Guangxi: rice acreage shrinks and competition rises among seed suppliers

Eyeing at higher plant efficiency, a number of farmers give up rice planting and turn to other crops, such as sugarcane, corn, mulberry and eucalyptus, or change the double cropping of rice per year into single cropping per year.

Despite the shrinking acreage of rice in Guangxi, the hybrid rice seed market, especially the late-season rice seed market, still attracts rice seed players both inside and outside Guangxi. Due to the special location, the sales season of late-season rice seeds in Guangxi is usually at the mid of June every year, much later than that in northern regions, which provides a separate market for rice seed players.

There are quite abundant rice varieties in Guangxi market and the competition is increasingly intense.

Some excellent rice varieties, such as Y Liangyou1, Shenliangyou5814 and Zhongzheyou1 promoted by rice seed players outside Guangxi have occupied a leading position in Guangxi market. Compared with adventive rivals, local rice seed suppliers are generally weak in sales and breeding capacity, but there are still some excellent varieties bred by local agricultural institutes recognized in the market, such as Teyou582 and Yexiangyou9.

Hybrid rice seeds are in the state of excess supply in Guangxi. Revealed by Tang Zhongping, Deputy Director of Guangxi Seed Administration Bureau, the total demand for hybrid rice seeds was around 12 million kg in 2012 while the supply exceeded 17.80 million kg, with the supply and demand ratio hitting 1.48:1.

It is expected that the market share of high-quality rice varieties will have an uptrend in Guangxi. At present, growers are willing to plant rice varieties with soft, fragrant and good-tasting grain, instead of the simply high-yielding varieties. Actually, high quality already becomes the first requirement on a rice variety in Guangxi market.

Guangxi is one of the major rice planting regions in China, with rice acreage staying above 2 million ha. in recent years, about 60% of which is occupied by hybrid rice varieties. Based on geographical and climatic conditions, Guangxi rice planting is divided into four major areas, namely northern Guangxi, central Guangxi, southern Guangxi and highland areas. Overall, late-season rice makes up a large part in Guangxi, usually sowed around August every year.

Serious oversupply has been commonly found in China's hybrid rice seed market in 2013

The stable or even shrank planting of hybrid rice also contributes to the serious oversupply. The rising planting costs (labor, seeds, pesticides, fertilizer, land rents, etc.) and unattractive purchase price of rice have affected rice growers' planting enthusiasm. As a result, rice growers in some southern regions like Hunan, Guangdong and Guangxi, are prone to cancel the cultivation of early season rice that offers low yield and benefits, simply replacing double-cropping rice (early season rice and late season rice) with single-cropping mid-season rice. The former paddy fields are even planted with fruit trees or other corps rather than rice in some grain planting areas of Guangxi and Guangdong, revealed by insiders engaged in rice seed business.

Hybrid rice generally maintains around 29.50 million ha. in recent years, occupying above 55% of China's total rice acreage (hybrid rice and open-pollinated rice) . Hybrid rice planting proportion is even higher in southern regions, where domestic rice planting is mainly concentrated.

Performance overview of listed seed companies in H1 2012

In H1 2012, the performances of listed seed companies present obvious differentiation, caused by industrial changes and operating strategies. Judging from the financial reports of the listed seed companies, industrial competition has been intensified. However, the seed players which are able to make reasonable adjustments to their operating strategies can often achieve a sound development, while the conservative players are often at a disadvantage in the competition. For domestic seed companies, an excellent variety with great potential usually means handsome profits, providing a powerful support for their business growth, according to CCM’s August Issue of Seed China News.

The oversupply of corn seeds is becoming more serious in 2012, following the similar situation in previous years. The homogeneous competition is rather common among domestic corn seed producers, mainly relying on promoting some old corn varieties which have entered the market for years. Mainly owing to the increasing costs of production materials and labor costs, the overall gross profit margin of corn seeds would have shown a downward trend. While for some listed seed companies which try to provide excellent seeds or promote new corn varieties with better integrated traits, they would be able to enhance their overall profit margin of corn seeds.

Taking Hefei Fengle Seed Co., Ltd. (Hefei Fengle) for example, the profit margin in corn seeds in H1 2012 sees a significant decline over the same period of last year. Actually, the company has cut its corn seed output in its production base of Gansu Province, mainly in view of the increasing production costs and the oversupply of corn seeds in national market. In addition, some old corn varieties such as "Xundan 20" and "Jidan 7" are still Hefei Fengle's main sources of revenue in corn seed business.

