China's sucralose export: export share of top two exporters increases in Jan.-Nov. 2013

In fact, compared with most sucralose producers in China, sucralose's price advantage is a key reason for JK Sucralose and Changzhou Niutang capturing more export share. JK Sucralose and Changzhou Niutang were the only two sucralose producers in China with capacity of over 1,000t/a in 2013. In general, larger capacity means lower production cost, as a result, both of JK Sucralose and Changzhou Niutang have the ability to keep export price of their products lower than the other producers' and improve its products' competitiveness.

In addition, it is estimated that there is a strict quality control mangement at JK Sucralose and Changzhou Niutang compared to other domestic producers'. For example, according to Ji'an Entry-Exit Inspection and Quarantine Bureau, five batches of sucralose products by a main sucralose producer in Ji'an city, Jiangxi province were returned in 2013 due to quality problem. Based on this, it is not hard to estimate the difference in quality between the two top producers and other producers in China.

Product with high-quality and low-price is beneficial for JK Sucralose and Changzhou Niutang to attract more attentions from overseas downstream enterprises. Export volume of China's sucralose increased by 360 tonnes in the first eleven months of 2013 compared with the same period of 2012, therefore, the increase of 273 tonnes was produced by the top two producers. Naturally, large increase in export volume of top two producers resulted in their export share increase in China's sucralose export.

Export share increase of top two sucralose producers in China may be a negative message for the existing sucralose producers at present and new sucralose entrants in the near future. Because of the good prospect of China's sucralose, investment in domestic sucralose industry became overheating in recent years, with a sharp increase in national capacity of sucralose at the same time. And it is predicted that total capacity of sucralose in China will continue to show a significant increase in following years. However, the more export share the top two producers enjoy, the less export share the remaining sucralose producers in China can share. As an export-oriented industry, less export share means that the competition among the remaining sucralose producers in China will become more fierce in the near future.

China's cyclamate export: volume drop in Jan.-Nov. 2013

Data from China Customs showed that the average export price of China's cyclamate witnessed an increase to USD1,932/t in the first eleven months of 2013, but at the same time, its total export volume decreased by 4.3% YoY from 24,526 tonnes in Jan.-Nov. of 2012 to 23,480 tonnes in Jan.-Nov. of 2013, according to Sweeteners China News issued by CCM in January.

The export price increase was one important reason for the export volume decrease of China's cyclamate in Jan.-Nov. 2013. In fact, price advantage is the most useful weapon for cyclamate to compete with other sweeteners. However, RMB appreciated rapidly in 2013. For example, according to the People's Bank of China, the RMB/USD exchange rate was 6.2897 on 4 Jan. 2013, but it decreased to just 6.0969 on 31 Dec. 2013. As a result, the export price of China's cyclamate also increased in the same period. Thus, overseas downstream enterprises had to pay higher price for the same quantity of China's cyclamate, which reduced their import enthusiasm.

Meanwhile, China's cyclamate began to face more competitions from other high intensity sweeteners (HIS) in overseas markets, putting pressure on China's cyclamate export. It is reported that downstream enterprises in Argentina, the second largest destination of China's cyclamate exports in 2012, preferred stevia sweetener in 2013. For example, Coca Cola launched its "green cola" containing stevia sweetener. Argentinean downstream enterprises' preference for stevia sweetener could be the reason for the significant YoY decrease in the export volume of China's cyclamate to Argentina in 2013.

It is predicted that the total export volume of China's cyclamate will decrease in 2013, and domestic cyclamate producers may have a negative prospect in 2014. Actually, it is estimated that the demand for China's cyclamate from overseas market has been falling in 2013, compared with that in 2012. Data from China Customs showed that only the demand for China's cyclamate from Europe witnessed a slight increase in Jan.-Nov. 2013, while that from other continents declined to varied extents in the same period. At the same time, the appreciation of RMB will not have a significant change in the future, which means China's cyclamate will further lose its price advantage. Based on the above negative factors, domestic cyclamate producers have to plan for their future development.

Baolingbao competes with QHT by implementing low-price strategy on FOS sales

Baolingbao Biology Co., Ltd. (Baolingbao), a leading manufacturer of functional sugar in China that entered the domestic fructooligosaccharide (FOS) market in 2011. The company implemented low-price strategy to sell its FOS product, which can increase its product's competitiveness to compete with the one of Quantum Hi-Tech (China) Biological Co., Ltd. (QHT), a major FOS manufacturer in China, according to Sweetener China News issued by CCM in September.

As a new FOS manufacturer in China, Baolingbao tried its best to increase the sales volume of its FOS in recent two years (Note: Baolingbao invested USD24.35 million to establish its FOS project with a capacity of 10,000 t/a in 2009, and launched its FOS in Oct. 2010). Thanks to the low-price strategy, the sales volume of FOS of Baolingbao witnessed a sharp increase in recent two years, which brought more profit to the company. For example, the operating profit of its FOS business was USD0.97 million in H1 2013, increasing by 1355% compared with that in H1 2011.

