the ex-works price of monochloromethane has descended to USD350/t (RMB2,200/t), down 18.5% over March 2012. Compared with that in Oct. 2011, monochloromethane price in April 2012 decreased by 46.3%. In fact, monochloromethane price has witnessed a sharp decline in the past half year (from Q3 2011 to Q1 2012). The average ex-works price of monochloromethane in the first three quarters of 2011 is over USD800/t (RMB5,000/t).

"The stagnant demand in downstream industry has led to price downturn of monochloromethane in the past half year, and the sale of monochloromethane has become a problematic," a market insider said.

The main end use of monochloromethane is organic silicon. Now the low operating rate of organic silicon, resulting from the overcapacity and competition from overseas product, has led to the stagnant monochloromethane demand and then price downtrend.

The average recovery rate is about 500kg by-product monochloromethane when producing one tonne of glyphosate technical, and the recovery cost of monochloromethane is about USD80/t (RMB500/t). Thus, the gross profit from monochloromethane recovery and sales is about USD95/t (RMB600/t) from glyphosate technical production in April 2012, compared with more than USD160/t (RMB1,000/t) from that in H1 2011.

While other glyphosate technical manufacturers sell out monochloromethane, Zhejiang Wynca Chemicals Industry Group Co., Ltd. (Zhejiang Wynca) developed combined production technologies of glyphosate and organic silicon, and its monochloromethane is for private use. Coupled with the higher recovery rate, Zhejiang Wynca could gain more value in monochloromethane recovery. Some other glyphosate manufacturers, such as Sichuan Fuhua Tongda Agro-chemical Technology Co., Ltd., Hubei Xingfa Group (its subsidiary Hubei Taisheng Chemical are operating 40,000t/a glyphosate capacity) plans to develop downstream industry of monochloromethane.

Monochloromethane is mainly generated at hydrolysis process of glyphosate synthesis. The recovery process of monochloromethane includes four steps: water scrubbing, alkaline washing, drying and condensation.

Explosive Registrations of Solid Glyphosate Ammonium Salt in 2011

In 2011, China has achieved 92 registrations of glyphosate products, completed by 70 companies. Solid glyphosate ammonium salt is the most popular product registered in 2011, a sign of its growth potential in China's glyphosate market, according to CCM International’s January Issue of Glyphsoate China Monthly Report.

The 92 registrations, which accounts for 13.77% of the total active registrations as of 10 January 2012, include 7 registrations of glyphosate technical, 82 glyphosate single formulations and 3 mixed glyphosate formulations.

Among the seven glyphosate technical registrations, it is noted that Guang'an Chengxin Chemical Co., Ltd. who owns IDAN production capacity of 50,000t/a newly registered 95% glyphosate technical in 2011, indicating that the company intended to extend its IDAN manufacture to the downstream glyphosate. The company completed the construction of the new 95% glyphosate technical production line in early 2011, but it hasn't launched it up to now due to the dire market of glyphosate and IDAN.

It is also noteworthy that Zhejiang Wynca Chemical Industry Group Co., Ltd., China's top manufacturer of glyphosate technical, registered two new glyphosate technical products—77.6% glyphosate potassium salt and 70.5% glyphosate IPA salt in 2011. It's also the first time for glyphosate potassium technical and glyphosate IPA technical to be registered in China.

Among the 82 registrations of glyphosate single formulations, 43 registrations are for solid formulations, including 24 registrations for SG (soluble granule) and 19 registrations for SP (soluble powder), while the other 39 registrations are for SL (soluble liquid).

18 of the 19 newly registered glyphosate SP formulations are glyphosate ammonium salt, and the last one is glyphosate potassium salt. 23 of the 24 new glyphosate registrations are glyphosate ammonium salt, and the last one is glyphosate IPA salt of SG form, registered by Zhejiang Wynca Chemical Industry Group Co., Ltd. That's to say, 50% (41 of the 82 registrations) of glyphosate single formulations registered in 2011 is solid form of glyphosate ammonium.

The total number of solid glyphosate ammonium formulations newly registered in 2011 accounts for 35.04% of total active registrations of solid single glyphosate products as of Dec. 31, 2011.

The explosive registration of solid glyphosate ammonium in 2011 indicates market expectation of future growth in solid formulations in China's glyphosate market. Now glyphosate formulations with SL form dominate the overwhelming market and the market competition is relatively stiff. But comparatively, glyphosate solid formulations are not very popular at present and the competition is relative loose. So, the market players aim to seize more market share in the solid glyphosate formulation market, which is expected to be promoted in the future.

Investors Question Huaxing Chemical for its Weak Performance

On Nov. 23, 2011, Anhui Huaxing Chemical Industry Co., Ltd. (Huaxing Chemical) announced that it would close one of its subsidiary. The constantly weak performance of Huaxing Chemical makes investors concern about its unadvisable and mutable strategies, and the company was criticized and blamed by investors. CCM’s December Issue of Herbicides China News shares with you the detailed story.

