Registrations of thiamethoxam formulations soar in China

According to Insecticides China News 1309 issued by CCM, Recently, Syngenta is busy with the promotion of its thiamethoxam–based seed treatment product (Cruiser), by holding two Cruiser Vigor Forum in Guangdong and Shandong. The product's excellent performance and Syngenta's professional promotion work are very impressive. However, Syngenta will face intense competition from Chinese companies in its thiamethoxam business.

Besides thiamethoxam technical, many Chinese pesticide companies are actively registering thiamethoxam formulation products. By 16 July 2013, 48 thiamethoxam registrations had been approved in China, including 34 of formulations. Among the formulations registrations, 13 are from domestic companies.

The thiamethoxam formulations' registration at present is only the tip of the iceberg. It will soar in the coming one to two years. According to data from the Institute for the Control of Agrochemicals, Ministry of Agriculture (ICAMA), pesticide companies had filed 448 registration applications for thiamethoxam formulations in China, by 16 July 2013.

Before 2010, registration application of thiamethoxam formulations in China was very small, usually less than ten each year. However, the application jumped to 72 in 2010 and 74 in 2011. In 2012, the application times even hit 151, up 104% year on year. This trend continued in 2013. By 16 July 2013, the application times had hit 110.

It is very easy to understand the boom of registration application since 2010. Syngenta’s patent for thiamethoxam in China expires in 2013 and it takes two to three years for a company to register a pesticide formulation in China. As a result, many domestic companies started to file their registration applications in 2010, so that they may launch their thiamethoxam formulation products in 2013 or 2014.

The application for registrations of thiamethoxam formulations include 34 kinds of products. Thiamethoxam–single formulation is the most popular one, with the application times of 303, accounting for 67.63% of the total. Besides, the registration applications of some mixed formulations, such as thiamethoxam+pymetrozine, thiamethoxam+abamectin and thiamethoxam+lambda-cyhalothrin are also very popular. For other mixed formulations, their application times are less than ten.

Most registration applications of the thiamethoxam formulations are targeted on many crops, but most of them are focusing on rice for the control of plant hopper.

These registration applications of thiamethoxam formulations come from 209 companies. Almost all the big domestic pesticide formulations companies have filed registration application of thiamethoxam formulations. Five companies' registration application times exceed ten and the total registration application times of these companies hit 77, accounting for 17.19% of the total.

Shaanxi Meibang Group is the most active company, with the registration application times of 21. The company tries to register thiamethoxam targeted on many kinds of crops, such as rice, wheat, corn, cotton, tea, vegetable and horticultural crops.

With so many registration applications, it is believed that thiamethoxam formulations products will witness a blowout in domestic market in the coming two to three years. The potential for market disruptions of thiamethoxam formulations in domestic market is very high.

However, even for those companies that have filed registration applications, there are two opposite opinions.

"We filed the registration application for thiamethoxam formulations in 2012, but we are not optimistic about the future of this product. The registration is just for the expansion of our product portfolio, and to meet more customers' needs," said an insider from Shanghai Lianbao Cropsciences Co., Ltd (Shanghai Lianbao).

In fact, like Shanghai Lianbao, many companies are not optimistic about the future of these products, but they still try to register it. Many companies are just following others blindly. They register products that others are registering.

But some companies' expectation for this product is very high. In their minds, the sales revenue of thiamethoxam is very huge and the application field is still expanding, so it is not hard to get a slice of cake. Besides, they believe that the Chinese government will not ban thiamethoxam easily like EU.

93 new registrations of insecticide technical were approved in China in 2012

According to statistics from the Institute for the Control of Agrochemicals, Ministry of Agriculture (ICAMA), there were 93 new registrations (not including the updating of the old registrations) of insecticide technical approved in China in 2012. These 93 new registrations covered 58 kinds of insecticide technical, with a total of 67 registrants from abroad and within China. Among these 58 kinds of insecticide technical, there were 51 agriculture insecticides and seven hygienic insecticides according to CCM January by Issue of Insecticides China News

Figures indicate that three neonicotinoid insecticides, namely thiamethoxam, imidacloprid and acetamiprid, were the top registrations by quantity in 2012. Of these, thiamethoxam technical was the most frequently registered, with six new registrations in 2012. Before 2012, there was one registration of thiamethoxam technical acquired by Syngenta who is the owner of the patent for thiamethoxam. With the patent expiration approaching in July 2013, thiamethoxam will continue to be registered by more and more companies in the future. It is predicted that large-scale production of thiamethoxam will be put into operation, thus the cost may decrease and the price decline. Meanwhile, soaring registrations will bring about other problems such as overcapacity and intense competition.

