Survey founds glyphosate and paraquat were Hunan's major herbicides for early rice in 2012

Aiming to establish the key market indicators of China's rice industry, CCM has carried out a syndicated research project, namely Syndicated Research Project of Hunan Rice Panel Data & Analysis Model, on rice production in Hunan Province——one of the largest rice production provinces in China, by conducting panel data investigations around basic information which include pesticides, seeds, fertilizers, diseases, pests and weeds, meteorology and agricultural products. The survey of pesticide's application features has been conducted in Hengyang City (Hengyang), Yueyang City (Yueyang) and Changde City (Changde) of Hunan Province and a total of 900 farmers in these three regions were interviewed.

In those three districts, the demand for pesticides from early rice planting was similar. The findings are arranged by descending order of input value: insecticides, herbicides, fungicides and others. As predicted by CCM, in those three districts, in 2012, the total market value of herbicide products was USD88 million (RMB540 million) for the rice planting-including early season rice, mid-season rice and late season rice. Among the three districts, Hengyang's market value of herbicide products was the highest, reaching USD42 million (RM260 million).

In terms of herbicide categories used, out of 900 farmers interviewed in those three districts, 813 mentioned 19 kinds of herbicides. Among them, glyphosate and paraquat were most frequently mentioned, far ahead of other herbicides, accounting for about 30% and 15% respectively. It's noteworthy that in Yueyang, many interviewees, 34.1%, had no awareness of the kind of herbicides they were using, compared with Hengyang's 3.3% and Changde's 9.1%.

As for brands, over half of farmers (about 64%) in Hunan Province had no awareness of them. According to the herbicide brand survey from 510 farmers, 22 herbicides brands and four pesticides companies were mentioned. However, those mentioned brands are almost all from multinationals: 49.3% was Monsanto's Roundup (glyphosate formulation), 28.9% was Dow AgroSciences' Daojie (penoxsulam formualtion) and 5.6% was Dow AgroSciences' Daoxi (cyhalofop-butyl•penoxsulam formulation).

Retail stores of agricultural products are the main pesticides purchase channels in these three districts. Farmers usually buy pesticides by experience, and rarely accept recommendations from merchants, friends and governments.

Rice is one of the most important crops in China, and Hunan Province is a large rice producing province, with a planting area of more than four million hectares. It ranked first in rice-sowing area and rice output in China in the past few years. Changde, Yueyang and Hengyang are the three important rice planting cities in Hunan Province. According to CCM's survey, about 50% farmers plant rice twice annually (early season rice and late season rice) and about 40% farmers choose single mid-season rice annually.

The news above was sourced from CCM’s latest issue, Herbicide China News 1305.

Failed to develop lithium iron phosphate in succession

As China's two well-known phosphorus companies -Jiangsu Chengxing Phoshorus-Chemcials Co., Ltd. (Jiangsu Chengxing) and Liuguo Chemical Industry Co., Ltd. (Liuguo Chemical) failed to develop lithium iron phosphate in succession, competitors should be cautious about choosing their business for expansion.

On Nov. 11th, Jiangsu Chengxing, known as China's top phosphate chemical producer, announced that it plans to withdraw capital from its holding subsidiary — Jiangyin Tiancheng New Energy Technology Co., Ltd. (Tiancheng New Energy), amounting to USD2.97 million investment. Jiangsu Chengxing's move is mainly affected by mediocre development of lithium iron phosphate since the establishment of Tiancheng New Energy.

With a registered capital of USD10.62 million, Tiancheng New Energy was formed by Jiangsu Chengxing in April 2010. Thereinto, Jiangsu Chengxing accounts for 28% stakes. In accordance with the initial scheme, Tiancheng New Energy should get into the mass production of lithium iron phosphate.

In addition to Jiangsu Chengxing, Liuguo Chemical, as a listed company specializing in producing phosphate fertilizers (DAP, MAP and types of compound fertilizers), also takes a hit in extension of lithium iron phosphate.

On June 18th, 2010, Liuguo Chemical and Sichuan University signed a two-year technical service contract. According to the contract, Sichuan University should develop production technology of lithium iron phosphate to achieve mass production. However, the target of mass production was not realized till expiration of contract. Nonetheless, Liuguo Chemical expressed that they would not give up the development of lithium iron phosphate. The cooperation with Sichuan University is still in progress, as noted by one insider from the company.

CCM Conducts Panel Data Research on Hunan Rice Planting

Aiming to establish key market indicators of China's rice industry, CCM has carried out a syndicated research project, namely Syndicated Research Project of Hunan Rice Panel Data & Analysis Model, on rice production in Hunan Province, one of the largest rice production provinces in China, by conducting panel data investigations around the basic information which includes pesticides, seeds, fertilizers, diseases, pests and weeds, meteorology and agricultural produce.

