High purified phosphoric acid investment looms in China

Although the falling export and increasing output pushed up the domestic supply of phosphate fertilizer as well as other prime phosphorus products, China still witnesed a rising sales in phosphate fertilizer in 2012. According to the data from China Petroleum and Chemical Industry Federation (CPCIF), 98.1% of China's produced phosphate fertilizer was sold. It meant that there're only 347,897 tonnes of inventories in China by the end of Nov. 2012, nearly 105,831 tonnes less compared to that of the same period of last year.

Thanks to the newly launched capacity of phosphate fertilizer, the production of major phosphate fertilizer products continue to rise in 2012. By the end of Nov., China  has cumulatively produced 14,096,171 tonnes of DAP and 13,183,284 tonnes of MAP, increasing by 17.42% and 24.4% year on year respectively. The output of phosphate fertilizer (calculated by 100% P2O5) reached 18.77 million tonnes in the first eleven months of 2012, up 32.34% year on year.

As well as phosphate fertilizer, yellow phosphorus also saw an increase in production—the total output amounts to 759,313 tonnes by the end of Nov. 2012, increasing by 10.46% year-on-year. However, the rising yield mainly resulted from China's weak economy in 2012, which provide yellow phosphorus manufacturing with sufficient supply of electricity, to ensure stable production.

The booming production of phosphate fertilizer and yellow phosphorus jointly promoted the production of phosphorus ore. China exploited 87.04 million tonnes of phosphorus ore from Jan. to Nov. of 2012, 13.08 million tonnes more compared with that of the same period of last year.
High purified phosphoric acid investment looms in China. With the maturity of the phosphorus industry in traditional area in China, phosphorus enterprises have to find new ways to drive their development. Before 2012, the investment in phosphorus industry was mainly concentrated in phosphate fertilizer industry. While in 2012, phosphorus enterprises started to look to high purified phosphoric acid.

October Issue Phosphorus Industry China Report Published

At the end of August 2011, the total output of phosphorus is 50,772,390 tonnes, up by 30.7% compared with that at the same period last year. While phosphorus resource is still quite tight, which is affected by increasing demand of downstream phosphorus products in the whole Sept. Price of phosphorus products continues to rise in Sep. 2011. And the yellow phosphorus price is also expected to keep growing in the remainder of 2011. What are the detailed stories behind the price uptrends?

With the implementation of several policies like Entry Criteria for Phosphate and Ammonium Industry and New Discharge Standard of Water Pollutants for Phosphate Fertilizer Industry, the phosphate chemical industry will witness wide adjustment. Meanwhile, Chinese government is apt to allocate phosphate rock resource to certain designated large enterprises, so the concentration ratio of phosphorus industry will be improved in a long-term. It's obvious that phosphorus industry will develop in an orderly way in China. How would the governmental policies affect domestic phosphorus industry? And what kind of opportunities and challenges lie ahead?

What’s more, Iraq becomes the second largest phosphate rock region instead of China in the world, suggesting that investors will pay more attention to the Iraq's phosphate rock resource in future. What’s the impact to global phosphorus business?

Yellow Phosphorus Price Continues to Grow

CCM’s October issue of Phosphorus Industry China Monthly Report has come out recently. The price of yellow phosphorus is expected to keep growing in the remainder of 2011.

There are three reasons influencing the price uptrend - the continuously increasing demand, impacted production and increasing production cost.

China's demand for yellow phosphorus kept stable increase during 2005-2010. During this period, the apparent consumption volume of yellow phosphorus increased by CAGR of 5.5% in China and it grows even faster in 2011. As of August in 2011, China's yellow phosphorus apparent consumption volume has reached 475,758 tonnes, up by 6.4% year-on-year compared with that in the corresponding period last year.

