Top 100 pesticide companies' revenue rising fast

According to CCM’s monthly issue, China Crop Protection Monthly Report 1311, The CCPIA annual list of top 100 pesticide companies was first published in 2011, making this the third year the ranking has been in place. The three Top 100 Lists from 2011 to 2013 show the significant improvement in the performance of the ranked companies as a whole, and the growth of these large companies has led the development of China's pesticide industry over these years.

Total pesticide revenue of the top 100 companies has clearly increased in the period. With a Compound Average Growth Rate (CAGR) of 26.38% (all calculations have been based on values in RMB) from 2010 to 2012, the total pesticide revenues of the top 100 pesticide companies reached USD12.9 billion (RMB79.1 billion) in 2012. The CAGR of the top 100 pesticide companies is higher than that of the total pesticide sales revenue of China's pesticide industry in 2012.

The numbers also show that the top 10 and top 30 in the list enjoyed even more remarkable growth rates. The total pesticide revenue CAGR of the top 10 and the top 30 are 31.37% and 29.11% respectively, a strong sign of the pesticide industry's development.

With rapid growth, the top 100 pesticide companies accounted for 33.49% of the total sales revenue of the industry in 2012, up by 2.23 percentage points compared with 2010. In the meanwhile, the top 10 and the top 30 companies accounted for 9.52% and 19.53%, respectively, of China's total pesticide sales revenue in 2012.

The Top 100 List also indicates that competition among pesticide companies is intensifying. Companies must strive for improvement if they want to keep their positions in the Top 100 List, since the threshold is becoming higher. The 100th company in the 2011 list had a pesticide revenue of USD27.7 million (RMB170 million) in the previous year (2010). Meanwhile, the last place in the 2013 Top 100 earned USD42.4 million (RMB260 million) the previous year.

Competition among the top companies in the list is even fiercer. It is estimated that as many as 24 pesticide companies brought in over USD163.13 million (RMB1.0 billion) in pesticide revenue in 2012, 8 more than the number in 2011 and double of the number in 2010 (10 companies).

Nantong Jiangshan Agrochemical & Chemical Co., Ltd., for instance, had pesticide revenues of USD166.1 million (RMB1,018 million) in 2010, placing it at number 10 in the 2011 list. However, if it had maintained the same revenue, the company would only have ranked 24th in the 2013 list.

93 new registrations of insecticide technical were approved in China in 2012

According to statistics from the Institute for the Control of Agrochemicals, Ministry of Agriculture (ICAMA), there were 93 new registrations (not including the updating of the old registrations) of insecticide technical approved in China in 2012. These 93 new registrations covered 58 kinds of insecticide technical, with a total of 67 registrants from abroad and within China. Among these 58 kinds of insecticide technical, there were 51 agriculture insecticides and seven hygienic insecticides according to CCM January by Issue of Insecticides China News

Figures indicate that three neonicotinoid insecticides, namely thiamethoxam, imidacloprid and acetamiprid, were the top registrations by quantity in 2012. Of these, thiamethoxam technical was the most frequently registered, with six new registrations in 2012. Before 2012, there was one registration of thiamethoxam technical acquired by Syngenta who is the owner of the patent for thiamethoxam. With the patent expiration approaching in July 2013, thiamethoxam will continue to be registered by more and more companies in the future. It is predicted that large-scale production of thiamethoxam will be put into operation, thus the cost may decrease and the price decline. Meanwhile, soaring registrations will bring about other problems such as overcapacity and intense competition.

Except thiamethoxam, imidacloprid and acetamiprid, the registration quantity of other insecticide technicals was less than four. It is worth noticing that some insecticides were firstly registered in 2012. Most of them are new products with strong competitiveness, including cyflumetofen, cyantraniliprole, spinetoram, etoxazole, flufiprole, fufenozide, ivermectin, etc. Some of them should replace older insecticides which suffer from worsening insect resistance.

As for registrants, there are nine companies, namely, Jiangsu Changlong Chemicals Co., Ltd., Anhui Changtai Chemical Co., Ltd., Jiangsu Subin Agrochemical Co., Ltd., Mesa Tech Co., Ltd., Shangyu Nutrichem Co., Ltd., Shijiazhuang Richem Co., Ltd., Sinochem Ningbo (Lianyungang) Chemicals Co., Ltd., Zhejiang Heben Pesticide & Chemicals Co., Ltd. and Sumitomo Chemical Co., Ltd., with more than two new registrations of insecticide technical.

Will Export Market of China’s Imidacloprid Continue Expanding?

