Titanium import volume increase slightly in Oct. 2012

In Oct. 2012, the titanium feedstock import volume (including titanium ores and concentrates) in China is 156,451 tonnes, increasing slightly by 3.8% compared with that in the previous month, but decreasing slightly by 3.1% compared with that in the same period in 2011. At the same time, during Jan. 2012-Oct. 2012, China totally imports 2,572,058 tonnes of titanium feedstock, attaining a year-on-year growth of 30.9%.

Paper making industry is in a trend of slowdown. It is estimated that paper pulp price will fall in the future due to its increasing day of inventory period. Global paper pulp inventory period went up to 38 days in July 2012, much longer than that of the average— 32 days since 2002. The period was 39 days during July 2011, the longest level since 2002. The slowdown of paper making industry can also be observed in the decreased operating rate of ivory board—it went down from 98% last year to 95% this year. And it is estimated that the operating rate of ivory board will continue to go down to 83% in 2013 and 81% in 2014.

TiO2 is used as fillings to make paper surface smooth in paper making industry. Paper making industry consumes about 16% of TiO2 output in the world. The slowdown in paper making industry will decrease the demand for TiO2.

In H1 2012, TiO2 price kept up and down due to the high cost of titanium concentrate ore and the sluggish demand of TiO2. In the future, depressed paper making industry may aggravate the sluggish demand for TiO2.

Without Dowkiwi's support of Chinese TiO2 treatment technology, Chinese TiO2 treatment technology is backward. In the past, Chinese TiO2 manufacturers didn't use organic silicon coated agent in TiO2 treatment. Dowkiwi changes this situation that many Chinese TiO2 companies begin to use organic silicon coated agent. In China, little companies can gain relative patent of TiO2 treatment technology now. Therefore, it can be said that Dowkiwi is an engine in China's TiO2 treatment technology.

Henan Billions Gains License of TiO2 Chloride Process Technology from PPG

Recently, Henan Billions Chemicals Co., Ltd. (Henan Billions) signed a memorandum of understanding with PPG Industries (PPG). Under the terms of this agreement, PPG will license Henan Billions to use TiO2 chloride process technology in its TiO2 production and Henan Billions will provide TiO2 to PPG as an exchange. With this license of TiO2 chloride process technology, Henan Billions will gain superiority in TiO2 market in China. In addition, PPG can reduce its TiO2 cost in its coating production, according to CCM’s July issue of TiO2 China Monthly Report.

According to the agreement, PPG will transfer the TiO2 chloride process technology to Henan Billions. In the meantime, Henan Billions will pay USD1.8 million of the deal to PPG; thereinto, USD0.68 million will be paid as the first term payment. For the remaining USD1.12 million, Henan Billions will pay it by selling TiO2 at a favorable price (USD2,562/t before tax) to PPG. In addition, Henan Billions will sell at least 30,000 tonnes TiO2 to PPG in the following five years.

After this agreement, Henan Billions will build a new chloride process TiO2 plant with the capacity of 60,000t/a. According to schedule, the construction of the plant will be finished at the end of 2013. It can be observed that, Henan Billions will provide both chloride process TiO2 and sulfate process TiO2 in the future.

Henan Billions gains chloride process TiO2 technology from PPG mainly because PPG wants to reduce the cost of TiO2, the material in its coating production.

PPG, as the world's second largest coating producer (the sales value is USD14.9 billion in 2011), consumes a large amount of TiO2 every year. Meanwhile, high quality coating need to use high quality TiO2, especially the TiO2 made by chloride process. However, most Chinese TiO2 producers only can provide TiO2 made by sulfate process—it is lower in quality compared with that made by chloride process.

Under the circumstances, the price of TiO2 made by chloride process is mainly controlled by worldwide TiO2 producers like DuPont. PPG is going to help China's TiO2 producer Henan Billions to produce chloride process TiO2 and then make the TiO2 market in China more competitive so as to reduce the high price of chloride process TiO2. At the same time, PPG can gain USD1.8 million, the real economic benefit, after it licenses Henan Billions to use TiO2 chloride process technology. And PPG has learned that the TiO2 sulfate process technology in China is growing more and more mature and the trend of using chloride process technology is imperative. The development of TiO2 chloride process technology in China is only a matter of time. Therefore, it is a proper time for PPG to transfer TiO2 chloride process technology to TiO2 producers in China now.

It is certainly an opportunity for Henan Billions to gain TiO2 chloride process technology. Henan Billions, one of the top three TiO2 producers in China, will promote its position and get more competitive in TiO2 market in China with this advanced technology.

At present, Henan Billions only provides rutile TiO2 produced by sulfate process in China, and no anatase TiO2 is produced. Besides, the technology of chloride process can only produce rutile TiO2. In this case, Henan Billions' TiO2 product structure will not change after adopting chloride process technology.

