The expiration of US companies' patent protection for neotame would boost the production of neotame in China and also accelerate neotame's replacement for aspartame, especially in view of its obvious advantages like higher sweetness and safety.
The low sucrose price in 2013 resulted in contrasting growth of the net profits of two major FOS producers, namely QHT and Baolingbao. QHT's net profit was predicted to have increased in 2013 over 2012, while Baolingbao predicted a decline in its net profit for 2013.
The construction of the first phase of Guangdong L&P's sucralose project, which has a production capacity of 300t/a, was completed in Dec. 2013. However, the company will find it difficult to make full use of its expanded capacity in 2014.
In 2013, China's HFCS producers have been caught in similar declines in profit margins as in 2012. However, the decrease of sucrose price seemed to be a more decisive factor for the declines in 2013 while the uptrend of corn prices and demand slowdown from downstream fields for the declines in 2012. Moreover, the influence of sucrose price on China's HFCS producers will continue in 2014.
Due to their poor performance in the domestic market, starch sugar producers in China shift the focus of starch sugar sales to starch sugar export in 2013. It is predicted that such a shift will continue in the domestic starch sugar industry in 2014.
The gross profit of crystalline glucose in Shandong witnessed a sharp increase in Dec. 2013 after a drop in Nov. 2013, which can be largely attributed to the increase of the demand from domestic downstream industries and the decrease of Shandong producers' corn purchase prices in this month.

National standard of feed sweeteners passes expert examination
Chenguang Biotech announced a patent certificate for stevia in Nov. 2013
Shandong Longlive's technology center rated state-level
China's sucrose price continues to drop since Nov. 2013, owing to the oversupply caused mainly by the inrush of low-priced imported sucrose and the current weak domestic demand.

Focus of Shandong Longlive's XOS sales may turn to overseas markets

According to the research results, XOS is not absorbed by human body, and it is also not a kind of human nutrition. The function of XOS for human body lies in its positive effect on human's intestinal flora—XOS stimulates the growth of bifidobacterium. The research results revealed that XOS has the potential treatment function on degeneracy autism. The experimental study of the School has proved that the quantity of bifidobacterium of children diagnosed with autism is less than that of normal children, which means XOS may perform a treatment function as it stimulates the growth of bifidobacterium. In addition, the research results also showed that XOS may have a positive effect on treatment for some diseases in which intestinal bacteria are involved, such as metabolic syndrome, schizophrenia and Alzheimer's disease. According to Shandong Longlive, it is estimated that 20%-30% of the population in developed countries are suffering from the diseases mentioned above. Therefore the unique function of XOS may stimulate those sufferers' consumption of the product.

Shandong Longlive expressed that the purpose for the research on XOS' function is to explore the overseas markets, especially the US market. And the positive research results provide such an opportunity. It is believed that the company will shift the focus of its XOS sales strategy from the domestic market to the overseas markets.

In fact, almost all of Shandong Longlive's XOS is sold domestically all the time. However, compared with other functional oligosaccharides, such as fructo-oligosaccharide (FOS) and galacto-oligosaccharide (GOS), the consumption of XOS in China increased quite slowly in recent years, due to its small serving size in downstream products and its low popularity among the Chinese public. For example, according to Shandong Longlive, the sales volume of its XOS increased from 3,108 tonnes in 2009 to 3,532 tonnes in 2012. However, increases in the sales volumes of FOS and GOS are way more significant. According to Quantum Hi-Tech (China) Biological Co., Ltd. (QHT), a leading FOS and GOS producer in China, its sales volume of FOS increased by over 1,300 tonnes to 10,259 tonnes in 2012 from 2009, and the sales volume of its GOS even increased to 1,234 tonnes from just 94 tonnes in 2009.

