China’s Corn Starch is of Great Competitiveness

China’s starch industry has developed fast in recent years with strong governmental support. Owing to overcapacity in starch industry, starch producers have been facing intense competition in last few years.

There are two kinds of starches, native starch and modified starch. Major varieties of native starch include corn starch, potato starch, cassava starch and wheat starch. Native starch industry plays a key role in the development of the whole starch industry, as it is crucial in guaranteeing downstream production like modified starch and related derivatives.

Domestic raw material supply can meet the demand from native starch production except cassava, which is a strong support to improve the competitiveness of China’s native starch industry. Native starch deep processing industry is the most important end user of native starch in China, consuming 15.45 million tonnes of native starch in 2008. Besides, native starch is also used in other downstream industries such as food processing, papermaking and beverage.

With abundant raw material supply and low manufacturing cost, corn starch has become the most important native starch variety in China. The corn starch output had jumped to 14.50 million tonnes in 2008 from 9.00 million tonnes in 2004, with CAGR of 12.66%. With
the requirement of  strict environmental protection, small scale manufacturers with little investment in environmental protection have been gradually phased out. Owing to low price and cheap transportation cost, China’s corn starch is quite competitive in Eastern Asia and Southeast Asia.
All findings are from CCM’s report Future of Starches in China. If you are interested in this report,  please feel free to contact us at econtact@cnchemicals.com.

September Issue Corn Products China News Released

CCM has published September issue of Corn Products China News recently, covering the latest news of various corn products, including price fluctuation, market trends and intelligence, legislations and policies, technologies, area dynamics and corn supply, etc.

In H1 2011, some kinds of corn products enjoyed good growth. Thanks to the booming market of food and feed, leading producers of additives used in both kinds of products, such as starch sugar, corn starch and lysine, put on pretty good performance in H1 2011; some of them have already decided to expand their business in the next one to three years. Oppositely, some kinds of corn products suffered terrible performance. For example, the development of vitamin C has been restrained by its excessive supply and price drop.

High raw material cost is always a big problem for corn producers, and its impact is expected to last to the rest months this year. China’s inflation rate fell to 6.2% in August 2011 from 6.5% in the previous month: this is a move in the right direction but far above the average 4% set by the government for the whole year. Corn price in China is high and stable in Sept. 2011 thanks to its strong demand in feed industry, even though its rich harvest this year is almost certain.

Promising Future of Modified Starch in China

At present, modified starch industry in China situates in a growing stage; it's believed that there's still plenty of room for its further development, according to CCM’s September issue of Corn Products China News.

China's total output of modified starch reached about 1.24 million tonnes in 2010, realizing a 17.4% year-on-year growth. Paper industry and food industry are still the top two largest downstream markets of modified starch in China in 2010 and 2011.

In fact, modified starch industry in China is still not fully developed yet, with a promising future laying ahead. Statistics show that the per-capita consumption volume of modified starch in China was only 1 kg in 2010, while it averaged out at 1.2 kg all over the world, and that of the US reached 10 kg. Thus, the industry in China has great room for development.

Besides, the first national standard for modified food starch will be published in the future, which can promote the further fast development of modified food starch industry.

For the further development of domestic modified starch industry, producers should pay much attention to the development of  proper varieties and expansion of product mix so as to enter a new market and cater to specific demand from customers. Domestic producers should also improve R&D capability so that modified starch industry in China can develop better and faster.

-China's corn starch industry puts on good performance in H1 2011, with some major producers' -gross profit margins seeing a slight increase over H1 2010.
-Output of modified starch in China witnessed a 17.4% increase in 2010 over 2009.
-Both China's import and export volume of corn products witnessed an uptrend in July 2011, especially the former one with a 1,035% rise over the previous month.
-Domestic price of citric acid has witnessed a downtrend since July 2011 due to sluggish demand from export.

