September Issue Sweeterner China News Comes Out

CCM published the latest issue of Sweeterner China News on September 5th , 2011, which covers the hot topics and dynamics of China's sweetener industry.

Some high intensity sweeteners developed well in H1 2011. For example, aspartame continued to enjoy promising development in H1 2011, which attracts some producers to expand their aspartame business. 290 tonnes of sucralose was exported in H1 2011, and the yearly growth rate was 110%.

Besides, some producers actively expand their capacity of starch sugar. For example, Global Sweeteners is expanding its corn starch capacity of 210,000t/a and Star Lake Bioscience plans to market its HFCS in October 2011.

However, the profit of some sweeteners decreased, such as erythritol, FOS and GOS. The main reason is the cost of raw material increased, which was hard to be transferred to downstream industries.

The sucrose price is believed to be the main reason behind the performance of sweetener market, just as showed in the article "Government Strengthens Adjusting Control of Sucrose Price".

All details of the above stories will be shared in CCM’s September issue of Sweeterner China News. For more information about it, please feel free to contact us at econtact@cnchemicals.com

GLG Built Stevia Breeding and Cultivation Centre in Anhui

GLG Life Tech Corporation (GLG), a world leader in the production of high-quality stevia, built a breeding and cultivation centre of stevia jointly with Anhui Science and Technology University in Anhui in June 2011. This centre is a unique provincial engineering research centre which is focused on breeding, cultivation and the breed improvement of stevia, according to CCM’s Sweeterner China News.

In light of the following two reasons, GLG believes that the stevia planting will develop well and the demand for stevia may keep increasing in the next several years, thus it has finally built this breeding and cultivation centre in Anhui.

First, the export volume of stevia sweetener has increased thanks to the growing overseas demand for it in recent years. Currently, China has already become the largest stevia sweetener supplier in the world, and around 80% of its total output of stevia sweetener is sold to overseas market. It reveals that the output of stevia is also increasing as stevia is the raw material of stevia sweetener.

Moreover, the consumption volume of stevia sweetener in China has also gradually increased for the development of sugar-free foods and beverages in recent years.

GLG builds the breeding and cultivation centre of stevia for the following two goals.
First, the centre will improve the breeding to get new stevia species which have higher steviol glycosides content in the leaves. And the major components in steviol glycosides are stevioside and rebaudioside A (RA). Those new species can help stevia sweetener processors produce high RA purity products. Moreover, the prices of high RA purity products such as RA 80%, RA 90% and RA 95% are much higher than that of stevioside, that is to say, the new species can bring GLG with high profits.

Second, the output of stevia will increase with the improving stevia planting level through education and training. What's more, the centre will help farmers learn new culture technique of stevia and prevent plant diseases and insect damage.

It is estimated that the planting industry of stevia will develop sustainably, then the output of stevia will also increase to ensure the supply. In fact, stevia is planted by native farmers and then sold as a raw material to the domestic stevia sweetener producers. On one hand, the increasing demand from stevia sweetener drives the producers to buy more stevia from farmers.

On the other hand, local governments also try their best to promote the planting industry of stevia, because it can increase the income of farmers. For example, Government of Anhui Mingguang held a purchasing meeting of stevia on 4 May 2010 which aims to help farmers sell their stevia at a reasonable price and also help stevia sweetener producers buy high quality stevia in the harvest season. That is to say, both the sweetener producers and the government are promoting the planting industry of stevia.

Erythritol industry in China to Keep Growing in the Future

Erythritol industry in China will keep on developing in the future, according to CCM’s Sweeterner China News.

Baolingbao Biology Co., Ltd. (Baolingbao), a leading Chinese producer of starch-based products and food ingredients, has been expanding its erythritol capacity, and the total capacity will reach 4,000t/a by the end of August 2011.

Baolingbao believes that the erythritol industry will develop well in the future and the demand for erythritol will also increase. Moreover, since the overseas consumption is more than the domestic one now, with the increasing overseas demand for erythritol, the domestic erythritol industry will keep on developing.

