Dow AgroSciences’ overview for South America

The company has reported worldwide outstanding results for 2012, with an increase of 13% (vs 2011) for total sales (compared to 11% average for agricultural (AG) market) that includes seed sales with 27% growth (vs 14% average of AG market) plus crop protection sales showing 10% growth (vs 9% average of AG market). The EBITDA increase was 7%, according to CCM’s latest monthly report, Crop Protection South America Monthly Report issued in March.

A key player for this growth certainly was South America (the second largest worldwide market of sales, behind North America). In the tropical and subtropical climate of this region are grown soybeans, corn, sugarcane, wheat, fruits, vegetables, sunflower oil seed and rice and the company offers a variety of crops protection and seeds to achieve the maximum yields and health protection, as well as for livestock through pasture’s products.

A wide selection of herbicides, insecticides and fungicides to meet customers' needs, as well as trait technologies such as HERCULEX® and POWERCORE™ in corn and WideStrike™ Insect Protection technology in cotton, is available.

The company is deploying the South American market strategy aimed to the following countries and main related products, as follows:

Argentina:
- Seeds (Hybrids and GMO) for corn, sunflower and sorghum.
- Herbicides for chemical fallow, 2-4 D products and glyphosate products (e.g Panzer Gold).

Chile's Agricultural Business to Grow Fast

Driven by strong demand for its fruits, Chile will embrace a rosy prospect of its crop protection market, as it has concluded more and more agricultural trade agreements with other countries, according to CCM International’s July issue of South America Crop Protection Monthly Report.

At the end of June 2012, both Chile and South Korea claimed that they have signed a trade agreement for blueberry. According to the agreement, Chilean blueberry will have the chance to be exported to South Korea from July 15, 2012. Nearly at the same time, China agreed to double the trade with Chile to USD60 billion by 2015, including export deals for produces. All these facts are an indication of the agricultural boost in Chile in the near future.

Produces especially the fruits from Chile are attractive around the world thanks to its strict agricultural standard in South America. Its fresh and processed agricultural produces are certified by Good Agriculture Practices (GAP). All the inputs used must be approved by official authorities, which has obligated use of only agrochemical with specific recommendations for each crop. These must be specified on the product's label. Through its policies, Chile dedicates itself to supplying produces which meet international food safety standards, so as to protect consumers and the environment.

Recently, fruit exporting business is the third exporting business in Chile. The total export value of fruit has been up to USD4.9 billion in 2011 from USD3.2 billion in 2007. Wherein, the grape exporting business accounts for the main part of the fruit exporting business, which valued at USD1.5 billion in 2011. Indeed, the grape planting area in Chile has been increasing gradually as the exporting demand of grape improves.

Pesticides in Chile are mainly formulations imported from other countries. The historical import data of pesticide can show the rising trend of Chilean pesticide market, with pesticide import value following fruit export value dynamic in the past years. Take the year of 2009 as a typical example, because of the outbreak of the worldwide economic crisis, global demand for fruits was inevitably weakened. Therefore, the fruit export value of Chile declined sharply in 2009, and pesticide import value was falling in response. Among different pesticide varieties, fungicides will be in the spotlight in Chilean agrochemical industry thanks to the increasing demand for fruit in Chile, as it can be widely used in fruit planting, storage and transporting.

In Chile, low import taxes caused the increasing import volume of pesticides from other countries such as China. There are a few formulations from local manufacturers, as it is difficult to compete with other countries that have free trade agreements with Chile. Therefore, most of the imported pesticides are finished products, with a small proportion of active ingredients. There is only one main local formulation manufacturer, which has very modern facilities and also manufactures for export. Some local formulation manufacturers focus on manufacturing basically sulfur-based dust and WP formulations, as well as cupric pesticides. As the export demand for Chilean produce increases, there will be the coexistence of opportunity and crisis for the local pesticide manufacturers in the near future.

Besides, Chilean agricultural planting development will also become the grow engine in its crop protection market.

Now Chile has focused its efforts on becoming a specialties market, with a broad agricultural variety allowed by its fortunate geography and climate. Currently, Chile not only does the research on new possibilities in crops, or fruit which may be historically unusual, but also tries its best to increase its yield and production through the planting technology.

Discover New Business in Boosting South America Crop Protection Market

South America has played a more and more important role in the global crop protection market. USDA has adjusted its estimation of crop production in Brazil and Argentina during 2011/12 South American growing season and published the estimation of crop production in Brazil and Argentina during 2012/13 South American growing season in May 2012.