Except thiamethoxam, imidacloprid and acetamiprid, the registration quantity of other insecticide technicals was less than four. It is worth noticing that some insecticides were firstly registered in 2012. Most of them are new products with strong competitiveness, including cyflumetofen, cyantraniliprole, spinetoram, etoxazole, flufiprole, fufenozide, ivermectin, etc. Some of them should replace older insecticides which suffer from worsening insect resistance.

As for registrants, there are nine companies, namely, Jiangsu Changlong Chemicals Co., Ltd., Anhui Changtai Chemical Co., Ltd., Jiangsu Subin Agrochemical Co., Ltd., Mesa Tech Co., Ltd., Shangyu Nutrichem Co., Ltd., Shijiazhuang Richem Co., Ltd., Sinochem Ningbo (Lianyungang) Chemicals Co., Ltd., Zhejiang Heben Pesticide & Chemicals Co., Ltd. and Sumitomo Chemical Co., Ltd., with more than two new registrations of insecticide technical.

Australia halts the anti-dumping investigation on Chinese glyphosate formulations

After nearly six months' investigation, Australian Customs and Border Protection Service (CBP) which initiated anti-dumping investigation on several Chinese glyphosate formulations in Feb. 2012 announced on 2 Aug., 2012 that it will halt the anti-dumping investigation on Chinese glyphosate formulations on the grounds that no anti-dumping evidence is showed in the investigation results, according to CCM International’s  August issue of Crop Protection China News.

Appealed by Nufarm Limited and Accensi Pty Ltd., manufacturer of formulated glyphosate in Australia, four types of imported formulations from China to Australia with HS code of 38089300, namely glyphosate 360 (41% glyphosate IPA), glyphosate 450 (51% glyphosate IPA), glyphosate 570 (62% glyphosate IPA) and glyphosate 680 (the formulated dry form 680g/kg SG), have been involved in the investigation.

Although facing anti-dumping was considered to be a really big deal for domestic glyphosate enterprises, the anti-dumping investigation initiated by Australia did not seem to bother domestic glyphosate enterprises much.

"It will somehow bring a positive influence to our company's glyphosate business but not much because Australia is not our main overseas market. The export value of our glyphosate products to Australia was merely USD4 million in 2011, accounting for 0.19% of the total glyphosate revenue," said Zhejiang Wynca Chemical Industry Group Co., Ltd., one of the largest glyphosate producers in China which won the long-run glyphosate anti-dumping case initiated by the EU recently.

Other domestic glyphosate giants, such as Jiangsu Yangnong Chemical Co., Ltd. and Nantong Jiangshan Agrochemical & Chemicals Co., Ltd., expressed that they didn't directly export glyphosate to Australia, so their glyphosate business will not be affected much by Australia's decision to halt investigation.

As a counter party against the anti-dumping investigation, the written protest from Pacific Agriscience Pte Ltd. (Pacific Agriscience), a Singapore-based agrichemicals enterprise in Australia, helped a lot in the process of anti-dumping investigation on Chinese glyphosate formulations.

Representing the suppliers of Australian agrichemicals, Pacific Agriscience appealed to the CBP in March 2012 that since most of glyphosate formulation products imported from China were qualified products of glyphosate 450 which accorded with the standards set by Australian pesticides and veterinary medicines authority, those products that were appealed by Nufarm Limited and Accensi Pty Ltd. didn't constitute dumping in Australia.

In the defense of Pacific Agriscience, the glyphosate formulation products originated from China from Jan. 2011 to Dec. 2011 did not like those products from the market of Australia. So far, the mainstream glyphosate formulation products in Australia are glyphoste 450, glyphoste 510, glyphoste 540 and glyphoste 570, but those in China are 10% glyphosate SL which are extracted from glyphosate TK. Thus, there is no comparability among the products imported from China and those on the market of Australia.

Additionally, although it seemed to be very familiar outwardly with the products, such as glyphosate 360 (41% glyphosate IPA) and glyphosate 680, from the market of China and Australia, there were indeed differences in the surfactants of the products. Manufactures in China didn't use ethoxylated tallow amine in 41% glyphosate IPA products which Monsanto and most Australian glyphosate manufacturers used as surfactants.

The cancellation of the anti-dumping investigation this time is considered to be another typical winning case that domestic glyphosate enterprises can take the example of when facing glyphosate anti-dumping investigation in the future. Plus, frequent anti-dumping investigations on domestic glyphosate products also alert domestic glyphosate producers to further enhance international competitiveness and build up self-owned brands, rather than just rely on seizing market with low price.

What is the Future Consumption of Major Rice Insecticide Products?

CCM International has released November Issue of Insecticides China News recently, revealing the future consumption of major rice insecticide products.

As one of the most important pesticide in China, rice insecticide attracts much attention. Rice insecticide products can be divided into three categories based on the development trend of future consumption. The first category will enjoy consumption rise in the future; the second one will see stable development and the third one will face drop.