Focused on Panel Data Theory, the project narrows to county or city level and targets all crop related projects, sorting out relationships between different market factors in crop market. In addition, this project is centered by crop data, farmers’ habits and behavior of using fertilizers, pesticides, seeds and other products will be researched deeply.

What’s more, CCM will go further into the countryside and the local dealer for investigation and adopt unique interview methods to make survey into the real rice planting situation in Hunan province.

In fact, the panel data research covers three main rice-planting fields in Hunan Province — Hengyang, Changde and Yueyang, as well as rice planting area of different counties, brands and costs of seed, dosage, ratio, cost, pest and pest diseases control degree of pesticide/fertilizer in different growth stage of rice, pest and pest diseases occurrence in recent years, etc.

Through this project, readers can understand relevant crop planting information around each province/ city/ county by focusing on region and learn relevant crop planting information around nationwide / province / city/ county by focusing on certain crop.

With all the data and information refined from the results of the research, CCM will finally set up a multiple analysis model of the rice production dynamic in Hunan Province which can also be applied to any crop in any areas in China. Actually, the project is just one of the experimental field plans of China Agricultural Information Platform Project - a project of CCM's long-term planning.

CCM will keep conducting similar projects on main crops in different provinces in the future so as to build an overall China Agricultural Information Data Platform. Please keep focus on CCM.

Domestic MSG Industry Suffers A Lower Profit Level in 2011

Based on the 2011 annual report of Meihua Holdings Group Co., Ltd. (Meihua Group) and the Announcement of Annual Results for the Year Ended 31 Dec. 2011 of Fufeng Group Limited (Fufeng Group), top 2 monosodium glutamate (MSG) producers in China, as well as CCM International's latest report, Production and Market of Monosodium Glutamate (MSG) in China, published in Feb. 2012, it's found that China's MSG industry suffered a lower profit level in 2011 than 2010, majorly due to the significant increase in raw material cost, according to CCM International’s April issue of Corn Products China News.

In fact, the gross margins of Meihua Group and Fufeng Group both saw a decrease in 2011 over those in 2010, majorly caused by the poor performance of their MSG businesses. Specifically, the gross margin of Meihua Group's MSG and GA (glutamic acid) business declined to 22.8% in 2011 from 32.9% in 2010. And that of Fufeng Group's MSG segment including products of MSG, GA, fertilizers, threonine, corn oil, branched-chain amino acid, chicken powder, starch sweeteners, etc, also declined to 16.1% in 2011 from 22.7% in 2010. (TABLE)

As a matter of fact, the larger increase scale of raw material cost than that of MSG price is the key factor for MSG's lower profit level in 2011. In line with Fufeng Group, its average sales price of MSG only rose by 1% to USD1,250/t in 2011 over that in 2010 (FIGURE), while the average market price of MSG's key raw material, corn starch, grew by 16.5% to USD494/t in 2011 according to CCM International, resulting in the profit decline in its MSG business.

But actually, MSG's demand in 2011 performed well in accordance with CCM International's MSG report: its domestic apparent consumption volume enjoyed a 4.3% increase to over 2 million tonnes compared with that in 2010. In the mean time, its export volume also saw a 40.0% increase to about 290,000 tonnes. So it's believed that there were other reasons to explain the small increase scale of MSG price, such as Fufeng Group's low price strategy.

In accordance with Fufeng Group's claim, it intentionally adopted low price strategy in 2011, in order to accelerate the elimination of small and inferior MSG producers in order to further increase industry concentration and Fufeng Group's market share in the industry. As Fufeng Group is the largest MSG producer in China, together with its 30% market share in domestic MSG industry in 2011 as it claimed, Fufeng Group's low sales price restrained the overall average market price of MSG to head up. Therefore, small producers without cost advantage were driven to suspend or even stop production for the low profit. And in fact, through this low price strategy, MSG's sales volume in Fufeng Group enjoyed a 25% increase in 2011, amounting to 615,630 tonnes compared with that in 2010.

Fufeng Group believes that the company will enjoy absolute competitive advantages and maintain its leadership in domestic MSG market in the future, because the company's annual MSG production capacity will increase to 1 million t/a by Q2 2012. And the company plans to keep adopting the low price strategy in 2012, trying to further increase the company's market share.

All in all, it's believed that MSG's industry concentration will keep increasing, with market share focused in several leading producers, like Meihua Group and Fufeng Group. By then, MSG's profit will increase to a reasonable level and become relatively stable. Besides, governmental restriction can facilitate the progress. In view of MSG's high pollution and overcapacity situation, Chinese government has encouraged to increase the product's industry concentration through eliminating inferior capacity in 2010 and 2011. Actually, in 2010, about 234,000t/a of MSG capacity was eliminated by government, accounting for 8.2% of the total capacity all over the country. Moreover, according to the 2011 edition of Guideline Catalogue for Industrial Restructuring (the Guideline) published in April 2011 by the National Development and Reform Commission, MSG industry will maintain being restrained from 2011 to 2015.
