China produced about 925 thousand tonnes of TiO2 in H1 2013, representing a YoY fall of 1.28%

According to CCM's investigation, China produced a total of approximately 925 thousand tonnes of TiO2 in H1 2013, a YoY fall of 1.28% compared with 937 thousand tonnes in H1 2012. In H1 2013, the domestic TiO2 price declined by more than 12%, due to the weak export conditions and the sluggish downstream demand. This caused some producers to reduce or halt production.

At the end of June 2013, TiO2 producers were still burdened by high inventory levels. However, the sluggish market condition has provided giant TiO2 producers opportunities to expand their market share through low price strategies. This has forced some small producers out of the market, which further accelerates the integration within the industry.

At the same time, market share of the top five domestic TiO2 producers was 37.57% in H1 2013, a 6.22% increase from H1 2012. This is primarily due to the launching of Sichuan Lomon's new project and the integration of CNNC Titanium, which have correspondingly raised their TiO2 capacities.

The top TiO2 producers have consolidated their places in the industry by increasing their output during H1 2013. Sichuan Lomon ranked first with an output of more than 100 thousand tonnes in H1 2013, compared with the output of 86 thousand tonnes in H1 2012. Sichuan Lomon acquired 300,000t/a of new TiO2 production capacity after its Xiangyang project went into operation in the beginning of 2013. The Xiangyang project largely increased Sichuan Lomon's TiO2 output in H1 2013. Shandong Dongjia ranked second with an output of approximately 75 thousand tonnes, a YoY increase of about 10%. CNNC Titanium leapfrogged Henan Billions and ranked third, with an output of 63 thousand tonnes after integrating the assets of CNNC Hua Yuan Titanium Dioxide Co., Ltd. and Anhui Jinxing Titanium Co., Ltd. Henan Billions ranked fourth with a TiO2 output of 57.8 thousand tonnes, a YoY fall of 3.83%. Pangang Group was fifth, having produced 41.7 thousand tonnes in H1 2013.

Meanwhile, under the weak market conditions in H1 2013, seven small TiO2 producers have halted their facilities. These seven small producers have a combined total TiO2 capacity of approximately 126 thousand tonnes.

New policies affect the market share of refrigerants

According to CCM’s China Fluoride Materials Monthly Report issued in June, the new policy in the air-conditioning industry may increase the market share of R410a. On June 1, 2013, the Chinese 85% after 5 years. For R410a producers, it is a good chance to generate more profit in the intense domestic market. The new air conditioner policy will promote the production of inverter air-conditioners, which will increase the market demand for R410a.

For R22 producers, however, there may be difficult times because of the new air-conditioner policy. In 2013, China's Ministry of Environmental Protection (MEP) will impose quota limits on refrigerant production in accordance with the Kyoto Protocol. Although the relevant documents have not been issued, it's estimated that the production quota of R22 is only about 300,000 tonnes in 2013. But, the current capacity for R22 in China is about 720,000t/a. Worse still, the new air-conditioner policy will reduce the market demand for R22. It is worth noting that the Chinese government has cancelled the energy saving subsidy policy since June 1, 2013. Consumers cannot obtain subsidy when they buy an energy-saving product, which means the consumers need to spend more than USD24.23 to USD40.39 to buy an air-conditioner.

According to the MEP, there is no new policy to encourage consumption. The cancellation of the subsidy policy may reduce the domestic consumption of air-conditioners, which will have a bad effect on air conditioner enterprises. Furthermore, it will reduce the market demand for refrigerants. Government issued a new standard for inverter air-conditioners, which will be formally implemented in Oct. 2013. The new standard will divide the energy level of the inverter air-conditioners into 3 from the original 5. According to the new standard, the inefficient inverter air-conditioners with an energy level of 4 and 5 will no longer be listed in sales from Oct. 2013.

The new policy will promote air conditioner enterprises to continuously upgrade their products, which may lead to a tilt of domestic air-conditioners from fixed-frequency to inverter, which means the domestic market share of difluorochloromethane (R22) will be replaced by R410a. In this way, the market demand for difluoromethane (R32) and pentafluoroethane (R125), the main raw materials of R410a, will increase. At present, the market share of inverter air-conditioners is about 46%. Furthermore, it's estimated that the proportion will rise too.

Suzhou HiPro to Expand Bio-polyamide Capacity

The first issue of Biomaterials China News published by CCM International indicates that Suzhou HiPro Polymers Co., Ltd. (Suzhou HiPro), a leading enterprise specialized in production and marketing of bio-polyamide (bio-nylon) from castor oil, will launch a new production line with capacity of 10,000t/a in Q3 2012.

Suzhou HiPro started the construction of the new production line on June 16, 2011 and might continue expanding its bio-polyamide capacity in the next several years. Mr. Dong, sales manager from Suzhou HiPro introduced that its bio-polyamide output may increase from about 1,000 tonnes in 2010 to about 1,600 tonnes in 2011, thanks to the gradually increasing demand from some high-end products, such as superior automobiles and electronic products.

As the largest bio-polyamide producer in China, Suzhou HiPro is very confident on the development prospect of bio-polyamide, especially in China.

Although average sales price of bio-polyamide is two-three times of that of oil-based polyamide, biopolyamide has the following advantages. As an environmental friendly material, bio-polyamide may be more popular in domestic automobile industry, electronic products industry and plastic industry.

Currently, China is the second largest castor seed production country in the world and China's castor seed output volume accounts for 20% of the total in the world, which can provide sufficient raw material for domestic bio-polyamide producers.

