Glory Biomaterial's first phase of biological PDO programme enters pilot production

In Jan. 2013, the 20,000t/a 1,3-propanediol (PDO) production line owned by Zhangjiagang Glory Biomaterial Co., Ltd. (Glory Biomaterial) entered pilot production, according to the latest report in Biomaterials China News issued by CCM in February.

The 20,000t/a PDO production line is just the first phase of the biological PDO programme of Glory Biomaterial. The biological PDO programme was started in Sept. 2011, with the planned capacity of 65,000t/a and a total investment of about USD24 million (RMB150 million). Glory Biomaterial was established specially for the biological PDO programme by Zhangjiagang Glory Chemical Industry Co., Ltd. (Glory Chemical) and Softbank China Venture Capital Ltd. (SBCVC). Glory Chemical is the domestic cooperative partner of DuPont to help DuPont produce its terephthalate (PTT) product—Sorona® with the capacity of 30,000t/a from 2006. PTT is a main downstream product of PDO and DuPont is a global leading PDO and PTT producer. SBCVC is a leading venture capital firm in Asia with headquarters in Singapore, and it invests in information technologies, health care, cleantech, new materials, retail, etc.

By cooperating with East China University of Science and Technology (ECUST), Glory Biomaterial has obtained its own invention patent after developing the production technology. According to its invention patent, PDO's extraction rate from fermentation broth can reach 92%. In general, most biological production engineering involves hydrolyzing the corn starch into glucose first and then processing glucose into PDO, while Glory Biomaterial's production technology is different, which uses glycerol as the raw material. With the development of biological diesel, a volume of glycerol is manufactured as a by-product, which has led to the decrease of glycerol prices. Therefore, the production cost of biological PDO from glycerol may be lower than that from corn starch. Meanwhile, glycerol is a non-food raw material.

The PDO programme may bring great benefit to the company.

A staff from Glory Chemical revealed that the contract between Glory Chemical and DuPont expired in April 2012, which means that Glory Chemical can produce and sell its own PDO and PTT products from May 2012. Mr. Han, General Manager of Glory Chemical, said that the company's development was seriously restricted when it cooperated with DuPont. In general, the company can produce 20,000 tonnes of PTT per year at a value of USD64 million, but the company's profit is only about USD1.6 million. Mr. Han estimated that once the whole programme is finished and the PDO plant and PTT plant are combined organically, the company's profit can potentially increase by more than ten-fold and reach approximately USD48 million.

In the 10th Five-Year Plan period (2001-2005), the PDO industry started to boom in China. In March 2002, Zouping Mingxing Chemical Co. Ltd. developed a chemical synthesis of PDO with a capacity of 6,500t/a. Subsequently, Anhui Lixing Chemical Co., Ltd., Fujian Shengda Biotechnology Co., Ltd., Chen Bio. Co. Ltd., Hunan Rivers Bioengineering Co., Ltd. and certain other enterprises all started to construct small-scale biological PDO production lines. Most of these biological producers have adopted the technology from Tsinghua University, which uses glycerol as the raw material. Currently, few of these producers' biological PDO businesses have been greatly developed. Shenhong Group, the domestic leading PTT producer with a capacity of 30,000t/a, says that it is also researching biological PDO and has achieved some results.

It is reported that China will become the largest producer and exporter of 1,3-PDO by 2019, since the growing markets of the Asia-Pacific region and low cost of raw material and labour may be attracting foreign PDO companies to enter China.

First domestic bio-PVA production line comes on stream

On Oct. 23, 2012, China's first bio-PVA program with capacity of 50,000t/a owned by Guangxi Guangwei Chemical Co., Ltd. (Guangwei Chemical) was officially put into production, according to CCM’s December issue of Biomaterials China News.

This program represents the capacity of 50,000t/a vinyl ethylene from bio-alcohol, 100,000t/a vinyl acetate (VAC) and 50,000t/a PVA.

The difference between this production line and domestic major PVA production lines is that Guangwei Chemical uses sugarcane or other biomasses as raw material while other producers use coal or nature gas. Guangwei Chemical is located in Guangxi Zhuang Autonomous Region where biomass is abundant, and it can make use of cheap biomass to produce alcohol through fermentation, then generating PVA from bio-alcohol.

While the mainstream production process in China is producing PVA from calcium carbide or acetylene.

This production line is designed by Professor Zhang Minhua and his R&D team from Tianjin University. According to Mr. Zhang, the change of feedstock can decrease PVA producers' dependence on coal and expand the distribution scope of PVA plants.

Now, PVA is mainly produced through ethylene method and acetylene method. Acetylene can be made from coal, while ethylene is mainly produced from natural gas. Restricted by resources and technology, China’s PVA is mainly produced from coal-made acetylene, since China is abundant in coal but short of petroleum and Chinese enterprises have not mastered the technology of ethylene method. So most PVA producers construct PVA plants in the coal-rich areas to cut production cost. For example, the parent company of Guangwei Chemical—Anhui Wanwei Updated High-tech Material Industry Co., Ltd. (Wanwei Updated High-tech)—has constructed a new plant in Inner Mongolia Autonomous Region because of local rich coal resources.

