Rice Diseases and Insect Pests to Seriously Hit Zhejiang in 2012

According to Zhejiang Plant Protection Station (ZPPS), in 2012 diseases and insect pests of major crops, especially rice, will occur more seriously in Zhejiang Province (an eastern coastal province of China) over last year, based on factors mainly including the cardinal number of overwintering diseases and insect pests, crop distribution, weather trend, etc., according to CCM International’s May issue of Insecticides China News.

It is expected that the occurrence of diseases and insect pests of wheat and rape will moderately occur, while that of rice will be serious. Among rice pests, the damage of migratory pests such as rice brown plant hopper and rice leaf folder will be as serious as that in 2011, and that of first generation of chilo suppressalis and rice sheath blight will be moderate.

The total stricken area of rice diseases and insect pests will accumulatively reach around 8.00 million ha. in Zhejiang in 2012 with 0.67 million ha. increase compared with 7.33 million ha. in 2011. And rice plant hopper is the most serious insect pest, followed by chilo suppressalis and rice leaf folder.

White-backed plant hopper and brown plant hopper will moderately to seriously occur, with occurrence area of about 1.33 million ha. and 1.67 million ha. respectively. And the areas in which rice leaf folder's occurrence will be moderate to serious will hit about 2 million ha. The occurrence of rice stem borer, especially chilo suppressalis, varies in different regions, covering stricken area of 0.67 million ha. In the north of Zhejiang, the population of sesamia inferens will very likely rise.

Recommended insecticides to control brown rice plant hopper mainly include pymetrozine, buprofezin, chlorpyrifos, DDVP and isoprocarb; those for white backed planthopper include imidacloprid, pymetrozine, buprofezin, nitenpyram and thiamethoxam; and those for control of rice leaf roller mainly include abamectin, emamectin benzoate, chloantraniliprole, indoxacarb, phenthoate and profenofos.

In addition, rice sheath blight will moderately to seriously hit paddy fields in Zhejiang, with area of 0.87 million ha. Rice false smut and rice virus diseases such as rice stripe diseases and rice black streaked dwarf will hit the fields at a moderate way.

The total stricken area of wheat diseases and insect pests will accumulatively hit about 0.16 million ha. in Zhejiang Province in 2012, more serious over last year. Among the pests, key species to strike wheat mainly including wheat aphid and wheat plant hopper will bring moderate or light damage to the main planting regions of wheat in Zhejiang this year. And gibberellin's damage will be moderate.

The total stricken area of rape diseases and insect pests is predicted to accumulatively hit 0.27 million ha. in Zhejiang this year. In particular, rape stem rot will moderately to seriously strike the main planting regions of rape in Zhejiang this year. Rape sclerotium disease is one of the most serious rape diseases.

Overview of China's Insecticide Industry in 2011--Challenges

The year of 2011 is a hard time for insecticide players in China. The occurrence of insect pests was not so serious as expected; companies faced a year of weak insecticide demand again. Besides, they had to meet severe challenges such as overcapacity and intense competition from foreign products. As insecticide is the most important segment of domestic crop protection market, its bad performance had led most of domestic formulation players to a tough year in 2011, according to CCM International’s January issue of Insecticides China News.

China's insecticide output from Jan. to Nov. 2011 totaled 629,500 tonnes, up 15% over the same period last year. Many insecticides, such as chlorpyrifos, abamectin, imidacloprid and triazophos, have witnessed marked output increase, according to China Crop Protection Industry Association. However, the demand in domestic market was about 124,900 tonnes in 2011, down about 1.4% year on year mainly attributed to the reduced demand for rice insecticides.

In the whole year of 2011, the occurrence of insect pests in China was less frequent over 2010, according to National Agricultural Technology Extension and Service Center. In the first half of 2011, most insecticides suffered decline in sales volume over last year; some even tumbled. The major reason for a significant decline lies in the drought early this year, which directly postponed the start of the peak sales season till June. As investigated, the demand for some largely consumed insecticides like abamectin and chlorpyrifos remained weak in H1 2011, especially from Jan. to May. Entering June, insecticide market began to recover as the rainfall brought about severe occurrence of insect pests on rice, cotton and corn, which lasted till August.

As of Sept. 2011, the occurrence of rice plant hopper in total planting areas of late rice except Hunan Province was less frequent over last year. And the occurrence of rice stem borer in most planting areas is similar to that in 2010. Therefore, domestic demand for insecticides wasn't so high as expected in the whole year.

Besides, overseas companies introduced a lot of products to Chinese market, which intensified the competition in domestic insecticide industry. Some products were widely applied by farmers, such as DuPont's Kangkuan (20% chlorantraniliprole SC), Bayer CropScience's Daoteng (10% flubendiamide • abamectin SC) and Syngenta's Virtako (40% chlorantraniliprole • thiamethoxam WG). As reported, imported insecticides enjoyed a good performance in high-end rice insecticide market, while Chinese products witnessed a year-on-year (YoY) decline of about 20% in sales volume.

Despite the sluggish insecticide market in 2011, the market prices of most insecticides have seen a YoY growth of around 15% due to the rise in both raw material cost and export volume and value. Take 95% chlorpyrifos technical and 95% imidacloprid technical for example, their ex-factory prices increased from USD5,231/t and USD17,297/t in Jan. 2011 to USD6,580/t and USD20,473/t in Dec. 2011, with a YoY growth of 21% and 16% respectively. On the contrary, some insecticides' market prices declined due to slack market demand and overcapacity. For example, the ex-factory price of 95% abamectin technical has kept decreasing since March 2011, dropping from USD80,621/t in March 2011 to USD78,886/t in Dec. 2011. It even reached USD78,629/t in Oct. 2011, the lowest since 2008.