Generally speaking, price of yellow phosphorus is supposed to be down in H2 2011 because yellow phosphorus production is booming in this period. But things are different in 2011. In the regular wet season, the main yellow phosphorus production provinces in China suffer serious drought which causes wide electric power shortage. As the direct result of the power shortage, yellow phosphorus production is impacted. Government indicated that the power shortage situation will sustain throughout the winter this year, which means production will be down in H2 2011
Meanwhile, yellow phosphorus also sees rising in production cost, especially the increasing price of phosphorus ore. Since January 2010, price of phosphorus ore has kept in high level and seen fluctuating increase. The phosphorus ore price was obviously increasing in June 2011 when Hubei Province and China Petroleum and Chemical Industry Federation (CPCIF) promulgated their integrating guidelines of phosphorus ore resource. Phosphorus ore price is expected to keep the uptrend with the deep industry integration in the remainder of 2011.

-Phosphorus industry develops in an orderly way in Zhongxiang City.
-Iraq becomes the second largest phosphate rock region instead of China in the world.
-Kailin Group pays more attention to technology innovation.
-Ministry of Commerce releases that the 2nd export quota for phosphorus is 600,000 tonnes in 2011.
-Downstream fine phosphate chemicals see increase in average export price.
-Price of yellow phosphorus is expected to keep the uptrend in the remainder of 2011.
-New Discharge Standard of Water Pollutants for Phosphate Fertilizer Industry (GB15580-2011) goes into effect on Oct. 1st, 2011.
-Numerous phosphate fertilizer producers pay more attention to the utilization of phosphogypsum by the pressure of policy.
-Shindoo is to develop low release compound fertilizer for strengthening competitiveness.
-Entry Criteria for Phosphate and Ammonium Industry takes effect in Sep. 2011.
-Hubei energetically develops fine phosphate chemical industry.
-Price of phosphorus products continues rising in Sep. 2011.

China Continues to Eliminate Yellow Phosphorus Inefficient Production Capacity

China will continue to eliminate yellow phosphorus inefficient capacity in 2011, which helps to upgrade domestic yellow phosphorus industry, according to CCM’s newly-released Phosphorus Industry China Monthly Report.

In May 2011, Guizhou and Sichuan Province announced their goals of eliminating inefficient capacity of yellow phosphorus in 2011. According to the announcement, the two provinces are to eliminate yellow phosphorus production capacity of 59,500 tonnes and 10,000 tonnes respectively.

To restrict its chaotic development of yellow phosphorus in China, the government has announced the Entry Criteria for the industry in January 2009. In the past five years, Yunnan Province, the largest production area of yellow phosphorus in China, has eliminated 220,000 tonnes of yellow phosphorus inefficient production capacity.

The government has been eliminating the inefficient yellow phosphorus production capacity, which will not affect the supply of yellow phosphorus. In contrast, the elimination helps to upgrade domestic yellow phosphorus industry. By the end of 2010, China's total production capacity of yellow phosphorus still had reached about 2,000,000t/a, with the output of 957,994 tonnes in 2010.

In 2011, some yellow phosphorus producers in Yunnan, Guizhou and Hubei Province are going to launch new yellow phosphorus production lines, with total capacity of 108,500t/a which exceeds the eliminating capacity. Meanwhile, the transformer capacity of unit furnace of these new production lines are all above 20,000KVA (convert into production capacity 10,000t/a), required by the Entry Criteria.

The following highlights are covered in the first issue of Phosphorus Industry China Monthly Report:
-China encourages low grade phosphorus ore exploitation.
-Large phosphorus ore exploiters are benefited from policy switch.
-Yellow phosphorus export is still sluggish without special export tariff.
-China continues to eliminate yellow phosphorus inefficient production capacity in 2011.
-MIIT is to promulgate Entry Criteria for Phosphate and Ammonium Production in 2011.
-Phosphate fertilizer industry is to see industrial integration, with the regulation of the Development Plan of Phosphate Fertilizer Industry.
-Enjoying rich phosphorus reserve, Leibo County strengthens phosphorus chemical industry development.
-WengFu Group extends its product portfolio by cooperating with Onoda Chemical.
-Hubei Xingfa cooperates with Dequest to develop phosphate chemicals.
-Phosphorus ore and yellow phosphorus see decreased export volume with soaring prices.
-Prices of phosphate chemicals keep stable in August while see uptrend in the coming months.
