China's ex-works price of citric acid undergoes downtrend, Sept.-Nov. 2013

As early as June-Aug. 2013, manufacturers increased the ex-works price of citric acid several times due to the increasing product cost and the peak season of the drinks industry, which increases demand for citric acid after suffering losses due to the low price of citric acid in the first five months of 2013.

The decrease in the ex-works price of citric acid during Sept.-Nov. 2013 could be attributed to the following aspects:
First and most important, weak demand for citric acid. Compared with H1 2013, the ex-works price of citric acid remained high during Sept.-Oct. 2013 so that dealers had weak desire to purchase large amounts of this product. Besides, as entering the off season of drinks, the demand for citric acid from the beverage industry atrophied accordingly.

Additionally, China is the largest citric acid producer in the world, and the consumption of this product depends on the overseas market to a great extent. However, citric acid exports remained weak in this period. According to data from China Customs, the export volumes of citric acid were 51,425 tonnes in Sept. and 52,501 tonnes in Oct., 7,155 tonnes and 6,079 tonnes less than that in Aug. respectively.

Second, the decrease in the cost. As the supply of corn has been increasing since Oct. 2013, the market price of corn declined in Oct., and it fluctuated at a low level in Nov. 2013.

Moreover, under the current circumstance of citric acid overcapacity, in order to occupy more market share, manufacturers have carried out low price tactics during this period. Also, towards the end of 2013, manufactures have a strong desire to sell their stock of citric acid to get funds.
It is estimated that the ex-works price of citric acid will remain stable in Dec. 2013. Generally, the profitability of citric acid has been very low due to the decreasing sales price of this product. Plus, with downstream dealers willing to purchase citric acid for stock at its current lower price, it is unlikely that citric acid producers will decrease the price. However, winter is the traditional slack season of citric acid, so demand for it will still be limited, which will hardly drive up its price.

In the long term, citric acid will still face challenges in China, as its export volume may be affected by the European Union (EU)'s sunset review and midterm review investigations on China's citric acid, which started on Nov. 30, 2013 by the European Commission, in response to applications from SA Citrique Belge and Jungbunzlauer Austria AG. The midterm review investigation is mainly to survey the damage form in the anti-dumping measure. The Hs Codes of correlated products are 29181400 and ex29181500.

In Sept. 2007, the EU launched an anti-dumping investigation into China's citric acid, and in Dec. 2008, the EU issued its final ruling.

The Netherlands, Germany, Italy and Spain are the main EU destinations of China's citric acid. In 2012, China had exported 117,620 tonnes of citric acid to these four countries, accounting for 16% of the total export volume of domestic citric acid.

If the EU rules to continue anti-dumping measures against China's citric acid during the implementation term of anti-dumping measures, it may have a negative influence on China's export of citric acid in the near future

Furthermore, the demand for citrate will also have a certain impact on the demand for citric acid, as it is a direct downstream product of citric acid and its consumption relies on the overseas market as well.

Similarly, the Netherlands, Germany, Belgium, Spain, Italy and Poland are also the main EU export destinations of China's citrate. Data from China Customs shows that in 2012, China had exported a total of 42,700 tonnes of citrate to these six countries, accounting for around 33% of China's total export volume of citrate.

Global Bio-Chem and Global Sweeteners cooperate with ADM

In detail, according to ADM's indication, it will be the exclusive sales channel for several of Global Sweeteners' sweetener products. The marketing territory of the company will include various Southeast Asian countries, the Far East, Australia and New Zealand from June 2013. ADM maintains several regional sales offices in Asia, including those in China, India, Singapore, Japan and Australia.

Furthermore, ADM will also use its expansive marketing and sales network to distribute a variety of Global Bio-chem's lysine products to customers in South American countries such as Brazil and Argentina. As is known, lysine is a kind of amino acid commonly used by livestock producers to improve the nutritional value of animal rations. Global Bio-chem is one the world's leading lysine producers and ADM is a market leader of lysine in South America. As a result, it's beneficial for these two companies' further development.

"ADM is pleased to have the opportunity to provide many of the high-value products in Global Bio-chem's portfolio to our extensive network of customers in Asia and South America," said Ismael Roig, President of ADM Asia-Pacific. "This collaboration leverages the strengths of both companies for the benefit of customers, and we anticipate a positive response on both continents."