In 2011, the Chinese government continued to eliminate highly toxic pesticides. According to the No.1586 Announcement released by the Ministry of Agriculture in 2011, the registration and production license of ten highly toxic pesticides shall be revoked from 31 Oct., 2011, while their sales and application shall be banned from 31 Oct., 2013. Among these ten pesticides, six are insecticides: phosfolanmethyl, fonofos, magnesium phosphide, coumaphos, sulfotep and terbufos. Besides these six insecticides, another 12 insecticides are on their way to be banned in the future.

As most highly toxic pesticides to be banned are insecticides, the implementation of the No.1586 Announcement should have some impact on insecticide industry. With the withdrawal of these 18 highly toxic insecticides, especially some largely consumed ones like omethoate, phorate and methomyl, the insecticide market will experience some changes, as the market share left should be filled by other insecticides. Recommended substitutes like bio-insecticides and lowly toxic insecticides will fight for the market share.

China's Insecticide Demand to Reach 124,100 Tonnes in 2012

According to National Agricultural Technology Extension and Service Center (NATESC), China's insecticide demand is predicted to reach 124,100 tonnes in 2012. The total national demand for pesticides will hit 313,600 tonnes (984,000 tonnes for formulations), posting a 2.48% year-on-year growth in 2012. These statistics are analyzed based on the information collected from local crop protection stations of 31 key planting provinces/municipalities, according to CCM International’s December issue of Insecticides China News.

Director Guo Yongwang from NATESC said, pesticide sales in 2011 is slack. Insecticides see a decreased demand in 2011 over last year attributed to light occurrence of insect pests, especially pymetrozine, buprofeizin, abamectin and emamectin benzoate with an obvious reduction. The demand for fungicides almost equals that in 2010. Herbicides witness a small rise in demand, among which paraquat and glyphosate enjoy large demand.

The structure of China's pesticide demand tends to be more reasonable. It is worth noting that the demand for insecticides will be the largest among the three pesticide categories in China in 2012, hitting about 124,100 tonnes, up 1.21% year on year and accounting for 40.44% of the total demand for pesticides.

Meantime, herbicides' and fungicides' demand will reach about 97,300 tonnes and 78,100 tonnes respectively nationwide in 2012. The demand for fungicides will present a 7.26% year-on-year growth, while that for herbicides will approach the amount this year.

Specifically, in 2012 the demand for organophosphorous insecticides will reach 91,000 tonnes with a 3.24% year-on-year growth. However, the demand for both carbamate insecticides and pyrethroid insecticides will decrease by 17.44% and 11.87% year on year to about 5,800 tonnes and 3,700 tonnes respectively.

The demand for other kinds of insecticides will come to 23,600 tonnes with a 1.38% year-on-year growth. Also, the demand for acaricides will also climb by 9.08% year on year to about 10,600 tonnes. In addition, wheat seed treatment agents would obtain more market share in the next three to five years, whose sales and application are quite prosperous during the autumn sowing this year.

Strong governmental promotion of professional unified control and the establishment of organizations providing this kind of service have boosted farmers' willingness to purchase crop protection equipment. Therefore, it's predicted that the demand for new-type machines like electric sprayer will be brisk, especially motor-boom sprayer and stretcher-mounted sprayer.

China’s Insecticide Market to Recover Gradually in H2 2011

Guangzhou China, August 15, 2011 CCM has released the August issue of Insecticides China News, pointing out that China’s insecticide market is expected to recover gradually in H2 2011, and even grow compared with that in H2 2010.

The sales volume of most insecticides declined significantly due to the drought in H1 2011. Until June 2011, China’s insecticide market began to recover as the rainfall brought about severe occurrence of insect pests of rice, cotton and corn.

The occurrence of rice insect pests in H2 2011 is estimated to be worse, which will greatly boost the market demand for rice insecticides like imidacloprid. According to National Agricultural Technology Extension Service Center (NATESC), occurrence of mid-season and late rice insect pests is estimated to hit 49.33 million hectares in H2 2011. The technical consumption of rice insecticides is estimated to exceed 20,000 tonnes in 2011, including chlorpyrifos, imidacloprid, triazophos, DDVP, dimehypo, monosultap, acephate and mobucin, according to NATESC.

Besides rice pests, the occurrence of corn insect pests in H2 2011 is estimated to be worse over last year, with damaged area reaching around 44.13 million hectares. In 2011, the occurrence of athetis lepigone, an emerging corn insect pests, gets much severer than that of the average year, which is estimated to strike 2.14 million hectares' fields. Insecticides that can efficiently control corn insect pests will be welcomed by farmers in H2 2011, like DDVP, chlorpyrifos, phoxim, deltamethrin and Bt.

Last but not least, the occurrence of cotton insect pests will also make contribution to insecticide market in H2 2011. Learning from NATESC, the occurrence of cotton insect pests in H2 2011 will be severer than that in H1 2011 as estimated, hitting around 13.33 million hectares. It is estimated that cotton insecticides like carbosulfan, acetamiprid, DDVP, cyhalothrin and trichlorphon will continue to enjoy rise in demand in H2 2011 and some may witness supply shortage, such as carbosulfan and acetamiprid.

The following highlights are covered in the latest issue of Insecticides China News:
