Ex-works price of xanthan gum decreases sharply in 2013

The following factors forced producers to decrease the price of xanthan gum in 2013:

First of all, the increasing supply of xanthan gum. Tight supply caused higher prices in 2012, but expanding capacity led to oversupply in 2013. Deosen Biochemical Ltd. (Deosen Biochemical), Fufeng Group, Inner Mongolia Jianlong Biochemical Co., Ltd. and Meihua Holdings Group Co., Ltd. all put xanthan gum production lines into operation this year. Each of these production lines has a capacity of around 10,000 t/a.  And it is estimated that the new capacities of xanthan gum in 2013 totalled around 60,000 tonnes. The expansion intensified the competition in the xanthan gum market, so manufacturers had to decrease their prices to take up more market share.

Second, the slow growth in demand from overseas markets. Generally, China's xanthan gum is an export-oriented product. While, the demand growth of xanthan gum from overseas was not satisfied. The export volume of xanthan gum was around 102,000 tonnes during Jan.-Nov. 2013, just at the same level as that in 2012. Moreover, in May 2013, the US Department of Commerce imposed dumping margins on Chinese xanthan gum, ranging from 15.09% to 154.07%. The high anti-dumping margins negatively impacted the xanthan gum export.

Third, the less competitive advantage. In 2013, the price of guar gum, a substitute of xanthan gum, declined in the overseas market, especially since July. According to data from China Customs, the average import price of guar gum from India (China's major import origin of this product) was around USD4,993/t during Jan.-Nov. 2013, down from around USD6,533/t in 2012. The low price of imported guar gum attracted more downstream enterprises to use this product. China imported around 4,472 tonnes of guar gum from India in the first eleven months of this year, 1,074 tonnes more than that in 2012.

Fourth, the weak cost support. In 2013, the price of corn starch in China remained low and it has undergone a downtrend since Aug., due to the increasing supply of corn. In detail, the average ex-works price of corn starch in North China was around USD469/t in 2013, USD8/t lower than that in 2012.

It is predicted that the price downtrend of domestic xanthan gum will persist in 2014, due to further capacity expansion. Specifically, the third phase of the xanthan gum capacity expansion of Deosen Biochemical will be finished in early 2014. Then, the company's xanthan gum capacity will increase to around 90,000 t/a from present 78,000 t/a, becoming the largest producer of this product in China. Similarly, Fufeng Group also has a desire to enlarge the market share of xanthan gum.

China's first Agricultural Insurance Regulations issued

Investment in agricultural industry has been hot in recent years, and modern agriculture is also considered to be a potential investment field. Based on the current situation of China's modern agricultural industry, it's suggested that more capital and highly advanced management are needed for building some famous brands and increasing the industrial concentration.

On 12 Nov., 2012, China's first law for agricultural insurance, Agricultural Insurance Regulations (Regulations), was formally issued after the soliciting of public opinions for half a year. Besides, the Regulations shall be effective as of March 1, 2013, according to an announcement published by the Legislative Affairs Office of the State Council (LAOSC).

Agricultural insurances can be divided into planting industry insurance, breeding insurance and forest insurance basing on agriculture category. Among which, planting industry insurance refers to the business of providing insurance to grain crops and industrial crops. That is to say, rice, wheat, soybean, sorghum, corn, cotton, tobacco, tea, mulberry, sugarcane, herbs, vegetables, etc. are underwritten by the insurance.

The Regulations mainly aims to regulate agricultural insurance activities, protect the lawful rights and interests of the parties to the contract for agricultural insurance, enhance the capability to withstand risks during agricultural production and help agricultural insurance develop well.

Brazil still has potential to increase production of wheat

From Oct. 21 to Oct. 23, 2012, the 19th International Wheat Conference, one of the main events inside Brazilian wheat chain, was held in Florianópolis, the provincial capital of Santa Catarina in Brazil. During this event, about 500 people including producers, equipment suppliers, experts, researchers and the public authorities from many different countries attended the meeting and discussed on the theme of “It’s Time for Wheat”, according to CCM’s November issue of South America Crop Protection Monthly Report.

On the second day of the meeting (Oct. 22), according to Sergio Amaral, the President of the Brazilian Association of Wheat Industry (ABItrigo), if Brazil continues to develop the new technology and new variety of wheat, its wheat production still has potential to be increased.

In fact, the unit yield of wheat in Brazil has increased significantly from 1970 to now. According to the Food and Agriculture Organization of the United Nations (FAO), the unit yield of wheat in Brazil was about 886 kg/ha. in 1970, but in 2012, the unit yield is expected to reach 2,800 kg/ha. However, the unit yield of wheat has been little changed in recent five years, plus no obvious expansion of wheat planting area, the production of wheat failed to increase continuously in Brazil during this period. In order to meet domestic demand, Brazil needs to import wheat from other countries every year.

In 2012, due to the higher price of corn, farmers preferred to plant corn instead of wheat in Brazil. As a result, the planting area of wheat in Brazil is expected to decrease in 2012/13. According to the latest report of the US Department of Agriculture (USDA), the planting area of wheat in Paraná, the main wheat production region in Brazil, is estimated to decrease by 27% in 2012/13 compared with that in 2011/12, which will lead to the decreasing production of wheat in Brazil in 2012/13. As a result, the import volume of wheat in Brazil will also increase in 2012/13.

The possibly increasing import volume of wheat in Brazil is unfavorable for the development of its wheat planting. So it’s much important for Brazil to develop the new technology and variety of wheat to improve the unit yield of wheat, since the improving unit yield of wheat will help boost the willingness of farmers to plant wheat in Brazil, thereby increasing the wheat production.

With the improvement of people living standard and change of lifestyle, people need more and more wheat in the world. According to USDA, the world’s consumption of wheat has increased by 8% from 643 million tonnes in 2008/09 to 695 million tonnes in 2011/12. Although USDA estimated that the consumption of wheat will decrease to 678 million tonnes in 2012/13, it’s still higher than that in previous years.

However, the total production of wheat in the world is unstable amid the increasing consumption of wheat. According to USDA’s estimation, the production of wheat in the world in 2012/13 will be less than the consumption. As a result, the supply of wheat will be in shortage in the world. In this context, if Brazil increases its production of wheat, it's believed that it can help reduce the wheat supply pressures in the world.