With fast development in recent years, China's pesticide industry becomes more and more important in the global pesticide industry chain. Imidacloprid, as one of the major insecticides in China, also takes an important role in the global market. China is not only a imidacloprid producer guaranteeing its own agricultural production, but also an important imidacloprid exporter in the world.

As a major supplier of imidacloprid, China has many advantages in the production of imidacloprid, including efficient production technology, sufficient raw material supply, low production cost, etc. About 50% of imidacloprid technical producers are located in Jiangsu Province. With the increasingly intense competition in the imidacloprid industry, will China's production of imidacloprid further concentrate in the future? What kind of enterprises will hold dominant positions in China's imidacloprid production?

China is a major imidacloprid export country, and over half of its imidacloprid output is exported to counties all over the world. The export value of imidacloprid in China has witnessed an increase of over 50% in 2011 compared with that in 2010. What are the reasons of this huge increase? Where are the imidacloprid products export to? Will the export market of imidacloprid in China continue enlarging in the future years? What is the trend of imidacloprid price in the future?

In China, imidacloprid is mainly used in the control of rice plant hoppers and aphids. It is mainly applied on rice, wheat, cotton, vegetables, etc. Domestic market of imidacloprid has seen a slow growth in recent years, and the market structure has some changes. What is the consumption structure on different crops and in different regions now? What will be the new growth point of imidacloprid in domestic market in the future?

The 3rd edition report of Production and Market of Imidacloprid in China, based on
CCM International’s five-year research experiences in Chinese imidacloprid industry and its upstream sectors, dives deep into China’s imidacloprid industry to figure out the industry’s key characteristics, latest dynamics and future trends, in terms of production, R&D, pricing, export situation, consumption/demand, etc., and it can answer the above-mentioned questions and provide you a comprehensive insight of the imidacloprid industry in China.

Rice Diseases and Insect Pests to Seriously Hit Zhejiang in 2012

According to Zhejiang Plant Protection Station (ZPPS), in 2012 diseases and insect pests of major crops, especially rice, will occur more seriously in Zhejiang Province (an eastern coastal province of China) over last year, based on factors mainly including the cardinal number of overwintering diseases and insect pests, crop distribution, weather trend, etc., according to CCM International’s May issue of Insecticides China News.

It is expected that the occurrence of diseases and insect pests of wheat and rape will moderately occur, while that of rice will be serious. Among rice pests, the damage of migratory pests such as rice brown plant hopper and rice leaf folder will be as serious as that in 2011, and that of first generation of chilo suppressalis and rice sheath blight will be moderate.

The total stricken area of rice diseases and insect pests will accumulatively reach around 8.00 million ha. in Zhejiang in 2012 with 0.67 million ha. increase compared with 7.33 million ha. in 2011. And rice plant hopper is the most serious insect pest, followed by chilo suppressalis and rice leaf folder.

White-backed plant hopper and brown plant hopper will moderately to seriously occur, with occurrence area of about 1.33 million ha. and 1.67 million ha. respectively. And the areas in which rice leaf folder's occurrence will be moderate to serious will hit about 2 million ha. The occurrence of rice stem borer, especially chilo suppressalis, varies in different regions, covering stricken area of 0.67 million ha. In the north of Zhejiang, the population of sesamia inferens will very likely rise.

Recommended insecticides to control brown rice plant hopper mainly include pymetrozine, buprofezin, chlorpyrifos, DDVP and isoprocarb; those for white backed planthopper include imidacloprid, pymetrozine, buprofezin, nitenpyram and thiamethoxam; and those for control of rice leaf roller mainly include abamectin, emamectin benzoate, chloantraniliprole, indoxacarb, phenthoate and profenofos.

In addition, rice sheath blight will moderately to seriously hit paddy fields in Zhejiang, with area of 0.87 million ha. Rice false smut and rice virus diseases such as rice stripe diseases and rice black streaked dwarf will hit the fields at a moderate way.

The total stricken area of wheat diseases and insect pests will accumulatively hit about 0.16 million ha. in Zhejiang Province in 2012, more serious over last year. Among the pests, key species to strike wheat mainly including wheat aphid and wheat plant hopper will bring moderate or light damage to the main planting regions of wheat in Zhejiang this year. And gibberellin's damage will be moderate.

The total stricken area of rape diseases and insect pests is predicted to accumulatively hit 0.27 million ha. in Zhejiang this year. In particular, rape stem rot will moderately to seriously strike the main planting regions of rape in Zhejiang this year. Rape sclerotium disease is one of the most serious rape diseases.

