Chinese Farmers Become More Rational on Pesticide Purchasing

CCM has launched the latest issue of Glyphsoate China Monthly Report, showing Chinese farmers are more rational in choosing products, and cost-performance ratios has become the first important factor to make purchasing decision.

Shenzhen Noposion Agrochemicals Co., Ltd. (Noposion), China's first listed pesticide formulation producer, found that their market share of glyphosate in China is shrinking. The reason is that prices of Noposion's glyphosate products are very high, but the actual efficiency is not significantly superior to other brands with medium price, according to CCM’s investigation.

The selling point of Noposion's glyphosate 41% IPA, which could turn blue when diluted by water used to attracted thousands of farmers in the past, although the price is much higher. However, many professionals and market insiders have pointed out that Noposion's "formulation color change" has no contribution to the glyphosate's actual weed control efficiency. And farmers also find that Noposion's glyphosate product has no significant superiority over others, but it costs more money. Therefore, the selling point of magic color change can't build up good reputation among farmers.

In fact, the pesticide purchasing habit of Chinese farmers has changed. They don’t highly depend on retailer's recommendation and product's famous brand any longer. They are more intellectual, and they choose product with best cost-performance ratios. With the increasing efficiency of domestic glyphosate product, more and more Chinese farmers choose domestic glyphosate product with low price and comparable performance rather than famous brands.

The following highlights are covered in Glyphsoate China Monthly Report 1109:
-Yangnong Chemical saw ugly performance in glyphosate business in H1 2011, due to the depressed glyphosate market and the lack of overseas channels.
-Zhejiang Wynca suffers from operating profit loss in H1 2011, reflecting the dreadful glyphosate market.
-Asia is expected to be the largest growth point of global glyphosate consumption, due to the increasing potential of approval of planting GMO food crops and the increasing ratio of chemical weeding in these developing countries.
-Cost-performance ratio becomes the key factor for Chinese farmers' purchasing decision.
-Porter's five forces model is applied in China's glyphosate technical industry.
-Yellow Phosphorus price skyrockets in September 2011 because of the heavy drought in Southwestern China and the increasing phosphorus ore price.
-Increasing glyphosate formulation export drives up MIPA demand in China.
-Application of CWAO technology in glyphosate waste water treatment is introduced.
-Glyphosate price slightly increases in Sept. 2011, driven by the raw material price and recovering overseas demand.
-Glyphosate export kept an uptrend in July 2011, driven by the recovering demand in American countries.

Where is China’s Pinene Industry Going?

CCM’s report of Production and Market of Alpha and Beta-Pinene in China has come out recently, indicating China’s pinene industry faces great challenges after 2010, as the supply of gum turpentine becomes more intense with increasing price.

As the main components of turpentine, alpha-pinene (α-pinene) and beta-pinene (β-pinene) are also important derivatives of turpentine; both of them are separated from turpentine.

Driven by increasing demand from domestic and overseas markets, the output of pinene keeps an uptrend in the past years. As of August 2011, the capacities of α-pinene and β-pinene amount to 122,900t/a and 54,550t/a respectively, with total output of 50,750 tonnes and 21.480 tonnes in 2010 respectively.

The price of alpha/beta-pinene fluctuated with the price change of gum turpentine in the past years. With the continuous growth of gum turpentine price, the prices of α-pinene and β-pinene have increased to the historical high level at the end of 2010. Generally speaking, the price of β-pinene is higher than that of α-pinene.

Since the price of alpha/beta-pinene is increasing, domestic pinene industry are facing great challenges. Where is China’s Pinene Industry Going? Will the price keep growing in the next few years? What are the market shares of the two kinds of pinene in 2010? What is the forecast on pinene consumption in the following 5~10 years?

You will discover all answers in CCM’s report of Production and Market of Alpha and Beta-Pinene. The report will show you detail information about pinene (α-pinene and β-pinene) industry, including production, output, capacity, price, manufacturers, consumption, forecast, etc.

The following aspects are covered in this report:
- Prices of α-pinene and β-pinene in the past and currently
- Supply situation of all pinene producers
- Introduction to major derivatives of α-pinene and β-pinene
- Raw material supply for α-pinene and β-pinene

Cost-performance Ratio Becomes Key Factor for Chinese Farmers' Purchasing Decision

Chinese farmers are more rational in choosing products, and cost-performance ratios has become the first important factor for making purchasing decision, according to CCM’s September issue of Glyphsoate China Monthly Report.