According to the 2012 annual report of Global Bio-chem, its revenue was USD1.53 billion in 2012, which decreased by 17% compared with USD1.84 billion in 2011. Moreover, its gross profit even decreased by 54% year on year, touching USD197 million in 2012 due to the increasing costs (mainly from corn) and lower sales prices of products.

The amino acid business is still the most important business of Global Bio-chem. The revenue and gross profit of the sector accounted for 54% and 93% of the company's total in 2012 respectively. However, due to the gloomy market in the feed industry and the lower sales price of lysine, the average sales price of the company's amino acids decreased by 19% compared with that in 2011 and the gross profit of the business also decreased by 46% year on year. According to the prediction by the company, it plans to expand its total capacity of lysine to 800,000t/a in 2013. As stated in the 2012 annual report of the company, its products faced intense competition from other players in the domestic market, while in the overseas market, it succeeded in maintaining stability in the sales volume and price of its products. As a result, the revenue from the company's export business in 2012 increased by 10% year on year. Thus, through the cooperation with ADM, it will facilitate Global Bio-chem's expansion of its lysine business around the world.

In addition, Global Sweeteners' revenue increased by 5.7% year on year in 2012, reaching USD583 million, but its gross profit decreased by 35.6% in 2012 over 2011. In 2012, the domestic price of sugar decreased, reducing the competitiveness of and demand for sweeteners. Furthermore, the increasing costs from raw materials and gloomy sales prices of products adversely impacted the gross profit of Global Sweeteners.

Entering into 2013, the price of sugar in China may continue to decrease. However, the new production lines of F55 HFCS in the Shanghai plant of Global Sweeteners will be put into full operation in 2013. As a high value-added product, F55 is expected to be a new profit growth source for the company since it is a popular sweetener in the beverage industry in the international market.

ADM is one of the world's leading agricultural product processors, with products mainly covering food ingredients, animal feeds and feed ingredients, biofuels and other products.

Global Bio-Chem and Global Sweeteners cooperate with ADM

On June 6, 2013, Global Bio-chem Technology Group Co., Ltd. (Global Bio-chem) and Global Sweeteners Holdings Limited (Global Sweeteners) announced that they will cooperate with Archer Daniels Midland Company (ADM) for a year. After this operation, ADM will be the sole distributor of Global Bio-chem's lysine and Global Sweeteners' sweetener products in Asian and South American markets respectively. Moreover, according to this cooperation, the Global group can develop more effective technologies through the help of ADM.

In detail, according to ADM's indication, it will be the exclusive sales channel for several of Global Sweeteners' sweetener products. Inferior capacity of citric acid, MSG and alcohol to be eliminated by late 2012

On July 9, 2012, the Ministry of Industry and Information Technology (MIIT) announced that enterprises with inferior capacity and high pollution & energy consumption in some industries, including citric acid, monosodium glutamate (MSG), alcohol, paper-making, iron and steel are to be eliminated in late 2012, according to CCM International’s  August issue of Corn Products China News.

Acccording to the announcement, all enterprises listed shall shut down their production lines by the end of 2012, or they will be punished by Chinese government, showing the government's determination to regulate domestic highly-polluting and energy-intensive industries. For example, the government will withdraw their pollutant discharge licenses and conduct other detailed punitive measures (Please refer to Corn Products China News 1107).

As for corn deep-processing industry, a total capacity of 70,000t/a citric acid, 143,000t/a MSG and 574,000t/a alcohol, were in the list (TABLE, TABLE and TABLE). Seeing the high pollution and excessive capacity in these three industries, in 2007, National Development and Reform Commission and State Environmental Protection Administration (currently known as the Ministry of Environmental Protection of China) co-issued Notice on the Elimination of Backward Capacities in Papermaking, Alcohol, MSG and Citric Acid from National Development and Reform Commission and State Environmental Protection Administration (the Notice) to regulate domestic citric acid, MSG and alcohol industries.

Generally, eliminating production lines with high pollution & energy consumption is helpful to improve the competitiveness of related industries, especially MSG and citric acid, in China, which is the largest production and export country of MSG and citric acid. Specifically speaking, the elimination will make domestic MSG and citric acid producers raise the quality and yield rates of their products, enhancing the competitiveness of their products and themselves.

