Main market situation of bitter gourd seed in South China

Bitter gourd, also called bitter melon, is a popular vegetable in domestic market, with its special medicinal effects in reducing pathogenic fire. Originated from tropical and subtropical regions, bitter gourd has been widely planted in China for long-time artificial planting and breeding, but it is mainly concentrated in South China covering Guangdong, Guangxi and Hainan, according to CCM International’s July issue of Seed China News.

In order to figure out the main market situation of bitter gourd seed, CCM International invites an industry insider- Meng Lei to talk about the bitter gourd seed market in South China. Meng Lei, who obtained his Master's degree of agronomy from South China Agricultural University, currently acts as a sales manager of Guangdong Kenong Vegetable Seed Co., Ltd. (Guangdong Kenong) which mainly operates vegetable varieties bred by Vegetable Research Institute, Guangdong Academy of Agricultural Sciences (VRI, GDAAS).

CCM International: What are the major types of bitter gourd in South China?

Meng Lei: Generally speaking, there are four major types of bitter gourd in South China, namely striped protuberance type (long-oil bitter gourd, 长身油瓜), granular protuberance type (pearl bitter gourd, 珍珠苦瓜), the intermediate type of the two above (intermediate type) and coniform fruit type (coniform bitter gourd, 大顶苦瓜). Long-oil bitter gourd and pearl bitter gourd are the leading types in South China, occupying a vast majority of total bitter gourd area.

CCM International: Which type of bitter gourd do consumers prefer to eat in South China?

Meng Lei: The eating habits of bitter gourd are different for residents in various areas. It is common that consumers in a place would prefer the special taste of a type of bitter gourd and would probably not accept other types of bitter gourd. The quality of pearl bitter gourd is generally better than that of long-oil bitter gourd and most consumers prefer to eat pearl bitter gourd which is becoming more popular in South China.

CCM International: How vast is the planting area of bitter gourd in South China?

Meng Lei: The planting area of bitter gourd is not fixed, generally fluctuating with the changes of bitter gourd price and consumption habits in local areas. As far as we know, the total planting area of bitter gourd in Guangdong maintains around 20,000 ha. each year; Guangxi and Hainan would totally have 13,000 to 20,000 ha. of bitter gourd planting fields.

CCM International: What about the major planting distributions of bitter gourd in South China?

Meng Lei: Nearly all key vegetable counties in the three provinces or regions of South China have bitter gourd planting fields more or less. In Guangdong, bitter gourd planting is mainly concentrated in Jiangmen, Dongguan, Huizhou, Shanwei, Yufu, etc.; in Guangxi, it is mainly concentrated in Nanning, Guilin, Liuzhou, etc. Bitter gourd is widely planted in Hainan but the total planting area is relatively small and the multiple cropping index is relatively high in Hainan, compared with that in Guangdong and Guangxi.
CCM International: Can you introduce some prominent varieties of bitter gourd in South China?

Meng Lei: In South China, most varieties of long-oil bitter gourd are bred by VRI, GDAAS, such as the representative variety "Fenglv" (丰绿) which once held half of bitter gourd planting fields in Guangdong. As for pearl bitter gourd, various excellent varieties have been bred or introduced by a number of units such as Known-You Seed Co., Ltd. (Known-You), Shantou Jinhan Seed Co., Ltd. (Shantou Jinhan), Guangdong Provincial Improved Variety Introduce Service Corporation (GPIVISC), etc., with some representative varieties like "Black Pearl" (黑珍珠), "Cuifei" (翠妃), "Lvxiu" (绿秀), etc. The intermediate type of bitter gourd generally has a small market share in South China, only planted in some areas. Coniform bitter gourd is also mainly concentrated in some areas of South China like Jiangmen City of Guangdong Province, with some representative varieties like "Yuhe" (玉和) and "Cuilv 3" (翠绿3号).

CCM International: Which varieties of bitter gourd do farmers prefer to plant in South China?

Meng Lei: Farmers like to plant those bitter gourd varieties which can bear fruits with higher selling price in market. It is sure that the fruit prices of winter-planting and early-maturing bitter gourd varieties are generally higher than those of common varieties, and thus many farmers prefer to plant winter-planting and early-maturing bitter gourd. Moreover, the bitter gourd varieties with high yield, good appearance and nice quality are also well recognized by farmers in South China. As mentioned above, pearl bitter gourd with better quality is quite popular among farmers, compared with other bitter gourd varieties.

