Sinograin imports 960,000 tonnes GM corn from the US in July

In June 2013, the Chinese government approved the import of two more genetically modified (GM) varieties of corn to be used as processing materials. It was reported that China Grain Reserves Corporation (Sinograin) has purchased 960,000 tonnes GM corn from the US for stockpiling due to its falling price over there.
 
This move caused strong repercussions, since most Chinese people reject the genetically modified (GM) products. In this regard, Fu Zhongwen, a member of the National Technical Committee for Standardisation of Biosafety Management of Agricultural GMOs, clarified that China has approved 15 varieties of GM corns so far, so it's legal to import GM corn from abroad as long as it belongs to those approved varieties. (Please refer to Corn Products China News 1307: Chinese government has approved two GM corns import for further details.)
