Raw material restricting scale economic benefits from industrialization of bio-based materials

In China, starch sugar is the main and almost the only raw material for the production of bio-based materials. When the price of starch sugar maintains a high level for a long time, producing bio-based materials with cheap and abundant straw becomes a potential choice. In terms of the purchasing and storage of straw, its economic benefits are not optimistic. Therefore, using straw instead of starch sugar as raw material would still restrict the scale economic benefits generated from the industrialization of bio-based materials, according to Bio-based  Materials China News 1410 on October by CCM.
Raw material is a significant part of production. Starch sugar is the raw material for many bio-based materials, such as PHA, PBS and PLA. The high price of starch sugar is one of the main reasons for the constant high cost of industrialization of producing bio-based materials through fermentation. As the production capacity of some bio-based materials expands and the release of production capacity maintains in China, the problem of high cost would become severer and severer. Specifically, Zhejiang Hisun Group Co., Ltd. launched a project in Oct. 2014 to expand the production capacity by 10,000 t/a; Guangzhou Kingfa Sci & Tech Co., Ltd. gradually increased its PBS production capacity from 120,000 t/a which was established in 2011 and 2012 (progressively to 200,000 t/a in 2015 as planned); Nanyang Zhongju Tianguan Low Carbon Technology Co., Ltd. expanded its production capacity of polypropylene carbonate (PPC) to 100,000 t/a in June 2014.
Using high-priced starch sugar as raw material in the large-scale production of bio-based materials can not effectively reduce the cost of bio-based materials. Therefore, substituting the high-priced starch sugar with low-priced straw is a new choice for bio-based material manufacturers. As the technology of producing bio-based monomer or bio-based materials with biomass like straw improves (for example, producing bio-based ethyl alcohol and lactic acid through the fermentation of straw), bio-based material manufacturers are competing to exploit straw. Besides, severe weather like haze happens frequently. So the government strictly forbids burning straw. In this way, using straw as the raw material for bio-based materials may usher into an unprecedented development.
In fact, using straw as raw material for bio-based materials may restrict the scale economic benefits generated from the industrialization of bio-based materials. The lightweight straw occupies a large area and costs a lot for transportation. These features hinder the recycling, purchasing and storage of straw. Statistics has it that the annual output of straw in China exceeds 600 million tonnes, but the straw is distributed in dispersed areas, covering eight areas such as Northeast China and the middle and low reaches of Yangtze River. What's more, in recent years, it was more difficult to recycle straw due to the insufficient labor force in rural areas (a lot of farmers take jobs in the cities), which brought about high recycling costs to enterprises. Hence, low economic benefits can be gained from using straw as raw material for bio-based materials. Besides, domestic enterprises can hardly make technological breakthroughs in the production of bio-based monomer and bio-based materials with the fermentation of straw. It seems that it is not the right time for straw to develop as raw material for bio-based materials.
With the high price of starch sugar, low economic benefits of straw and stagnant technology of raw material transformation, at present, the scale economic benefits generated from the industrialization of bio-based materials in China is still restricted by the raw materials

3D printing industry enters stage of rapid development

In the past two years, 3D printing industry has entered a stage of rapid development along with the popularity of desktop 3D printer. Many companies have made great breakthrough in this industry, using polylactic acid (PLA, the most widely used biodegradable material) as one main material, according to Biomaterial China News issued by CCM in August.

On June 20, 2013, Stratasys, an international giant in 3D printing industry, has just declared to purchase another famous 3D printer producer, Makerbot, to develop its low-end products market that uses PLA as the main raw material. On Jan. 3, 2013, another 3D printing giant 3D Systems announced that it has agreed to purchase Geomagic, the world's leading provider of 3D software for creating digital models, to further expand its current product lineup that also uses PLA as the main raw material.

PLA, one of the two raw materials (the other is ABS, acrylonitrile-butadiene-styrene) for desktop 3D printers, can be applied in various fields. As a green biodegradable material, the PLA printing-supplies in 3D printing industry have been tested by major European and US certification institutions, proving that they are safe, environmentally friendly and have good mechanical property, and generally, the PLA 3D printing technology can be widely applied in toys, home products, electronics, automobiles, medical treatment and other fields.

The developed countries in the world have made great achievements in the application of 3D printing. In the US, the biodegradable plastic produced by 3D printers has been widely applied in various fields, especially in the children's toys field where the 3D printing technology is already very mature. In the high-end products market, the world's first car to have its body mostly 3D printed (Urbee 2) was completed in Feb. 2013 by the US-based Kor Ecologic Inc., and this car is safe and considered to be the greenest practical car ever made on earth. These achievements may stimulate the market demand for biological materials along with the rapid development of 3D printing industry. According to the statistics from Wohlers Associates, a 27-year-old independent consulting firm focusing on 3D printing industry research, the global sales of 3D printing products (including printing-supplies) reached about USD2.20 billion in 2012, up about 29% compared with USD1.71 billion in 2011. Besides, it also estimated that the global market size of 3D printing will reach USD5 billion in 2017, and even hit USD10.8 billion in 2021.

In China, some domestic enterprises have also made some achievements in 3D printing in recent years. In June 2013, Tianjin Visual Sensitive Technology Co., Ltd., a company engaged in 3D digital technology, achieved the mass production of 3D printers mostly using PLA as raw material. In Oct. 2012, Shenzhen BrightChina Industrial Co., Ltd. (BrightChina), a leading PLA producer in China, cooperated with Shenzhen Weistek Technology Co., Ltd. (Weistek) to develop 3D printing business through a capital increase and injecting PLA printing-supplies business into Weistek (Please refer to Biomaterial China News 1302, BrightChina cooperates with Weistek to develop 3D printing business for more details).