Overview of China's Insecticide Industry in 2011--Challenges

The year of 2011 is a hard time for insecticide players in China. The occurrence of insect pests was not so serious as expected; companies faced a year of weak insecticide demand again. Besides, they had to meet severe challenges such as overcapacity and intense competition from foreign products. As insecticide is the most important segment of domestic crop protection market, its bad performance had led most of domestic formulation players to a tough year in 2011, according to CCM International’s January issue of Insecticides China News.

China's insecticide output from Jan. to Nov. 2011 totaled 629,500 tonnes, up 15% over the same period last year. Many insecticides, such as chlorpyrifos, abamectin, imidacloprid and triazophos, have witnessed marked output increase, according to China Crop Protection Industry Association. However, the demand in domestic market was about 124,900 tonnes in 2011, down about 1.4% year on year mainly attributed to the reduced demand for rice insecticides.

In the whole year of 2011, the occurrence of insect pests in China was less frequent over 2010, according to National Agricultural Technology Extension and Service Center. In the first half of 2011, most insecticides suffered decline in sales volume over last year; some even tumbled. The major reason for a significant decline lies in the drought early this year, which directly postponed the start of the peak sales season till June. As investigated, the demand for some largely consumed insecticides like abamectin and chlorpyrifos remained weak in H1 2011, especially from Jan. to May. Entering June, insecticide market began to recover as the rainfall brought about severe occurrence of insect pests on rice, cotton and corn, which lasted till August.

As of Sept. 2011, the occurrence of rice plant hopper in total planting areas of late rice except Hunan Province was less frequent over last year. And the occurrence of rice stem borer in most planting areas is similar to that in 2010. Therefore, domestic demand for insecticides wasn't so high as expected in the whole year.

Besides, overseas companies introduced a lot of products to Chinese market, which intensified the competition in domestic insecticide industry. Some products were widely applied by farmers, such as DuPont's Kangkuan (20% chlorantraniliprole SC), Bayer CropScience's Daoteng (10% flubendiamide • abamectin SC) and Syngenta's Virtako (40% chlorantraniliprole • thiamethoxam WG). As reported, imported insecticides enjoyed a good performance in high-end rice insecticide market, while Chinese products witnessed a year-on-year (YoY) decline of about 20% in sales volume.

Despite the sluggish insecticide market in 2011, the market prices of most insecticides have seen a YoY growth of around 15% due to the rise in both raw material cost and export volume and value. Take 95% chlorpyrifos technical and 95% imidacloprid technical for example, their ex-factory prices increased from USD5,231/t and USD17,297/t in Jan. 2011 to USD6,580/t and USD20,473/t in Dec. 2011, with a YoY growth of 21% and 16% respectively. On the contrary, some insecticides' market prices declined due to slack market demand and overcapacity. For example, the ex-factory price of 95% abamectin technical has kept decreasing since March 2011, dropping from USD80,621/t in March 2011 to USD78,886/t in Dec. 2011. It even reached USD78,629/t in Oct. 2011, the lowest since 2008.

In 2011, the Chinese government continued to eliminate highly toxic pesticides. According to the No.1586 Announcement released by the Ministry of Agriculture in 2011, the registration and production license of ten highly toxic pesticides shall be revoked from 31 Oct., 2011, while their sales and application shall be banned from 31 Oct., 2013. Among these ten pesticides, six are insecticides: phosfolanmethyl, fonofos, magnesium phosphide, coumaphos, sulfotep and terbufos. Besides these six insecticides, another 12 insecticides are on their way to be banned in the future.

As most highly toxic pesticides to be banned are insecticides, the implementation of the No.1586 Announcement should have some impact on insecticide industry. With the withdrawal of these 18 highly toxic insecticides, especially some largely consumed ones like omethoate, phorate and methomyl, the insecticide market will experience some changes, as the market share left should be filled by other insecticides. Recommended substitutes like bio-insecticides and lowly toxic insecticides will fight for the market share.

Market of Rice Insecticides to Keep On Increasing

As one of key rice planting countries, China’s rice planting area exceeds 29.63 million hectares, accounting for about 18.9% of the total rice planting area in the world and 18.68% of China's total crop planting area. The domestic consumption of rice insecticides on rice accounts for about 10% of the total pesticide consumption in China.

In recent years, many MNCs have attached great importance to the promotion of rice insecticides in China, which intensified the market competition of rice insecticides in China. It is certain that the market size of rice insecticides will keep on increasing and the market competition will become fiercer in the following years, signifying more opportunities and challenges in the rice insecticides market in China.

