Lier Chemical's full commercial production of glufosinate-ammonium takes time

According to Herbicides China News issued by CCM in August, as of the end of July 2013, Lier Chemical Co., Ltd. (Lier Chemical) is still unable to realize the mass production of glufosinate-ammonium technical. The office website of Panorama Network Co. Ltd. disclosed that Lier Chemical's project for 600t/a glufosinate-ammonium technical still needs time to achieve full commercial production, mainly due to the big technology barriers and the strict requirement for safety management. At present, Lier Chemical has been making great efforts to improve the production in the project. In addition, the company can now produce a small amount of glufosinate-ammonium technical. The glufosinate-ammonium technical is mainly used by the company itself to produce glufosinate-ammonium formulation, a salesman of Lier Chemical said.

The construction of Lier Chemical's 600t/a glufosinate-ammonium technical project which was initiated from late 2007 has lasted for almost six years. It is far behind schedule. (For more details, please refer to Herbicides China News 1112 and 1207: Lier Chemical's glufosinate-ammonium always late and Lier Chemical only supplies glufosinate-ammonium formulation)

As a high-end herbicide with excellent effect, Lier Chemical believes that glufosinate-ammonium business will be financially lucrative in the future, even though it is still unsatisfactory at the moment. It is reported that the consumption of glufosinate-ammonium is the second largest in herbicide-resistant GM crops in the world, behind that of glyphosate. The consumption of glufosinate-ammonium is likely to increase with the rapid development of GM crops.

However, the European Commission has recently announced that it would begin to restrict the use of glufosinate-ammonium on Nov. 13, 2013 because the product may cause harm to mammals and non-target arthropods. This will adversely affect the worldwide application of glufosinate-ammonium to some extent. Thus, the policy will also negatively impact the future performance of Lier Chemical's glufosinate-ammonium business. According to the company's original sales plan, 80% of glufosinate-ammonium that it produces will be for export.

In recent years, the number of glufosinate-ammonium registrants has witnessed notable growth. However, few companies in China are able to produce the product.

More and more pesticide manufacturers are showing an interest in glufosinate-ammonium, which is reflected by the registration quantity. As of late July 2013, 12 companies have gained registration certifications for glufosinate-ammonium technical in China, according to the Institute for the Control of Agrochemicals, Ministry of Agriculture (ICAMA). It is noteworthy that among the 12 glufosinate-ammonium technical registrations, eight were approved in 2013 and four were registered before 2012. The number of glufosinate-ammonium technical registrations in China has sharply increased by July 2013.

However, there were few manufacturers of glufosinate-ammonium technical that maintained normal operations for the product in the first half of 2013. According to the China Crop Protection Industry Association (CCPIA), only one domestic manufacturer, Yongnong Biosciences Co. Ltd. has maintained normal production of glufosinate-ammonium technical from May 2013 to June 2013.
