Qixiang Tengda to raise USD316 million to produce PBS

On Sep. 25, 2012, Zibo Qixiang Tengda Chemical Co., Ltd. (Qixiang Tengda) publishes a notice that it plans to raise USD316 million (RMB2 billion) by non-public offering shares to step into China's biodegradable industry. The company tries to invest USD618 million (RMB3.91 billion) to construct PBS (poly butylenes succinate) program with capacity of 150,000t/a, according to CCM International’s October issue of Biomaterials China News.

The company tries to offer no more than 120 million shares with price of no less than USD2.212 (RMB14) per share. At present, the company's holding company—Zibo Qixiang Petrochemical Industry Group Co., Ltd. (Qixiang Group) will input no less than USD15.8 million (RMB100 million). The company will satisfy the balance between the total investment and raised fund by self-financing.

Qixiang Tengda will divide the program into two phases, and construct a whole work flow of PBS including the raw material succinic acid (SA) and butanediol (BDO).

It will spend one year on the first phase. At first, Qixiang Tengda will make use of its abundant by-product—butane to produce maleic anhydride (MA) with capacity of 100,000t/a. MA can be used to produce SA and BDO. During the first phase, the production facilities of MA and BDO with capacity of 100,000t/a and 55,000t/a respectively should be completed.

It will spend one and a half years on the second phase to construct production facilities of MA, BDO and SA with capacity of 100,000t/a, 55,000t/a and 75,000t/a respectively. At last, it will construct the PBS facilities with capacity of 150,000t/a.

Qixiang Tengda is entirely optimistic about the prospects of PBS though its current market is not so good. It thinks that domestic potential demand for PBS can exceed 500,000 tonnes per year.

Qixiang Tengda thinks that PBS is the most excellent biodegradable materials in mechanical performance such as tensile strength, elongation at break, and toughness, and it also has an outstanding processing property. The biodegradable plastic industry has also been encouraged by the government. In H2 2007, PBS, PLA and PCL were listed in the 11th Five-Year Plan as products to be encouraged, and in the 12th Five-Year Plan, their position hasn't changed.

In fact, the current market of PBS is not so good, and its capacity of 150,000t/a may not be digested. Zhejiang Hangzhou Xinfu Pharmaceutical Co., Ltd. (Xinfu Pharmaceutical) is also a listed company that produces PBS for more than 6 years with capacity of 13,000t/a. However, according to the 2012 semiannual report of Xinfu Pharmaceutical, the sale volume of this company’s PBS is less than 1,000 tonnes (Please refer to Biomaterial China News 1209, Xinfu Pharmaceutical remains cautious with PBS business). Besides, Xinfu Pharmaceutical has operated overseas market for a long period, and its understanding of the PBS market may be better than Qixiang Tengda. Mr. Liu, Secretary of the Board of Qixiang Tengda, said that compared to Xinfu Pharmaceutical, they don't have any special measures to expand market, so it may be a difficult task to make a breakthrough in sales volume.

Even though, Mr. Liu still insists that the future of PBS is good, as Qixiang Tengda owns the whole processing chain, and the cost may be smaller than that of other producers. On the other hand, more countries start to care about the environment, which will promote the growth of the industry.

It's no doubt that PBS is a promising industry, but all commercial production should be led by consume market. As the growth of the new market is slow, it is estimated that Qixiang Tengda will have a tough road to expand its market after it finishes the construction.

USD72.6 Billion, Output Value Expectation of China's Fermentation Industry by 2015

"The output value of China's fermentation industry is expected to reach USD72.6 billion by 2015," said Mr. Du, Vice Chairman/Secretary-General of China Biotech Fermentation Industry Association (CBFIA), at a meeting held by CBFIA on 8-9 Dec. 2011 in Beijing City about China's biotech fermentation and relevant industry. He also disclosed some other goals and expectations in detail, as well as the development direction of China's fermentation industry in the next four years, according to CCM International’s January issue of Corn Products China News.

Normally, fermentation industry includes amino acids, starch sugar, polyalcohol, organic acids, enzymic preparations, yeast and other fermentation products with special functions, like isomalto-oligosaccharide, most of which have enjoyed better development in 2011 over 2010, and the total output of some key fermentation products rose by 12.5% during the first eight months of 2011 over the same period of 2010. In the mean time, the total export volume of key fermentation products increased by 21% to 1.83 million tonnes with their export value amounting to USD2.1 billion, up 24% year on year. Specifically, export volumes of enzymic preparations, starch sugar and glutamic acid witnessed an incredible increase, while those of lactic acid and yeast rose stably, but lysine's and polyalcohol's suffered a decrease due to their booming domestic demand.

More importantly, it's predicted that China's fermentation industry will still enjoy great prospect in the next four years: the average annual growth rate of its output can reach 15% from 2012 to 2015, which will amount to 30 million tonnes by 2015; the output value is expected to be USD72.6 billion. However, China won't be only obsessed with pell-mell development. Instead, it wants the industry to develop healthily and scientifically. So Mr. Du pointed out some development directions of the fermentation industry in the next four years.

Firstly, fermentation products with high added value and promising prospect will be encouraged to develop preferentially. In light of Mr. Du, the proportion of the outputs of polyalcohol, enzymic preparations, pharmaceutical amino acids and starch sugar in total fermentation products' output should rise to over 70% by 2015 from 60% in 2011. In contrast, the proportion of monosodium glutamate and citric acid should decline to below 18% by 2015 from 24% in 2010.

