China’s BCAAs industry keeps increasing in production and demand

As one kind of amino acids with high added value, BCAAs (Branched-Chain Amino Acids) consist of three types of amino acids, namely leucine, isoleucine and valine. BCAAs are widely used as the dietary supplement among the people involved in bodybuilding and athletics, mainly for accelerating human’s muscle anabolism.

In CCM’s latest market report, Market Research of BCAAs in China, we can see the general production situation of China's BCAAs industry during 2010–2012. As a large producer of amino acids worldwide, China's BCAAs total output in 2012 reached about 4,865 tonnes, accounting for more than two thirds of the global output. At the same time, there are many new projects and expansion projects for BCAAs under construction in China.

In addition to reviewing the production situation of China’s BCAAs industry, CCM’s report also focuses on four parts, namely market prices, demand situation, production technology, and analysis of domestic key producers.

Through the report, we can get both the current market prices of valine, leucine, and isoleucine during Jan.June 2013. The report also reveals the historical market prices of these three products during 2009–2012.

As for the demand situation, the domestic demand for BCAAs is relatively small at present, though China has been engaged in BCAAs business for years. In fact, most of the BCAAs produced in China are exported to developed countries, especially those in Europe and America. In the report, CCM will give a detailed introduction to the demand situation of China’s BCAAs during 2010–2012, particularly the consumption in the food industry (e.g. dietary supplement, functional food, drinks and oral drugs, etc.) and non-food industry, like pharmaceutical injection, also a forecast on demand from 2013 to 2017 is provided.

However, compared with those imported BCAAs from overseas markets, China’s BCAAs are in an inferior position, due to China’s BCAAs are still unsteady in quality. But we can see that the production technology of China’s BCAAs has been keeping improved in recent years. According to CCM’s report, at present, there are many BCAAs producers in China, such as Shine Star (Hubei) Biological Engineering Co., Ltd., Meihua Holdings Group Co., Ltd., Yichang Sanxia Pharmaceutical Co., Ltd., Fufeng Group Co., Ltd., etc. These producers widely utilize fermentation method in the production of isoleucine and valine, while extraction method is playing a dominant role in the production of leucine. To help readers better understand the competitiveness of these producers, CCM will also introduce their financial situation and analyze their production costs of BCAAs.

Accelerated pace of phosphorus flame retardant replacing bromine flame retardant

According to Phosphorus Industry China Monthly Report issued by CCM in August, on July 8, Ningbo Institute of Materials Technology & Engineering, Chinese Academy of Sciences (NIMTE) signed a cooperation agreement with Guizhou Yuanyi Mining Group Co., Ltd. (Guizhou Yuanyi) to jointly promote the development and industrialization of phosphorus flame retardant with high-temperature resistance used in engineering plastics. Guizhou Yuanyi has sufficient phosphorus ore resources, processing a phosphorus ore mine and a coal mine in Weng'an County, which is very favorable for the development of phosphorus flame retardants.

NIMTE has achieved fruitful results in the synthesis of high-performance halogen-free flame retardants. Just on April 15, NIMTE signed a cooperation agreement with Polyrocks Chemical Co., Ltd. (Polyrocks Chemical) to jointly put forward the development and production of high-end phosphorus flame retardants. Polyrocks Chemical is engaged in the production of environmentally friendly halogen-free flame retardants.

In recent years, phosphorus flame retardants have drawn more and more attention as an alternative of bromine flame retardants. In China, the capacity of phosphorus flame retardants has reached 150,000t/a as of July 2013, while the production was about 100,000 tonnes in 2012. With the miniaturization trend of electronic products and the development and adoption of tin-free electric welding technology, it's more and more necessary to develop new type of flame retardant with high-temperature resistance, chemical stability, well electric property and mechanical property used in engineering plastics. High-end phosphorus flame retardant is considered to be one of the major development directions.

Two factors may accelerate the pace of phosphorus flame retardants, especially relatively high-powered ones, replacing bromine flame retardants.

Firstly, many kinds of bromine flame retardants, the most popular flame retardants, have been phased out in more and more countries. For example, a global ban on hexabromocyclododecane (HBCD), a kind of bromine flame retardant commonly used in insulation, textile and electronics sectors, was issued at the sixth meeting of the Conference of the Parties to the Stockholm Convention held from April 28–May 10, 2013 in Geneva. In 2009, two kinds of bromine flame retardants—pentabromodiphenyl ether and octabromodiphenyl ether—had already been eliminated. In this context, it's very necessary to find an alternative of bromine flame retardants, and phosphorus flame retardant is a good option with relatively mature production technology.
Secondly, China is a net bromine importer, with the monthly import volume of more than 2,000 tonnes, and 49% of bromine in China is used to produce flame retardants. On July 29, 2013, the government of Weifang City, Shandong Province officially announced that it will shut down 80% of local bromine capacity within three years in consideration of environmental protection. This issue may cause the domestic supply of bromine to become tighter, since the bromine capacity in Weifang City accounts for 60% of China's total capacity.