CCM International: Are bitter gourd seeds sold by weight or grain number in the market?

Meng Lei: In the market, bitter gourd seeds are sold either by weight (gram) or by grain number. However, bitter gourd seeds sold by grain number usually have better quality and higher price while bitter gourd seeds sold by weight mostly belong to medium and low grades. Overall, high-grade bitter gourd seeds have been coated to enhance planting performance and improve commodity value before selling in the market. (Guangzhou China, September 1, 2011)

Xi'an Jinpeng Intends to Lead Domestic Tomato Breeding

Xi'an Jinpeng Seed Co., Ltd. (Xi'an Jinpeng), a prominent tomato seed supplier in China, fully opened an R&D center in early 2012. The R&D center, located in the Modern Agriculture Demonstration Garden of Yangling City, Shaanxi Province, is committed to tomato research and commercialized breeding. When the construction of R&D center was launched in 2010, a new company named Shaanxi Jinpeng Seed Co., Ltd. was formally incorporated in Yangling City, with registered capital of USD1.58 million (RMB10 million), which acts as the special R&D department of Xi'an Jinpeng, according to CCM International’s June Issue of Seed China News.

As a private enterprise specialized in tomato breeding and seed production, Xi'an Jinpeng has been facing an increasingly intense competition in domestic tomato seed market, as more and more tomato varieties have been introduced by seed companies both at home and abroad. Relying on the R&D center, Xi'an Jinpeng intends to accelerate tomato breeding process and develop more tomato varieties with great competitiveness.

It is understood that Xi'an Jinpeng's R&D center is composed of laboratories of biotechnology, tomato pathology and tomato breeding, 50 tomato planting greenhouses with high standard, a tomato seed processing workshop and a seed vault with low temperature and humidity, totally covering an area of 6.53 ha. (98 mu). At present, tomato breeding experiments are conducted normally in the R&D center. The varieties and combinations on exhibition are attracting large number of vegetable growers, distributors and breeding experts from various places.

Xi'an Jinpeng was founded in 2001 by a tomato breeder: Li Xiaodong who acts as the company's general manager and also the director of Xi'an Emperor Institute of Vegetable which is a part of Xi'an Jinpeng. With a powerful R&D team led by Li Xiaodong, Xi'an Jinpeng has continuously developed a series of tomato varieties with good commodity and excellent resistance to relevant diseases and pests.

"Jinpeng 1", Xi'an Jinpeng's pink tomato variety with great tolerance for storage and transportation, has been well recognized by domestic growers. After being planted for over ten years, "Jinpeng 1" still occupies a high market share in northwestern and eastern areas.

"Jinpeng M6", another excellent pink tomato variety of Xi'an Jinpeng bred in 2008, presents a great resistance to Meloidogyne. In May 2011, "Jinpeng M6" obtained the appraisal of Crop Variety Approval Committee in Shaanxi Province. Revealed by Li Xiaodong, the planting area of "Jinpeng M6" at home has seen steady growth in recent years.

Eyeing the widespread tomato yellow leaf curl virus (TY), Xi'an Jinpeng has successfully cultivated some anti-TY pink tomato varieties since 2010, such as "Jinpeng 10" and "Jinpeng 11". With excellent resistance and fine commodity, Xi'an Jinpeng's anti-TY tomato varieties have been well recognized in the market.

"Our existing anti-TY tomato varieties are only achievements of transition," said Li Xiaodong, "and we shall take commodity improvement as the primary objective of tomato breeding: taking into account the disease and pest resistance under the premise of ensuring the commodity of tomato."

Mr. Li believes that there are almost no excellent pink tomato varieties at home which can perfectly combine TY resistance and good commodity mainly covering appearance, flavor and nutrition quality. In his opinion, numerous tomato varieties of domestic and foreign companies have been in a tangled warfare, none of which have occupied absolute advantage. However, Mr. Li considers that the status of tangled warfare would not last too long, in view of the increasing efforts of breeders in tomato variety improvement.

"Tomato growers have gained more and more experience for preventing and controlling TY, and thus the resistance to TY would not be so important for tomato breeding in future," said Mr. Li.

In course of development, Xi'an Jinpeng's biggest obstacle is the infringement from other illegal operators, rather than the great competitiveness of multinational seed companies. Some tomato seeds of Xi'an Jinpeng like "Jinpeng 1" and "Jinpeng M6" have suffered infringement in varying degrees, which has caused great loss to Xi'an Jinpeng. According to Mr. Li, the company wishes more protection over intellectual property rights from the government in future.