However, China's 3D printing industry is still at the early stage of development. Domestic 3D printing enterprises are small and scattered, and the equipment and printing-supplies (the quality of domestic PLA is not so good) greatly rely on the import, leading to the high production cost in domestic 3D printing industry. But Mr. Luo, Secretary-General of Chinese 3D Printing Industry Alliance, said that the Chinese market still has a great potential, since the Chinese government attaches great importance to the emerging 3D printing industry and people's demand for customized products in which the advantage of 3D printing technology lies becomes stronger. Mr. Luo estimated that the market size of 3D printers in China will expand to USD1.63 billion by 2016, overtaking the US as the world's largest 3D printing market.

Globally, governments are also increasing their supports for 3D printing industry in the past two years. In Feb. 2012, the US government declared that it listed 3D printing technology as one of the national 15 key technologies. In May 2013, the US government further invested USD200 million in the establishment of three institutes engaged in researching 3D printing technology, which provides a positive signal for the global 3D printing industry. In April 2012, China's Ministry of Science and Technology also promulgated the National High-tech R&D Program (863 Program), including 3D printing industry for the first time.

Although 3D printing industry has drawn so much attention, the limitation of printing-supplies remains a big problem for this industry. For example, the relatively high price and unstable quality of PLA limit its application scope.

However, 3D printing industry is still promising. The market price of PLA will decrease when industrial production is achieved and its quality will be improved and gradually become stable along with the development of production technology. Besides, the materials for 3D printing industry can be expanded from biological materials (PLA, etc.) to ceramics, metals, minerals, etc.

12th Five-Year Plan for Biological Industry Development published

On Jan. 6, 2013, the State Council of the People’s Republic of China issued the 12th Five-Year Plan for Biological Industry Development (the 12th Five-Year Plan), covering the biological industry’s seven sub-sectors—biological medicine, biological medical engineering, biological agriculture, biological manufacturing, biological energy, biological environmental protection and biological service sectors, according to Biomaterials China News 1301 issued on 8 January by CCM.

Specifically, the plan for the biological manufacturing sector is shown below.

Target:
1. To achieve the production of a batch of important biological products from non-grain feedstock;
2. To achieve a capacity of biological materials of 1 million t/a by 2015;
3. To achieve a capacity of biological products of 10 million t/a by 2015.

Content:
1. Industrial demonstration of non-grain industrial sugar: promoting the R&D and application of high quality, large-scale preparation technologies including the processing technology of biomass such as tuber crops, straw and corn, and enzymatic saccharification, constructing non-grain industrial sugar industrial demonstration lines, and forming the large-scale supply of non-grain fermentable sugar.

2. Industrial demonstration of biological chemicals: promoting the industrial application of microbe-engineered bacteria and thermochemical technologies, constructing large-scale production lines of biological chemicals such as alcohol, organic acid, biological olefin and its derivatives, and improving the competitiveness of biological chemicals compared to petroleum products.

3. Industrial demonstration of biological materials: promoting the development and application of biological materials’ biological and chemical polymerization technologies, constructing demonstration production lines of biological plastics and fibers, such as polylactic acid (PLA), poly butylene succinate (PBS) and polyhydroxyalkanoate (PHA), and promoting the application of biological materials.

Policy:
1. Establishing an authentication mechanism for biological products;
2. Introducing an incentive policy for the consumption of biological products;
3. Researching a system for rationing agricultural raw materials for the industrial sector.

Compared to the 11th Five-Year Plan for Biological Industry Development (2006–2010), the 12th Five-Year Plan reveals that the Chinese government attaches importance to the development of the whole industry, not just the technology, and it pays more attention to raw materials and consumption. The 11th Five-Year Plan for Biological Industry Development only included encouraging biological products and stated the government’s support for their large-scale production.

In the 12th Five-Year Plan, China pays more attention to raw materials of biological products, and specifically emphasizes the production of sugar from non-grain crops. In general, corn is the main raw material for most biological materials due to its excellent properties. However, too much corn has been consumed by industrial production in the last two years, which led to a significant increase in the corn price, so China is trying to limit corn consumption in the industrial sector. Researching a system for rationing agricultural raw materials for the industrial sector is a new initiative, which may help restrict corn consumption in processing industries and encourage the consumption of non-grain crops in the industrial sector at the same time. In the future, more cassava, straw and potato may be used as a feedstock of biological materials.

Meanwhile, the Chinese government is also focusing on the consumption of biological products and is attempting to encourage domestic consumers to use them. Although China is already a large producer in the biological industry, most biological products are exported to developed countries and the output is far smaller than the capacity due to limited domestic consumption.

Once an authentication mechanism has been established to judge whether a product is biodegradable and test its degree of degradation, producers will be able to set a reasonable price for different degrees of degradation, and it will also be easier for consumers to purchase real biological products. This mechanism will help consumers build confidence in this industry and protect the profit margin of those high degradation products.

The 12th Five-Year Plan reveals that the Chinese government is working on related policies that can help the biological industry become mature and maintain sustainable development.

PBS has been added to the list of encouraged biological materials in the 12th Five-Year Plan due to its biodegradable properties and comprehensive performance. Currently, there are five producers producing these products and there are another two new production lines under construction.

It is also worth noting that it is the first time that the Chinese government has listed biological service as an independent industry. The government plans to construct national biological resources and an information technology network service system and form an information service capability for the biological industry.
