Fu Yijiang: domestic TiO2 might meet price up in H2 2013

The General Manager Fu Yijiang of the Titanox Group expressed the same expectation with other domestic TiO2 prioducers and distributors that the price of domestic TiO2 might increase in H2 2013 during CCM's telephone interview with him. Titanos Group, founded in 1989, is the largest distribution channel and service provider of TiO2 in China and commands significant market recognition and market shares in the industry.

The price of TiO2 kept declining in the past H1 2013. According to CCM's price monitoring, the average price of rutile TiO2 declined from around USD2,800/t at the beginning of this year to around USD2,500/t in the middle of June 2013, and the average price of anatase TiO2 declined from around USD2,350/t at the beginning of this year to around USD2,100/t in the middle of June 2013. As a result, most of domestic TiO2 companies have reached a break-even point in H1 2013, while they enjoyed a large scale of profitability during 2011 to H1 2012.

According to Manager Fu, domestic TiO2 industry encountered the longest downside cycle in recent years. In Jan. 2013, domestic TiO2 price continued the downtrend begun in H2 2012. In Feb.–March 2013, due to the traditional dull season and the Chinese Spring Festival holiday, the domestic TiO2 price kept relatively stable, but the price kept decreasing after March 2013.

Mr. Fu deemed that the weakening demand from downstream caused the sluggish market of TiO2 industry. First of all, the biggest TiO2 application field—coating industry also witnessed slowing growth in output. During the first five months of 2013, 4,787,822 tonnes of coatings were produced in China totally, attaining a YoY growth of 5.39%, which is much lower than that of 10.70% in the same period in 2012. Most coatings producers shortened their purchasing interval and thus the inventory cycle time was cut down to one or two months from three months to avoid large-scale purchase and purchase TiO2 upon actual demand instead. Secondly, the export volume of TiO2 during Jan.–May 2013 was also disappointing. According to the monitoring data of CCM, China's TiO2 export volume in Jan.–May 2013 slided to 161,183 tonnes from 209,551 tonnes in the same period of 2011, seeing a YoY fall of 23.08%. On the contrary, the TiO2 import volume has kept increasing since Feb. 2013, which stroke the domestic market.

Although the coatings & ink industry might still be in the weak status, the domestic price of TiO2 is expected to increase in H2 2013 by domestic TiO2 producers and distributions. What's more, the consecutive price increase actions of international TiO2 giants will do favor to domestic TiO2 market.

CCM anticipate China's TiO2 export volume to increase in 2013

Judging either from the production scale or the actual production output, China’s titanium dioxide has grown significantly in recent years and China has become one of the most important TiO2 producers in the world. CCM’s experts focus closely on China’s TiO2 market and have their unique perspectives about the development of this industry. With professional market investigations and accurate data, CCM will provide the most impartial, reliable and scientific consultancy service.

According to the TiO2 branch of the Chemical Industry Productivity Promotion Centre of China, the 2012 TiO2 output in China was 1.89 million tonnes, a YoY growth of 7.7% compared to the 1.76 million tonnes (after adjustment) in 2011. In 2012, the TiO2 export volume to the US, Brazil, India and the ASEAN-5 were 77,000 tonnes, 63,000 tonnes, 58,000 tonnes and 147,000 tonnes, increasing by 15.29%, 34.97%, 11.99% and 19.84%, respectively, compared to that in 2011. According to World Bank, the global economic growth is expected to come in at a relatively weak 2.4 percent in 2013, which is better than that in 2012. GDP growth in developing countries is projected to rise to 5.5% in 2013, due to improved financial conditions, a relaxation of monetary policy and stronger high income country growth. GDP growth in high income countries is projected to expand a mediocre 1.3%. Growth should begin firming during 2013. As a result, we anticipate China's TiO2 export volume to increase in 2013.

