Two domestic erythritol producers have contradicting erythritol sales performance in H1 2013

According to CCM’s latest newsletter, Sweeteners China News 1310, Two Chinese erythritol producers, namely Baolingbao Biology Co., Ltd. (Baolingbao, whose production capacity of erythritol is 4,000t/a in China) and Shandong Binzhou Sanyuan Biotechnology Co., Ltd. (Binzhou Sanyuan, production capacity of erythritol is 5,000t/a in 2013), showed contradicting performance in erythritol sales in H1 2013. It is worth mentioning that Baolingbao is a leading functional sugar producer in China having several functional sugar products, while the erythritol business of Binzhou Sanyuan's contributed the total revenue for the company.

Data from the 2013 semi-annual report of Baolingbao revealed that its erythritol business performed poorly in H1 2013. The gross profit of Baolingbao's erythritol reached as high as USD0.81 million in H1 2012, but it decreased by 71% YoY to USD0.23 million in H1 2013. Baolingbao expressed that the poor performance of its erythritol was mainly attributed to the negative effect of the RMB appreciation and the demand decrease from several foreign countries. The appreciation of RMB caused the lower RMB export price (relative to the fixed dollar price for erythritol), reducing the gross profit margin. The gross profit margin of the company's sugar alcohol business decreased to 7.66% in H1 2013 from 15.87% in H1 2012. Besides, Baolingbao also indicated that some political factors caused decreases in its export volume. For example, the export volume to Japan and Philippines decreased in H1 2013 compared to H1 2012, due to the political disputes between China and these two countries.

Baolingbao could not explain well the poorer sales performance of its erythritol in comparison to that of Binzhou Sanyuan's. According to the 2013 semi-annual report of Binzhou Sanyuan, the revenue of the company's erythritol increased to USD1.37 million in H1 2013, with a YoY up of 36.10%. Binzhou Sanyuan was honest to express that the RMB appreciation also brought negative effects on its product's export price in H1 2013 but the company focused on cost reduction and product quality. For example, the company actively established a cooperation with the well known Chinese research institutions to improve its R&D ability and hence its revenue growth. The year-on-year increase rate of erythritol's cost of sales in H1 2013 was just 16.93%, far lower than the one of its revenue at the same time. And the gross profit margin of erythritol of Binzhou Sanyuan also increased to 17.89% in H1 2013.

It is crucial that Baolingbao invest in the R&D in line with Binzhou Sanyuan. As a producer exclusively engaging in the production of erythritol, Binzhou Sanyuan devotes its energy to the research and sales of its erythritol. On the contrary, due to its diverse product range, Baolingbao cannot focus entirely on erythritol's sales. As a result, under the adverse conditions such as the RMB appreciation in H1 2013, Binzhou Sanyuan could depend on product's high quality to attract more downstream customers from overseas market, enjoying more profit compared to the same period of 2012.

For domestic erythritol producers, the objective conditions are the same. Subjective factors, such as more investment in quality improvement and market exploration, will become the determinants to obtain good performance, especially under the bad objective conditions. As an export-oriented industry, the export volume of China's erythritol decreased sharply, from over 2,800 tonnes in the first five months of 2012 to just about 1,900 tonnes in the same period of 2013. Under the negative export conditions, domestic erythritol producers should have a positive attitude to solve their problems.

Profits of Chinese Saccharin Producers Decrease in 2011

From Feb. 27 to March 2, 2012, China Sugar Association (CSA), commissioned by the Ministry of Industry and Information Technology, ran a production examination on four state-mandated saccharin producers, namely Henan Kaifeng Xinghua Fine Chemical Factory (Henan Kaifeng), Tianjin North Food Co., Ltd. (Tianjin North), Tianjin Changjie Chemicals Co., Ltd. (Tianjin Changjie) and Shanghai Fortune Chemical Co., Ltd. (Shanghai Fortune). As disclosed in the examination, the profits of Chinese saccharin producers decreased obviously in 2011 due to high raw material cost and low selling price, according to CCM’s April issue of Sweeteners China News.

According to CSA's examination, the production plan of saccharin made by Chinese government was 19,000 tonnes in 2011, among which 3,200 tonnes was planned to be sold in China, and the left was planned to be exported. In fact, according to CSA, the actual output of saccharin was 18,204.34 tonnes in 2011, which completed 95.81% of the total production plan. In 2011, domestic sales volume and export volume of saccharin were 2,872.51 tonnes and 14,361.84 tonnes respectively, indicating that about 1,000 tonnes of saccharin was stocked. What's more important, CSA found that the overall profits of saccharin producers decreased obviously in 2011, and some producers even suffered loss or were on the verge of loss.

