China's PO price has been increasing from early May 2013

According to Biomaterials China News which was issued by CCM in October, the domestic ex-works price of propylene oxide (PO), a raw material of polypropylene carbonate (PPC), has been rising since early May 2013. The price has increased from USD1,880.1/t in early May 2013 to USD2,115.1/t in late Sept. 2013, up by approximately 12.5%. There are three main factors behind the price uptrend of PO in May-Sept. 2013.

Firstly, many PO enterprises undertook equipment maintenance of their PO production facilities during April-June 2013, which led to the tight supply during this period and thus causing an increase in the domestic PO price. In China, due to the highly concentrated production capacity in the domestic PO industry (the capacity of top six PO enterprises accounted for 75.7% of China's total in 2012), the market supply of PO is reduced significantly when the major enterprises are undertaking equipment maintenance.

Secondly, the domestic price of the raw materials for PO witnessed an increase in July-Sept. 2013, which provided support for the domestic PO price. According to related statistics, the producer prices of propylene in East China and liquid chlorine in China have increased by 11.0% and 25.4% respectively from July 2013 to Sept. 2013. Propylene and liquid chlorine are two main raw materials of PO.

Thirdly, the increasing market demand from downstream industries also drove up the PO price from July 2013. Along with the PPC industry, domestic PO is also consumed in the polyether polyol (PPG) industry, which accounts for approximately 75% of the total PO consumption. According to Wang Hongke, a salesman of Befar Group Co., Ltd. (a leading PO supplier in China), Sept. and Oct. coincide with the peak consumption season for PPG every year, which helped to boost the demand for PO and in turn drove up the domestic PO price.

However, the increasing price of PO has had little effect on the domestic PPC price, despite PO accounting for 60%-70% of the total production cost of PPC resin. According to CCM's price monitoring, the average ex-works price of PPC from the major domestic manufacturers increased slightly from USD4,520/t in May 2013 to USD4,560/t in Sept. 2013, only up 0.9%.

The inability of PPC manufacturers to raise the price of PPC is the key factor behind its relatively stable price. Mr. Zhao, Sales Manager of Nanyang Zhongju Tianguan Low Carbon Technology Co., Ltd. (the largest PPC producer in China with a capacity of 22,500t/a), observed that PPC manufacturers may lose customers if they raise the PPC price in view of the currently small domestic PPC market. This is because PPC is very expensive compared with traditional plastics such as low density polyethylene (LDPE, currently priced at     USD2,025.9/t) or polypropylene (PP, currently at USD1,855.8/t). Even biodegradable plastics such as PLA, which is currently priced at USD4,401/t, are more cost competitive than PPC.
In summary, the increasing PO price has brought great cost pressure to domestic PPC enterprises, and their profit will be reduced. PPC producers should pay more attention to the downstream products. PPC producers can take actions to improve the competitiveness of PPC in the plastics marketplace, such as improving the comprehensive properties of PPC resin such as its solvent resistance and oxygen insulation in order to expand the scope of application of PPC.

Two domestic erythritol producers have contradicting erythritol sales performance in H1 2013

According to CCM’s latest newsletter, Sweeteners China News 1310, Two Chinese erythritol producers, namely Baolingbao Biology Co., Ltd. (Baolingbao, whose production capacity of erythritol is 4,000t/a in China) and Shandong Binzhou Sanyuan Biotechnology Co., Ltd. (Binzhou Sanyuan, production capacity of erythritol is 5,000t/a in 2013), showed contradicting performance in erythritol sales in H1 2013. It is worth mentioning that Baolingbao is a leading functional sugar producer in China having several functional sugar products, while the erythritol business of Binzhou Sanyuan's contributed the total revenue for the company.

Data from the 2013 semi-annual report of Baolingbao revealed that its erythritol business performed poorly in H1 2013. The gross profit of Baolingbao's erythritol reached as high as USD0.81 million in H1 2012, but it decreased by 71% YoY to USD0.23 million in H1 2013. Baolingbao expressed that the poor performance of its erythritol was mainly attributed to the negative effect of the RMB appreciation and the demand decrease from several foreign countries. The appreciation of RMB caused the lower RMB export price (relative to the fixed dollar price for erythritol), reducing the gross profit margin. The gross profit margin of the company's sugar alcohol business decreased to 7.66% in H1 2013 from 15.87% in H1 2012. Besides, Baolingbao also indicated that some political factors caused decreases in its export volume. For example, the export volume to Japan and Philippines decreased in H1 2013 compared to H1 2012, due to the political disputes between China and these two countries.

Baolingbao could not explain well the poorer sales performance of its erythritol in comparison to that of Binzhou Sanyuan's. According to the 2013 semi-annual report of Binzhou Sanyuan, the revenue of the company's erythritol increased to USD1.37 million in H1 2013, with a YoY up of 36.10%. Binzhou Sanyuan was honest to express that the RMB appreciation also brought negative effects on its product's export price in H1 2013 but the company focused on cost reduction and product quality. For example, the company actively established a cooperation with the well known Chinese research institutions to improve its R&D ability and hence its revenue growth. The year-on-year increase rate of erythritol's cost of sales in H1 2013 was just 16.93%, far lower than the one of its revenue at the same time. And the gross profit margin of erythritol of Binzhou Sanyuan also increased to 17.89% in H1 2013.

It is crucial that Baolingbao invest in the R&D in line with Binzhou Sanyuan. As a producer exclusively engaging in the production of erythritol, Binzhou Sanyuan devotes its energy to the research and sales of its erythritol. On the contrary, due to its diverse product range, Baolingbao cannot focus entirely on erythritol's sales. As a result, under the adverse conditions such as the RMB appreciation in H1 2013, Binzhou Sanyuan could depend on product's high quality to attract more downstream customers from overseas market, enjoying more profit compared to the same period of 2012.