The most important thing is that the chloride process TiO2 has high quality with its better size distribution, stability, dispersibility and so on compared with that of sulfate process TiO2. Simultaneously, the chloride process technology will produce less pollution to the environment in comparison with the sulfate process technology.

With chloride process TiO2, Henan Billions will gain a good position in chloride process TiO2 market in China because the total capacity of chloride process TiO2 in China can't meet domestic demand for chloride process TiO2. Obviously, Henan Billions' efforts in chloride process TiO2 is promoting the development of chloride process TiO2 technology in China.

Titanium Feedstock Import Volume Surges in China in March 2012

In March 2012, China set a new record in the import volume of titanium feedstock (including titanium ores and concentrates). The titanium feedstock import volume jumped to 430,403 tonnes in March, mainly due to the surges in the import volume of titanium feedstock from Australia and Vietnam. Meanwhile, the average import price of titanium feedstock rebounded again, reaching USD328/t in March 2012, according to CCM’s May issue of TiO2 China Monthly Report.

Compared with March 2011, China's titanium feedstock import volume increased by 80.6% in March 2012, and the average import price of titanium feedstock soared by 101.1% during this period. The demand for titanium feedstock seemed to recover in China in March 2012, reflected by 74.3% increase in import volume and 20.0% increase in import price compared with those in Feb. 2012.

It is well known that titanium feedstock supply has been the primary concern of TiO2 producers in China, due to the insufficient supply from domestic titanium feedstock producers and the constrained supply from foreign suppliers.

Meanwhile, global titanium feedstock suppliers proactively increase prices, exerting more pressure on China's TiO2 producers.

Speaking of titanium feedstock import origins, the top three were still Vietnam, Australia and India in March 2012. The titanium feedstock import volume from these three origins totaled 361,171 tonnes in March 2012, increasing by 211.9% compared with that in March 2011.

Compared with March 2011, the import volume from Australia and Vietnam separately increased by 374.2% and 139.9%, while the import volume from India decreased by 27.1% in March 2012. The average import prices of titanium feedstock from Australia, Vietnam and India in March 2012 separately increased by 65.8%, 119.1% and 109.4% year on year.

Besides, the resumed export from some origins including South Korea also contributed to the increase in China's total titanium feedstock import volume in March 2012.

Nanjing Titanium to be Injected into Lianhua Fibre

Jiangsu GPRO Group Co., Ltd. (GPRO Group) may inject the assets of its subsidiary Nanjing Titanium Dioxide Chemical Co., Ltd. (Nanjing Titanium) into Shanghai Lianhua Fibre Co., Ltd. (Lianhua Fibre), according to a statement released by Lianhua Fibre on April 18, 2012, according to CCM’s April issue of TiO2 China Monthly Report.

In the statement, Lianhua Fibre revealed a preliminary restructuring plan to sell 100% stake in its wholly owned subsidiary Jiangsu Lianhua Garden Technology Co., Ltd. (Lianhua Garden) to unrelated third parties and purchase 100% stake in Nanjing Titanium from issuing shares to all the shareholders of Nanjing Titanium. The two transactions are premises for each other and inseparable—one of the two transactions will terminate automatically if the other can't be implemented.

Lianhua Fibre got listed on Shanghai Stock Exchange (SSE) in 1992. Trading of Lianhua Fibre's stocks has been suspended since March 12, 2012. Verification of the assets and negotiation with several shareholders of Nanjing Titanium are under way.

Previously, GPRO Group attempted backdoor listing by restructuring CNNC Huayuan Titanium Dioxide Co., Ltd. (CNNC Huayuan). It planned to inject its 78.14% stake in Nanjing Titanium, 100% stake in Nanjing Petro-chemical Co., Ltd. (now called GPRO New Materials Co., Ltd.) and 100% stake in GPRO Property Co., Ltd. (GPRO Property) into CNNC Huayuan, but failed at last in 2010.

Founded in 1957, Nanjing Titanium is the earliest TiO2 producer that produces rutile TiO2 and fiber grade TiO2 with sulfate process in China. It was transformed into a private company from a state-owned company in 2003 and became one main enterprise of GPRO Group in 2005 through restructuring.

Lianhua Fibre had bad financial performance during 2009~2011, with assets liabilities ratio of 225%, 226% and 433% for the years of 2009, 2010 and 2011. With a registered capital of USD26.5 million, the company got revenue of USD4.1million and net profit of USD2.6 million in 2011. By Dec. 31, 2011, Lianhua Fibre's total assets valued USD2.8 million with negative net assets.

Jinzhou Titanium to Be Acquired

Jinzhou Titanium Industry Co., Ltd. (Jinzhou Titanium), the only chloride TiO2 manufacturer in China, is on the way to be acquired, according to CCM’s March issue of TiO2 China Monthly Report.

