Anhui Huilong to increase proportion of its pesticide business to 20%-30%

Deng Dingliang, the chairman secretary of Anhui Huilong Agricultural Means of Production Co., Ltd. (Anhui Huilong) revealed that the company's business structure is in transition and the proportion of fertilizer revenue will be reduced to 60%, with that of pesticide business increased to 20%-30%, seed and other business to 10%, according to Insecticides China News issued by CCM in Junary.

Anhui Huilong is the biggest chain enterprise for the distribution of agricultural production means in Anhui Province, its main business includes fertilizer, pesticides, agricultural produces and chemical products, among which, revenue of fertilizer business accounting for over 70% of its total revenue at present.

In recent years, revenue of Anhui Huilong has experienced sharp increase, however, its net profit is decreasing. Compared with 2010, the total revenue of the company in 2012 was USD1,827 million, up by 101%, while its net profit was USD11 million, down by 49%. The main reason for the decrease in the profit of Anhui Huilong is the severe over capacity of fertilizer in China, the continuous weak market, which leads to the decreasing gross profit margin. The gross profit margin of fertilizer business in the company was 7.05% in 2010, however, it decreased to 3.84% in 2012 and further decreased to 3.08% in H1 2013.

Unlike fertilizer unit, the company's sales revenue of pesticide business obtained large growth and meanwhile, its gross profit margin kept at a relatively high level. This is the important reason for the company's determination of focusing on the pesticide business.

The company's revenue of pesticides was USD122 million in 2012, up by 41.03% compared with the same period of 2011 and its gross profit margin was 8.15%, being the top among all of its businesses. In H1 2013, the revenue of the company decreased by 9.55% year-on-year, however, that of pesticides kept increasing, with the growth of 13.22% compared with the same period of 2012, reaching USD72 million.

In fact, Anhui Huilong comes across some opportunities in the field of agricultural produces sales. Recently, the willing of the Chinese government in promoting land transformation is clear and as the agricultural distribution chain enterprise, Anhui Huilong is closely related with land transformation that it attracts lots of attention from investors. The company's share price increased from about USD1 per share in July 2013 to the highest of USD2.3 per share in Oct. 2013.

Investors believe that land transformation has two benefits to the company. On one hand, the company directly takes part in land transformation. Anhui Huilong took part in land transformation in Quanjiao County of Anhui Province and leased more than 1333 ha of land, actively exploring efficient ecological agriculture.

What's more, after land transformation, the subject of agricultural production will change from small scale farmers to large scale farming and rural cooperatives, which will largely improve the demand for specific agriculture service. Such demand will benefit large enterprises with agriculture service abilities.

China's ex-works price of citric acid undergoes downtrend, Sept.-Nov. 2013

As early as June-Aug. 2013, manufacturers increased the ex-works price of citric acid several times due to the increasing product cost and the peak season of the drinks industry, which increases demand for citric acid after suffering losses due to the low price of citric acid in the first five months of 2013.

The decrease in the ex-works price of citric acid during Sept.-Nov. 2013 could be attributed to the following aspects:
First and most important, weak demand for citric acid. Compared with H1 2013, the ex-works price of citric acid remained high during Sept.-Oct. 2013 so that dealers had weak desire to purchase large amounts of this product. Besides, as entering the off season of drinks, the demand for citric acid from the beverage industry atrophied accordingly.

Additionally, China is the largest citric acid producer in the world, and the consumption of this product depends on the overseas market to a great extent. However, citric acid exports remained weak in this period. According to data from China Customs, the export volumes of citric acid were 51,425 tonnes in Sept. and 52,501 tonnes in Oct., 7,155 tonnes and 6,079 tonnes less than that in Aug. respectively.

Second, the decrease in the cost. As the supply of corn has been increasing since Oct. 2013, the market price of corn declined in Oct., and it fluctuated at a low level in Nov. 2013.

Moreover, under the current circumstance of citric acid overcapacity, in order to occupy more market share, manufacturers have carried out low price tactics during this period. Also, towards the end of 2013, manufactures have a strong desire to sell their stock of citric acid to get funds.
It is estimated that the ex-works price of citric acid will remain stable in Dec. 2013. Generally, the profitability of citric acid has been very low due to the decreasing sales price of this product. Plus, with downstream dealers willing to purchase citric acid for stock at its current lower price, it is unlikely that citric acid producers will decrease the price. However, winter is the traditional slack season of citric acid, so demand for it will still be limited, which will hardly drive up its price.

