China's captan export soars by 54.36% in H1 2013

According to Fungicide China News 1311, in H1 2013, the total export volume of captan technical and formulations in China witnessed an increase of 54.36% year on year to about 742 tonnes, according to the General Administration of Customs of the People's Republic of China (China Customs) and CCM.

In detail, China's export volume of captan technical was 327.25 tonnes in H1 2013, down by 28.78% over the same period last year. However, the soaring export of captan formulations this year offset the decline of captan technical. In H1 2013, China's export volume of captan formulations hit 414.88 tonnes, while China only exported 21.25 tonnes of captan formulations in H1 2012.

The specifications of captan technical exported in H1 2013 included 92% captan technical, 95% captan technical and 97% captan technical. Of the three specifications of captan technical, the export volume of 95% captan technical was much larger than the others, reaching about 187.25 tonnes and accounting for 57.22% of the total export volume of captan technical.

The specifications of captan formulations exported in H1 2013 included 50% captan WP and 80% captan WDG. In the same period last year, China exported no captan WDG. However, captan WDG has become a major specification for captan formulations exported this year.

In 2012, China's export volume of captan technical and formulations were 888 tonnes and 322 tonnes respectively.

The export price of captan technical was USD5.56/kg in H1 2013, higher than that of USD5.29/kg in H1 2012. As the largest exported specification of captan technical, the export price of 95% captan technical hit USD6.95/kg in Feb. 2013, but it witnessed some decrease in the following months.

The export price of captan formulations was USD6.27/kg in H1 2013, much higher than the USD4.71/kg in H1 2012, mainly boosted by the large export volume of 80% captan WDG (its price was higher than 50% captan WP). The export price of 80% captan WDG remained at USD7.5/kg in early 2013, but it declined to USD5.8/kg in June. The export price of 50% captan WP remained in an uptrend during the first five months of this year and hit USD5.2/kg in May, but it declined to USD4.2/kg in June.

China's major exporters of captan technical in H1 2013 were Zhejiang Zhuji United Chemicals Co., Ltd., Guangzhou Henong Trading Co., Ltd., Sinochem Ningbo Limited, and Nanjing Essence Fine-Chemical Co., Ltd. The export volume of captan technical from these companies accounted for about 80% of the total captan technical exported in this period. The top five export destinations of China's captan technical in H1 2013 were the US, New Zealand, Indonesia, Turkey and Venezuela.

China's major exporters of captan formulations in H1 2013 were Guangzhou Henong Trading Co., Ltd., Shandong Weifang Rainbow Chemical Co., Ltd., Sh-Inform Chemical Co., Ltd., and Shanghai AgroChina International Trade Co., Ltd. The export volume of captan formulations from these companies accounted for about 90% of the total captan formulations exported in this period. The top five export destinations of China's captan formulations in H1 2013 included the US, Guatemala, Uruguay, Ukraine and Mexico.

Registrations of thiamethoxam formulations soar in China

According to Insecticides China News 1309 issued by CCM, Recently, Syngenta is busy with the promotion of its thiamethoxam–based seed treatment product (Cruiser), by holding two Cruiser Vigor Forum in Guangdong and Shandong. The product's excellent performance and Syngenta's professional promotion work are very impressive. However, Syngenta will face intense competition from Chinese companies in its thiamethoxam business.

Besides thiamethoxam technical, many Chinese pesticide companies are actively registering thiamethoxam formulation products. By 16 July 2013, 48 thiamethoxam registrations had been approved in China, including 34 of formulations. Among the formulations registrations, 13 are from domestic companies.

The thiamethoxam formulations' registration at present is only the tip of the iceberg. It will soar in the coming one to two years. According to data from the Institute for the Control of Agrochemicals, Ministry of Agriculture (ICAMA), pesticide companies had filed 448 registration applications for thiamethoxam formulations in China, by 16 July 2013.

