Fungicide in Orange Juice Affects Export of China’s Carbendazim

The American media reports recently that Coca-Cola found there was unapproved fungicide in the Brazilian orange juice and the company has informed the U.S. Food and Drug Administration (FDA) about this. FDA discovered that some Brazilian growers had sprayed their trees with a fungicide, namely carbendazim, which was not registered for use in the U.S.

It is reported that carbendazim has been used in Brazil for more than 20 years. Although the dose of carbendazim in Brazil is over 100 times more than the tested level of that in America, carbendazim is not considered to be harmful in Brazil.

Jianhua Ju, Researcher of CCM International explains that carbendazim is a broad-spectrum fungicide. It is widely used in disease prevention and pest control of fruit trees, vegetables, flowers and field crops. The U.S. government has forbidden the registration of carbendazim for the sake of food safety. Since carbendazim is mainly produced in China, the issue would directly or indirectly decline the export of carbendazim in China. Related governmental departments should encourage use safety and strengthen regulation. In addition, some experts also point out that pesticide residues in food processing is usual, because there will be chemical residues during thermal decomposition or filtration of pesticide. It is no need to be panic.