China's Modified Starch Output Posts 17.4% Growth in 2010

According to China Starch Industry Association (CSIA), China's total output of modified starch reached about 1.24 million tonnes in 2010, realizing a 17.4% year-on-year growth thanks to brisk demand. At present, modified starch industry in China situates in a growing stage; it's believed that there's still plenty of room for its further development, according to CCM’s September issue of Corn Products China News.

According to CCM's report Future of Modified Starch in Asia Pacific published in Dec. 2010, China's total capacity of modified starch reached 1.68 million t/a in 2010. Over 30 producers own capacity of over 10,000t/a; among them, only two have the capacity beyond 100,000t/a: Zhucheng Xingmao Corn Developing Co., Ltd. (Zhucheng Xingmao) and Guangxi Mingyang Bio-chem Technology Co., Ltd. (Guangxi Mingyang). It's believed that paper industry and food industry are still the top two largest downstream markets of modified starch in China in 2010 and 2011, so the specifiations of modified starch applicable to be used in both industries are more popular in China than other kinds.

In fact, modified starch industry in China is still not fully developed yet, with a promising future laying ahead. According to CSIA, the per-capita consumption volume of modified starch in China was only 1 kg in 2010, while it averaged out at 1.2 kg all over the world, and that of the US reached 10 kg. Thus, the industry in China has great room for development.

In H1 2011, it's believed that the indsutry also performed well. According to Global Bio-chem Technology Group Company Limited (Global Bio-chem), one of the leading modified starch producers in China with capacity of 80,000t/a in 2011, its sales volume and gross profit of modified starch increased by 23% and 117% in H1 2011 over H1 2010. The increase in sales volume, as explained by the company, is the flourishing market of paper industry.

Besides, a national standard for modified food starch will be published in the future, which can promote the further fast development of modified food starch industry. This first specific national standard for modified food starch can regulate the production and guarantee the product quality. In March 2011, the draft of the standard was approval by a group of experts from Standardization Administration of China, CSIA, some leading producers and so on. Players in the industry are looking forward to the publication and taking effect.

For the further development of domestic modified starch industry, producers should pay much attention to develop proper varieties and expand product mix so as to enter a new market and cater to specific demand from customers. Large and strong global modified starch players have many advantages in the market competition for they are superior in R&D and technology innovation. It's believed that given domestic producers' strengthening of R&D capability, modified starch industry in China can develop better and faster in the future.

China Starch Output Continues to Grow in 2011

Guangzhou China, July 29, 2011 – The latest issue of Corn Products China News released by CCM presents that China's total output of starches reached 19.7 million tonnes in 2010, up by 9.7% over 2009.

The increase in starch output in 2010 is
mainly driven by the strong demand for starch in downstream industries, like starch sugar, sugar alcohol and modified starch. Statistics show that total output of starch sugar products (liquid) increased by 13.1% in 2010 over 2009. Particularly, the output of high fructose corn syrup (HFCS, one kind of starch sugar) reached over 500,000 tonnes in 2010, up 41% over 2009 because sucrose price in China skyrocketed to a high level in 2010.

It's believed that the total output of starch in China will
keep growing in 2011 thanks to its booming downstream market. Particularly, the output of potato starch will be stimulated to rise by the increase in China's anti-dumping duty on the EU's potato starch since April 2011. (The anti-dumping duty has been increased to 12.6%-56.7% since 19 April 2011 from 17%-35% before.) Output of corn starch is greatly affected by government policy. At present, constructing new production lines of corn starch will be hard to get approval. And if there are no other restriction policies to come out, it's believed that the output of corn starch will increase this year.

More news about the industrial trend, company dynamics, market price, and future forecast are unveiled in the latest issue of Corn Products China News.