On the other hand, more than half of China's TiO2 is used in the coatings industry. Furthermore, architectural coatings accounts for 30%–40% of total coatings output in China. Architectural coatings consumption depends on the real estate market. After it entered H2 2012, real estate enterprises showed more initiative to stock up land than in H1 2012, indicating real estate enterprises consider 2013 to be more optimistic than 2012. Low interest rates along with fixed asset investment and resurgence of the whole economy will together raise the YoY growth rate of 2013 social construction starts to 8%. The amount invested in the real estate industry in 2013 is projected to rise by 17.5%. With the gradually improving real estate market, architectural coatings demand will likely increase and push up TiO2 consumption. Thus, we expect 2013 TiO2 output to increase by 10%–15%.

Titanium dioxide export analysis published by CCM will provide clients indentify export situation with exclusive research methods, to offer the target products’ export volume, price, time, source/destination countries, specification, application, the information of exporters, manufacturers, etc.,so as to help customers predict the future of TiO2 industry in China and make wise business decision.

The emerging titanium dioxide market

Titanium dioxide, also known as titanium (IV) oxide or titania, is the naturally occurring oxide of titanium, chemical formula TiO2. When used as a pigment, it is called titanium white. It has a wide range of applications, from paint to sunscreen to food colouring.
There is much industrial application for this mineral. For one thing, it has very high refraction properties. In fact, titanium dioxide is one of the whitest materials known to exist on Earth, which has earned it the nickname "titanium white." For this reason, it is often applied in many cosmetic preparations to reflect light away from the skin. It is also a major component of sun block to deter the absorption of ultraviolet (UV) rays from the sun, and the concentration of it determines the product’s Sun Protection Factor, or SPF.
As a pigment, titanium dioxide is used to enhance the whiteness of certain foods, such as dairy products and candy. It also lends brightness to toothpaste and some medications. Besides, it is also used as a food additive and flavor enhancer in a variety of foods that are not so white, including dried vegetables, nuts, seeds, soups, and mustard, as well as beer and wine.
In recent years, the price of energy and raw material increases, meanwhile titanium dioxide market in developed countries has entered a mature period, and thus the possibility of increasing production by means of investment is not very big. It is estimated that in the next years, the average annual growth rate will be only 1.4%. That makes the transnational corporations place the hope of future development of titanium dioxide in Asia, especially China.
Titanium Dioxide China Monthly Report is published by CCM. This China TiO2 Monthly Report is mainly divided into five parts referred to Supply & Demand, Company Dynamics, Upstream, Downstream and Price Update, including information of new launch, company expansion, value chain analysis, price fluctuation, etc. If your business is connected with TiO2, the report will be very useful for you as it can facilitate your search for commercial opportunities in this promising market. China's demand for titanium feedstock had an effect on the global supply

China is the largest titanium dioxide supplier in the world. China's TiO2 industry exerts more and more influence on the world's TiO2 market. Titanium dioxide is considered to be a white pigment with the best performance, which is widely used in paints, plastics, paper, rubber, cosmetics, pharmaceutical and other industries.

Titanium dioxide has reinforcing, aging, and filling effect, and is used as a coloring agent in the rubber industry.  White and colored rubber products added titanium dioxide to make it sun-resistant, anti-cracking, anti-discoloration, scales better and acid. In cosmetics applications, titanium dioxide white is better than lead because of non-toxic .Almost all kinds of powder use titanium dioxide instead of lead white and zinc white. Powder only need an addition of 5% to 8% of titanium dioxide to be permanently white, creamier spice, adhesion, absorption, strength and hiding power.

As the protagonist in the pigment market, the recent price trend of titanium dioxide fall and rise, becoming a "Person of the Year" in the paint on the raw materials market. Its latest price trend is more concerned by people. It becomes a hot topic that how the Titanium market trend will be. There is considerable room for growth of Titanium dioxide demand in China. China's titanium dioxide industry will continue the twists growth trends and production capacity, production, prices, exports, demand, etc, will have varying degrees of growth.