Firstly, high raw material cost exerted pressure on saccharin producers' profit obtaining. Phthalic anhydride is a key raw material for saccharin production, and China has mainly imported it to meet the domestic demand. However, the average import price of phthalic anhydride mainly showed a rising trend in 2011 over 2010 (FIGURE1). Referred to China Customs, the average import price of phthalic anhydride was about USD1,032/t in 2011, up 23% over 2010, which increased the raw material cost of saccharin. According to a salesman of Shanghai Fortune, the company's cost rose sharply in 2011, and its average purchasing price of phthalic anhydride showed an uptrend from 2011 to now, which climbed from USD1,300/t in 2011 to USD1,800/t in March 2012.

Unfortunately, the selling price of saccharin even fell in 2011 rather than increase with the sustained growth of phthalic anhydride's. According to CCM International's Sweeteners Database, the average ex-factory price of saccharin was lower in 2011 over 2010 (FIGURE2), which further reduced domestic saccharin producers' profits combined with the price increase of phthalic anhydride during 2011. For example, the average ex-factory price of saccharin in 2011 was USD6,006/t, with a year-on-year decrease of 7%, which may be driven by the intense competition in Chinese sweetener industry and illegal saccharin production. On one side, competition in domestic sweetener industry has become more and more intense owing to the emergence of new players and new capacities of other sweeteners, which continuously took up saccharin's market share, leading to its price drop. On the other side, saccharin has always been produced illegally in China in recent years, whose sales also reduced the demand for saccharin produced by the four manufacturers.

In Q1 2012, it is estimated that saccharin's profit may also decrease. For example, the average import price of phthalic anhydride kept on rising to USD1,632/t, while the average ex-factory price of saccharin decreased to USD5,262/t in Feb. 2012, indicating profit of saccharin may continue to decrease in Q1 2012. Though Chinese government declared that it will enhance the supervision of illegal saccharin production in 2012 and rectify the order of domestic saccharin market, the price increase of raw material, the price decrease of saccharin and the intense competition in sweetener industry will remain in the future, so saccharin's profit is likely to decrease in 2012.

Promising Future of High Fructose Corn Syrup

High Fructose Corn Syrup (HFCS) industry in China is enjoying sound development at present, which is estimated to have a promising future. According to CCM International's survey, the capacity of HFCS is expected to increase from about 1,200,000t/a in 2008 to 3,000,000t/a in 2011, with a compound annual growth rate (CAGR) of 35.72%. There are two reasons to drive the development of HFCS.

On one hand, demand of HFCS is increasing. HFCS is a perfect substitute for sucrose, because of HFCS' great taste and similar sweetness as sucrose. When price of sucrose goes up, HFCS becomes the first beneficiary. As the market price of sucrose is much higher than that of HFCS,  more and more downstream producers chose HFCS to replace sucrose, which boosts the increasing demand for HFCS. HFCS manufacturers begin to expand capacities of the product.

On the other hand, consumption increase also drives the development of HFCS. HFCS is mainly used in food, especially beverages and confectionery. In recent three years, Chinese beverage and confectionery industries have been growing rather fast, promoting the consumption of HFCS. According to statistics from National Bureau, the output of soft drinks reached about 66.9 million tonnes in the first seven months of 2011, up 23.36% over the same period last year. Besides, the output of confectionery rose to 1.07 million tonnes in the first seven months of 2011, up by 19.10% over the same period last year. Booming growth of the two industries greatly pushes forward the consumption of HFCS.

The promising future of HFCS attracts investment of five major producers, including Luzhou Bio-chem Technology Co., Ltd. (Luzhou Bio-chem), Shandong Xiangchi Group Co., Ltd., GBT-Cargill High Fructose (Shanghai) Co., Ltd., Wuhan COFCO Food Technology Co., Ltd. and Star Lake Bioscience Co., Ltd. (Star Lake Bioscience) All of them will be engaged in the production of F55, a major kind of HFCS.

The above is extracted from Sweeteners China News 1111. Please check below for more News:
-It is estimated that the rice starch sugar industry will develop better in the future, but its market share in the whole starch sugar industry may keep stable.
-Five High Fructose Corn Syrup (HFCS) projects will be launched soon, which may lead to the price decrease of HFCS in H2 2012.
-So far, many domestic producers of sucralose improve their production technology actively, which may lead to competitiveness rise and price decrease.
-In recent three years, domestic alitame industry developed slowly due to small capacity and high price, and the situation is estimated to continue in the next several years.
-On 5 October, ACT announced its new partnership with Sinosweet, aiming to develop the UK and Irish markets of aspartame.
-In October 2011, Shengxiangyuan puts its stevia sweetener production line with a total capacity of about 750t/a into trial production in Qufu City, Shandong Province, suggesting its business expansion ambition thanks to the increasing demand from the downstream.
-According to Suzhou Economic and Technological Development Zone, Anhui VitaSweet launches an acesulfame-K project with capacity of 5,000t/a in October 2011.
-On 15 October 2011, Layn published a notice to revise its performance in the first three quarters of 2011, which explains that the the company's net profit gets worse than expected.