Market of Rice Insecticides to Keep On Increasing

As one of key rice planting countries, China’s rice planting area exceeds 29.63 million hectares, accounting for about 18.9% of the total rice planting area in the world and 18.68% of China's total crop planting area. The domestic consumption of rice insecticides on rice accounts for about 10% of the total pesticide consumption in China.

In recent years, many MNCs have attached great importance to the promotion of rice insecticides in China, which intensified the market competition of rice insecticides in China. It is certain that the market size of rice insecticides will keep on increasing and the market competition will become fiercer in the following years, signifying more opportunities and challenges in the rice insecticides market in China.

Currently, the share of chlorpyrifos is the largest by volume and the share of abamectin is the largest by value in China’s rice insecticide market.

The rice insecticide market will mainly follow the trend of low toxicity, practical effectiveness and environmental friendliness, influenced by the occurrence and resistance of rice insects, as well as the development of crops.

It is predicted that the market share of pymetrozine and imidacloprid will enlarge, and acephate will lose some market share, and the share of other major rice insecticides will be relatively stable.

More details about the future development of China’s rice insecticides market will be presented in CCM International’s new report of Survey of Rice Insecticides in China. The report gives you a comprehensive understanding of China’s rice insecticides market from aspects of supply, demand, major products, MNCs’ dynamic, future development, etc. If you need more information about this report, please feel free to contact us at econtact@cnchemicals.com.

Sucrose Supply Rise May Slow down Fast Development of Starch Sugar

According to Mr. Ma, Vice Chairman of the China Sugar Association (CSA), China's output of sucrose may reach 12 million tonnes in the extraction season of 2011/2012 (from October 2011 to April 2012), which may slow down the fast development of starch sugar, such as high fructose corn syrup (HFCS) and glucose, according to CCM’s December issue of Sweeteners China News.

On 1 November, China's Production and Sales Meeting of Sucrose in Extraction Season of 2011/2012 was held in Haikou City, Hainan Province. In accordance with the meeting, the continuous diminished output of sucrose in recent three years is likely to be ended, and the output of sucrose may increase by about 14.83% in extraction season of 2011/2012 over that in 2010/2011. However, the expected increase in sucrose supply may slow down the fast development of starch sugar through reducing the replacement demand for starch sugar.

Compared with other sweeteners such as high intensity sweeteners and functional oligosaccharides, the sweetness, properties and application ranges of starch sugar are much closer to those of sucrose. And domestic starch sugar industry is benefited from the inadequate supply and price increase of sucrose; thus the improvement in sucrose industry can impact the starch sugar industry obviously.

The demand growth of starch sugar may decrease due to the increase in sucrose supply in 2012. In recent three years, inadequate sucrose supply in the past three extraction seasons of sucrose has given a boost to starch sugar's development. For example, both the outputs of sucrose in the extraction seasons of 2009/2010 and 2010/2011 were four million tonnes less than the sucrose consumption (TABLE), which has offered more potential market shares to other sweeteners, especially starch sugar. Meanwhile, starch sugar has developed well since 2009. For instance, the total output of starch sugar is expected to reach about 10 million tonnes in 2011 with a yearly growth rate of 8.7%. According to the CSA, the consumption of sucrose may continue to be about 14 million tonnes in 2012, in consideration of which, the replacement demand for starch sugar may reduce in 2012 due to the output increase of sucrose, which may reduce the total demand growth of starch sugar in 2012.

Besides, the increase in sucrose supply may further drive down the sucrose price, which may influence the gross margin of starch sugar producers. Caused by an inadequate sucrose supply, sucrose price has mainly shown a rising trend from October 2008 to August 2011. Chinese government has released sucrose stock for eight times with a total volume of 1.66 million tonnes in the first eight months of 2011, aided by which, the sucrose price has begun to decrease since August 2011. The increase in sucrose supply in the extraction season of 2011/2012 may further impel the sucrose price decrease in 2012, which may weaken the main advantage of starch sugar—competitive price—and suppress the price of starch sugar in 2012. In fact, though prices of starch sugar's raw materials—corn and corn starch—have deceased in recent few months due to the corn harvest, it is estimated that they may increase again in 2012. Therefore, the gross margin of starch sugar may decrease in the future.

Starch sugar producers admit the influence of the expected sucrose supply, but they also believe that the starch sugar industry will develop in 2012. For example, a sales manager of Zhucheng Dongxiao Biotechnology Co., Ltd., one main glucose producer with capacity of 300,000t/a, expressed that the demand for starch sugar will increase in 2012 thanks to its lower price than sucrose, but its growth rate may be lower than that of 2011 due to the increase in sucrose supply. In general, the starch sugar industry will keep on developing in 2012, but the speed may be slower.

Huge Vegetable Seed Market in China

A report, entitled Seed Treatment for Vegetable Seed in China by CCM International, indicates that there is huge vegetable seed market in China to attract many overseas investors.

At present, China is the largest vegetable producer in the world. Vegetable planting areas in China increased to 18.70 million ha. in 2010 , up 1.55% compared with that of the last year. And greenhouse vegetable in China has witnessed impressive development in the past decades. The greenhouse vegetable planted areas in China hits 4.50 million ha. in 2010. China is also the biggest greenhouse vegetable producer in the world.

China has become the biggest vegetable seed market in the world, because of the large vegetable planting areas. The market value of vegetable seed ranks No.2 among all domestic seed industries. China consumes over 40,000 tonnes of vegetable seed every year, valued from USD1.58 billion to USD1.90 billion at present.

The huge vegetable seed market attracts many overseas investors. At present, there are over 70 overseas seed companies in China, most of whom are engaged in vegetable seed business.
