Domestic Enzymes Preparations Industry to Have Fast Development under Chinese Government's Policy Support

The domestic enzymes preparations industry will have a good opportunity for development under the Chinese government's policy support, according to CCM International’s January Issue of Industrial Biotechnology China News.

Mr. Du, the Secretary-General of the China Biotech Fermentation Industry Association, explains the current situation and the development trend of enzymes industry related to the Chinese government's policy in details at the meeting of China Biotech Fermentation Industry Association (CBFIA), held on 8-9 December, 2011, an important meeting for Chinese biotech fermentation and relevant industry.

Mr. Du emphasizes that during the period of the Twelfth Five-Year Development Plan, the main direction is to accelerate the new series of enzymes industrial production and obtain their intellectual property rights in food, drug and environmental protection industry. Recently, there will be mainly 4 enzymes' areas for the national key new products of 2012 declaration plan from the Chinese government support:

 1. New kinds of food grade enzyme preparations in food processing industry
 2. New kinds of industrial enzymes preparations
 3. Toolenzymes
 4. Immobilization and regeneration of technical equipment of enzyme and coenzyme

Mr. Du claims that biocatalysis engineering will play a key role in the Twelfth Five-Year Development Plan of Biotechnology. During the period of the Twelfth Five-Year Development Plan, the Chinese government will not only build two main enzymes preparations production bases in Hunan Province and Shandong Province, but also plan to carry out the development of enzyme technology, such as biotransformation technology, highly expressed enzymes technology, enzymes' immobilization, coenzyme regeneration, multi-enzyme coupling, enzyme and chemical coupling, coupling enzymes and fermentation. More importantly, the key technologies of asymmetric and enantioselective, non-aqueous-phase catalytic reaction process optimization and bio-magnification technology will be developed fast. It will develop the enzymes bio-catalysis engineering technology which will have its own intellectual property right and the high quality with low cost industrial production, so as to improve the development and application of industrial enzymes in China.
In addition to the development of industrial enzymes, the utilization of the food by-product will be strongly advocated, according to Mr. Du. Take the protein-enriched beer residue as an typical example, Mr. Du says that the rest of the yeast from the beer residue can be made into the flavor agent—dextran through the effect of zymohydrolysis.

Last but not least, the Chinese government will establish a number of manufacturing sub-annual National Laboratory and National Engineering Research Center of the biological catalysts to encourage and support the establishment of foreign institutions in China, in order to enhance the bio-manufacturing technology innovation. Also, the Chinese government will support the establishment of enzymes, bio-clean production and recycling of industrial economies and other industrial innovation strategic alliances.

Mr. Du is optimistic about the future of the enzymes industrial development based on the current development of domestic enzymes industry. He cites the domestic enzymes output data from CBFIA, and the output of domestic enzyme industry has increased to 778,000 tonnes in 2010 from 480,000 tonnes in 2005. (FIGURE) Also, according to the latest statistics from CBFIA, the output of domestic enzyme industry has increased to 600,000 tonnes from January to August 2011, compared with 530,000 tonnes at the same period last year, whose grown rate has reached 13%.

Meanwhile, the Chinese government draws up revised plan of industry-standard system in order to regulate the increasing enzymes production. According to the latest 2011 third revised plan of industry-standard system from the Ministry of Industry and Information Technology of the People's Republic of China (MIIT), the industrial standard of catalase preparation and cutinase preparation are revised (QB/T 2444-2011, QB/T 2445-2011).