In the long term, citric acid will still face challenges in China, as its export volume may be affected by the European Union (EU)'s sunset review and midterm review investigations on China's citric acid, which started on Nov. 30, 2013 by the European Commission, in response to applications from SA Citrique Belge and Jungbunzlauer Austria AG. The midterm review investigation is mainly to survey the damage form in the anti-dumping measure. The Hs Codes of correlated products are 29181400 and ex29181500.

In Sept. 2007, the EU launched an anti-dumping investigation into China's citric acid, and in Dec. 2008, the EU issued its final ruling.

The Netherlands, Germany, Italy and Spain are the main EU destinations of China's citric acid. In 2012, China had exported 117,620 tonnes of citric acid to these four countries, accounting for 16% of the total export volume of domestic citric acid.

If the EU rules to continue anti-dumping measures against China's citric acid during the implementation term of anti-dumping measures, it may have a negative influence on China's export of citric acid in the near future

Furthermore, the demand for citrate will also have a certain impact on the demand for citric acid, as it is a direct downstream product of citric acid and its consumption relies on the overseas market as well.

Similarly, the Netherlands, Germany, Belgium, Spain, Italy and Poland are also the main EU export destinations of China's citrate. Data from China Customs shows that in 2012, China had exported a total of 42,700 tonnes of citrate to these six countries, accounting for around 33% of China's total export volume of citrate.

China to import large quantity of GM corn from Brazil

In Sept. 2013, the total import value of corn products in China witnessed a MoM decrease of 41% while the total export value increased sharply by 171% MoM.

According to China Customs, in the first nine months of 2013, China's furfural export value was just USD17.0 million, down 47.4% year on year, due to decreases in both the export volume and the export price of the product in this period.

The ex-works price of MSG in China has witnessed a downtrend since Sept. 2013, due to oversupply, weak demand and insufficient cost support.

According to data from CCM, the ex-works price of DDGS in China declined remarkably in Oct. 2013, mainly due to the decreasing demand from downstream industries and the increasing supply of DDGS.

On Oct. 11, 2013, Baolingbao announced that the company had obtained a new patent——a preparation method for the co-production of high purity IMO and alcohol, with a 20-year validity period. For every tonne of IMO produced by this technology, the total production cost will be reduced by 10%.

Recently, Longlive Bio-technology has been committed to developing cellulosic ethanol. On Nov. 13, 2013, the company's project on processing 200,000t/a of straw was approved to be established in Dezhou, Shandong Province, which is mainly to produce cellulosic ethanol with a capacity of 30,000t/a. As early as Oct. 2013, the company decided to build a subsidiary in Denmark to improve its R&D of cellulosic ethanol.

On Oct. 24, 2013, the US Department of Commerce (USDC) announced that it would start anti-dumping and countervailing duty investigations on MSG from China and Indonesia, aiming to define whether these products have threatened the MSG industry in the US.

The domestic market price of corn oil remained low during Aug.-Oct., 2013, and is estimated to continue its decline in the near future.

According to CCM's data, the domestic market price of furfural has enjoyed an uptrend during Aug.-Oct. 2013, mainly due to tight supply, increasing demand and increasing costs.

The People's Government of Jilin Province decided to start in advance the government's corn purchase for temporary reserve in Songyuan City, Jilin Province from Nov. 8, 2013, which prevented the market price of corn in Songyuan from decreasing.

China's total import quota for sucrose will remain 1.945 million tonnes in 2014. However, it remains unknown whether the sucrose import volume continues to be large in 2014 as in the current year.

Discover New Business in Boosting South America Crop Protection Market

South America has played a more and more important role in the global crop protection market. USDA has adjusted its estimation of crop production in Brazil and Argentina during 2011/12 South American growing season and published the estimation of crop production in Brazil and Argentina during 2012/13 South American growing season in May 2012.

It is reported that Brazil would soon secure clearance to ship corn to China, which is expected to become one of the world's biggest importers of the grain, the Brazilian Ministry of Agriculture said. At the end of April 2012, China has agreed to import Argentine corn. Brazil is the second corn exporter to China in South America.

As GM corn from Brazil will enter into the Chinese corn market officially in the near future, the increasing demand from China will boost the planting of corn in Brazil, especially the GM corn. Actually, it was the first time for Brazil to promote GM corn varieties in its domestic areas in 2011. This action brought the large success for Brazilian corn planting, greatly increasing its corn production in 2011. According to USDA, the production of corn in Brazil increases to 67.00 million tonnes in 2011 from 57.40 million tonnes in 2010. In 2011, GM corn varieties' proportion has reached 83% of the total corn varieties in Brazil, nearly 50% higher than that of 2010.