Huaxing Chemical lost USD20.1 million (RMB127.7 million) in net profit in the whole year of 2010, and witnessed continuously net profit loss of USD4.3 million (RMB27.6 million) in the first three quarters of 2011. As a result, Huaxing Chemical's stock price in the exchange market always appears sluggish and unstable after 2008.

Although current pesticide market is unfavorable, the investors doubt that the poor operation and management of Huaxing Chemical are the major reason why the company performed so badly. Take this subsidiary liquidation for example, Huaxing Chemical claimed that the liquidation of its subsidiary Anhui Huaxing Chemical Industry Chongqing Co., Ltd. (Huaxing Chongqing) is due to the current unsuitable situation. But some rumors indicated that the liquidation of Huaxing Chongqing is mainly attributed to the company's unsuccessful investment resulted from the unadvisable decision.

Specifically speaking, Huaxing Chemical's investment of 20,000t/a glyphosate technical transformation initiated in 2009 with accumulative amount of USD4.3 million (RMB27.7 million) is being delayed in the long term. The construction still stays at the installation stage of main equipments due to the weak glyphosate market. These vain investments even withdraw Huaxing Chemical's performance instead of enhancing company competitiveness. Moreover, Huaxing Chemical might probably encounter the problem of deficit in two consecutive years (2010–2011).

What’s worse, the recent suspended reorganization of Huaxing Chemical puts further stresses on investors. On Nov. 7, 2011, Huaxing Chemical suspended stock trade for laying out company reorganization. The company resumed stock trade on Nov. 11, 2011, and declared not to map out the reorganization in the future three months for it isn't at the proper time.

Coupled with industrial integration in Chinese pesticide, Huaxing Chemical will choose reorganization to boost its performance in an estimate. But it can't be predicted who will be the next cooperator of Huaxing Chemical. It can be sure that investors expect Huaxing Chemical to adjust its management and strategy on the right track. However, in fact, Huaxing Chemical's management team witnessed changes of personnel twice in the past eleven months of 2011.

Headline News of Herbicides China News 1112:
-Jiangsu Lanfeng is favored by investors in Chinese stock market.
-Huaxing Chemical is oppugned by investors due to the weak performance.
-Shenyang Sciencreat doesn't run any capacity constructions about haloxyfop-R-methyl and diflufenican.
-Jiangsu Huifeng removes capital in two IPO projects for stronger overseas business.

-Fengshan Group runs trial production of 3,000t/a trifluralin technical which belongs to the first stage of the 5,000t/a trifluralin technical transformation.
-Tianrong group's whole relocation will go into the stage of Jiangsu Ruihe and Jiangsu Zhongyi's relocation in a short term.
-Hubei Huida runs plant relocation to meet governmental regulation for safe production.
-Five main herbicides such as glyphosate, paraquat, acetochlor, atrazine and quizalofop-P-ethyl all meet price hike at a slow pace in 2011.
-Glyphosate price keeps relatively stable in 2011.

Huaxing Chemical Oppugned

Triggered by an announcement about subsidiary liquidation issued on Nov. 23, 2011, Anhui Huaxing Chemical Industry Co., Ltd. (Huaxing Chemical) encountered a trouble of being blamed and questioned by investors. In detail, Huaxing Chemical is criticized for acting with unadvisable and mutable strategies. Although the criticism seems subjective to some extent, it's observed that Huaxing Chemical has witnessed constantly weak performance indeed these years, according to CCM’s DecemberIssue of Herbicides China News.

Clouded by the shrinkage of company performance in 2009, Huaxing Chemical lost USD20.1 million (RMB127.7 million) in net profit in the whole year of 2010, and witnessed continuously net profit loss of USD4.3 million (RMB27.6 million) in the first three quarters of 2011. As a result, Huaxing Chemical's stock price in the exchange market always appears sluggish and unstable after 2008, and the global stock market is also impacted by some severe social events such as the European Debt Crisis.

As to the responsibility behind such a weak performance, the investors' fire burns toward Huaxing Chemical's operation and management rather than current unfavorable pesticide market. Take this subsidiary liquidation for example, Huaxing Chemical put its subsidiary, Anhui Huaxing Chemical Industry Chongqing Co., Ltd. (Huaxing Chongqing), into liquidation because of current unsuitable situation, according to Huaxing Chemical's explanation in the announcement. But some rumors indicated that the liquidation of Huaxing Chongqing, who runs a 34,000t/a IDAN project (initiated in 2009) valuated at USD5.6 million (RMB35.5 million), is mainly attributed to the company's unsuccessful investment resulted from the unadvisable decision.

As Huaxing Chemical indicated, owing to the depressed glyphosate market, the whole glyphosate production chain is trapped in dilemma at present. Intense competition and overcapacity lead to many suspensions and stops of the relative productions such as IDAN in China.

In Huaxing Chemical's investments, a 20,000t/a glyphosate technical transformation initiated in 2009 with accumulative investment of USD4.3 million (RMB27.7 million) is being delayed in the long term. In detail, the construction still stays at the installation stage of main equipments due to the weak glyphosate market.