Besides, the elimination can relieve the over-capacity of these products to some extent. In general, the over-capacity of these products makes their producers get in cut-throat competition, resulting in decrease or low level of their market prices and finally profit decrease or even loss of producers. For example, due to the low market price and increasing cost of citric acid, COFCO Bio-chemical (Anhui) Co., Ltd., a main citric acid producer with a capacity of 220,000t/a in China, suffered profit decrease in 2011 and H1 2012 according to its 2011 annual report and H1 2012 report.

Furthermore, the elimination has different effects on different scaled enterprises. Usually, small producers have inferior technologies, higher energy consumption & pollution than large-scale producers do. As a result, they have to shut down their production lines or even the whole company but large-scale ones don't. For example, Henan Lotus Flower Gourmet Powder Co., Ltd. (Lotus Flower Gourmet Powder), a main MSG producer in China with a capacity of 300,000t/a, has to eliminate three production lines of MSG with a total capacity of 113,000t/a according to the elimination list (Henan Lotus Flower Gourmet Powder Co., Ltd. and Henan Lotus Flower Enzyme Engineering Co., Ltd. are subsidiary companies of Lotus Flower Gourmet Powder). But an insider from Lotus Flower Gourmet Powder indicated that its capacity wouldn't sharply decrease because they planned to set up new production lines of MSG with advanced facilities and technologies after the elimination.

Chinese government has reinforced the elimination of inferior capacities in recent years, as clearly stated in some policies. For instance, the Notice just indicated that production lines of citric acid that didn't meet national pollution discharge standard should be eliminated, but the Catalogue for the Guidance of Industrial Structure Adjustment (2011 edition) published in April 2011 added that capacity of citric acid below 20,000t/a shall be eliminated.

As a matter of fact, the actually eliminated inferior capacities always exceeded the target. For example, the target eliminating inferior capacity of alcohol in 2010 was 300,000t/a according to the Notice while 688,000t/a capacity was actually eliminated. For another, the total eliminated capacity of citric acid, MSG and alcohol in 2011 and 2012 has already exceeded the elimination target in the 12th Five-Year Plan (2011-2015) (the Plan). It is predicted that Chinese government will continue strengthening the elimination of inferior capacities in the rest three years of the Plan.Inferior capacity of citric acid, MSG and alcohol to be eliminated by late 2012

On July 9, 2012, the Ministry of Industry and Information Technology (MIIT) announced that enterprises with inferior capacity and high pollution & energy consumption in some industries, including citric acid, monosodium glutamate (MSG), alcohol, paper-making, iron and steel are to be eliminated in late 2012.

2011 Annual Performance of Major Corn Products in China

There are great challenges, as well as huge opportunities of China's corn product industry in 2011. Different corn products have different performance during the whole year, affected by the factors of high raw materials cost, domestic inflation, government's strict supervision or even restriction, as well as some booming downstream markets.

As the most important raw material of corn products, corn always attracts abundant attention. And corn price had run an uptrend in general from Jan. to Sept. 2011 majorly because of its insufficient supply. The average domestic market price of corn increased by 18.6% to USD363/t in Dec. 2011 compared with that in Jan. 2011, partly caused by which, corn products' average prices also rose by 8% during the same period.

Based on the sound economic environment and some promising market situations, a few corn products have enjoyed fast development in 2011, such as starch sugar, especially HFCS (high fructose corn syrup), some amino acids, like lysine. Take HFCS as an example, due to the insufficient supply of sucrose and its high price in 2011, HFCS' demand and price have enjoyed obvious increase, attracting lots of producers to enter into this industry or expand the production of HFCS, whose capacity all over the country reaches about 3 million t/a in 2011, up 38.9% over that in 2010.

However, some corn products have suffered bad market situation in 2011, like vitamin c (VC). Owing to VC's terrible oversupply, domestic and export prices of VC have maintained a low level in 2011, resulting in great loss of VC producers.

As for future development in 2012, policies, market and industry environment make 2012 a key year for corn product's development. With the expected growth of China's economy in 2012, domestic corn product industry will still boom, but production costs will remain a problem, whilst corn price will still run at a high level due to the tight relationship between corn's supply and demand, even though corn's output enjoyed a bumper harvest in 2011. Besides, governmental restrictions will be still the leading factor to affect the industry, while it's a great opportunity for large enterprises to develop further by merging small ones.

The detailed annual review of China’s corn product industry in 2011 is shared in CCM International’s December issue of Corn Products China News. If you need a more comprehensive understanding, please feel free to contact us.