According to the latest statistics of the National Chemical Productivity Center titanium dioxide sub-center in the first half of this year ,it is showed that China imported a total of titanium dioxide 82,000 tons, down 37.8%; total exports in the first half of titanium dioxide 228,000 tons, with a year-on-year growth of 8.4%. Foreign titanium dioxide giant price good Chinese titanium dioxide enterprises, China's export volume has been rising. How titanium dioxide will trend? How to import and export analysis and price?

The China TiO2 Monthly Report is mainly divided into five parts referred to Supply & Demand, Company Dynamics, Upstream, Downstream and Price Update, including information of new launch, company expansion, value chain analysis, price fluctuation, etc. If your business is connected with TiO2, the report will be very attractive to you while the report will facilitate your search for commercial opportunities in this promising market.

Henan Billions Gains License of TiO2 Chloride Process Technology from PPG

Recently, Henan Billions Chemicals Co., Ltd. (Henan Billions) signed a memorandum of understanding with PPG Industries (PPG). Under the terms of this agreement, PPG will license Henan Billions to use TiO2 chloride process technology in its TiO2 production and Henan Billions will provide TiO2 to PPG as an exchange. With this license of TiO2 chloride process technology, Henan Billions will gain superiority in TiO2 market in China. In addition, PPG can reduce its TiO2 cost in its coating production, according to CCM’s July issue of TiO2 China Monthly Report.

According to the agreement, PPG will transfer the TiO2 chloride process technology to Henan Billions. In the meantime, Henan Billions will pay USD1.8 million of the deal to PPG; thereinto, USD0.68 million will be paid as the first term payment. For the remaining USD1.12 million, Henan Billions will pay it by selling TiO2 at a favorable price (USD2,562/t before tax) to PPG. In addition, Henan Billions will sell at least 30,000 tonnes TiO2 to PPG in the following five years.

After this agreement, Henan Billions will build a new chloride process TiO2 plant with the capacity of 60,000t/a. According to schedule, the construction of the plant will be finished at the end of 2013. It can be observed that, Henan Billions will provide both chloride process TiO2 and sulfate process TiO2 in the future.

Henan Billions gains chloride process TiO2 technology from PPG mainly because PPG wants to reduce the cost of TiO2, the material in its coating production.

PPG, as the world's second largest coating producer (the sales value is USD14.9 billion in 2011), consumes a large amount of TiO2 every year. Meanwhile, high quality coating need to use high quality TiO2, especially the TiO2 made by chloride process. However, most Chinese TiO2 producers only can provide TiO2 made by sulfate process—it is lower in quality compared with that made by chloride process.

Under the circumstances, the price of TiO2 made by chloride process is mainly controlled by worldwide TiO2 producers like DuPont. PPG is going to help China's TiO2 producer Henan Billions to produce chloride process TiO2 and then make the TiO2 market in China more competitive so as to reduce the high price of chloride process TiO2. At the same time, PPG can gain USD1.8 million, the real economic benefit, after it licenses Henan Billions to use TiO2 chloride process technology. And PPG has learned that the TiO2 sulfate process technology in China is growing more and more mature and the trend of using chloride process technology is imperative. The development of TiO2 chloride process technology in China is only a matter of time. Therefore, it is a proper time for PPG to transfer TiO2 chloride process technology to TiO2 producers in China now.

It is certainly an opportunity for Henan Billions to gain TiO2 chloride process technology. Henan Billions, one of the top three TiO2 producers in China, will promote its position and get more competitive in TiO2 market in China with this advanced technology.

At present, Henan Billions only provides rutile TiO2 produced by sulfate process in China, and no anatase TiO2 is produced. Besides, the technology of chloride process can only produce rutile TiO2. In this case, Henan Billions' TiO2 product structure will not change after adopting chloride process technology.

The most important thing is that the chloride process TiO2 has high quality with its better size distribution, stability, dispersibility and so on compared with that of sulfate process TiO2. Simultaneously, the chloride process technology will produce less pollution to the environment in comparison with the sulfate process technology.