These vain investments even withdraw Huaxing Chemical's performance instead of enhancing company competitiveness. Huaxing Chemical will probably encounter the problem of deficit in two consecutive years (2010–2011), implying that the company will meet special treatment in stock market if the loss happens again in 2011.

Although Huaxing Chemical acquired local government's subsidy of USD11.8 million (RMB75 million) in total last month, the reduction of deficit risk can't alleviate investors' worries. What's more, recent suspended reorganization of Huaxing Chemical tenses the investors' nerve further.

According to Huaxing Chemical's bulletin issued on Nov. 11, 2011, Huaxing Chemical resumed stock trade on that day, and declared not to map out the reorganization in the future three months for it isn't at the proper time. On Nov. 7, the company suspended stock trade for laying out company reorganization.

Is It Possible to Transfer China’s Glyphosate Technical Capacity

Glyphosate is one of the most commonly used herbicides in the market today. As the largest production base of glyphosate, China experienced irrational expansion in 2007 and 2008, but the whole glyphosate industry has been undergoing depressed glyphosate market since late 2008.

Some people remark whether there is an industrial transfer globally, which could help release China's overcapacity and improvement of world's glyphosate price. CCM International has done research on the possibility of glyphosate technical's capacity transfer.

All findings are recorded in the report of Global Commercial Opportunities Derived from Glyphosate Industry. Some results are:
1) It is impossible (or little possibility) to launch new glyphosate technical production line by using original starting material DEA (or glycine, IDAN) in overseas countries in the future 5~10 years. In other words, it's inadvisable to invest such glyphosate technical production lines.
2) It is possible to launch glyphosate production line by using PMIDA as the starting raw material in the future 5~10 years, but the possibility is relatively low.
3) There is low possibility of China's industrial transfer from Southeast China to Western China.

This report also focuses on the following aspects:
  -Analysis of
supply and demand of glyphosate technical, 2006-2020;
  -Introduction and
comparison of different production routes of glyphosate;
  -Projection of
glyphosate supply by route, 2011-2020;
  -Projection of possible transfer
of glyphosate production in the world in the future;
  -Introduction of
supply & demand and consumption of glycine, IDAN, DEA, ethylene oxide, paraformaldehyde, yellow phosphorus, phosphorus trichloride, dimethyl phosphite, chlor-alkali, and methanol, 2006/2008-2010, 2011-2020;
  -Analysis of
upstream opportunities derived from global glyphosate development.

Global Glyphosate Demand Expected to Keep Increasing

Glyphosate has witnessed stunningly fast development since 2007, boosting the development of its upstream products including DEA, glycine, IDAN, DMP, etc. With rapidly increasing demand, glyphosate has shared more than 30% of the global herbicide sales volume. In 2010, global glyphosate sales have reached USD3.95 billion, with consumption volume of 610,000 tonnes.

It is estimated that global glyphosate demand in next ten years will keep increasing, but the growth rate will be much lower than before. The global production of glyphosate technical will grow stably correspondingly, while the three production routes will still coexist and the production by route will not change much in the coming few years.

  -What is the future development trend of glyphosate supply and demand?
  -How about the current and future competition of the three glyphosate production routes?
  -What about the supply and demand of main raw materials of glyphosate globally?
  -Is glyphosate production going to transfer from China and the U.S. to other countries?
  -Whether Chinese glyphosate production will transfer from East China to West China?
  -What opportunities will arise from the future development of glyphosate industry?

Chinese Glyphosate Upstream Industry Webinar Was Successfully Held

“This webinar has been the most successful one so far. Nearly 50 people have registered, the biggest number of registration ever since. The topic of glyphosate upstream industry aroused great interest among those who have registered. But we feel sorry about the entry barrier to some of the participants. The number of the participants was far more than the limited quota assigned for the webinar. We had worked hard on this issue to solve this problem.” Rico Chen, the speaker of the webinar stated.

 “Most attendees were from renowned companies, such as Syngenta, Monsanto, Rhodia and Taminco, etc.” Rico said, “More than 70% of the attendees think the webinar was quite valuable and some information was impressive and useful. They have benefited a lot from this webinar.”

During this webinar, CCM reviewed the production, consumption, import and export situation of glyphosate upstream industries (DAE, Glycine, Paraformaldehyde, IDAN and Phosphorus Chemicals) in China. The development trend of the products in the past few years was shown by the displaying charts, which helps to better understand the demand and price dynamic in Chinese market. What’s more, Rico analyzed that the reasons resulted in recession of glyphosate lie in overcapacity, export barrier, rising cost and climate. Combined with the industrial chain, CCM made forecast on the future trend and opportunities of the upstream products and the producers. On the whole, the glyphosate will be in downturn for the time being, but the upstream industries are still able to see the opportunities.

“The information prepared for the webinar is mainly referred to CCM’s existing report Global Commercial Opportunities Derived from Glyphosate Industry and other researches related to glyphosate, such as Glyphosate China Monthly Report.” Rico explained.

CCM will keep hold such kind of live webinars frequently. We are looking forward to your attendances in CCM’s next webinar!