As for the competition between domestic and foreign companies, Mr. Li considers that it is also a mutual promotion. While crowding domestic seed players, multinational seed companies have brought abundant germplasm resources and advanced management concepts to domestic counterparts.

At present, Xi'an Jinpeng mainly markets tomato seeds in the north part of China. The company still has a weak development capability for the market of southern areas mainly covering Guangdong, Guangxi, Fujian and Hainan. Revealed by Mr. Li, Xi'an Jinpeng has not bred appropriate varieties for southern areas and it will increase corresponding R&D efforts to develop southern market.

Domestic Tomato Processing Industry Sees Overcapacity

China, a world's leading tomato paste producer, apart from the U.S. and Italy, witnessed continuous gloom of tomato processing industry in 2011, mainly caused by domestic overcapacity and slack sales in overseas market. The sluggish tomato processing industry would probably reduce the operating rate of tomato processing enterprises and lower farmers' enthusiasm for planting processing tomato in 2012, according to CCM International’s April Issue of Seed China News.

For tomato processing enterprises, 2011 was a tough year, with operating results inferior to previous years.

For example, Xinjiang Chalkis Co., Ltd. (Chalkis), a listed company specialized in tomato paste producing and marketing, predicted on 31 Jan. 2011 that it would have an unbelievably poor performance in 2011, with net loss hitting USD136.25 million (RMB880 million). Chalkis mainly contributes its heavy loss to the depressed export price of tomato paste and the soaring production cost.

COFCO Tunhe Co., Ltd. (COFCO Tunhe), the largest tomato processor in China, also suffered unsatisfactory performance in tomato processing business, with the operating profit margin decreasing from 20.31% in 2010 to 14.55% in 2011. The company blames its decreased profit in tomato paste to continuous price downturn, increasing cost and sluggish overseas market. In 2011, COFCO Tunhe totally achieved net profit of USD5.01 million (RMB32.38 million), thanks to considerable government subsidies and investment returns.

Gansu Dunhuang Seed Co., Ltd. (Gansu Dunhuang), a dominant seed company, also witnessed deficit in tomato paste business in 2011. Revealed by Gansu Dunhuang, its subsidiary engaged in tomato paste processing presents a net loss of USD1.28 million (RMB8.27 million) in 2011, heavier over the previous year, mainly owing to domestic overcapacity and decreased export.

Leading tomato processors were so depressed in 2011, not to mention small and medium ones which generally suffered serious deficits in 2011, even facing business failures.

According to industry insiders, tomato processing companies have made rapid capacity expansion during the past few years, causing the current overcapacity and intense competition. Since most tomato paste produced by domestic companies is sold abroad, the sluggish tomato paste market in Europe and the U.S. has made their performance even worse in 2011. Moreover, the depressed price and the soaring cost have posed greater challenges to domestic tomato processors.

In view of the slack sales and oversupply, tomato processing companies would significantly cut their production capacity in 2012. It is expected that most tomato paste manufacturers would have to deal with large stocks to return funds.

It is released that at present COFCO Tunhe Co., Ltd. (COFCO Tunhe) whose capacity of tomato paste is over 350,000t/a, still has a large number of stocks of tomato paste, with constant downturn in export. Actually, COFCO Tunhe has planned to put more efforts to enhance its sugar processing business in future.

As for Gansu Dunhuang Seed Co., Ltd. (Gansu Dunhuang), it has already transferred most of the investment originally in tomato processing project into corn seed business at the end of 2011.strong resistance and high quality will be continuously promoted for the protection of food security in China.

The gloomy tomato processing industry would seriously affect farmers' enthusiasm for planting processing tomato. It can be predicted that the planting area of processing tomato in 2012 would keep declining, following the significant decrease in 2011.

In China, processing tomato planting is mainly concentrated in Xinjiang, Gansu and Inner Mongolia. Xinjiang, as the largest production base of processing tomato at home, owns planting area of processing tomato of around 64,000 ha. In 2011, the output of processing tomato reached 4.35 million tonnes in Xinjiang, accounting for 15% of the world's total yield. With more than 110 tomato processing companies, Xinjiang annually exports over 700,000 tonnes of tomato paste to over 100 countries and regions in the world.