Recently, CCM International visited Shenzhen Noposion Agrochemicals Co., Ltd. (Noposion), China's first listed pesticide formulation producer, knowing that Noposion's glyphosate business has faced stalled growth and Noposion is puzzled by its marketing strategy. "We know glyphosate is the herbicide enjoying the largest consumption volume in China, but the market share of our glyphosate in China's market is very small and the sales volume witnessed stalled growth in recent two years. We wonder whether farmers' pesticide use habit and other factors impact on farmers' purchasing decision," non-selective herbicide product manager said.

After a comprehensive analysis and investigations from market insiders, CCM International has found that prices of Noposion's glyphosate products are very high, but the actual efficiency is not significantly superior to other brands with medium price.

Noposion has registered glyphosate 41% IPA and 68% glyphosate ammonia salt, and glyphosate 41% IPA is the main glyphosate product as China consumes the overwhelming proportion of liquid glyphosate formulations. One of the key selling points of Noposion's glyphosate 41% IPA is that "the formulation could turn blue when diluted by water." The similar "magic" of pesticide products have been attracted many farmers in the past, but, of course, prices of these "magic products" are much higher than others'.

Many professionals and market insiders have pointed out that Noposion's "formulation color change" has no contribution to the glyphosate's actual weed control efficiency. "The formulation has been added acidity indicator and some other chemicals. The acidity will be changed when the formulation is diluted and the acidity indicator changes the color of diluted formulation." Professionals have disclosed the general principle of magic color change.

At present, more and more Chinese farmers become more rational, and these "magic products" with higher price will not attract them any longer. When using it the first time, farmers find that Noposion's glyphosate product has no significant superiority over others, but it costs them more money. Therefore, the selling point of magic color change can't establish good reputation among farmers, but the high pricing of Noposion's glyphosate 41% IPA will become an factor impacting its market extension.

In fact, Chinese farmers pesticide purchasing decision doesn't highly depend on retailer's recommendation and product's famous brand any longer. They are more intellectual and choose product with best cost-performance ratios. With the increasing efficiency of domestic glyphosate product, more and more Chinese farmers choose domestic glyphosate product with lower price and comparable performance rather than famous brand Roundup. The decreased market share of Roundup and Noposion's stalled growth of high price glyphosate 41% IPA are good proofs.

China's Modified Starch Output Posts 17.4% Growth in 2010

According to China Starch Industry Association (CSIA), China's total output of modified starch reached about 1.24 million tonnes in 2010, realizing a 17.4% year-on-year growth thanks to brisk demand. At present, modified starch industry in China situates in a growing stage; it's believed that there's still plenty of room for its further development, according to CCM’s September issue of Corn Products China News.

According to CCM's report Future of Modified Starch in Asia Pacific published in Dec. 2010, China's total capacity of modified starch reached 1.68 million t/a in 2010. Over 30 producers own capacity of over 10,000t/a; among them, only two have the capacity beyond 100,000t/a: Zhucheng Xingmao Corn Developing Co., Ltd. (Zhucheng Xingmao) and Guangxi Mingyang Bio-chem Technology Co., Ltd. (Guangxi Mingyang). It's believed that paper industry and food industry are still the top two largest downstream markets of modified starch in China in 2010 and 2011, so the specifiations of modified starch applicable to be used in both industries are more popular in China than other kinds.

In fact, modified starch industry in China is still not fully developed yet, with a promising future laying ahead. According to CSIA, the per-capita consumption volume of modified starch in China was only 1 kg in 2010, while it averaged out at 1.2 kg all over the world, and that of the US reached 10 kg. Thus, the industry in China has great room for development.

In H1 2011, it's believed that the indsutry also performed well. According to Global Bio-chem Technology Group Company Limited (Global Bio-chem), one of the leading modified starch producers in China with capacity of 80,000t/a in 2011, its sales volume and gross profit of modified starch increased by 23% and 117% in H1 2011 over H1 2010. The increase in sales volume, as explained by the company, is the flourishing market of paper industry.

Besides, a national standard for modified food starch will be published in the future, which can promote the further fast development of modified food starch industry. This first specific national standard for modified food starch can regulate the production and guarantee the product quality. In March 2011, the draft of the standard was approval by a group of experts from Standardization Administration of China, CSIA, some leading producers and so on. Players in the industry are looking forward to the publication and taking effect.

For the further development of domestic modified starch industry, producers should pay much attention to develop proper varieties and expand product mix so as to enter a new market and cater to specific demand from customers. Large and strong global modified starch players have many advantages in the market competition for they are superior in R&D and technology innovation. It's believed that given domestic producers' strengthening of R&D capability, modified starch industry in China can develop better and faster in the future.