The unsatisfactory performances of Gansu Dunhuang Seed Co., Ltd. (Gansu Dunhuang) and Shandong Denghai Seeds Co., Ltd. (Shandong Denghai) in H1 2012 has caused a widespread concern in the industry. In previous years, the two companies greatly benefited from their separate joint ventures with Pioneer Hi-Bred International Inc., thanks to the sound performance of corn hybrid "Xianyu 335". Unfortunately, both the sales and profits of "Xianyu 335" seeds decreased sharply in 2012, which could be primarily attributed to oversupply of corn seeds in current market. As a result, Shandong Denghai has a declining performance and Gansu Dunhuang suffers a net loss in H1 2012.

For Yuan Longping High-tech Agriculture Co., Ltd. (Longping High-tech) which has been enhancing corn seed business, its revenue in corn seeds sees a sharp growth in H1 2012, mainly owing to the enlarged promotion of corn hybrid "Longping 206". However, its gross profit margin in corn seeds shows a certain decrease, mainly due to the rising production costs in the period.

In corn seed business, Winall Hi-tech Seed Co., Ltd. (Winall Hi-tech) has an increasing performance after acquiring two corn hybrids: "Gaoyu 2067" and "Yangguang 98". As a technology-oriented hybrid rice company, Winall Hi-tech is actively exploring its corn seed business. In H1 2012, Winall Hi-tech has a sharp growth in corn seed, with the gross profit margin increasing from 19.05% to 32.36%.

Compared with corn seed market, rice seed market has a relatively relaxed situation, reflected in light of oversupply and upward profit margin. There have been diversified hybrid rice seeds in the market, thanks to the advanced hybrid rice breeding level at home. Overall, hybrid rice seed companies which deliver higher-value rice seeds to farmers are able to make handsome profits. For example, Longping High-tech, Winall Hi-tech and Grand Agriseeds Technology, Inc. (Grand Agriseeds) generate increasing profits from hybrid rice seeds in H1 2012.

For Longping High-tech, the revenue and gross profit margin in hybrid rice seeds continue to increase in H1 2012, mainly attributed to its leading hybrid rice variety: "Y Liangyou 1", which was bred by Hunan Hybrid Rice Research Center (HHRRC). Moreover, "Shen Liangyou 5814", a super rice variety approved in 2012, has been well recognized by rice growers, thus contributing rising sales and profits to Longping High-tech.

The increasing exports of hybrid rice seeds would provide a force for domestic hybrid seed industry. As a world leader in developing rice hybrid technology, China has gradually increased the exports of hybrid rice seeds or enhanced foreign aid on hybrid rice technology in recent years. Under such the situation, domestic hybrid rice companies intend to develop or explore overseas markets. In terms of export value of hybrid rice seeds, Winall Hi-tech and Grand Agriseeds generate the growth of 91.23% and 88.49% in H1 2012, respectively.

The oversupply of hybrid rice seeds should not be ignored at home. Owing to continuously updated hybrid rice varieties and increased seed output, the competition in hybrid rice markets would be more and more intense in future. It is known that Guangdong Golden Rice Seeds Co., Ltd., a prominent hybrid rice company in South China, has reduced its hybrid seed production and promotion of some small varieties, in view of declined sales and intensified competition.

Diversified operation in seed products would be a good choice for domestic seed companies. For Longping High-tech and Winall Hi-tech which are striving to develop corn seed business while further enhancing their core business: hybrid rice seed, both witness a sound performance in H1 2012. Aiming to reduce the risk of single business, Grand Agriseeds is actively adjusting its operating structure of crop varieties, by enhancing the breeding and promotion of new corn varieties. However, Hefei Fengle which has a performance decline in seed business in H1 2012 has expanded other businesses like spice and agrochemical, with sales proportion over 50% of the total.

It is expected that Longping High-tech and Winall Hi-tech would seed continuous growth in the coming few years. It's reported that Longping High-tech already signed an agreement with Hunan Hybrid Rice Research in Nov. 2011, indicating that Longping High-tech will exclusively commercially operate all rice varieties bred by the latter by paying USD1.58 million (RMB10 million) each year. For Winall Hi-tech which is expert in hybrid rice breeding, its developing corn seed business and wheat seed business will generate more profits in future.

Shandong Denghai and Gansu Dunhuang, two leading corn seed producers at home, would undertake great pressure in H2 2012. In view of the decreasing performance of "Xianyu 335", the two companies will enhance the operation of other corn hybrids in future. For example, Gansu Dunhuang is striving to promote its new purchased corn hybrid: "Jixiang 1" and Shandong Denghai is strengthening the promotion of self-developed corn hybrids such as "Denghai 605".

