Survey founds glyphosate and paraquat were Hunan's major herbicides for early rice in 2012

Aiming to establish the key market indicators of China's rice industry, CCM has carried out a syndicated research project, namely Syndicated Research Project of Hunan Rice Panel Data & Analysis Model, on rice production in Hunan Province——one of the largest rice production provinces in China, by conducting panel data investigations around basic information which include pesticides, seeds, fertilizers, diseases, pests and weeds, meteorology and agricultural products. The survey of pesticide's application features has been conducted in Hengyang City (Hengyang), Yueyang City (Yueyang) and Changde City (Changde) of Hunan Province and a total of 900 farmers in these three regions were interviewed.

In those three districts, the demand for pesticides from early rice planting was similar. The findings are arranged by descending order of input value: insecticides, herbicides, fungicides and others. As predicted by CCM, in those three districts, in 2012, the total market value of herbicide products was USD88 million (RMB540 million) for the rice planting-including early season rice, mid-season rice and late season rice. Among the three districts, Hengyang's market value of herbicide products was the highest, reaching USD42 million (RM260 million).

In terms of herbicide categories used, out of 900 farmers interviewed in those three districts, 813 mentioned 19 kinds of herbicides. Among them, glyphosate and paraquat were most frequently mentioned, far ahead of other herbicides, accounting for about 30% and 15% respectively. It's noteworthy that in Yueyang, many interviewees, 34.1%, had no awareness of the kind of herbicides they were using, compared with Hengyang's 3.3% and Changde's 9.1%.

As for brands, over half of farmers (about 64%) in Hunan Province had no awareness of them. According to the herbicide brand survey from 510 farmers, 22 herbicides brands and four pesticides companies were mentioned. However, those mentioned brands are almost all from multinationals: 49.3% was Monsanto's Roundup (glyphosate formulation), 28.9% was Dow AgroSciences' Daojie (penoxsulam formualtion) and 5.6% was Dow AgroSciences' Daoxi (cyhalofop-butyl•penoxsulam formulation).

Retail stores of agricultural products are the main pesticides purchase channels in these three districts. Farmers usually buy pesticides by experience, and rarely accept recommendations from merchants, friends and governments.

Rice is one of the most important crops in China, and Hunan Province is a large rice producing province, with a planting area of more than four million hectares. It ranked first in rice-sowing area and rice output in China in the past few years. Changde, Yueyang and Hengyang are the three important rice planting cities in Hunan Province. According to CCM's survey, about 50% farmers plant rice twice annually (early season rice and late season rice) and about 40% farmers choose single mid-season rice annually.

First domestic company registers spirodiclofen technical

On 12 March, 2013, Shijiazhuang Xingbai Bio-engineering Co., Ltd. (Shijiazhuang Xingbai) secured the formal registration of 98% spirodiclofen technical (registration code: PD20130383) in China, the first registration of spirodiclofen technical acquired by a domestic enterprise, according to the ICAMA. With the new registration approved, Bayer CropScience AG (Bayer) is no longer the only registrant of spirodiclofen technical in China. It is believed that some other domestic companies will enter the spirodiclofen industry, acquiring more legal registrations of spirodiclofen technical and formulations, along with the approaching expiry date (1 Dec., 2013) of the spirodiclofen patent in China, according to Insecticides China News released by CCM in April.

Spirodiclofen, whose pesticidal mode of action is the inhibition of the lipid metabolism in pests and acarids, is one of the most effective acaricides to control citrus red spiders, at every level of its development from larva to adult. Since its introduction into China by Bayer in 2004, spirodiclofen has become the most popular products for controlling red spiders on citrus plantings in the domestic market, featuring environmental friendliness and long-lasting control effect.

As of 19 March, 2013, there were seven valid registrations of spirodiclofen in China, with five registrants. Of these, five registrations are for spirodiclofen formulations, mainly SC formulation. The only target of these five spirodiclofen formulation registrations is for the control of red spiders, with the application scale for crops including citrus, apple and cotton, according to the ICAMA.

With the legal technical registration, it is predicted that Shijiazhuang Xingbai will put spirodiclofen into production, although it has not revealed any details concerning its production project. Actually, there are three other domestic companies which intend to launch their production projects of spirodiclofen in the near future, as the patent of spirodiclofen in China obtained by Bayer will expire in Dec., 2013.