With chloride process TiO2, Henan Billions will gain a good position in chloride process TiO2 market in China because the total capacity of chloride process TiO2 in China can't meet domestic demand for chloride process TiO2. Obviously, Henan Billions' efforts in chloride process TiO2 is promoting the development of chloride process TiO2 technology in China.

Titanium Feedstock Import Volume Surges in China in March 2012

In March 2012, China set a new record in the import volume of titanium feedstock (including titanium ores and concentrates). The titanium feedstock import volume jumped to 430,403 tonnes in March, mainly due to the surges in the import volume of titanium feedstock from Australia and Vietnam. Meanwhile, the average import price of titanium feedstock rebounded again, reaching USD328/t in March 2012, according to CCM’s May issue of TiO2 China Monthly Report.

Compared with March 2011, China's titanium feedstock import volume increased by 80.6% in March 2012, and the average import price of titanium feedstock soared by 101.1% during this period. The demand for titanium feedstock seemed to recover in China in March 2012, reflected by 74.3% increase in import volume and 20.0% increase in import price compared with those in Feb. 2012.

It is well known that titanium feedstock supply has been the primary concern of TiO2 producers in China, due to the insufficient supply from domestic titanium feedstock producers and the constrained supply from foreign suppliers.

Meanwhile, global titanium feedstock suppliers proactively increase prices, exerting more pressure on China's TiO2 producers.

Speaking of titanium feedstock import origins, the top three were still Vietnam, Australia and India in March 2012. The titanium feedstock import volume from these three origins totaled 361,171 tonnes in March 2012, increasing by 211.9% compared with that in March 2011.

Compared with March 2011, the import volume from Australia and Vietnam separately increased by 374.2% and 139.9%, while the import volume from India decreased by 27.1% in March 2012. The average import prices of titanium feedstock from Australia, Vietnam and India in March 2012 separately increased by 65.8%, 119.1% and 109.4% year on year.

Besides, the resumed export from some origins including South Korea also contributed to the increase in China's total titanium feedstock import volume in March 2012.

Nanjing Titanium to be Injected into Lianhua Fibre

Jiangsu GPRO Group Co., Ltd. (GPRO Group) may inject the assets of its subsidiary Nanjing Titanium Dioxide Chemical Co., Ltd. (Nanjing Titanium) into Shanghai Lianhua Fibre Co., Ltd. (Lianhua Fibre), according to a statement released by Lianhua Fibre on April 18, 2012, according to CCM’s April issue of TiO2 China Monthly Report.

In the statement, Lianhua Fibre revealed a preliminary restructuring plan to sell 100% stake in its wholly owned subsidiary Jiangsu Lianhua Garden Technology Co., Ltd. (Lianhua Garden) to unrelated third parties and purchase 100% stake in Nanjing Titanium from issuing shares to all the shareholders of Nanjing Titanium. The two transactions are premises for each other and inseparable—one of the two transactions will terminate automatically if the other can't be implemented.

Lianhua Fibre got listed on Shanghai Stock Exchange (SSE) in 1992. Trading of Lianhua Fibre's stocks has been suspended since March 12, 2012. Verification of the assets and negotiation with several shareholders of Nanjing Titanium are under way.

Previously, GPRO Group attempted backdoor listing by restructuring CNNC Huayuan Titanium Dioxide Co., Ltd. (CNNC Huayuan). It planned to inject its 78.14% stake in Nanjing Titanium, 100% stake in Nanjing Petro-chemical Co., Ltd. (now called GPRO New Materials Co., Ltd.) and 100% stake in GPRO Property Co., Ltd. (GPRO Property) into CNNC Huayuan, but failed at last in 2010.

Founded in 1957, Nanjing Titanium is the earliest TiO2 producer that produces rutile TiO2 and fiber grade TiO2 with sulfate process in China. It was transformed into a private company from a state-owned company in 2003 and became one main enterprise of GPRO Group in 2005 through restructuring.
