Potato seed treatment product has broad development prospects

However, at present, domestic seed treatment products are mainly registered for only a few crops, such as corn, wheat, soybean and rice. The number of seed treatment products registered for potato, the fourth largest food crop in China, is very small. With farmers' increasing knowledge of potato seed treatment and the improvement of potato seed treatment equipment, the market for potato seed treatment products has great development potential.

At present, the number of domestic potato seed treatments is too few to meet needs of the market. As of 18 Dec. 2013, there are three companies obtaining the registrations for potato seed treatment products in China, including Syngenta, Bayer and Gansu Huashi Agricultural Technology Co., Ltd.

Moreover, there are only six potato treatment products that have been registered, including two fludioxonil products (25g/L FS), one metalaxyl product (25% FS), two thiamethoxam products (70% ZF) and one imidacloprid product (600g/L FS). These products are used to control black scurf disease (caused by rhizoctonia solani), late blight disease, aphids and grubs.

After years of development, more companies have paid attention to the domestic potato seed treatment market. Therefore, there are some domestic experts predicting that the application of potato seed treatment products will enter a new stage in the next five years and this will promote the rapid and steady development of the potato industry.

China's potato planting area and fresh potato output are the biggest in the world. China's 2012 potato planting area is more than 5.20 million ha. while China's annual fresh potato output is more than 81.54 million tonnes. Inner Mongolia, Guizhou, Gansu, Sichuan, Yunnan, Chongqing and Heilongjiang are the major potato producing areas in China, and the total planting area of these seven regions accounts for more than 70% of China's potato planting area.

The number of potato diseases is more than one hundred, and there are mainly 15 kinds of common potato diseases in China, including late blight, wart disease, scab, early blight, ring rot, bacterial wilt, blackleg, viral disease, bacterial soft rot, dry rot, verticillium wilt, black scurf etc. The late blight, ring rot and viral disease are known as the three major diseases. The main pests to potato are ladybugs, tuber moths, aphids and underground pests such as grubs, mole crickets and cutworms.

Fipronil Detected Using on Vegetables

Fipronil, a kind of phenylpyrazole insecticide, was traced on the vegetables in a vegetable market in Huizhou City, Guangdong Province, in early June of 2012. As China has banned the sales and application of it since Oct. 2009 except for overseas sales, hygienic application and application as seed treatment on some crops, the news suddenly attracted the public in China who are very alert to such kind of food safety event in recent years, based on CCM International’s latest issue of Crop Protection China News.

However, different from other banned pesticide products used on agricultural produces which were exposed by media, many insiders in China took an attitude of being inured towards the illegal use of fipronil, and illegally adding fipronil into insecticide products as recessive composition is an open secret in domestic pesticide market. It is believed that this phenomenon may be caused by the incomplete ban on fipronil in China.

As a highly efficient insecticide, fipronil owns an excellent control effect against a wide range of pests on a variety of crops, especially the pests on rice like rice brown plant hopper. However, owing to its high toxicity to aquatic organisms and bees and long-lasting residue in soil and water, the Chinese government planned to ban the use of fipronil to protect the environment.

On 25 Feb., 2009, China's Ministry of Agriculture, Ministry of Industry and Information Technology and Ministry of Environmental Protection jointly released a notice to stop the approval of registration and production applications of formulations containing fipronil and to ban the production of related formulations from 1 April, 2009. The use and sales of pesticide formulations containing fipronil were banned from 1 Oct., 2009.

However, eyeing the good capacity of fipronil in managing cockroach and soil insects, the Chinese government didn't cancel the registration of fipronil formulation applied for sanitary pests and seed treatment. Besides, the production of fipronil TC for export and as the raw material of fipronil formulations for export were also not banned.

Therefore, there are still many companies that got registration of fipronil in China. According to the information from China Pesticide Information Network, up to 4 June, 2012, 59 kinds of fipronil products from 25 pesticide enterprises in China got production registration, including TC, SE, seed treatment agent, sanitary insecticide, etc.

As the production and use of fipronil as sanitary insecticide and seed treatment agent are allowed, it is difficult to ensure that all the pesticide enterprises, dealers and peasants in China will completely obey the banning law. As there is still no high-efficiency product in China to replace fipronil in managing flea beetle and thrips on vegetables, the complete ban on the use of fipronil in vegetable planting areas, especially in southern part of China, is still a very tough problem. Moreover, the regular insecticides from large pesticide enterprises are now facing an increasing insecticide resistance of vegetable insects, adding fipronil as recessive composition in regular insecticides becomes very popular in these areas.

Actually, fipronil is also illegally used in rice planting areas in China. Although some high efficient and low toxicity products have been developed and introduced to China, such as chlorantraniliprole and ethiprole, the higher profit of selling fipronil allows it to be illegally and frequently used in many rice planting areas in China.

Bayer Sets up Seed Treatment Application Center in China

Bayer CropScience (China) sets up its first Seed Treatment Application Center in China on 10 Nov., 2011 and it is the seventh one of Bayer CropScience in the world, based on CCM’s latest issue of Crop Protection China News.

The application center is located in Haidian District, Beijing City, with the most advanced seed processing equipment and detection measures. It is considered to be a bond between the R&D of new seed processing products, marketing and seed customers, including the services of customer support & training, tailored technical solutions, etc.