Lianyungang Niutaike Chemicals Co., Ltd. (Lianyungang Niutaike, a subsidiary controlled by Jiangsu Aolunda High-tech industry Co., Ltd.) plans to invest USD23.15 million in constructing a pesticide technology improvement project, aiming to construct pesticide production lines with a total capacity of 5,600t/a. The production project includes production lines of 500t/a spirodiclofen techincal and of 500t/a spirodiclofen formulations, according to the report released in Oct. 2012 by the Environmental Protection Bureau of Lianyugang City, Jiangshu Province. It is reported that Lianyungang Niutaike is on the process of applying for spirodiclofen technical registration and will launch the production in H2 2013.

Another enterprise willing to enter the spirodiclofen industry is Rudong Huasheng Chemical Co., Ltd. (Rudong Huasheng), whose application documents for its pesticide production expansion project was accepted in May 2012 by the Environmental Protection Bureau of Nantong City, Jiangshu Province. According to the application documents, Rudong Huasheng intends to produce spirodiclofen technical and 240g/L spirodiclofen SC, each with a capacity of 200t/a. But it didn't reveal the accurate time or other details concerning its production project.

Jiangsu Sword Agrochemicals Co., Ltd. (Jiangsu Sword) also wants to set foot in the spirodiclofen production. It has applied for environmental impact assessment for its several new pesticide production projects in Dec. 2012, including 100t/a spirodiclofen technical production.

There is no doubt, in the coming years, that new production projects and new registrations of spirodiclofen will draw  much attention in China. However, there are two obstacles to the development of spirodiclofen, namely counterfeits and intensified pest resistance. Due to the popular product recognition of spirodiclofen, counterfeits have been found in the domestic market in recent years, which will affect the legal market operation of spirodiclofen. Moreover, continuous use of counterfeits with very low content of spirodiclofen will increase pests' resistance to spirodiclofen. Therefore, mixture formulations with other insecticide ingredients will be developed in the future.

Shijiazhuang Xingbai, established in 2004, is a subsidiary of Hebei Xingbai Pharmaceutical Group. The main pesticide products of Shijiazhuang Xingbai include abamectin, ivermectin, emamectin benzoate, spinosad, etc. As one of the largest abamectin producers in China, its capacity for abamectin technical may have reached 600t/a in 2012.

CCM Conducts Panel Data Research on Hunan Rice Planting

Aiming to establish key market indicators of China's rice industry, CCM has carried out a syndicated research project, namely Syndicated Research Project of Hunan Rice Panel Data & Analysis Model, on rice production in Hunan Province, one of the largest rice production provinces in China, by conducting panel data investigations around the basic information which includes pesticides, seeds, fertilizers, diseases, pests and weeds, meteorology and agricultural produce.

Focused on Panel Data Theory, the project narrows to county or city level and targets all crop related projects, sorting out relationships between different market factors in crop market. In addition, this project is centered by crop data, farmers’ habits and behavior of using fertilizers, pesticides, seeds and other products will be researched deeply.

What’s more, CCM will go further into the countryside and the local dealer for investigation and adopt unique interview methods to make survey into the real rice planting situation in Hunan province.

In fact, the panel data research covers three main rice-planting fields in Hunan Province — Hengyang, Changde and Yueyang, as well as rice planting area of different counties, brands and costs of seed, dosage, ratio, cost, pest and pest diseases control degree of pesticide/fertilizer in different growth stage of rice, pest and pest diseases occurrence in recent years, etc.

Through this project, readers can understand relevant crop planting information around each province/ city/ county by focusing on region and learn relevant crop planting information around nationwide / province / city/ county by focusing on certain crop.

With all the data and information refined from the results of the research, CCM will finally set up a multiple analysis model of the rice production dynamic in Hunan Province which can also be applied to any crop in any areas in China. Actually, the project is just one of the experimental field plans of China Agricultural Information Platform Project - a project of CCM's long-term planning.

CCM will keep conducting similar projects on main crops in different provinces in the future so as to build an overall China Agricultural Information Data Platform. Please keep focus on CCM.