China Exploring Overseas Markets on Hybrid Rice

China leads the world in breeding technology of hybrid rice with a large number of seed companies producing hybrid rice seeds. As domestic hybrid rice seed market tends to be saturated, some prominent companies are striving to enter foreign market, with great support from the government. It is believed that developing countries in Asia, Africa and Latin America shall become the emerging markets for China's hybrid rice companies, according to CCM’s December Issue of Seed China News.

Under the "Guidance for Promoting the International Development of Strategic Emerging Industries" (Guidance for Emerging Industries) issued in Sept. 2011, domestic seed companies are expected by the government to explore the emerging markets in Asia, Africa and Latin America. China's companies are encouraged to build production and demonstration zones in foreign countries and strengthen the overseas promotion for new crop varieties.

On 25 Dec., 2011, China National Rice Research Institute (CNRRI) cooperated with a local hybrid rice company to establish the ASEAN Rice Seed R&D Center in Guangxi Zhuang Autonomous Region (Guangxi), Southwest China. The new R&D center is committed to cultivating new hybrid rice varieties for local areas and Southeast Asian countries.

For the Southeast Asian countries such as Vietnam, Philippines, Indonesia, Thailand, with similar climatic conditions as the rice planting areas in the south part of China, could directly introduce hybrid rice varieties from Guangxi for trial planting.

In recent years, China has gradually enhanced the promotion of hybrid rice in foreign countries. A series of hybrid rice aid projects have been launched in other developing countries such as Pakistan, Indonesia, Philippines, Bangladesh, Uzbekistan, Guinea, etc.

With breeding stations or demonstration sites, China's hybrid rice is gradually recognized in foreign countries. For example, over 10 hybrid rice production demonstration sites have been built in Guinea, producing over 500 tonnes of rice seeds in 3,530 ha. rice planting areas now. It is understood that Madagascar already introduced over 30 hybrid rice varieties from China for trial planting.

Although the exports of hybrid rice seeds have constantly increased in recent years, the export destinations are only limited to a few countries such as Bangladesh, Myanmar, Philippines and Guinea, with a low level in both export volume and value.

Some industrial insiders believe that it would be a good strategy for domestic companies to establish hybrid rice demonstration zones in overseas countries, aiming to expand the local seed markets in the long run. For most African countries without strong sense of improved varieties, it may not easy for domestic companies to directly distribute hybrid seeds there. After demonstration and guidance, local farmers would be more receptive to improved varieties and fine seeds.

Encouraged by the government, some leading hybrid rice companies are actively exploiting overseas markets. For example, Longping High-tech is leading a Sino-Indonesian hybrid rice program, aiming to develop the best hybrid rice variety for Indonesia. Besides, the company also has a hybrid rice R&D center in Philippines which is committed to developing excellent hybrid rice.

Winall Hi-tech, another leading hybrid rice company, is striving to expand the hybrid rice market in Southeast Asia, with seed export business mainly covering Pakistan, Indonesia, Vietnam, etc. Actually, Winall Hi-tech is one of the key players exporting hybrid rice seeds to Southeast Asian countries.

With the increasing influence of hybrid rice worldwide, a number of overseas countries, especially those in Asia, Africa and Latin America are hoping to introduce hybrid rice technology from China. There should be a huge market space for hybrid rice seeds, as the coverage rate of hybrid rice is still very low in most foreign countries.

It is believed that the developing countries in Asia, Africa and Latin America which have maintained close relationship with China for years would provide a great platform for Chinese seed companies to achieve the internationalization in future. Of course, the talent resources and breeding techniques must be fully enhanced before domestic seed companies really lead the overseas hybrid rice markets.

Development of China’s Hybridization Breeding Soybean Keeps Growing

CCM International has published the latest Issue of Seed China News on November 30th , 2011, indicating that the development of soybean hybridization breeding is expected to improve the competitiveness of China's non-transgenic soybeans.

China is capably to produce hybridization breeding soybean. For example, Anhui Province is a major soybean-planting province in China, with an annual planting area of over 666,666.67 ha. (10 million mu). The province's soybean hybridization breeding, especially for high-protein soybeans, has led the country. By three-line breeding methods, some summer soybeans with higher yield, such as "Zayoudou 1", have been successfully cultivated and released in the province and surrounding areas.