Currently, the share of chlorpyrifos is the largest by volume and the share of abamectin is the largest by value in China’s rice insecticide market.

The rice insecticide market will mainly follow the trend of low toxicity, practical effectiveness and environmental friendliness, influenced by the occurrence and resistance of rice insects, as well as the development of crops.

It is predicted that the market share of pymetrozine and imidacloprid will enlarge, and acephate will lose some market share, and the share of other major rice insecticides will be relatively stable.

More details about the future development of China’s rice insecticides market will be presented in CCM International’s new report of Survey of Rice Insecticides in China. The report gives you a comprehensive understanding of China’s rice insecticides market from aspects of supply, demand, major products, MNCs’ dynamic, future development, etc. If you need more information about this report, please feel free to contact us at econtact@cnchemicals.com.

Domestic Pesticide Industry Continues Downturn

According to the data from National Bureau of Statistics, China's pesticide output reached 1.92 million tonnes in Q1-Q3 2011, up 15.7% compared with that at the same period last year. Pesticide output in the whole year of 2011 is predicted to reach about 2.5 million tonnes and domestic demand may reach 308,000 tonnes, based on CCM’s latest issue of Crop Protection China News.

Although the amount of pesticide output and sales volume in 2011 is predicted to increase to a certain extent, domestic pesticide industry still seems to be trapped in downturn.

According to the 2011 Q3 financial reports of all the listed pesticide companies in China, including 20 listed companies that mainly engaged in pesticide production and sales, total revenue of these companies reached USD4.07 billion in Q1-Q3 2011, up 24.07% compared with that at the same period last year. However, the net profit in this period on the other side witnessed slide, reaching USD100.66 million, down 32.28% over Q1-Q3 2010.

Overcapacity is still considered to be the main reason for the downturn of domestic pesticide industry. At the beginning of 2011, although insiders have ever predicted that domestic pesticide industry may recover in 2011 due to the prediction of price increase of raw materials, the intense competition and lagging price increase of pesticides have made the industry remain in downturn.

Domestic pesticide output gradually has surged in recent years, but the domestic demand accounts for merely 1/8 of the total output. As an export-oriented country in pesticide industry, China has a large amount of pesticides exported to oversea market every year. In Q1-Q3 2011, China has accumulatively exported 594,200 tonnes of pesticides, consisting of 158,100 tonnes of insecticides, 377,200 tonnes of fungicides and 58,900 tonnes of herbicides.

Adding up the pesticide amount consumed by domestic market and the export volume, a large amount of pesticides remain in dull sale condition. Aiming to maximize interests and further seize the market share, most of domestic pesticide companies still have the competitive ability to expand the capacity of their products. So far, some pesticides, such as glyphosate, imidacloprid, abamectin and acetochlor, have suffered from serious overcapacity in China.

Glyphosate, an effective herbicide but with tragic destiny in China, is always mentioned when talking about pesticide overcapacity in China. Domestic glyphosate capacity reaches over 720,000t/a in 2011, but the output is predicted to be 300,000 tonnes to 350,000 tonnes. With dim consumption capability in oversea market and low consumption amount in domestic market, downturn of domestic glyphosate industry continues in 2011. Performance of some main glyphosate manufacturers in China mirrored the downturn in Q1-Q3 2011, such as Nantong Jiangshan Agrochemical & Chemicals Co., Ltd. and Anhui Huaxing Chemical Industry Co., Ltd.

Acetochlor, a herbicide used in large dry farmland, also faces overcapacity this year. Its total capacity reaches 140,000t/a in 2011, but only 10,000 tonnes and 20,000 tonnes are consumed in domestic market and oversea market respectively.

Business of products like imidacloprid and abamectin are even more difficult in China in 2011. Serious product homogenization, overcapacity and impact from foreign products such as chlorantraniliprole have made enterprises face even larger pressure.

At present, pesticide export is still considered to be an efficient way to ease the overcapacity pressure in China. However, fundamental problems can't be solved by only depending on pesticide export. As more and more high-level pesticides with low toxicity and residue, and improved pesticide effect developed by foreign pesticide giants, the pesticide demand in oversea market will indirectly decrease. Cracking down and standardizing the chaotic pesticide industry, leading to orderly production, more investment in new pesticide R&D, etc. are considered to be good ways to ease the downturn in domestic pesticide industry. Unfortunately, it is more easier said than done, and serious overcapacity in China may still continue in the next few years.
