China's Import Volume of Pesticides Increases in Q1 2012

China imported 16,000 tonnes of pesticides in the first quarter of 2012, up 8.1% over the same period of 2011. Meanwhile, the total import value of pesticides reached USD110 million, increasing by 22.1% year on year; the average price of imported pesticides was USD6,896/t in Q1 2012, according to the General Administration of Customs of the People's Republic of China (GAS), according to CCM’s May Issue of Fungicides China News.

Specifically, China's import volume of herbicides was the largest among all pesticides in Q1 2012, hitting 8,743 tonnes, accounting for 54.64% of the total volume of imported pesticides. Moreover, the YOY growth rate of herbicides' import volume in Q1 this year was 36.2%, much higher than those of other pesticide categories.

Meanwhile, the import volume of insecticides, the third largest imported pesticide category, increased by 16.5% year on year to 2,499 tonnes, and the average price of imported insecticides hit USD9,825/t.

China's import volume of fungicides ranked the second among all pesticide categories in Q1 2012, reaching 3,439 tonnes; the average price of imported fungicides was USD7,996/t, higher than that of other imported pesticides. However, the YOY growth rate of fungicides' import volume witnessed a slip of 5.0%.

In detail, Shanghai and Beijing are the top two cities by import volume of fungicides in the first quarter of this year, reaching 887 tonnes and 603 tonnes respectively. It is worth noting that these two cities' import volume of fungicides took up 43.3% of the total import volume of fungicides at the same time.

In terms of import origin, Germany, the US and France are the top three countries that exported fungicides to China, with export volumes of 679 tonnes, 587 tonnes and 399 tonnes respectively in Q1 2012. It is not hard to see from these figures mentioned above that fungicides' export volume of these three countries accounted for 48.4% of China's total import volume of fungicides in Q1 this year.

Besides, the average prices of imported fungicides from Germany, the US and France were USD6,423/t, USD7,477/t and USD9,815/t separately in the first quarter of 2012. Thereinto, the average price of fungicides from France was the highest among the three, USD1,819/t higher than that of imported fungicides from all import origins.

Fungicides with high efficiency, broad spectrum and low toxicity are still main import varieties by China in Q1 2012, such as tebuconazole, difenoconazole, azoxystrobin, pyraclostrobin, trifloxystrobin and propiconazole.

It can be estimated that China's import volume of pesticides from overseas market will continue to go up in the second quarter of 2012 with the coming of pesticides' peak consumption season. Meanwhile, pesticide industry's competition will be more and more intense in China in the near future because a large number of imported pesticides are entering domestic market.

Bayer Sets up Seed Treatment Application Center in China

Bayer CropScience (China) sets up its first Seed Treatment Application Center in China on 10 Nov., 2011 and it is the seventh one of Bayer CropScience in the world, based on CCM’s latest issue of Crop Protection China News.

The application center is located in Haidian District, Beijing City, with the most advanced seed processing equipment and detection measures. It is considered to be a bond between the R&D of new seed processing products, marketing and seed customers, including the services of customer support & training, tailored technical solutions, etc.

As seed treatment agent is one of the most important products in agricultural production, large international pesticide enterprises, such as Syngenta, Bayer and Dow AgroSciences, have got involved in the field since many years ago. The sales revenue of seed treatment in Bayer CropScience in 2010 reached about USD450.19 million, accounting for 8.9% of its total revenue, about USD5,048.95 million.

Eyeing the growing market of seed treatment agent in China, international crop protection giants have continuously entered China's market with high quality products, such as Bayer CropScience's Gaucho (70% imidacloprid), Sygenta's Dividend (difenoconazole) and Celest (fludioxonil).

Some self-developed products by Chinese enterprises have also shown good performance in domestic pesticide market in recent years, such as Yuezhong (60% imidacloprid) from Shenzhen Noposion Agrochemical Co., Ltd. and Fudie (70% imidacloprid) from Hebei Veyong Bio-Chemical Co., Ltd.

So far, there are more than 400 seed treatment agent players in China. The annual increment speed of the total sales volume has reached 10% in recent years, showing the great prospect of seed treatment agent in China.

According to CCM International, the total consumption volume of seed treatment agent in China reached 41,000 tonnes in 2009, valuing USD150 million.

Some insiders in China even predict that seed treatment agent, after herbicide, will account for large share of domestic pesticide market in the next three to five years.

However, problems still lie ahead of domestic seed treatment agent industry, even though it has witnessed rapid development in recent years, such as weak R&D capability, weak market surveillance, etc.

The R&D capability of seed treatment in China is largely lagged behind that of some developed countries due to the late start of domestic research. Although some large pesticide players have realized the prospect of seed treatment agent and put investment R&D in recent years, most of their products' quality don't come close to those of foreign products. As more and more sub-quality products appear in domestic market (there are some good quality products but without good usage instructions, while foreign enterprises do a good job in this terms), peasants prefer foreign seed treatment agent to domestic one.

Domestic market of seed treatment agent also faces the problem of lacking efficient market surveillance, which has led to many illegal productions and sales of seed treatment agent. Highly toxic seed treatment agents which can bring large profit still take up large market share in China.

However, compared with other branches of pesticide industry in China, the situation seems not so serious.

The registration fee of a compound seed treatment agent reaches USD78,740.16 (RMB500,000), which blocks the entering of small-sized pesticide players.

Zhejiang Heben Successfully Improves Synthetic Process of Difenoconazole

November Issue of Fungicides China News has been published by CCM recently, presenting that Zhejiang Heben Pesticide & Chemicals Co., Ltd. (Zhejiang Heben), one of the leading fungicide manufacturers in China, has successfully completed the innovation on synthetic process of difenoconazole.