There were mainly five active erythritol producers in China by the end of 2010, with total capacity and output of 18,500t/a and 4,780 tonnes in 2010 respectively. The average operating rate of them is 25.84%, about 11% less than that of 2009. From 2006 to 2010, the capacity of erythritol had grown rapidly, while the growth of output had fallen behind. Besides, there were four producers, namely Zibo Zhongshi Green Biotech Co., Ltd., Shandong Futaste Pharmaceutical Co., Ltd., Shandong Binzhou Sanyuan Biotechnology Co., Ltd., O'Laughlin Industries Co., Ltd., using glucose to produce erythritol in order to improve the production efficiency, while Baolingbao uses corn starch in its erythritol production, which is with lower cost compared with that of using glucose.

Moreover, in 2010, among the five main active erythritol producers, four are concentrated in Shandong Province; only one is located in Tianjin City. Because erythritol is a kind of sugar alcohol and the sugar alcohol industry develops well in Shandong, most of the erythritol producers choose to be located in Shandong.

All in all, it can be predicted that the erythritol industry in China will keep on developing in the future based on the facts above.

Rising Stevia Sweetener Production in China

As a natural kind of high intensity sweetener (HIS), the usage of stevia sweetener has been approved by more and more countries and it has been becoming more and more popular in overseas market, according to CCM’s Sweeterner China News.

The booming domestic production is mainly driven by the rising demand from foreign countries. Nowadays, foreigners prefer natural food additives to artificial ones. The US, Japan and South Korea are the most important stevia sweetener markets in the world. China's stevia sweetener is mainly exported to neighboring countries and North America in the past three years. Malaysia, the US, Mexico, South Korea and Japan are the most important export destinations of China's stevia sweetener.

China is the largest stevia sweetener supplier in the world, and around 80% of its total output of stevia sweetener is sold to overseas market. From 2006 to 2010, the capacity of stevia sweetener has increased from 5,160t/a to 13,475t/a with a CAGR of 27.12%.

China's stevia sweetener production is mainly concentrated in Jiangxi Province and Shandong Province. There are mainly 25 active stevia sweetener producers in China by now. PureCircle (Jiangxi) Co., Ltd. is the biggest one, whose capacity and output reached 4,000t/a and 1,400 tonnes in 2010, accounting for 29.68% and 35.80% of the total domestic capacity and output of stevia sweetener respectively.

The above is extracted from CCM’s Sweeterner China News. You will find more sweeteners in it, including the latest information on new market dynamics, company dynamics, new sweetener products and downstream consumption trend, new legislations and policies and raw material supply dynamics.

Booming Neotame Market in China

There are still some neotame producers in China, although neotame is a globally patented product belonged to NutraSweet Property Holdings, Inc. (NutraSweet). Aiming to explore domestic and overseas market after 2013, when the patent of neotame expires, these neotame producers are working hard on improving production technology or expanding capacity, according to September Issue of CCM’s Sweeteners China News.
As a high intensity sweeteners (HIS), neotame can also be used in all kinds of food and beverage without maximum dosage, while most HIS can only be applied within a maximum dosage. That’s why neotame has become more and more popular and the demand is growing fast. And the price of neotame is quite high. The price of domestic neotame may arrange from about USD85,030/t to USD100,490/t, while the price of imported one is much higher, reaching USD618,400/t at present.

It is believed that there would be better development after 2013, when they can produce and sell more products in domestic and overseas market without any worry.

A domestic producer predicted that if NutraSweet doesn't cut down the price of its neotame, domestic neotame may take up 80% of global neotame market due to its price advantages. What's more, domestic producers are very likely to continue expansion, even some other companies may join in the production to take a bite.

