Hunan Province establishes nano-pesticide innovation alliance

Summary: In early Sept. 2014, with Hunan Provincial Crop Protection Industry Association as initiator, Hunan Nano-pesticide Innovation Alliance was set up. Many a university and enterprise helped its establishment. The members of the alliance will work together to explore the new nano-materials' application on pesticides, research and develop nano-insecticides, nano-fungicides, and nano plant growth regulators, according to Insecticides China News 1410 on October by CCM.
In early Sept. 2014, Hunan Nano-pesticide Innovation Alliance was set up. This alliance was initiated by Hunan Provincial Crop Protection Industry Association. Central South University, Hunan Agricultural University, Hunan Academy of Agricultural Sciences, Hunan Provincial Plant Protection Station, Guangzhou Nacomes New Materials Co., Ltd., Hunan Shenlong Super Rice High Yielding Biochemical Co., Ltd., Hunan Dongyong Chemical Co., Ltd. as well as other units also contributed to establishing the alliance. The members of the alliance will work together to explore the new nano-materials' application on pesticides, research and develop nano-insecticides, nano-fungicides, and nano plant growth regulators, which triggered an innovation in pesticide technology.
This alliance focuses on the following points:
1. Research the pesticide effect on the target, the invasion approach and efficiency of polypides and pathogens, and the improvement of bio-activity and effect of toxic killing;
2. Research the new nano-materials' application on pesticide processing, explore the formulas and processing techniques of nano-pesticides, improve the water-based dispersion characteristics of indissolvable pesticides, and advance the bioavailability;
3. Realize the efficient medicine carrying through encapsulation and adsorption, so as to realize the controlled release of medicines and to extend their durations;
4. Research on the accelerated degradation of pesticide residue to improve its environmental behaviour and biosecurity, reduce the residue and environmental pollution, reinforce the security of chemical prevention and treatment to ecological environment;
5. Improve the leaf-surface attachment, retention, and coverage of pesticides so as to enhance the effective availability and reduce the loss.
If nano-insecticides, nano-fungicides, and nano plant growth regulators developed by Hunan Nano-pesticide Innovation Alliance are successful, it will influence the picture of pesticide field, because these pesticides can resolve the disadvantages of most pesticides in the market: their effect, utilization, environmental protection, etc. Meanwhile this R&D technology will be the driving force of the technological innovation in other enterprises.

Insecticide industry plays an important role in the whole pesticide industry in China and it witnessed great development in the past few years. So far, China has become one of the top insecticide a.i. suppliers in the world. The direction of insecticide variety is towards high efficiency, low toxicity and environmental friendly. From the perspective of output, in recent years, the output of insecticides in China has been declining. However, its output value has been increasing. Specifically, the output value of insecticides in China increased to about USD11.50 billion in 2013 from over USD4.00 billion in 2007. In other words, from the view point of output value, the insecticide business will still be the key growth point in China's whole pesticide industry in the next 10 years. From the issues of Insecticides China News, we will keep track of China's insecticide industry and this can help you know what market China will explore as well as acquaint you with the current market dynamics of China's insecticide industry. The Insecticides China News will offer you the latest information and analysis of China's insecticide market, including new legislations, company strategies, investment opportunities, advanced technologies and quality insecticides that China longs for, crops planting situations and pests stricken situations, facilitating your search for commercial opportunities in China's huge market.

New registrations of insecticide formulations in 2013: an overview

The 5 insecticide formulations with the most registrations were emamectin benzoate, abamectin, imidacloprid, pymetrozine and acetamiprid. They also had the most registrations among pesticides in general. The 5 compounds had 393 registrations in 2013, 32.45% of new registrations of insecticides.

Among single formulations, emamectin benzoate ranked first by number of registrations in 2013—107 new registrations of single formulations of the compound were approved in 2013. In 2012, emamectin benzoate was also the most registered chemical among single formulations, with 154 approvals. As of the end of 2013, there were 455 valid registrations of emamectin benzoate single formulations in China.

Abamectin ranked second, with 95 new single formulations approved in 2013, 86 for insecticides and 9 for fungicides. Abamectin has always been one of the most popular insecticides in China. In 2012, the compound had 81 single formulations registered. As of the end of 2013, valid registrations of abamectin single formulations numbered 613.

Even though pymetrozine did not have as many registrations as emamectin benzoate or abamectin, the compound also attracted a great deal of attention. The chemical, with only 20 single formulation registrations before 2013, had 67 new registrations approved over the past year. This takes pymetrozine single formulations registrations to a total of 83 (4 of the 20 previous registrations expired), as of the end of 2013. The enthusiasm for pymetrozine is expected to continue in 2014, bringing many more registrations.

Among mixed formulations, emamectin benzoate and abamectin also topped the ranking for most registered ingredients in 2013.

The 1,211 registrations of insecticide formulations in 2013 covered 27 formulation types. EC formulations dominated the new registrations in number, with 289, or 23.86%, of approvals for insecticide formulations. ECs were followed by SC, ME, WP and WG formulations. The top 5 types obtained 938 registrations, 77.46% of insecticide formulations registered in 2013.

325 new registrations for pesticide technicals approved in 2013

Figures from the ICAMA show that the number of new registrations approved in 2013 is higher than annual approvals from 2010 to 2012. In that period, the number of new technical registrations in China ranged from 240 to 280 each year.

Herbicides were the sub-category with the highest number of new registrations in 2013 —— 156 new herbicide technicals were registered. The 325 new registrations cover 164 types of pesticide ingredients, including 76 types of herbicides, 45 insecticides, 32 fungicides and 11 other pesticides (plant growth regulators and rodenticides).

Specifically, azoxystrobin had the most registrations, with 18 technicals registered. There were other three pesticides with more than 10 new technical registrations in 2013: thiamethoxam (15 registrations), glufosinate-ammonium(14) and indoxacarb (11). Five substances had over five new registrations: cyhalofop-butyl, bispyribac-sodium, mesotrione, pymetrozine and dicamba. There were totally 30 pesticides with more than 3 technical registrations, including 17 herbicides, 8 insecticides and 5 fungicides.

Along with pesticides with the highest number of registrations, those registered for the first time in China are also worth noticing. Out of 164 new pesticides registered in 2013, 16 were registered temporarily for the first time, and another 21 were granted formal registration for the first time in China. Some of the 37 new pesticides are patented newcomers, such as sulfoxaflor, methiadinil and fluxapyroxad.