Before 2010, registration application of thiamethoxam formulations in China was very small, usually less than ten each year. However, the application jumped to 72 in 2010 and 74 in 2011. In 2012, the application times even hit 151, up 104% year on year. This trend continued in 2013. By 16 July 2013, the application times had hit 110.

It is very easy to understand the boom of registration application since 2010. Syngenta’s patent for thiamethoxam in China expires in 2013 and it takes two to three years for a company to register a pesticide formulation in China. As a result, many domestic companies started to file their registration applications in 2010, so that they may launch their thiamethoxam formulation products in 2013 or 2014.

The application for registrations of thiamethoxam formulations include 34 kinds of products. Thiamethoxam–single formulation is the most popular one, with the application times of 303, accounting for 67.63% of the total. Besides, the registration applications of some mixed formulations, such as thiamethoxam+pymetrozine, thiamethoxam+abamectin and thiamethoxam+lambda-cyhalothrin are also very popular. For other mixed formulations, their application times are less than ten.

Most registration applications of the thiamethoxam formulations are targeted on many crops, but most of them are focusing on rice for the control of plant hopper.

These registration applications of thiamethoxam formulations come from 209 companies. Almost all the big domestic pesticide formulations companies have filed registration application of thiamethoxam formulations. Five companies' registration application times exceed ten and the total registration application times of these companies hit 77, accounting for 17.19% of the total.

Shaanxi Meibang Group is the most active company, with the registration application times of 21. The company tries to register thiamethoxam targeted on many kinds of crops, such as rice, wheat, corn, cotton, tea, vegetable and horticultural crops.

With so many registration applications, it is believed that thiamethoxam formulations products will witness a blowout in domestic market in the coming two to three years. The potential for market disruptions of thiamethoxam formulations in domestic market is very high.

However, even for those companies that have filed registration applications, there are two opposite opinions.

"We filed the registration application for thiamethoxam formulations in 2012, but we are not optimistic about the future of this product. The registration is just for the expansion of our product portfolio, and to meet more customers' needs," said an insider from Shanghai Lianbao Cropsciences Co., Ltd (Shanghai Lianbao).

In fact, like Shanghai Lianbao, many companies are not optimistic about the future of these products, but they still try to register it. Many companies are just following others blindly. They register products that others are registering.

But some companies' expectation for this product is very high. In their minds, the sales revenue of thiamethoxam is very huge and the application field is still expanding, so it is not hard to get a slice of cake. Besides, they believe that the Chinese government will not ban thiamethoxam easily like EU.

Specifically, the export volume of chlorothalonil technical, including 96% TC, 97% TC and 98% TC, decreased to about 6,057 tonnes in H1 2013, down by 22.92% year on year. In the first six months of 2013 China exported about 1,729 tonnes of chlorothalonil formulations, including 40% SC, 72% SC and 75% WP, down by 20.99% year on year.

Among three technical specifications, 97% chlorothalonil TC ranked the first place by export volume, amounting to 4,213 tonnes in H1 2013, accounting for 69.55% of the total for chlorothalonil technical, followed by 98% TC (1,814 tonnes). As to 96% chlorothalonil TC, its export volume was the least, only about 30 tonnes (it was exported in Feb. and March 2013, and its export volume was zero in the rest of the months of H1 2013).

Chorothalonil 72% SC was the largest export specification of chlorothalonil formulations by export volume in H1 2103, totaling 880 tonnes, exceeding 50% of the total for cholorothalonil formulations. Chlorothalonil 75% WP ranked the second place by export volume, reaching 550 tonnes, accounting for 31.81%; the export volume of chlorothalonil 40% SC was the least in H1 2013, about 298 tonnes.

Among the two major cholorothalonil technical specifications (97% and 98%), their average export prices remained stable in the first half of 2013. Specifically, the average export price of  97% chlorothalonil TC was between USD3.8/kg and USD4.0/kg from Jan. to June 2013 and that of 98% chlorothalonil TC floated between USD4.5/kg and USD4.9/kg in the first five months of this year, only decreasing to about USD4.3/kg in June 2013.