Expressed by QHT, due to several factors, including low-price strategy of Baolingbao, the revenue of its FOS business showed a slight decline, from USD11.06 million in H1 2012 to USD10.81 million in H1 2013. But the company also indicated that it would rather keep the FOS price unchanged with high quality to attract new customers and retain old customers than adopt the low-price strategy. Based on this, the company tried its best to not decline the FOS price in H1 2013, which retained the gross profit margin at a relatively high level. The company believed that its idea was right. Under the impact of low-price strategy of Baolingbao, most of its downstream customers still chose to continue the cooperations with QHT. In addition, according to QHT, new customers such as Dumex, an international infants' and children's nutrition company, investigated QHT to show their willingness to cooperate.

Maybe the low-price strategy is a good way for a company to enjoy good sales performance in a short term, but it is not helpful to support the company's long-term development. And it is the same with the industry. Take Baolingbao for example. Despite the increase in their products' sales volume, the strategy also eroded the gross profit margin of FOS of Baolingbao. Data from the 2013 semi-annual report of the company showed that its functional oligosaccharide business which included FOS and isomalto-oligosaccharide (IMO), was just 24.69% in H1 2013, which was much lower than the one of QHT. The gross profit margin of FOS of QHT was as high as 46.29% in the same period. For domestic FOS manufacturers, it is believed that the correct method is to cultivate a larger downstream consumption market, to avoid reduction of their profit when confronted with the low-price strategy implemented by rivals. Actually, not only QHT but also Baolingbao showed their confidence in the good prospect of the domestic FOS industry. Because of the low consumption volume in domestic downstream industries and its health care effect, FOS will be added by more and more downstream enterprises in China to their products.

In H1 2013, the Chinese government has released a series of policies to strengthen the management on the quality standards of home-made dairy products, especially the home-made infant formula products, in order to strengthen the confidence of the Chinese public in home-made infant formula, as well as strengthen the competitiveness of home-made infant formula (for more information please refer to Sweeteners China News Vol.3 July Issue, p15, Strong management on infant formula may improve indirectly consumption of FOS in China). If the consumption volume of home-made infant formula continues to increase, it can bring more opportunities to domestic FOS producers.

It is suggested that domestic FOS manufacturers should grasp the opportunities to explore the domestic dairy industry, rather than snatch the existing market share from other FOS manufacturers in China.

Baolingbao enjoys large development potential in 2013

Baolingbao Biology Co., Ltd. (Baolingbao), one of the few large-scale corn deep-processing enterprises that may have seen both revenue and profit increase in China in 2012, may see continuous increase in 2013 due to the large potential increase in the sales of its products, according to CCM’s February Issue of Corn Products China News 1302

High fructose corn syrup (HFCS)
Domestic HFCS underwent decreasing performance in 2012 because of the declining market price of sugar, competitor of HFCS. However, Baolingbao's HFCS experienced a 10.27% year-on-year growth in revenue and merely a 0.92% year-on-year decrease in gross profit margin in H1 2012 despite the increasing cost from corn because a large part of Baolingbao's HFCS was sold to Coca-Cola, who had made a price commitment with Baolingbao. On Dec. 28, 2012, Baolingbao announced that the company had earned the pride of "Annual Platinum Supplier Award", the first honor that domestic HFCS suppliers of Coca-Cola have ever got, which would enhance the cooperation between Baolingbao and Coca-Cola. Miss Lv, Board Secretary of Baolingbao, predicted that the sales volume of the company's HFCS to Coca-Cola would increase by about 20% in 2013 compared with that in 2012. In 2011, Baolingbao's sales value to Coca-Cola was USD42.7 million, accounting for 50.8% of the sales value of the company's HFCS according to its 2011 annual report. Accordingly, Baolingbao's HFCS will perform better than others' under the expectation of unsatisfactory performance of HFCS caused by excessive supply of sugar in 2013. But the sales quantity of Baolingbao's HFCS will not see considerable increase because its HFCS production line has already reached full production.

In Aug. 2012, Baolingbao was approved to be the unique feed-grade IMO producer in China in the next five years. And feed-grade IMO, a substitute for antibiotics, enjoys a promising market because Chinese government is cutting down the application quantity of the latter in feed. In Dec. 2012, China Central Television exposed "Fast-growing Chickens Event"–chicken raisers still used antibiotics to keep chickens healthy a week before being sold for meat, which enabled the public to know more inside stories about chicken cultivation and stimulate the consumption of feed-grade IMO in the future. Actually, as of middle Jan. 2013, Baolingbao had built cooperation relationship with more than ten feed producers such as Qilu Animal Health Products Co., Ltd. and the company's sales volume of feed-grade IMO had exceeded 2,000 tonnes, according to Baolingbao's official website. And Miss Lv predicts that the sales quantity of the company's feed-grade IMO will exceed 10,000 tonnes in 2013 and that of IMO (including food-grade and feed-grade ones) would reach about 40,000 tonnes this year, up 50% year-on-year.

