Many insecticides' price decreases in early Sept.

In early Sept. 2012, the market price of many insecticide technical maintained a downtrend. As of 7 Sept., 10 of the 16 insecticides monitored by CCM witnessed price decline, such as chlorpyrifos, abamectin and lambda-cyhalothrin; the price of the rest like imidacloprid and carbofuran almost kept stable, according to CCM’s September issue of Insecticides China News

There are some factors responsible for the price decrease of insecticides. Firstly, August is usually a slack season for the export of most insecticides, so their prices usually start to decline in Aug. Secondly, the demand for insecticides since mid-Aug. 2012 isn't so large as before and the serious outbreak time of insect pests ended in Sept. Besides, the price of raw materials or intermediates of some insecticides is decreasing.

The decline in ex-factory price of 95% chlorpyrifos technical since this May continues in Sept., dropping to USD5,369/t by a 11.21% year-on-year decrease. Its price once witnessed a little increase in March and April this year but started to decline in May, mainly because o,o-diethylthiophosphoryl chloride (DETCL, a raw material of chlorpyrifos) has been decreasing since May and the export volume of chlorpyrifos in the export peak season (May-Aug.) isn't so large as that in the same period last year. It is predicted that chlorpyrifos technical's price won't largely decrease in a short future, as the price of sodium 3,5,6-trichloro-2-hydroxypyridin (STCP, an important intermediate of it) has already largely decreased and come very close to the level that producers can accept. The ex-factory price of 85% STCP was USD4,784/t on 7 Sept., 2012, down 33.96% year on year.

The price of abamectin products is depressed. The price of abamectin technical powder has been running very high due to the investigation into abamectin ointment in domestic market since April 2012. However, since July, its price has decreased, as the investigation has been reduced. Plus, the demand for abamectin technical powder is weak. Affected by this, the ex-factory price as high as USD94,190/t in this June of 70% emamectin benzoate technical has become history. If the price of abamectin technical powder still keeps decreasing, the price of 70% emamectin benzoate technical will continue to fall.

The price of lambda-cyhalothrin technical has decreased since Feb. 2012 due to strong competion from India. Besides, the price of almost all pyrethroid insecticides has started to fall in the past few months due to the decreased price 3-formyldiphenyl ether, an important raw material of these insecticides.

The price of methomyl technical begins to fall, owing to a slightly decreasing demand for it. However, the price still stays high because of a continuously intense supply. Many producers have stopped production  since Aug. due to the high temperature. As tight supply will continue, the price of methomyl won't largely decrease.

A few insecticide technicals kept a stable price in early Sept. 2012, such as imidacloprid and carbofuran. The room for imidacloprid's price rise is small as the price has been at a high level, although the demand for imidacloprid is still large with increase in export orders. The supply of carbofuran would become tight due to the short supply of its raw material, 2,3-dihydro-2,2-dimethyl-7-benzofuranol.

Fungicide import jumps but export slides in China in first seven months of 2012

China's fungicide import witnessed a significant jump from Jan. to July 2012, but its export suffered slide in the meantime, according to the General Administration of Customs of the People's Republic of China (GAC), according to CCM September by Issue of Fungicides China News.

Specifically, the import volume of fungicides in China reached around 15,507 tonnes, up 24.35% year on year in the first seven months of this year, and the import value of fungicides increased by 34.86% year on year to about USD174.31 million. However, domestic export volume of fungicides decreased to about 42,521 tonnes, down 8.30% over the same period of 2011, and the export value also saw a drop of 11.94% year on year to around USD203.81 million.

By packing type, China's import volume of non-retail packing fungicides was about 14,705 tonnes from Jan. to July 2012, much higher than that of retail packing one, about 802 tonnes. And the export volume of non-retail packing fungicides hit around 31,400 tonnes, almost three times as much as that of retail packing one, around 11,121 tonnes.

The top six import sources of China's fungicides included Germany, India, France, the US, Japan and Columbia respectively in the first seven months of this year, with import volumes of 2,953 tonnes, 2,413 tonnes, 2,031 tonnes, 1,096 tonnes, 909 tonnes and 743 tonnes respectively. It is worthy of noting that the import proportion of the top six sources reached about 65.12% during this period.

Meanwhile, the top six import ports of fungicides in China were Shanghai, Huangpu, Tianjin, Hangzhou, Qingdao and Ningbo separately, with import volumes of 8,181 tonnes, 2,472 tonnes, 2,251 tonnes, 1,156 tonnes, 556 tonnes and 327 tonnes. Moreover, the fungicide import volume of the top six ports accounted for 96.36% of the total in the first seven months of this year.