Although FOS is currently the main functional oligosaccharide consumed in developed countries, its efficacy is not as good as that of XOS according to Shandong Longlive. Besides, the public's health consciousness in developed countries, such as the US, are higher than in China, which hints that products with health care function will be more popular in these countries. The research results offer more detailed data and authoritative conclusion for the company to enhance the competitiveness of its XOS, as well as attract the public's consumption.

For Shandong Longlive, high health consciousness of citizens in developed countries means more sales opportunities. Its large investment in the research was aimed at the entrance in markets of developed countries. The research results are more favorable to the company's XOS sales to developed countries than to China. Under the current situation in China, including low health consciousness of the public and low consumption growth of XOS, it is easier to explore markets in developed countries than China's. Moreover, the new XOS production project of Shandong Longlive with a capacity of 6,000t/a is predicted to go into operation in Q1 2014, which indicates that the company should consider how to digest its huge production capacity of the product. Based on the reasons above, it is obviously wise for Shandong Longlive to focus more on overseas markets than to the domestic market.

Import volume and price of L-phe decrease in Oct. 2012

Recently, CCM has come up with its latest report of Sweeteners China News 1301, in which, an article regarding the import volume and price of L-phe was highlighted. The complete report comes as follows:

According to data from China Customs, both import volume and price of L-phenylalanine (L-phe), a key raw material of aspartame, decreased in Oct. 2012. In detail, import volume of L-phe was about 240 tonnes in Oct. 2012 (the second smallest one during Jan. - Oct. of 2012 and only larger than 212 tonnes in Feb.), decreasing by about 63% compared with that in Sept. 2012. At the same time, the average import price of L-phe decreased to about USD7,100/t in Oct. 2012, which was the lowest one in the first ten months of 2012.

Actually, because domestic supply of L-phe increased in 2012, domestic demand for imported L-phe decreased at the same time, and Oct. 2012 was no exception. Two domestic producers, namely Fujian Maidan Biology Group Co., Ltd. (Fujian Maidan, the largest L-phe producer in China) and Hebei Anminuo Amino Co., Ltd. (a new L-phe player), have launched their L-phe projects with a total capacity of 11,000t/a in Q1 2012, which means domestic supply of L-phe increased after Q1 2012. The import volume of L-phe in China was about 240 tonnes in Oct. of 2012, which was not only smaller than that in Sept. 2012, but also smaller than 270 tonnes (Oct. 2010) and 490 tonnes (Oct. 2011) respectively.

Besides, it is believed that the decreased export volume of aspartame in Oct. 2012 also has a negative effect on the import volume of L-phe. Most importers of L-phe were domestic aspartame producers, such as Changzhou Niutang Chemical Plant Co., Ltd. (Changzhou Niutang), whose import volume of L-phe accounted for about 40% of the nation's total in Jan. - Oct. of 2012. According to China Customs, export volume of aspartame decreased by 22.37% to about 830 tonnes in Oct. 2012 from about 1,070 tonnes in Sept. 2012. Export volume of aspartame of Changzhou Niutang also decreased to 283 tonnes in Oct. 2012 from 382 tonnes in Sept. 2012.

As a result, foreign L-phe producers actively declined their products' prices in order to keep their market shares in China. According to data from China Customs, the average import price of L-phe from Japan, which is one main import origin of L-phe for domestic aspartame producers, was about USD6,200/t in Oct. 2012, which was the lowest one in the first ten months of 2012. But import volume of L-phe from Japan increased sharply to over 91 tonnes in Oct. 2012 from about 8 tonnes in Sept. 2012. The huge volume of imported L-phe from Japan is also a factor that dragged down the average import price of L-phe in Oct. 2012.

It is predicted that import volume and price of L-phe will both continue to decrease in the near future. More L-phe projects in China will be launched at the beginning of 2013, which will increase domestic supply of L-phe. For example, Changzhou Niutang is building a L-phe project with total capacity of 10,000t/a in Xinjiang since April 2011, which is expected to be finished at the beginning of 2013. Therefore, foreign L-phe producers may continue to decline their prices to maintain their position in China.