On 20 March, the local government reports that the equity deal of Hongkong Hanxing Investment Co., Ltd. (Hongkong Hanxing) to acquire Jinzhou Titanium has been approved by the Ministry of Commerce of P. R. C. (MOC) recently, accompanied by a Certificate of Approval for Establishment of Enterprises with Investment of Taiwan, Hongkong, Macao and Overseas Chinese in the People's Republic of China. The value of the acquisition is USD94.9 million, becoming the largest foreign acquisition project in Jinzhou City by now.

After being acquired, Jinzhou Titanium will get a total investment of USD121.8 million and a registered capital of USD40.5 million. And it will continue to operate TiO2 production.

Hongkong Hanxing, a subsidiary of CITIC Group Corporation (CITIC Group) will get all the equity of Jinzhou Titanium that held by CITIC Jinzhou Metal Co., Ltd. (CITIC Jinzhou Metal, also a subsidiary of CITIC Group) through the acquisition.

The acquisition, required to be under review by MOC and other five Chinese ministries, turns out to be time-consuming. Luckily, a lot of effort made by local foreign trade and economic cooperation departments has gone into promoting the approval progress of the acquisition.

Anhui Annada Gets Strong Production and Financial Results Last Year

On 15 Feb. 2012, Anhui Annada Titanium Industry Co., Ltd. (Anhui Annada) released a brief financial report for last year, according to CCM’s February issue of TiO2 China Monthly Report.

The company's good performance was reflected by the substantial growth in revenue last year, thanks to the higher TiO2 sales volume and selling prices compared with those of the previous year. Its operating margin increased to 7.9% in 2011 from 4.9% in 2010, mainly due to high TiO2 prices driven up by cost increase and strong demand, as well as larger proportion of the sales volume of high value-added rutile TiO2 in the total sales volume.

Anhui Annada continued to optimize its product structure in 2011. As a result, it produced 38,000 tonnes of rutile TiO2 in 2011, accounting for 65.5% of its total TiO2 output in 2011 (the proportion was 60.9% in 2010). The adjustment resulted from higher profitability of rutile TiO2 compared with that of anatase TiO2. In fact, sources said the prices of rutile TiO2 increase faster and larger than those of anatase TiO2 these years. Generally speaking, Anhui Annada achieved its production target last year—it expected to produce 15,000 tonnes of anatase TiO2 and 40,000 tonnes of rutile TiO2 in 2011.

Besides, the company did well in cost management. For one thing, it sourced titanium feedstock from both home and abroad. For another thing, it made appropriate changes in the raw material structure, such as stopping or reducing the use of titanium slag when the prices of titanium slag went too high or increased too fast.

Pangang to Recapitalize Dongfang Titanium for Absolute Holding

On 23 Dec. 2011, Pangang Group Steel Vanadium and Titanium Co., Ltd. (PGVT) announced that its wholly-owned subsidiary Titanium Industrial Corporation of Pangang Group (Pangang Titanium) will add capital and expand shares in Panzhihua Dongfang Titanium Co., Ltd. (Dongfang Titanium) , according to CCM’s January issue of TiO2 China Monthly Report.

The expansion of capital and stocks aims to support Dongfang Titanium's new sulfate rutile TiO2 project, which will expand the company's TiO2 production capacity from 40,000t/a to 100,000t/a. The new project needs an investment of USD71.4 million in an estimate. (Please refer to TiO2 China Monthly Report Vol.4 Issue 06.11).

By 31 March 2011, Pangang Titanium held 49% of Dongfang Titanium's total shares with an investment of USD15.6million, and Miyi County An'ning Iron & Titanium Co., Ltd. (the An'ning Company) held the left 51% with an investment of USD16.2 millon.

After discussion with Dongfang Titanium, Pangang Titanium decides to acquire another 97 million shares with capital increase (no more than USD27.0 million), and the An'ning Company wants to acquire another 3 million shares. After the completion of the expansion of capital and stocks, Pangang is expected to hold 65% of Dongfang Titanium's total shares, while the An'ning Company will hold the left 35%. As a result, Dongfang Titanium will be absolutely held by Pangang Titanium.

Pangang Titanium's move is in line with its purpose of strengthening its TiO2 business. By 2011, PGVT owns three subsidiaries for TiO2 production, namely Pangang Titanium, Dongfang Titanium and Chongqing Titanium Industry Co., Ltd. (Chongqing Titanium), with a total TiO2 production capacity of 100,000t/a rutile TiO2 and 20,000t/a anatase TiO2. In H1 2011, the rutile TiO2 output of the three companies are 11,000 tonnes,19,000 tonnes and 18,000 tonnes, respectively.
