Kingfa signs framework agreement about promoting its biodegradable agricultural film

The framework agreement is reached based on the developmental direction of both organisations. In short, as the spring ploughing   period   approaches, biodegradable agricultural film with good performance has become the first choice for cotton farmers of XPCC, since they have witnessed the good degradation of biodegradable agricultural film in their cotton fields and obtained a cost-recovering reduction last year. Specifically, approximately 3,300 ha. of biodegradable agricultural film was promoted by XPCC in 2012. Kingfa, a leading biodegradable plastic producer in China, is actively preparing for the domestic market for biodegradable agricultural film after the No.1 Proposal was released in March 2013 (the No. 1 Proposal for strengthening the development of green agriculture will set the direction of the Chinese government's major tasks this year).

Kingfa possesses a leading position in the development of China's biodegradable agricultural film industry. Firstly, the company's biodegradable agricultural film has a performance that is comparative with PE material. Moreover, its biodegradable agricultural film has proved to be completely biodegradable and has passed the EU-based EN13432 certification and the US-based BPI certification (ASTM D6400).

Kingfa has even drafted a national standard of the new material industry—the "biodegradable plastic used for blown film" (standard label: GB/T 29646-2013) has got the approval by the General Administration of Quality Supervision, Inspection and Quarantine of the People's Republic of China and the Standardization Administration of the People's Republic of China in Sept. 2013. The national standard is scheduled to be implemented from Jan. 31, 2014.

According to an insider of Kingfa, the amount of biodegradable agricultural film will not compress the orders of existing packaging film. It may, however, increase the sales of its biodegradable plastic.

At present, the development of China's biodegradable agricultural film industry is mostly limited by the high price and disordered industrial standards.

On one hand, the price of biodegradable agricultural film is much higher than that of PE film, making it unaffordable for the majority of farmers.  According to related statistics, the price of traditional agricultural film is about USD2,445.8/t, while the price of biodegradable agricultural film will be over USD3,261.1/t (verified by Zhong Luhua, the chairman of Shenzhen Ecomann Biotechnology Co., Ltd. (Ecomann)).

On the other hand, China has no strict industrial standards for the degradable agricultural film industry, which can cause disorder in the industry. For example, many enterprises including Guangdong Shangjiu Biodegradable Plastic Co., Ltd. (Guangdong Shangjiu) produce their biodegradable film just by mixing PE with starch. Once the starch is decomposed, the PE residue can hide in the soil and still do harm to the environment.

Related preferential policies need to be published to encourage more enterprises to enter the biodegradable agricultural film industry and help ease the problem of white pollution in China.

Shenghong Group launches biological PDO and PTT program

On May 5, 2013, a ground-breaking ceremony of a 20,000t/a biological PDO and 50,000t/a PTT program was held by Shenghong Group Co., Ltd. (Shenghong Group). This program is owned by Suzhou Suzhen Biological Engineer Co., Ltd., a subsidiary of Shenghong Group. The launch of this program enables Shenghong Group to have a whole production chain from biological raw material, PTT polyester to PTT spinning and fabric printing & dyeing, according to CCM’s latest issue of Biomaterials China News 1305.

The newly-launched biological PDO and PTT program is just the first phase of Shenghong Group's whole PDO and PTT program, and is planned to be put into production at the end of 2013, while the second phase with capacities of 40,000t/a PDO and 100,000t/a PTT is expected to enter operation in 2015. By cooperating with Tsinghua University, PDO will be produced by biological method, fermented from glycerol—a by-product of biodiesel, which is different from the raw material of general biological PDO, such as DuPont's PDO.

This program will be perfection and expansion of Shenghong Group’s current PTT business.

PTT fiber is famous as a kind of "memory fiber", but the supply shortage of its core raw material—PDO hasseriously restricted the development of the PTT industry. In June 2011, Shenghong Group’s first domestic PTT production line with a capacity of 30,000t/a entered trial production, allowing the company to become the third one who mastered the core technology of PTT in the world, only after DuPont and Shell. However, the company does not have its own PDO production line, and most of PDO it needed is bought from Shell. According to Mr. Bian, the company’s chief engineer, the outsourced BDO cannot meet the company's production needs. Another industry insider, Mr. Han, also revealed that though Shenghong Group has a large PTT production capacity, its PTT output is far smaller than its capacity due to the supply shortage of PDO.

In the future, after the company’s new program is finished, the raw material bottleneck will be solved, and the newly-constructed PTT production line and the company’s integrated production chain will greatly help the company to win more market share.

Along with the technology innovation and the great development of the biodiesel industry, more domestic enterprises will enter the PDO industry, and China may become one of the largest PDO producers in the future.

In addition to Shenghong Group, Zhangjiagang Glory Biomaterial Co., Ltd. (Glory Biomaterial) also launched a biological PDO program, and the first phase with a capacity of 20,000t/a PDO has entered pilot production in Jan. 2013. Similar to Shenghong Group, Glory Biomaterial also produced PDO from glycerol by cooperating with another university—East China University of Science and Technology.

Zhangjiagang Huamei to launch PDO products in April 2012

Zhangjiagang Huamei Biomaterial Co., Ltd. (Zhangjiagang Huamei) plans to launch its 1,3-propanediol (PDO) products in April 2012, revealed by CCM International’s first issue of Biomaterials China News.

Zhangjiagang Huamei is a new company established by Zhangjiagang Meijingrong Chemical Industry Co., Ltd. (Zhangjiagang Meijingrong) and SB China Venture Capital Limited (SBCVC) that cooperated with each other. They invested about USD24 million to build a PDO production line with total capacity of 65,000t/a. On September 8, 2011, Zhangjiagang Huamei started the construction of the first phase of the PDO production line with capacity of 13,000t/a in Changjiang River Chemical Industrial Park. It is estimated that PDO products will be launched in April 2012, revealed by a staff from Zhangjiagang Meijingrong. Meanwhile, he claims that the company will also launch its PTT products, PDO downstream products, when it finishes the current cooperation contract with Dupont.

Mr. Han, general manager of Zhangjiagang Meijingrong, is proud that the new PDO production line will increase the annual sales revenue to nearly USD173 million when the whole construction is finished. Besides, the annual return of Zhangjiagang Meijingrong will reach more than USD47.25 million after the formation of the PTT upstream and downstream industry in Zhangjiagang Meijingrong.

It is predicted that Zhangjiagang Huamei will become the second biggest PDO producer around the world when it reaches the total capacity. Actually, at present, there are only three major companies producing PDO products around the world, Degussa Co., Ltd. (Degussa), Shell and Dupont. Although some domestic manufacturers have the capability to produce PDO products, their capacities are lower than ten thousand tonnes per year separately. Mr. Han believes that the PDO production industry will be prosperous as the PTT capacity become larger and larger in future.