Miss Lv predicts that the sales volume of Baolingbao's FOS will reach 4,000-5,000 tonnes in 2013 while it was less than 1,000 tonnes in 2011 thanks to increasing demand for it. In April 2012, Chinese government approved FOS with sucrose as feedstock (content≥95%) to be added in infant and baby formulae, which will maintain increasing demand for FOS in 2013 in China.

Miss Lv estimates that the sales volume of Baolingbao's erythritol will see rapid growth in 2013 thanks to the increasing awareness of the product in downstream industries. Recently, Guangzhou Wanglaoji Pharmaceutical Company Limited, a leading herbal tea producer in China, indicated that it had invested USD578 million to build a new production line for herbal tea with no sugar and low content sugar in Yucheng, Shandong. The herbal tea will use erythritol as sweetener, which will increase demand for Baolingbao's erythritol which Is located in Yucheng as well. Moreover, Baolingbao plans to launch a new end-product containing erythritol and oligosaccharides, which may be put into the market in H1 2013. Actually, erythritol of Baolingbao has seen rapid growth in recent years. The 176.11% year-on-year growth in the revenue of sugar alcohol of Baolingbao in H1 2012 was mainly attributed to the surging sales volume of erythritol.

However, there are some risks in the growth of sales volume of Baolingbao's products. On one hand, Coca-Cola has not guaranteed the purchase quantity of HFCS from Baolingbao, so Baolingbao still has to compete against other HFCS suppliers of Coca-Cola even though its product has been highly praised by Coca-Cola. On the other hand, feed-grade IMO, herbal tea with no sugar or low content sugar and Baolingbao's new end product are new to consumers, which require a great deal of promotion, and the growth of these products will be lower than expected if their market promotion is unsuccessful.

Oversea market is crucial for Chinese saccharin in H1 2012

Oversea market was still crucial for Chinese saccharin from Jan. 2012 to June 2012, according to CCM’s September issue of Sweeteners China News.

This can be reflected by the latest data from China Saccharin Group (CSG), an organization under China Sugar Association managing the production and sales of saccharin in China, the percentage of the export volume of saccharin accounting for the total output grew to 83.8% in H1 2012 from 74.5% in 2011, while that of domestic sales volume dropped to 10.9% in H1 2012 from 15.8% in 2011. In detail, the export volume and domestic sales volume of Chinese saccharin were about 8,531 tonnes and 1,112 tonnes in H1 2012, increasing by 18.88% and 3.56% over the same period of 2011 respectively while the total output of Chinese saccharin was 10,170 tonnes. However, due to the large stock of Chinese saccharin at the end of June 2012, about 5,352 tonnes, it is predicted that the output of Chinese saccharin will decrease in H2 over H1 of 2012.

Demand increase from Asia and South America was one reason for the increasing export volume of Chinese saccharin in H1 2012, according to two main saccharin producers in China, Henan Kaifeng Xinghua Fine Chemical Factory (Kaifeng Xinghua) and Tianjin Changjie Chemicals Co., Ltd. (Tianjin Changjie). The two companies explained that the export volume of the product got improved in H1 2012 over H1 2011 as Chinese saccharin producers have actively developed customers in Asia and South America in H1 2012, which made the demand from the two regions increase during the period. For example, according to data from China Customs, Germany, Brazil and India were top three export destinations of Chinese saccharin in H1 2012, with import volumes of 967 tonnes, 734 tonnes and 584 tonnes, increasing by -5.1 %, 20.3% and 96.6% over H1 2011 respectively.

In fact, Chinese saccharin capacity was 19,100t/a in 2011, taking up about 70% of the global total and most saccharin made in China was exported in past years.

Besides, the low export price of Chinese saccharin provided the basis for the increasing export volume of Chinese saccharin in H1 2012. In fact, the export price of Chinese saccharin decreased further in H1 2012: the average export price of Chinese saccharin was USD5,272.71/t in H1 2012, decreasing by 8.23% over H1 2011. Thanks to long-term market competition and immense capacity, the export price of Chinese saccharin has always been at a low level in the world in general, which can be traced from many countries' anti-dumping measures on Chinese saccharin, including India, Thailand, etc. However, since the capacity of saccharin in these countries can't meet their demand for saccharin, they still have to import saccharin from China.

Significantly, according to CCM International's investigation, it is not only Chinese saccharin that enjoyed good performance abroad in H1 2012, other common high intensity sweeteners (HIS) did too, including sucralose, acesulfame-K, cyclamate, aspartame and stevia sweeteners. For example, the export volume of sucralose and acesulfame-K were about 690 tonnes and 4,600 tonnes in H1 2012, increasing by 137.6% and 11.6% over the same period of 2011 respectively. In fact, Chinese HIS industry grows rapidly in the past years, especially in overseas market, because of the increasing demand from abroad and the low export prices. Moreover, with the development of production technology and capacity expansion of Chinese HIS, Chinese HIS products will win more popularity in global market in the future.