In terms of export, Vietnam, Indonesia, Ukraine, Thailand, Columbia and Philippines were the top six export destinations of domestic fungicides from Jan. to July 2012, with export volumes of 4,143 tonnes, 2,628 tonnes, 1,862 tonnes, 1,849 tonnes, 1,784 tonnes and 1,682 tonnes respectively. What's more, the export volume of fungicides to Vietnam was far higher than those to other destinations.

The top six export ports for Chinese fungicides included Shanghai, Nanjing, Tianjing, Qingdao, Nanning and Ningbo, with export volumes of 35,051 tonnes, 3,746 tonnes, 1,565 tonnes, 650 tonnes, 545 tonnes and 388 tonnes respectively. It is not hard to see that fungicides' export volume of Shanghai port took up 82.43% of the total during the period.

The imported and exported fungicide varieties were similar in 2011 and 2012. Furthermore, the main imported fungicides in the first seven months of 2012 were mancozeb, difenoconazole, pyraclostrobin, trifloxystrobin, azoxystrobin, etc. Thereinto, the consumption volumes of mancozeb and difenoconazole, two conventional fungicides, are very large in China. The rest ones enjoy growing favor thanks to their high efficacy, broad spectrum and low toxicity.

At the same time, China's exported fungicides to overseas market mainly covered some conventional varieties, such as carbendazim, tebuconazole, chlorothalonil, mancozeb and propiconazole. Among all these varieties, carbendazim was still the largest one exported to foreign countries, followed by tebuconazole.

It is estimated that China's import volume of fungicides will remain going up in the rest months of 2012 (Aug.~Dec.) in line with the current growth trend, while fungicide export may still witness fall to a certain extent in the off-season of fungicide export (generally speaking, the first half of each year is the peak season for pesticide export, including fungicides).

Oversea market is crucial for Chinese saccharin in H1 2012

Oversea market was still crucial for Chinese saccharin from Jan. 2012 to June 2012, according to CCM’s September issue of Sweeteners China News.

This can be reflected by the latest data from China Saccharin Group (CSG), an organization under China Sugar Association managing the production and sales of saccharin in China, the percentage of the export volume of saccharin accounting for the total output grew to 83.8% in H1 2012 from 74.5% in 2011, while that of domestic sales volume dropped to 10.9% in H1 2012 from 15.8% in 2011. In detail, the export volume and domestic sales volume of Chinese saccharin were about 8,531 tonnes and 1,112 tonnes in H1 2012, increasing by 18.88% and 3.56% over the same period of 2011 respectively while the total output of Chinese saccharin was 10,170 tonnes. However, due to the large stock of Chinese saccharin at the end of June 2012, about 5,352 tonnes, it is predicted that the output of Chinese saccharin will decrease in H2 over H1 of 2012.

Demand increase from Asia and South America was one reason for the increasing export volume of Chinese saccharin in H1 2012, according to two main saccharin producers in China, Henan Kaifeng Xinghua Fine Chemical Factory (Kaifeng Xinghua) and Tianjin Changjie Chemicals Co., Ltd. (Tianjin Changjie). The two companies explained that the export volume of the product got improved in H1 2012 over H1 2011 as Chinese saccharin producers have actively developed customers in Asia and South America in H1 2012, which made the demand from the two regions increase during the period. For example, according to data from China Customs, Germany, Brazil and India were top three export destinations of Chinese saccharin in H1 2012, with import volumes of 967 tonnes, 734 tonnes and 584 tonnes, increasing by -5.1 %, 20.3% and 96.6% over H1 2011 respectively.

In fact, Chinese saccharin capacity was 19,100t/a in 2011, taking up about 70% of the global total and most saccharin made in China was exported in past years.

Besides, the low export price of Chinese saccharin provided the basis for the increasing export volume of Chinese saccharin in H1 2012. In fact, the export price of Chinese saccharin decreased further in H1 2012: the average export price of Chinese saccharin was USD5,272.71/t in H1 2012, decreasing by 8.23% over H1 2011. Thanks to long-term market competition and immense capacity, the export price of Chinese saccharin has always been at a low level in the world in general, which can be traced from many countries' anti-dumping measures on Chinese saccharin, including India, Thailand, etc. However, since the capacity of saccharin in these countries can't meet their demand for saccharin, they still have to import saccharin from China.

Significantly, according to CCM International's investigation, it is not only Chinese saccharin that enjoyed good performance abroad in H1 2012, other common high intensity sweeteners (HIS) did too, including sucralose, acesulfame-K, cyclamate, aspartame and stevia sweeteners. For example, the export volume of sucralose and acesulfame-K were about 690 tonnes and 4,600 tonnes in H1 2012, increasing by 137.6% and 11.6% over the same period of 2011 respectively. In fact, Chinese HIS industry grows rapidly in the past years, especially in overseas market, because of the increasing demand from abroad and the low export prices. Moreover, with the development of production technology and capacity expansion of Chinese HIS, Chinese HIS products will win more popularity in global market in the future.
