Steady Growth of Sugar Alcohol Price in China

As the deep processed products widely used in pharmacy and food industries, sugar alcohols are more and more popular, especially VC and sugar-free chewing gum industries. The demand for sugar alcohols in the domestic market has been growing fast, driving up market prices of sugar alcohols over the past 10 years.

Sharing some similar features with sugar and having good thermostability, sugar alcohol products are increasingly popular in food and health care products industry. In China, there are five major types of sugar alcohols: sorbitol, mannitol, erythritol, xylitol and maltitol. With the steady growth of sugar alcohols’ prices, then in 2012-2013, domestic market prices of sugar alcohols tended to be stable overall; however, the market prices of some sugar alcohol products even declined due to the oversupply and the weak demand.

To clearly describe the prices of sugar alcohols in China in 2013 and give readers some constructive opinions, CCM has obtained lots of information with diverse methods to compile a full report, Sugar Alcohol Price in China, about the prices analysis of sugar alcohols in the following aspects:
-       Overview of sugar alcohol industry in China
-       Price of sugar alcohols in China in 2013 (by month)

Besides, rising awareness of healthy diet pushes up consumption of sugar alcohols in food industry greatly over the past years. Consumption of sugar alcohols in food industry is estimated to remain at a high level.

The low sucrose price in 2013 resulted in contrasting growth of the net profits of two major FOS producers, namely QHT and Baolingbao. QHT's net profit was predicted to have increased in 2013 over 2012, while Baolingbao predicted a decline in its net profit for 2013.

In 2013, China's HFCS producers have been caught in similar declines in profit margins as in 2012. Focus of Shandong Longlive's XOS sales may turn to overseas markets

According to the research results, XOS is not absorbed by human body, and it is also not a kind of human nutrition. The function of XOS for human body lies in its positive effect on human's intestinal flora—XOS stimulates the growth of bifidobacterium. The research results revealed that XOS has the potential treatment function on degeneracy autism. The experimental study of the School has proved that the quantity of bifidobacterium of children diagnosed with autism is less than that of normal children, which means XOS may perform a treatment function as it stimulates the growth of bifidobacterium. In addition, the research results also showed that XOS may have a positive effect on treatment for some diseases in which intestinal bacteria are involved, such as metabolic syndrome, schizophrenia and Alzheimer's disease. According to Shandong Longlive, it is estimated that 20%-30% of the population in developed countries are suffering from the diseases mentioned above. Therefore the unique function of XOS may stimulate those sufferers' consumption of the product.

Shandong Longlive expressed that the purpose for the research on XOS' function is to explore the overseas markets, especially the US market. And the positive research results provide such an opportunity. It is believed that the company will shift the focus of its XOS sales strategy from the domestic market to the overseas markets.

In fact, almost all of Shandong Longlive's XOS is sold domestically all the time. However, compared with other functional oligosaccharides, such as fructo-oligosaccharide (FOS) and galacto-oligosaccharide (GOS), the consumption of XOS in China increased quite slowly in recent years, due to its small serving size in downstream products and its low popularity among the Chinese public. For example, according to Shandong Longlive, the sales volume of its XOS increased from 3,108 tonnes in 2009 to 3,532 tonnes in 2012. However, increases in the sales volumes of FOS and GOS are way more significant. According to Quantum Hi-Tech (China) Biological Co., Ltd. (QHT), a leading FOS and GOS producer in China, its sales volume of FOS increased by over 1,300 tonnes to 10,259 tonnes in 2012 from 2009, and the sales volume of its GOS even increased to 1,234 tonnes from just 94 tonnes in 2009.

Although FOS is currently the main functional oligosaccharide consumed in developed countries, its efficacy is not as good as that of XOS according to Shandong Longlive. Besides, the public's health consciousness in developed countries, such as the US, are higher than in China, which hints that products with health care function will be more popular in these countries. The research results offer more detailed data and authoritative conclusion for the company to enhance the competitiveness of its XOS, as well as attract the public's consumption.

For Shandong Longlive, high health consciousness of citizens in developed countries means more sales opportunities. Its large investment in the research was aimed at the entrance in markets of developed countries. The research results are more favorable to the company's XOS sales to developed countries than to China. Under the current situation in China, including low health consciousness of the public and low consumption growth of XOS, it is easier to explore markets in developed countries than China's. Moreover, the new XOS production project of Shandong Longlive with a capacity of 6,000t/a is predicted to go into operation in Q1 2014, which indicates that the company should consider how to digest its huge production capacity of the product. Based on the reasons above, it is obviously wise for Shandong Longlive to focus more on overseas markets than to the domestic market.

Domestic output of sugar alcohol witnesses uptrend in recent years

Sugar alcohol has witnessed fairly fast development in China in recent years according to CCM's newly issued report, Survey of Sugar Alcohol in China. In detail, the outputs of sorbitol, maltitol, xylitol, mannitol and erythritol, five main kinds of sugar alcohol, reached 839,600 tonnes, 80,400 tonnes, 66,900 tonnes, 22,700 tonnes and 11,500 tonnes in 2012, growing with CAGRs of 12.2%, 12.1%, 7.6%, 16.1% and 34.6% respectively in the past four years (FIGURE 6).

The increasing output of sugar alcohol in China is mainly attributed to growing demand from downstream industries especially food and pharmaceuticals industries, the two largest consumption fields of sugar alcohol which consumed 82% of domestic sugar alcohol in 2012 (FIGURE 7). For example, the consumption quantity of sugar alcohol in confectionery, baked food and beverage were about 134,000 tonnes, 124,000 tonnes and 34,000 tonnes in 2012, up 52.2%, 176.9% and 111.5% respectively compared with those in 2010. China's food industry has undergone rapid development in recent years, pushing up demand for sugar alcohol as food additive. The year-on-year growth rates in the output of food industry in China were 17.1% in 2011 and 11.9% in the first 11 months of 2012 according to data from National Bureau of Statistics of China. In addition, people care about their health far more than before and they prefer food with no or low content of sugar as the number of diabetic and obese patients is becoming larger and larger in China. Hence, demand for sugar alcohol such as xylitol and erythritol grows because they perform well as sweeteners that do not raise blood sugar level.

As for the consumption in pharmaceuticals industry, sugar alcohol is mainly applied in vitamin C (VC) and injection products. Although the consumption volume of sugar alcohol in VC did not see growth due to the poor export performance of VC, the consumption volume of sugar alcohol in injection products enjoyed rapid growth. Specifically, the consumption volume of sugar alcohol in injection products was 96,600 tonnes in 2012, up 62.7% compared with that two years ago. In detail, the CAGRs of the consumption volumes of sorbitol, mannitol and xylitol in injection products in China were 27.6%, 16.5% and 47.3% respectively during 2010-2012.

It is predicted that domestic output of sugar alcohol will keep uptrend in the future due to the increasing demand from downstream industries. In the Development Plan of Biological Industry issued in Dec. 2012, domestic biological pharmaceuticals shall increase with a CAGR of over 20% in output value during 2013-2015. And as indicated in the 12th Five-Year Development Plan (2011-2015) for Food Industry, the output value of China's food industry will grow with a CAGR of 15% during 2011-2015. Consequently, the fast developing downstream industries will boost demand for sugar alcohol, increasing its output in the future.