Chlorantraniliprole and flubendiamide are the hottest rice insecticide products. DuPont's 200g/l chlorantraniliprole SC has become one of the most important pesticides to combat rice leaf roller in China since 2008. Syngenta's 20% thiamethoxam • 20% chlorantraniliprole WDG, Bayer CropScience's 3.3% abamectin • 6.7% flubendiamide SC are also widely used in China. Thanks to good control effect, these products are expected to have a growing consumption in the future.

The consumption of imidacloprid and thiamethoxam (both for seed treatment) is expected to increase in the future because of the good control effect against rice black streaked dwarf disease.

As of the second category, the consumption of chlorpyrifos, abamectin, buprofezin, dichlorvos, triazophos, nitenpyram, acetamiprid, acephate and phoxim is expected to keep stable in the near future, because most Chinese pesticide companies are producing and marketing the formulations of these products.

The consumption of some old and highly toxic products such as isocarbophos, phorate and bisultap will decrease in the future. With the increase in public awareness and demand for safe foods, the application of highly toxic products will surely face tough restriction from the government.

The above is extracted from Insecticides China News 1111. More Headline News please check:
-The consumption of insecticides such as chlorantraniliprole, flubendiamide on China's rice insecticide market will continue to increase in the future, while that for some old products is expected to keep stable or decrease.
-Anhui Huaxing posts a net profit loss of about USD2.56 million (RMB16.24 million) in Q3 2011.
-Jiangsu Jialong finishes expanding its carbofuran technical capacity from 3,000t/a to 10,000t/a in around Sept.2011.
-Jiangsu Kwin obtains the approval on patent of its new insecticidal compound in Oct. 2011.
-Counterfeit spirodiclofen takes up most of the citrus acaricide market in China this year.
-Seed dressing agent market in China faces both chances and challenges.
-On 21 Sept. 2011, Jiangsu Jialong obtains the formal registration of 98% isoprocarb technical.
-The number of Bayer CropScience's pesticide registrations reduces in 2011.
-The market price of 95% lambdacyhalothrin technical in China has been growing since Sept. 2011.
-Acephate is facing slow development in China due to gloomy market demand and low profit of producers.

Consumption Forecast for Major Rice Insecticide Products

AgroChemEx was held at Shanghai Everbright Convention and Exhibition Center on 20-22 Oct. 2011. CCM International visited the exhibition to survey 2011 pesticide market. As the most important segment in China's pesticide industry, rice insecticide market still attracts much attention, though it underperforms this year due to the minor occurrence of pests, according to CCM’s November issue of Insecticides China News.

Insiders divided the rice insecticide products into three categories based on the development trend of future consumption. The first category will enjoy consumption rise in the future, the second one will see stable consumption and the third one will face drop.

Chlorantraniliprole and flubendiamide are the hottest products. After being introduced to China in 2008, DuPont's 200g/l chlorantraniliprole SC has become one of the most important pesticides to combat rice leaf roller in China. Besides, Syngenta's 20% thiamethoxam • 20% chlorantraniliprole WDG, Bayer CropScience's 3.3% abamectin • 6.7% flubendiamide SC are also widely applied by Chinese farmers. Thanks to good control effect, these products are expected to enjoy an increasing consumption in the future.

However, there are still some risks for these products. At present, some Chinese companies are illegally producing and marketing these products, which may impact the business of overseas companies.

Owing to the outbreak of rice black streaked dwarf disease, the consumption of imidacloprid and thiamethoxam (both for seed treatment) is expected to increase in the future. At present, some peasants adopt imidacloprid or thiamethoxam to treat rice seeds to prevent white-backed planthopper spreading rice black streaked dwarf virus, and achieve good control results.

The consumption of some excellent insecticides such as thiacloprid, pymetrozine, indoxacarb and spinosad are also expected to increase.

Cyantraniliprole and dinotefuran, having not been registered in China yet, already attract much attention. Insiders revealed that these two insecticides are expected to be registered in the near future and will grab big pesticide market share. The former is for the control of rice leaf roller and the latter for controlling rice planthopper.

The consumption of chlorpyrifos, abamectin, buprofezin, dichlorvos, triazophos, nitenpyram, acetamiprid, acephate and phoxim is expected to keep stable in the near future. At present, most of Chinese pesticide companies are producing and marketing the formulations of these products; the competition will be quite stiff.

The consumption of some old and highly toxic products such as isocarbophos, phorate and bisultap will decrease in the future. With the increase in public awareness and demand for safe foods, the application of highly toxic products will surely face tougher restriction from the government.

Insiders also said that the development of rice pests' resistance will have huge impact on the rice insecticide market. At present, pests' resistance to abamectin develops very quickly, which casts a cloud over the future of this product.