The following highlights are covered in the latest issue of Corn Products China News:
-Total output of starch in China increased by 9.7% in 2010 over 2009.
-Northeast Pharmaceutical has begun to suspend its VC production for routine maintenance since 15 July 2011.-Compared with April 2011, total import volume of corn products in May 2011 increased, but the export volume dropped.-Lysine price maintains an uptrend in July 2011 over last month, while prices of tryptophan, threonine, and methionine perform relatively stable.-Price of VB2 witnesses an uptrend in July 2011, which will continue in the near future as believed.
-Shandong Longlive begins to go public on 20 July 2011, but its fuel ethanol business arouses concerns about the company’s prospect.-Global Bio-chem was granted the BioPreferred label by USDA for its polyol chemical biopropylene glycol in June 2011.-Xiwang Sugar is going to purchase two starch production lines and two production lines of maltodextrin from Xiwang Pharmaceutical in late 2011.-Xanthan gum is expected to have a promising market in 2011.-Some inferior capacities in citric acid, MSG and alcohol industries are to be eliminated by the end of 2011.-Luwei Pharmaceutical becomes one of the largest sorbitol manufacturers with 50,000t/a capacity in 2011.-Import volume of cassava starch is expected to be higher in 2011 over 2010 thanks to its booming demand in China.-It’s found through a questionnaire survey that corn price still has room for increasing before new corn comes out in 2011 as expected.

2010 China Starch Output up 9.7% over 2009

July 29, 2011, CCM - According to China Starch Industry Association (CSIA), China's total output of starches (corn starch, cassava starch, potato starch, sweet potato starch, wheat starch, etc.) reached 19.7 million tonnes in 2010, increasing by 9.7% over 2009. Moreover, the output of corn starch, the largest category of starch in China, also increased by about 10% in 2010 over last year. Meanwhile, sweet potato starch, wheat starch and other starches also witnessed slight increase in output, and that of potato starch rose obviously. But CSIA didn't reveal the accurate output data of cassava starch in 2010. (FIGURE2)Based on CCM’s July issue of Corn Products China News, the increase in starch output in 2010 is majorly driven by the strong demand for starch in downstream industries, like starch sugar, sugar alcohol and modified starch. According to CSIA, total output of starch sugar products (liquid) increased by 13.1% in 2010 over 2009. Particularly, the output of high fructose corn syrup (HFCS, one kind of starch sugar) reached over 500,000 tonnes in 2010, up 41% over 2009 because sucrose price in China skyrocketed to a high level in 2010.

In sugar alcohol industry, total output of major sugar alcohols (sorbitol, xylitol, maltitol, mannitol and erythritol) also witnessed an uptrend in 2010, which increased by about 9% over 2009, according to CCM's latest sugar alcohol report published in May 2011: Production, Market and Manufacturing Cost of Sugar Alcohols in China. Along with the output increase of sugar alcohol products, the demand for starch (majorly referred to corn starch) followed to rise as it is one of the most important raw materials of sugar alcohols.

Moreover, according to Modified Starch Speciality Council of CSIA, modified starch's output in China increased by 4% over 2009.

Besides the increase in output, starch's production technology also improved in 2010 compared with 2009. Take corn starch for example, its average starch yield in 2010 was 69.9% compared with 65.9% in 2009. The higher average starch yield means the unit consumption of raw material has been reduced to some extent, so did the production cost. Moreover, the average unit consumption of water, electricity and steam also reduced in 2010 over last year.

However, the unit consumption in corn starch's production varies among different manufacturers. In 2010, the highest starch yield in all

corn starch manufacturers was 71.2%, and the lowest one was just 64.1%; the lowest unit consumption of water was 1.5t/t, and the highest 6t/t; the lowest unit consumption of electric power was 111kWh/t, and the highest was 250kWh/t; the lowest unit consumption of steam was 0.66t/t, and the highest was 2.34t/t. In 2011-2015, it's believed that the government will try to clear out starch production lines with inferior technology and low capacity.

It's believed that the total output of starch in China will maintain an uptrend in 2011 thanks to its booming downstream market. Particularly, potato starch's output will be stimulated to rise by the increase in China's anti-dumping duty on the EU's potato starch since April 2011. (The anti-dumping duty has been increased to 12.6%-56.7% since 19 April 2011 from 17%-35% before.) Output of corn starch is greatly affected by government policy. At present, constructing new production lines of corn starch will be hard to get approval. And if there is no other restriction policies to come out, it's believed that corn starch's output will increase this year.