Although it is a development trend that phosphorus flame retardants are gradually replacing bromine flame retardants, some properties of phosphorus flame retardants are not as good as that of bromine flame retardants restricted by the production technology level. Besides, the large scale production of phosphorus flame retardants may be restricted in the future in consideration of the scarcity and non-regeneration of phosphorus resources.

Baotashan makes progress in study of fluorocarbon resin polymerization

In Jan. 2013, the research project on fluorine resin polymerization and innovative fluorocarbon coating production technology jointly conducted by Shaanxi Baotashan Paint Co., Ltd. (Baotashan) and Shaanxi Yanchang Petroleum Group Fluorosilicone Chemical Co., Ltd. (Yanchang Fluorosilicone) passed the acceptance check by the China Coating Industry Association, which marks Baotashan takes the lead in researching the production technology of fluorocarbon resin and it’s major technological index has reached domestic advanced level, filling the technology gaps in the field of polymerization of fluorocarbon resin in Shaanxi Province, according to China Fluoride Materials Monthly Report issued by CCM in January.

This project is a new research investigation with high technological content approved. It was initiated by Baotashan and Yanchang Fluorosilicone in early 2011 and was listed as one of the key projects for new products in Shaanxi Province in 2011.

Fluorocarbon resin is a kind of anti-corrosive coating made from key materials and is regarded as the "king of coating" because of its excellent weathering, corrosion and chemical resistance. The synthesis technology for making fluorocarbon resin was controlled by Japan and the Occident until the beginning of the 21st century, at which time China's enterprises started to introduce related technology and develop independently the technology the polymerization of fluorocarbon resin. But the lack of fluorite (its downstream fluoro-olefins are the key materials for fluorocarbon resin synthesis) restricts the promotion and application of fluorocarbon resin.

Yanchang Fluorosilicone, with its advantage of abundant fluorite and silica resources in Shangluo City (a city in the southeastern part of Shaanxi Province), vertically integrates its processing of mineral products to extend the industry chain and improve its share of the added value of mineral resources. Baotashan has a history of more than 50 years in the research of polymer materials resin and coating. Therefore, it has a solid foundation in technology research and a perfect market operating system.

The project proposed and implemented by Baotashan and Yanchang Fluorosilicone has a huge market potential and high application value, by which the companies aim to take full advantage of talent, technology, resources, products, markets and services to master the key technology of fluorocarbon resin and coatings in a short time. After the initial research work, the project has entered a planning and development phase for mass production. It is expected that an automatic production line will be completed by the end of 2013 with capacities of 500t/a of fluorocarbon resin and 1,000t/a of fluorocarbon coatings.
Baotashan was founded in 1985. It is located in Xingping city, Shaanxi Province, China, with a capacity of 50,000t/a for paints and coatings. It has the right to import and export, with more than 200 market outlets and 60 specialty stores in China. In recent years, Baotashan has developed rapidly in marketing, eco-friendly product production and financing. The sales volume and value of its paints have ranked first in Northwest China’s coatings industry for more than 10 years. Total sales value in 2012 was about USD650 million, an increase of 13% on 2011.

Yanchang Fluorosilicone is a member company of Shaanxi Yanchang Petroleum (Group) Corp. Ltd. The latter is directly attached to the Shaanxi People's Provincial Government. About USD300 million in total will be invested to construct Yanchan Fluorosilicone. The project has been divided into two stages. In the first stage, about USD120 million was invested to construct six sub-projects: a hydrogen fluoride line with a capacity of 40,000t/a, a sulfuric acid line with a capacity of 100,000t/a, a dry aluminum fluoride line with a capacity of 30,000t/a, a cryolite line with a capacity of 5,000t/a, a fluoride salt line with a capacity of 6,000t/a and a fluorite line with a capacity of 270,000t/a. It is expected that the annual sales value will reach USD71 million when all the projects are put into production.

Demand of Glucono-delta-lactone GDL to be Increasing in the Future

CCM International has published the third edition report of Production and Market of Glucono-delta-lactone in China in November 2011. The report reveals that the demand of glucono-delta-lactone will be increasing in the future.

China is one of the important producers of glucono-delta-lactone (GDL) in the world. The total output of GDL in 2010 reached about 16,000 tonnes. From 2007 to 2011, the production capacity of GDL has increased a lot, while the output has been dragged down by the impact of the global financial crisis and the rising production cost during this period.

At present, there are about ten GDL producers in China. Anhui Xingzhou Medicine Food Co., Ltd. (Anhui Xingzhou) ranks No.1 among producers nationwide.

The production technology is mature, which is the fermentation method with using glucose or corn starch as raw material. Meanwhile, two major different fermentation methods are applied in this industry in China. One is calcium salt method; the other is sodium salt method. Although fermentation method is relatively more eco-friendly than chemical method, fermentation method still causes some pollutant to environment. Attributed to the stricter environmental policy, the production cost is expected to increase.

In general, China is an important GDL export country in the world. Egypt, Germany and South Korea are the top three export destinations of China's GDL in 2010.

Foods and pharmaceuticals are the main consumption fields of GDL in China. In food industry, bean curd is the biggest consumption field of GDL. Thanks to the fast recovery of domestic food industry, as an innocuous food additive, the demand for GDL will be increasing in the future.