As seed treatment agent is one of the most important products in agricultural production, large international pesticide enterprises, such as Syngenta, Bayer and Dow AgroSciences, have got involved in the field since many years ago. The sales revenue of seed treatment in Bayer CropScience in 2010 reached about USD450.19 million, accounting for 8.9% of its total revenue, about USD5,048.95 million.

Eyeing the growing market of seed treatment agent in China, international crop protection giants have continuously entered China's market with high quality products, such as Bayer CropScience's Gaucho (70% imidacloprid), Sygenta's Dividend (difenoconazole) and Celest (fludioxonil).

Some self-developed products by Chinese enterprises have also shown good performance in domestic pesticide market in recent years, such as Yuezhong (60% imidacloprid) from Shenzhen Noposion Agrochemical Co., Ltd. and Fudie (70% imidacloprid) from Hebei Veyong Bio-Chemical Co., Ltd.

So far, there are more than 400 seed treatment agent players in China. The annual increment speed of the total sales volume has reached 10% in recent years, showing the great prospect of seed treatment agent in China.

According to CCM International, the total consumption volume of seed treatment agent in China reached 41,000 tonnes in 2009, valuing USD150 million.

Some insiders in China even predict that seed treatment agent, after herbicide, will account for large share of domestic pesticide market in the next three to five years.

However, problems still lie ahead of domestic seed treatment agent industry, even though it has witnessed rapid development in recent years, such as weak R&D capability, weak market surveillance, etc.

The R&D capability of seed treatment in China is largely lagged behind that of some developed countries due to the late start of domestic research. Although some large pesticide players have realized the prospect of seed treatment agent and put investment R&D in recent years, most of their products' quality don't come close to those of foreign products. As more and more sub-quality products appear in domestic market (there are some good quality products but without good usage instructions, while foreign enterprises do a good job in this terms), peasants prefer foreign seed treatment agent to domestic one.

Domestic market of seed treatment agent also faces the problem of lacking efficient market surveillance, which has led to many illegal productions and sales of seed treatment agent. Highly toxic seed treatment agents which can bring large profit still take up large market share in China.

However, compared with other branches of pesticide industry in China, the situation seems not so serious.

The registration fee of a compound seed treatment agent reaches USD78,740.16 (RMB500,000), which blocks the entering of small-sized pesticide players.

Vegetable Seed Treatment to Develop Quickly in the Future

As the largest production country of vegetable seed in the world, China has a huge vegetable seed market. Although China's vegetable seed industry has witnessed huge development in the past years, the development of vegetable seed treatment is slow in China. The treated vegetable seed accounts for less than 10% of the total vegetable seed consumption in China.

However, it is expected that vegetable seed treatment will develop quickly in the future, which can bring many business opportunities to Chinese vegetable seed treatment industry. The driving factors include the follows:
(1) Supply increase of improved vegetable seeds
(2) Development of new seed treatment method;
(3) Breakout of soil-borne diseases;
(4) Development of mechanical sowing and industrial seedling;
(5) Industry integration of vegetable seed companies.

And currently domestic vegetable seed treatment market has the following features:
- The seed treatment rate of vegetable seed is very low at present and the major method applied by domestic seed companies is film-coating. Pelleting and encrusting are in the promotion stage and both of them are seldom used.
- Seed treatment rate of imported vegetable seed is much higher than that of domestic vegetable seed. Most of the imported vegetable seeds are film-coated before they are imported.
- Some domestic seed companies exaggerate the function of seed treatment. Film-coated seeds are thought to be high-grade seeds by farmers. However, advantages of vegetable seed treatment are not fully recognized. Some farmers still soak the film-coated seed before sowing.
- Some domestic film-coating agents only beautify the seed without any practical functionality, as exposed by some insiders. The poor quality of domestic-made film-coating agents impacts on the germination percentage of vegetable seed.

All findings are from CCM’s first edition report of Seed Treatment for Vegetable Seed in China published in November, 2011. If you are interested in this report, please feel free to contact us at econtact@cnchemicals.com.

Huge Vegetable Seed Market in China

A report, entitled Seed Treatment for Vegetable Seed in China by CCM International, indicates that there is huge vegetable seed market in China to attract many overseas investors.

At present, China is the largest vegetable producer in the world. Vegetable planting areas in China increased to 18.70 million ha. in 2010 , up 1.55% compared with that of the last year. And greenhouse vegetable in China has witnessed impressive development in the past decades. The greenhouse vegetable planted areas in China hits 4.50 million ha. in 2010. China is also the biggest greenhouse vegetable producer in the world.

China has become the biggest vegetable seed market in the world, because of the large vegetable planting areas. The market value of vegetable seed ranks No.2 among all domestic seed industries. China consumes over 40,000 tonnes of vegetable seed every year, valued from USD1.58 billion to USD1.90 billion at present.

The huge vegetable seed market attracts many overseas investors. At present, there are over 70 overseas seed companies in China, most of whom are engaged in vegetable seed business. Different from domestic companies, overseas vegetable seed companies have strong R&D capabilities. Therefore, they have introduced plenty of high-quality vegetable varieties into China, successfully capturing most of the market share in major vegetable production regions.