Secondly, the industry concentration should increase, and leading enterprises will be supported to develop further: the number of leading enterprises with annual revenue over USD1.6 billion and over USD0.8 billion should reach more than 5 and 10 respectively by 2015.

Thirdly, non-grain raw materials, like cassava, will be paid much attention to develop. In accordance with Mr. Du, the proportion of non-grain raw materials' consumption volume in total raw materials' should rise to about 15% by 2015 from 5% in 2010. It's well known that the major raw material in fermentation industry in China is corn, which has witnessed an insufficient supply situation in recent two years, resulting in its continuous price increase. In view of Chinese government's advice, industrial production should not compete against people for food. And Chinese government will try its best to reduce the 28.9% proportion of corn consumption in deep-processing industry in the product's total consumption in 2010 to 25.7% in 2012, by dint of restricting the development of corn deep-processing industry. According to the Guidance about Promoting the Healthy Development of Corn Deep-processing Industry (the Guidance) published in 2007, the proportion of corn consumption in deep-processing industry in its total consumption shall be less than 26%.

Fourthly, fermentation technology should be improved in order to increase the utilization rate of raw materials, reduce the consumption of water and energy as well as pollution. In detail, CBFIA's expected goal is that the consumption of water and energy can decrease by 30% and 18% separately by 2015 compared with that in 2011.

Overall, China is a big production country in fermentation industry currently, but not a great-power one. And there is still a long way to go for domestic fermentation industry to become strong and mature.

Zhejiang Hisun to Expand PLA Capacity in 2013

The First Issue of Biomaterials China News by CCM International reveals that Zhejiang Hisun Biomaterials Co., Ltd. (Zhejiang Hisun) will expand its Polylactic acid (PLA) capacity to 50,000t/a in 2013 from 5,000t/a currently.

Thanks to the bright future of biodegradable plastic, as the first PLA producer in China, Zhejiang Hisun is trying its best to expand its PLA capacity. The expansion is based on the fact that Zhejiang Hisun's sales keeps increasing these few years, revealed by the staff of Zhejiang Hisun. Currently, the company is preparing for the documents of PLA production expansion construction.

Moreover, the company is considering to use cassava, a new raw material instead of corn, for its industrial production. Compared with Zhejiang Hisun, the traditional PLA manufacturers in China mainly use corn as the raw material in the PLA industrial production. The change of the process is not only in line with the Chinese government's advice that the industrial production should not compete for food with people, but also reduce the cost effectively. In November 2011, price of cassava is only USD78/t compared with USD354/t of corn price.

Recently, the staff are proud that PLA stays in the edge in the biodegradable competition thanks to its wide range of the processing. PLA can be applied for the injection molding, blown film, extrusion, plastic, non-woven and other processing. He reveals that price of PLA will decrease a lot when the new production line finishes the construction. The current average price is around USD3,450t/a in China.

Zhejiang Hisun plans to expand PLA capacity thanks to its good performance of stiffness, elasticity and other mechanical properties. According to the experts from National resin network, PLA has been seen as an excellent alternative of polyethylene terephthalate (PET). The PLA demand will be expected to continue to grow as its advantage of production technology and continuous improvement of performance.

According to the survey from a research report of PLA, it is estimated that the compound annual growth rate (CAGR) of global lactic acid and PLA market will reach 18.7%, and the market value of PLA is expected to reach USD3.831 billion in 2016, thanks to its biodegradable and good performance, which can effectively reduce the dependence on oil raw materials.

Promising Future of China’s Biomaterials Industry

Biomaterials refer to those use renewable materials as raw materials, which are mainly divided into 4 types: natural bio-based materials, microbial synthetic materials, chemical synthesis of bio-based materials and bio-nylon. Biomaterials have enjoyed fast development in China in recent years. And it is estimated that China’s biomaterials market will have a promising future.

Some kinds of biomaterials have achieved great process, and even have been industrialized by now, such as Poly (lactic acid) (PLA), Polyhydroxyalkanoate (PHA) and Poly (butanediol succinate) (PBS). Many domestic processors make efforts to expand capacity.

Take PLA for example, total production capacity of China’s PLA has reached 19,100t/a in April 2011, and it is estimated to reach 46,556t/a in 2015, with CAGR of 38.91%. With the release of Plastic Shopping Bags National Mandatory Standards in May 2008, Chinese government reduces the production, sales and use of plastic shopping bags, which provides more development opportunities for PLA.

Besides, domestic processors aim to exploit new market. A primary example is Anqing Hexing, also a leading PBS processor, has succeeded in getting a National High Technology Research and Development Programme (863 Programme) in September 2011, aiming to optimize the fermentation process of succinic acid and develop the PBS efficient polymerization process and materials processing technology by 2014. If Anqing Hexing succeeds, the company will expand its business not only in China but also in overseas markets easily.

In conclusion, China’s biomaterials market will have a promising future, and its focus on the country’s biomaterials industry is a good way for Chinese and multinational processors to cooperate or compete with each other!

All findings are extracted from the flyer of CCM International’s Biomaterials China News. You might find more details about other biomaterials. If you are interested in CCM International’s Biomaterials China News, please feel free to contact us at econtact@cnchemicals.com.