Conventionally, difenoconazole is developed from 2,4-Dichloroacetophenone followed by etherification, bromination, ketal reaction and nucleophilic substitution, with an overall yield of about 70%.

However, Zhejiang Heben's new process of synthesizing difenoconazole has more advantages than the conventional method mentioned above. In detail, beginning with 3,4' -dichlorodiphenyl ether, difenoconazole is synthesized by acylation, condensation and cyclization, with a total yield of about 81%. What's more, the purity of difenoconazole can reach over 97%. Besides high yield and purity, this new method has other advantages, such as easy operation, short reaction time, little "three wastes", etc.

Zhejiang Heben constructed a 100t/a difenoconazole technical production line as early as 2007, thereafter the  company has gradually expanded its capacity to the current about 450t/a, says Mr. Li, Sales Manager of Zhejiang Heben. Moreover, most difenoconazole technical of Zhejiang Heben is exported to the overseas market.

Check the specific synthesis route of difenoconazole in CCM’s Fungicides China News 1111, together with major headline news below:

Zhejiang Heben Innovates Synthetic Process of Difenoconazole

Zhejiang Heben Pesticide & Chemicals Co., Ltd. (Zhejiang Heben), one of the leading fungicide manufacturers in China, has successfully completed the innovation on synthetic process of difenoconazole, and this project has been checked and accepted by the Science Technology Department of Zhejiang Province smoothly, according to CCM’s November Issue of Fungicides China News.

Difenoconazole, a triazole fungicide with high efficiency, low toxicity and broad spectrum, is widely applied to prevent and control various diseases, such as sheath blight, rust, early blight, powdery mildew, leaf spot, scab, etc., in the fields of wheat, rice, tomato, pepper, grape, citrus and so forth.

It is well known that Syngenta is the first company developing difenoconazole which is conventionally prepared from 2,4-Dichloroacetophenone followed by etherification, bromination, ketal reaction and nucleophilic substitution, with an overall yield of about 70%.

However, Zhejiang Heben's new process of synthesizing difenoconazole is relatively more advantageous than the conventional method mentioned above. In detail, beginning with 3,4' -dichlorodiphenyl ether, difenoconazole is synthesized by acylation, condensation and cyclization, with a total yield of about 81%. What's more, the purity of difenoconazole can reach over 97%.

Besides high yield and purity, this new method still has other advantages, such as easy operation, short reaction time, little "three wastes", etc., to improve the synthetic process of difenoconazole, according to Zhejiang Heben. The specific synthesis route of difenoconazole is as follows.

As description in the article on the study of new synthetic process of difenoconazole, the result shows that  isobutyl alcohol, a low-boiling solvent, is substituted for a high-boiling one--dimethylamide (DMF) in the condensation reaction and the former is easily recovered compared with the latter.

In cyclization reaction, replacing p-toluenesulfonic acid with the homemade composite catalyst can not only shorten the reaction time but also reduce the consumption of 1,2-Propanediol to a great extent; the yield of difenoconazole is risen by 5% accordingly when using homemade composite catalyst of Zhejiang Heben.

Last but not least, adopting composite solvent crystallization technique achieves the breakthrough in crystallization problem in the purification process of difenoconazole, which can also greatly increase product content.

China's Consumption of Triazole Fungicides to Continue Growing

Triazole fungicides have been playing an increasingly important role in the disease control on various crops, ranking the first place by market value in all the categories of fungicides in China in 2010. In particular, the domestic consumption of triazole fungicides has increased by 10.5% in 2010 compared with that of the previous year, and will continue growing in the future, according to CCM’s October Issue of Fungicides China News.

As the largest fungicide category, triazole fungicides with broad spectrum and high efficiency have witnessed a rapid development in the world since triadimefon, the first striking representative of these fungicides, was successfully commercialized in the 1970s. Thereafter, other triazole fungicides such as triadimefon, tebuconazole, propiconazole, difenoconazole, epoxiconazole, etc., have been put on the market in succession.

Owing to the excellent chemical bedrock, abundant resources, strong imitating ability, China has played an important role in the global triazole fungicide industry. China's total capacity of triazole fungicides has exceeded 50,000t/a in 2010 with the capacity expansion and the launch of many new production lines in recent years.

Besides, China's total output of triazole fungicides by technical has exceeded 20,000 tonnes in 2010; thereinto, about 70% was exported to the oversea market. Thanks to their high average prices compared with that of most other fungicide categories, triazole fungicides have taken the first place by market value in all categories of fungicides in China, capturing around 20% of the total fungicide market value in 2010.

The total market value of triazole fungicides has grown to about USD409 million in 2010, up 7.1% and 31.5% compared to that in 2009 and 2008 respectively. The top three triazole fungicides by market value were tebuconazole, propiconazole and triadimefon in 2010.

It is estimated that both the output and domestic consumption of triazole fungicides will continue to see stable growth in the next few years with the enhanced promotion and extended control spectrum. What's more, some new triazole fungicides such as epoxiconazole which is the second largest variety of triazole fungicides in the global pesticide market are expected to witness high demand growth in China in the future.

However, there are still some unfavorable factors existing in China's triazole fungicide industry, such as the increasing disease resistance, the low industry concentration, the degradation of traditional triazole fungicides and so forth. Fortunately, China has attached more and more attention to the healthy development of the domestic pesticide industry especially from 2010 when the Pesticide Industry Policy was formally issued by the Ministry of Industry and Information Technology (MIIT) of the People's Republic of China.

As reported in CCM International's Fungicides China News 1010, Chinese pesticide industry will be greatly concentrated in the future. Under the circumstances, the competitiveness of Chinese triazole fungicide industry will be enhanced accordingly with the improving industrial concentration.