-Most erythritol producers express that the profit of erythritol decreased while its cost increased in H1 2011.
-Aspartame, a major high intensity sweetener in China, continued to develop well in H1 2011, which attracts some producers to expand their aspartame business.
-China exported about 290 tonnes of sucralose in H1 2011, which increased by about 110% over H1 2010, indicating that oversea demand for sucralose increased greatly in H1 2011.
-Some neotame producers improve production or expand capacity in order to explore domestic and oversea market.
-Semi-annual report of QHT tells that its net profit fell nearly 50% in H1 2011 mainly due to the price increase of raw materials.
-Star Lake Bioscience plans to market its HFCS in Oct. 2011.
-According to the semi-annual report of Anhui Jinhe, its acesulfame-K business developed well in H1 2011, which is estimated to continue in the near future.
-In August 2011, Jincheng Starch is putting its crystalline glucose production line with total capacity of 20,000t/a into trial production in
-Lingchuan County, Jincheng City, Shanxi Province. Yongli Milk, a leading dairy processor based in Luohe City, plans to build its FOS production line to support its expansion of premium dairy business as well as FOS business as estimated.
-Global Sweeteners is expanding its corn starch capacity of 210,000t/a majorly for the expansion of its downstream products in future and its corn starch's sale.
-On 12 August 2011, GLG Life Tech Corporation (GLG) announced that it will launch zero-calorie carbonated drinks containing stevia sweetener called CSDs at the end of August 2011 on its Chinese website.
-Government takes action to strengthen its supervision over sucrose price in August 2011, but the price remains at a high level, which seems to continue in the near future, creating both opportunity and challenge for the sweetener processors.

Overview of Neotame in China

Though neotame is a globally patented product of NutraSweet Property Holdings, Inc. (NutraSweet), still a few neotame producers are operating in China. And according to CCM's investigation, some neotame producers improve production technology or expand capacity in order to explore domestic and oversea market after 2013, when the patent of neotame expires, revealing in the September Issue of CCM’s Sweeteners China News.
As a high intensity sweeteners (HIS), neotame has been approved to be used in food and beverage by the Ministry of Health of the People's Republic of China since October 2003. So far, it can also be used in all kinds of food and beverage without maximum dosage, while most HIS can only be applied within a maximum dosage, such as saccharin, cyclamate, sucralose, acesulfame-K, etc.

Neotame has been produced in China for several years, but only 10 neotame manufacturers are operating at present, most of which are small-scaled ones. According to some neotame makers, their major sale comes from domestic market. And neotame is applied in food and beverage or as a raw material of complex additives. However, in correspondence with CCM's investigation result, a few domestic neotame producers have started exporting through distribution. In order to get rid of the patent restriction, their exported neotame has to be renamed, as some insiders revealed.

At present, most neotame producers manufacture neotame 8,000 times sweeter than sucrose, which is quite preferred among their customers. However, some producers make neotame with lower sweetness—diluted neotame—only 7,000 or even 200-400 times of sucrose's. For example, a domestic producer expressed that it applies crystalline glucose as carrier to produce low purity neotame.

The price of domestic neotame may arrange from about USD85,030/t to USD100,490/t, while the price of imported one reaches a much higher USD618,400/t at present. In consideration of this, some Chinese food processors choose domestic neotame in production.

However, though the price of domestic neotame is much lower than that of imported one, the quality of most home-made product is very close to the latter on the palate thanks to similar techniques, a point shared by some distributors of imported neotame in China. For instance, a distributor of NutraSweet said that the only substantial difference between domestic and imported neotame lies in that imported neotame is produced by regular producers with global patent.

In fact, the development of domestic neotame industry is under restriction of neotame's global patent. On one hand, domestic neotame is mainly consumed by small downstream producers, whose awareness of intellectual property is rather weak, while large-scale food processors rarely use it. Compared with other HIS, the downstream application of neotame is still narrow. Moreover, it is difficult to use the name "neotame" to export domestic neotame.

Since global patent of neotame will expire in 2013, domestic neotame producers are attracted to improve their production technologies or expand capacity in order to explore domestic and oversea market. For example, a manager of a main neotame producer located in Qingdao said that the company planned to expand its capacity of neotame from H2 2011, which serves as a preparation for increasing its market share upon the expiration of neotame patent. For another instance, a manager of  a neotame producer located in Ji'nan confirmed their determination to do the same thing.

Most domestic neotame producers believe in their better development after 2013, when they can output and sell more products in domestic and oversea market without any worry. Luckily, it is estimated that the price of neotame may rise thanks to future demand increase.

A domestic producer predicted that if NutraSweet doesn't cut down the price of its neotame, domestic neotame may take up 80% of global neotame market due to its price advantage. What's more, domestic producers are very likely to continue expansion, even some other companies may join in the production to take a bite.