It's believed that the new cross-breeding and cultivation technology would be essential to revitalize China's soybean industry. The improvement in soybean seed breeding would reduce farmers' purchase cost of hybrid soybean seeds. The planting efficiency of soybean would be greatly improved, with upgrading of yield and quality.

Many industrial insiders also advocate to enhance domestic protein processing business, in order to expand the consumption of non-transgenic soybeans. Actually, non-transgenic soybeans are thought to be the material most appropriate for protein processing. It appears that the demand for non-transgenic soybeans continues to increase globally, with the development of protein processing industry.

It’s noteworthy that some domestic oil companies still insist on extract oil mainly with non-tansgenic soybeans. "Only by building our non-GM brand can we compete with international cereals and oils giants," said Vice President of a cereals and oils industrial group in Heilongjiang Province, Northeast China.

All findings are from CCM International’s Seed China News 1111. The headline news include:
-The Government of Anhui Province released suggestions for developing modern seed industry, indicating the strategy to support leading seed companies.
-The two-line wheat breeding technology is expected to realize industrialization in China.
-China continues to attach importance to crop breeding through space mutation, aiming to develop more abundant variety resources.
-IRRI, CAAS and BGI jointly launched Rice 3,000 Genomes Project in Shenzhen City, South China.
-Winall Hi-tech buys "Wushan Simiao" to enrich the rice variety structure and make more profits in rice seeds.
-Hunan Jinjian is transferred by HJCI owing to HJCI’s lack of ability and willingness to strengthen the seed business.
-Shandong Denghai establishes a joint venture to expand business scope.
-Golden Rice sets up a special research department, aiming to build a commercial rice-breeding system.
-The developing hybridization breeding of soybean is expected to improve the competitiveness of China's non-transgenic soybeans.
-Multinational giants are marking great efforts to enhance seed treatment business in China.

China Soybean Breeding on the Rise

Opposite to the decreasing soybean production, the hybridization breeding of soybean is rising in China. The cross breeding system of soybean has been established in some areas. It is estimated that the breakthrough in soybean yield and quality would greatly improve the competitiveness of domestic non-transgenic soybeans, according to CCM’s November Issue of Seed China News.

Anhui Province is a major soybean-planting province in China, with an annual planting area of over 666,666.67 ha. (10 million mu). The province's soybean hybridization breeding, especially for high-protein soybeans, has led the country, mainly relying on the cooperation efforts of research institutes. By three-line breeding methods, some summer soybeans with higher yield, such as "Zayoudou 1", have been successfully cultivated and released in the province and surrounding areas.

It was reported in early Nov. 2011 that a highly efficient soybean breeding system was established in Jilin Province, a key soybean planting region located in Northeast China. After a male sterile line with high outcrossing rate was cultivated, the hybrid seed yield of soybean has been significantly increased. The seed breeding system combining the environment, insects and crop has been further improved. Then the industrialization of soybean seed breeding would be accelerated substantially.

Compared with other main crops like rice, corn and rapeseed, soybean is a most difficult crop to realize distant crossing. It has taken Chinese scientists many years to cultivate soybean male-sterile line and breeding hybrid varieties. The world's first hybrid soybean was born in China in Jan. 2003.

Although China owns the advantages in planting non-transgenic soybean in large areas, the soybean industry has not shown powerful competitiveness compared with the GM soybean industry. Owing to the high cost and low efficiency in growing soybeans, domestic farmers intends to plant other high efficiency or yield crops, such as hybrid rice and corn. Besides, the shrinking demand for non-transgenic soybean in processing industry also affected domestic soybean planting.

It's believed that the new cross-breeding and cultivation technology should be essential to revitalize China's soybean industry. The improvement in soybean seed breeding should cut farmers' purchase cost of hybrid soybean seeds. The planting efficiency of soybean would be greatly improved, with the upgrading of yield and quality.

As for developing excellent hybrid soybean, the cooperation between seed companies and research institutes should be encouraged. Companies should play a key role in promoting the commercialization of soybean breeding. According to Gai Junyi, a famous soybean expert, Shandong Shengfeng Seeds and Technology Co., Ltd. has collaborated with Nanjing Agricultural University to establish a modern soybean-breeding system.

It is noteworthy that some domestic oil companies still insist on extract oil mainly with non-tansgenic soybeans. "Only by building our non-GM brand can we compete with international cereals and oils giants," said Vice President of a cereals and oils industrial group in Heilongjiang Province, Northeast China.