However, if PVA can be produced from biomass, the location of PVA plants will not be limited, since China's biomass resources are abundant, cheap and widely distributed. For example, China can generate more than 700 million tonnes of straw resources annually. Therefore, more regions are suitable for constructing PVA plants, such as Guangxi Zhuang Autonomous Region, a province short of coal but rich in biomass.

Besides renewable raw material, safety and energy-saving are also great advantages of biological method. Without producing calcium carbide (calcium carbide production is restricted by many countries and regions because it is energy-intensive), biological method can greatly reduce energy consumption and cut the production cost. Meanwhile, this method is safer. In 2009, an explosion accident occurred in Guangwei Chemical, forcing the company to draw a plan to develop biological PVA. Before the explosion accident, the company is a coal-based PVA producer. Mr. Zhang also introduced that there are other advantages of bio-PVA technology in addition to the above-mentioned ones, such as few by-products, high purity, low investment and small carbon dioxide emission.

Though the completion of domestic first bio-PVA production line is an encouraging event, the company may have to face the problem of marketing, and whether this production line can bring great benefit is also uncertain, since domestic PVA industry has already experienced serious overcapacity. For example, Wanwei Updated High-tech is domestic largest PVA producer with the capacity of 250,000t/a (including Guangwei Chemical's 50,000t/a). According to its Q3 2012 earnings report, the company suffered a net loss of USD12.4 million in Q3 2012, decreasing by about 431.68% compared with that in the same period of 2011.

For Guangwei Chemical, low cost and its special geographic location may be its strong advantages, as Guangxi adjoins the ASEAN Free Trade Area (AFTA).

Qixiang Tengda to raise USD316 million to produce PBS

On Sep. 25, 2012, Zibo Qixiang Tengda Chemical Co., Ltd. (Qixiang Tengda) publishes a notice that it plans to raise USD316 million (RMB2 billion) by non-public offering shares to step into China's biodegradable industry. The company tries to invest USD618 million (RMB3.91 billion) to construct PBS (poly butylenes succinate) program with capacity of 150,000t/a, according to CCM International’s October issue of Biomaterials China News.

The company tries to offer no more than 120 million shares with price of no less than USD2.212 (RMB14) per share. At present, the company's holding company—Zibo Qixiang Petrochemical Industry Group Co., Ltd. (Qixiang Group) will input no less than USD15.8 million (RMB100 million). The company will satisfy the balance between the total investment and raised fund by self-financing.

Qixiang Tengda will divide the program into two phases, and construct a whole work flow of PBS including the raw material succinic acid (SA) and butanediol (BDO).

It will spend one year on the first phase. At first, Qixiang Tengda will make use of its abundant by-product—butane to produce maleic anhydride (MA) with capacity of 100,000t/a. MA can be used to produce SA and BDO. During the first phase, the production facilities of MA and BDO with capacity of 100,000t/a and 55,000t/a respectively should be completed.

It will spend one and a half years on the second phase to construct production facilities of MA, BDO and SA with capacity of 100,000t/a, 55,000t/a and 75,000t/a respectively. At last, it will construct the PBS facilities with capacity of 150,000t/a.

Qixiang Tengda is entirely optimistic about the prospects of PBS though its current market is not so good. It thinks that domestic potential demand for PBS can exceed 500,000 tonnes per year.

Qixiang Tengda thinks that PBS is the most excellent biodegradable materials in mechanical performance such as tensile strength, elongation at break, and toughness, and it also has an outstanding processing property. The biodegradable plastic industry has also been encouraged by the government. In H2 2007, PBS, PLA and PCL were listed in the 11th Five-Year Plan as products to be encouraged, and in the 12th Five-Year Plan, their position hasn't changed.

In fact, the current market of PBS is not so good, and its capacity of 150,000t/a may not be digested. Zhejiang Hangzhou Xinfu Pharmaceutical Co., Ltd. (Xinfu Pharmaceutical) is also a listed company that produces PBS for more than 6 years with capacity of 13,000t/a. However, according to the 2012 semiannual report of Xinfu Pharmaceutical, the sale volume of this company’s PBS is less than 1,000 tonnes (Please refer to Biomaterial China News 1209, Xinfu Pharmaceutical remains cautious with PBS business). Besides, Xinfu Pharmaceutical has operated overseas market for a long period, and its understanding of the PBS market may be better than Qixiang Tengda. Mr. Liu, Secretary of the Board of Qixiang Tengda, said that compared to Xinfu Pharmaceutical, they don't have any special measures to expand market, so it may be a difficult task to make a breakthrough in sales volume.

Even though, Mr. Liu still insists that the future of PBS is good, as Qixiang Tengda owns the whole processing chain, and the cost may be smaller than that of other producers. On the other hand, more countries start to care about the environment, which will promote the growth of the industry.

It's no doubt that PBS is a promising industry, but all commercial production should be led by consume market. As the growth of the new market is slow, it is estimated that Qixiang Tengda will have a tough road to expand its market after it finishes the construction.