It is reported that Brazil would soon secure clearance to ship corn to China, which is expected to become one of the world's biggest importers of the grain, the Brazilian Ministry of Agriculture said. At the end of April 2012, China has agreed to import Argentine corn. Brazil is the second corn exporter to China in South America.

As GM corn from Brazil will enter into the Chinese corn market officially in the near future, the increasing demand from China will boost the planting of corn in Brazil, especially the GM corn. Actually, it was the first time for Brazil to promote GM corn varieties in its domestic areas in 2011. This action brought the large success for Brazilian corn planting, greatly increasing its corn production in 2011. According to USDA, the production of corn in Brazil increases to 67.00 million tonnes in 2011 from 57.40 million tonnes in 2010. In 2011, GM corn varieties' proportion has reached 83% of the total corn varieties in Brazil, nearly 50% higher than that of 2010.

What is the estimated crop production in Brazil and Argentina during 2012 and 2013 respectively?  What kind of influence it will make on South American crop protection market? You may find answers in the June issue of South America Crop Protection Monthly Report, published by CCM International.

Soybean Planting's Fast Growth in Uruguay

The historically high prices moved actively into Uruguayan soybean market again, and this situation attracted the farmers in Uruguay to participate in the soybean planting. In May 2012, in Nueva Palmira, a main grain port in the country, the purchasing price of soybean was as high as USD540/t. The strong price of soybean in Uruguay happened once in 2008, which was about USD614/t, according to CCM International’s June issue of South America Crop Protection Monthly Report.

Recently, in Uruguay, 30% of the soybean has been harvested with a yield higher than expected (above 1.78 tonnes per ha.). This good result is mainly contributed by the effects of late rains in May 2012. Compared with the situation of Uruguay, 80% of soybean has been harvested in Brazil with a yield of 2.60 tonnes per ha., but in Argentina, because of the heavy rain hindering the harvesting process during Q2 2012, only 50% has been harvested with a yield below expectation, which is estimated at about 2.39 tonnes per ha.

"For soybean farmers, it is an excellent opportunity to capitalize and prepare for the next planting in 2012/13," said Gonzalo Gutierrez, head of the Agro-business Department from the Agriculture School in Uruguay. The strong price of soybean in Uruguay and the promising harvesting result will promote more Uruguayan farmers to involve in soybean planting.

According to a new estimation released by USDA in May 2012, the planting area of soybean in Uruguay during 2012/13 will be at the peak of 950,000 ha., 50,000 ha. higher than that in 2011/12. Soybeans are set to establish several records in Uruguay in 2012: it is estimated that Uruguay's export value of soybean will be above USD1 billion; meanwhile, it is the first time that soybean will overtake beef as the leading export item in Uruguay in 2012. It is forecasted that soybean's planting area will be over one million ha. in 2013/14.

In fact, farmers in Uruguay are more and more energetic to plant soybean instead of other crops. On one hand, for the international market, the increasing soybean demand from China boosts the export volume of soybean in South America, which is one of the main planting areas of soybean in the world, especially in 2012; Uruguay is expected to export more soybeans to China to meet the soybean demand because of the decreasing production in Argentina. On the other hand, some domestic factors drive Uruguayan farmers to be involved in soybean planting.

Firstly, increasing construction of new soybean squeezing facilities and biodiesel plants results in the increasing soybean demand in the domestic market. In 2007, National Administration of Fuels, Alcohol and Cement (ANCAP) of Uruguay published a law that mandated diesel shall be mixed with 5% biodiesel beginning from 2012. Furthermore, the gasoline shall be mixed with 5% bioethanol in 2015. Recently, biodiesel is mainly produced from soybean in Uruguay, which means that the domestic consumption of soybean will be largely increased by the policy enforcement.

Secondly, wheat or corn farmers in Uruguay are pessimistic about their profit margin of their produces, because the prices of wheat and corn are not as attractive as that of soybean and the market outlook is not so promising. "Much wheat remains unsold and market price prospects are not encouraging as a year ago, when prices were significantly higher," said Gutierrez. In fact, due to the high storage and the increasing production of wheat, the wheat price becomes unattractive compared with soybean whose price is at a high level recently. Those wheat or corn farmers prefer to rent land for the soybean production, and even rent land to Argentine for soybean planting.