Five HFCS Projects to be Launched

Five High Fructose Corn Syrup (HFCS) projects will be launched in China in the next few months, which may lead to the price decrease of HFCS in H2 2012, according to CCM’s November issue of Sweeteners China News.

According to CCM International's survey, five domestic HFCS producers will launch their HFCS projects in the near future, including Luzhou Bio-chem Technology Co., Ltd. (Luzhou Bio-chem), Shandong Xiangchi Group Co., Ltd., GBT-Cargill High Fructose (Shanghai) Co., Ltd., Wuhan COFCO Food Technology Co., Ltd. and Star Lake Bioscience Co., Ltd. (Star Lake Bioscience). All of them will be engaged in the production of F55, one main kind of HFCS. Among the five companies, two will solely focus on F55 thanks to its profitable prospect in the near future. (Please refer to Sweeteners China News 1110, p2).

The HFCS industry in China is enjoying sound development at present. In accordance with CCM International's research, the capacity of HFCS is estimated to increase from about 1,200,000t/a in 2008 to 3,000,000t/a in 2011, with a compound annual growth rate (CAGR) of 35.72%.

It is the HFCS industry's promising future that attracts the five producers to join in the business. On one hand, due to HFCS' great taste and similar sweetness as sucrose, it is a perfect substitute for sucrose. Thus, when the price of sucrose goes up, HFCS becomes the first beneficiary. In terms of China Sugar Index, the market price of sucrose in China has been showing a rising trend since October 2008, which reached USD1,198/t in September 2011, increasing 32.38% over the same period last year. Meanwhile, the prices of F42 and F55, the two major kinds of HFCS, rose by 13.01% and 23.17% respectively over September 2010. As seen from the below data, the price growth rate of sucrose was much higher than that of HFCS. Thus, more and more downstream producers chose HFCS to replace sucrose, boosting the demand for HFCS. Hence, HFCS manufacturers begin to expand capacities of the product.

On the other hand, consumption increase also drives HFCS development. Actually, HFCS is mainly used in food, especially beverages and confectionery. In the recent three years, Chinese beverage and confectionery industries have been growing rather fast, promoting the consumption of HFCS. In light of the National Bureau of Statistics, the output of beverages has been growing considerably during the past. For example, the output of soft drinks reached about 66.9 million tonnes in the first seven months of 2011, up 23.36% over the same period last year. Besides, the output of confectionery rose to 1.07 million tonnes in the first seven months of 2011, growing by 19.10% over the same period last year. Booming growth of the two industries greatly pushes forward the consumption of HFCS.

Therefore, most HFCS producers believe in HFCS' huge development potential. Take Star Lake Bioscience as a good example, Ms. Sun, a representative of the company's bond department, explained that the increasing demand for HFCS attracted Star Lake Bioscience to construct a new HFCS project in early 2011.

Besides, some HFCS producers launch new projects in order to improve product structure. In view of Luzhou Bio-chem, the company only has HFCS production lines of F42. As F55 is used more and more widely, Luzhu Bio-chem decided to build HFCS F55 production lines.

Normally, the price of HFCS is affected by corn supply and its downstream demand. Domestic price of corn may stay relatively stable in the rest months this year thanks to the expected bumper corn harvest, indicating corn supply won't have notable effect on HFCS price in the near future. In accordance with a report published by China National Grain and Oils Information Center (CNGOIC) in Aug. 2011, China's corn output is estimated to increase by 2.96% to about 182.5 million tonnes this year over 2010, and the price of corn may stay comparatively steady, maintaining the cost of HFCS which is made from corn.

Under the above conditions, the rising new supply of HFCS may be the main reason for its prospective price decrease. When those five HFCS projects with total capacity of 0.55 million t/a get launched, the supply of HFCS is estimated to increase abundantly, and its growth rate may also exceed that of HFCS demand from downstream industries. Therefore, HFCS price may decrease to some extend in the near future.

However, though the launches of those five HFCS projects may affect the price jointly, the five producers will not start keen competitions against each other owing to their different targeted sales regions. Because of HFCS' three months of short shelf life and high freight fees, companies usually market their products locally or nearby. Since the five producers are located in various regions around China, their newly launched HFCS projects will hardly overlap in marketing areas, avoiding contests against each other.