For domestic erythritol producers, the objective conditions are the same. Subjective factors, such as more investment in quality improvement and market exploration, will become the determinants to obtain good performance, especially under the bad objective conditions. As an export-oriented industry, the export volume of China's erythritol decreased sharply, from over 2,800 tonnes in the first five months of 2012 to just about 1,900 tonnes in the same period of 2013. Under the negative export conditions, domestic erythritol producers should have a positive attitude to solve their problems.

Guangxi: rice acreage shrinks and competition rises among seed suppliers

Eyeing at higher plant efficiency, a number of farmers give up rice planting and turn to other crops, such as sugarcane, corn, mulberry and eucalyptus, or change the double cropping of rice per year into single cropping per year.

Despite the shrinking acreage of rice in Guangxi, the hybrid rice seed market, especially the late-season rice seed market, still attracts rice seed players both inside and outside Guangxi. Due to the special location, the sales season of late-season rice seeds in Guangxi is usually at the mid of June every year, much later than that in northern regions, which provides a separate market for rice seed players.

There are quite abundant rice varieties in Guangxi market and the competition is increasingly intense.

Some excellent rice varieties, such as Y Liangyou1, Shenliangyou5814 and Zhongzheyou1 promoted by rice seed players outside Guangxi have occupied a leading position in Guangxi market. Compared with adventive rivals, local rice seed suppliers are generally weak in sales and breeding capacity, but there are still some excellent varieties bred by local agricultural institutes recognized in the market, such as Teyou582 and Yexiangyou9.

Hybrid rice seeds are in the state of excess supply in Guangxi. Revealed by Tang Zhongping, Deputy Director of Guangxi Seed Administration Bureau, the total demand for hybrid rice seeds was around 12 million kg in 2012 while the supply exceeded 17.80 million kg, with the supply and demand ratio hitting 1.48:1.

It is expected that the market share of high-quality rice varieties will have an uptrend in Guangxi. At present, growers are willing to plant rice varieties with soft, fragrant and good-tasting grain, instead of the simply high-yielding varieties. Actually, high quality already becomes the first requirement on a rice variety in Guangxi market.

Guangxi is one of the major rice planting regions in China, with rice acreage staying above 2 million ha. in recent years, about 60% of which is occupied by hybrid rice varieties. Based on geographical and climatic conditions, Guangxi rice planting is divided into four major areas, namely northern Guangxi, central Guangxi, southern Guangxi and highland areas. Overall, late-season rice makes up a large part in Guangxi, usually sowed around August every year.

Production and Market of Turpentine in China

CCM’s recently-issued report, Production and Market of Turpentine in China, which focuses on the current and potential market of two kinds of turpentine, namely gum turpentine (GT) and crude sulphate turpentine (CST), which are by-products of gum rosin and wood pulp respectively. Highlights of the report include: production situation of turpentine in the past few years in China (the latest data was updated as of H1 2013); analysis of export & import data of China’s turpentine during 2009–H1 of 2013; consumption pattern of turpentine in China during 2005–2012; forecast of China’s turpentine from 2013 to 2017, in which the estimated data related to the output volume, export volume, and consumption volume of China’s turpentine are provided.

It is known that China has abundant pine resources, which has supported China to be the largest producer of gum turpentine in the world—with the contribution rate of about 45%. Nowadays, China’s gum turpentine is mainly used to produce terpene resin, synthetic camphor, terpineol, etc.

Generally speaking, China’s gum turpentine production is greatly influenced by the production of gum rosin. Guangxi, Yunnan, Guangdong, Fujian and Jiangxi provinces are the top five gum turpentine production regions in China during 2004–2012, and the total output of gum turpentine contributed by these five regions accounted for over 85% of the total output nationwide. According to CCM’s monitoring, the output of gum turpentine has changed in a big margin in recent five years. It dropped sharply in 2008 as affected by the snow storm in South China and global financial crisis. Influenced by the strong downstream demand, the output of China’s gum turpentine witnessed an increase in 2011. However, in 2012 and the first half of 2013, the output of China’s gum turpentine kept decreasing due to the reduction in the output of gum rosin.

With respect to the export situation, the main export destinations of China’s gum turpentine include Japan, Mexico, France, India, etc. China’s gum turpentine export volume remained high before 2007. But along with the cancellation of the export rebate rate for gum turpentine in April 2007 and rapid development of production of domestic gum turpentine derivatives, the export volume of gum turpentine dropped sharply in 2008 and 2009. In 2011, the export volume increased a lot, thanks to the recovery of world economy. However, it was small in 2012 because of the weak demand from overseas markets and fierce competition from counterparts in Indonesia.

The report also attaches importance to China’s gum turpentine price, which changed periodically as resulted from the seasonal price changes of oleoresin. During 2007–2010, the price of China’s gum turpentine has kept increasing and reached the peak in 2010. After 2011, the price began to decline drastically and hit the bottom in Aug. 2012 due to large stock and weak demand, but then it rebounded somehow.

As to crude sulphate turpentine (CST), only five active paper mills have recycled this material in 2012, and its output has kept decreasing in the past few years due to wood pulp production with fast-growing trees and pulp production with waste paper. In 2012, the output of CST was only 300 tonnes in China. At present, China’s crude sulphate turpentine is mainly used in fuel, paints & coating, solvent, and in the production of derivatives. In the report, CCM will give a complete introduction to CST, including its price, import and export situation, consumption, application, derivatives, as well as outlook of CST in the next ten years, and comparison of the turpentine availability between GT and CST, etc.
