Shandong Polymer is a leading enterprise in the domestic EOR industry with a capacity of 33,000t/a anion PAM (APAM) and 12,000t/a cationic PAM (CPAM), among which, 10,000t/a APAM and 10,000t/a CPAM were put into production in April 2012 and Dec. 2009, respectively. With this newly-released capacity, Shandong Polymer can take the second place in the domestic PAM industry. Moreover, in Dec. 2012, the company started a new program to double its AM capacity.

Shandong Polymer Bio-chemicals Co., Ltd. (Shandong Polymer) signed again a supply contract with Sinopec Shengli Oilfield Company (Shengli Oilfield) on March 19, 2013. According to the contract, Shandong Polymer will supply 13,500 tons of polyacrylamide (PAM) during the period of March 19, 2013-Aug. 21, 2013. The contract values USD35.4 million, about 38.09% of Shandong Polymer's total revenue in 2012.
 
In fact, Shandong Polymer has just completed one supply contract worth USD34.7 million with Shengli Oilfield, supplying about 13,300 tones of PAM during the period of Oct. 26, 2012-Feb. 28, 2013.

China will lift the ban on the disposable foam tableware from May 1, 2013

On Feb. 26, 2013, the National Development and Reform Commission adjusted some items of the Guidance Catalogue for Industrial Structure Adjustment (2011 Version). It's surprising that China will lift the ban on the disposable foam tableware from May 1, 2013, which may exert an effect on the market of biodegradable plastics. Generally, the disposable foam tableware refers to the polystyrene (PS) tableware.

As concerns over the damage to the environment caused by the traditional foam plastics, the biodegradable foam plastics can be accepted by market players more easily.
 
Packaging may be the main application field of foam material, while the demand from electrical products, food and some other goods with a high shockproof requirement may become stronger. Bio-plus has already designed some cushion packages, tableware and cups using PLA foam material. Building facilities, public equipment, automotive and electrical components with high environmental protection requirements are also potential consumers of PLA foam material and some European automobile producers have already started to make use of PLA foam plastics. China to set up a general administration of food and drug

China plans to set up a general administration to enhance the status of the existing State Administration of Food and Drug in order to improve food and drug safety, according to a report to be delivered by State Councilor Ma Kai on March 10, 2013.
 
The proposed ministry-level General Administration of Food and Drug will be responsible for carrying out a unified supervision on food and drug safety and quality in the process of production, circulation and consumption. The General Administration of Food and Drug will integrate the responsibilities of the Food Safety Commission Office of the State Council, the State Food and Drug Administration, the production aspects of food safety supervision of the General Administration of Quality Supervision, Inspection and Quarantine of China, and, the circulation of food safety supervision of the State Administration for Industry and Commerce of China.
 
Overlapping of supervision from different departments and some supervision "blind spots" are weak links of the current food safety supervision system, the report says. Some expert says that the industrial development is expected to promote since the complicated degree of administrative examination and approval will greatly simplify, after the new general administration for food and drug setting up.

Syngenta: Financial results for Latin America

Latin America sales increased by 12% as volume increased by 11% while sales prices increased by 2 %, partially offset by a 1% unfavorable currency effect. Crop protection sales increased by 12%, 13% at constant exchange rates, with a volume increase of 11% and a price increase of 2%. Sales in the first quarter were impacted negatively by severe drought in the region, but recovered strongly as high commodity prices, especially in soybeans, led to increased acreage and higher usage of modern crop protection products. The drive to increase sugar cane productivity in the region also contributed to strong growth in herbicide sales.
 
Seeds sales increased by 17%, 18% at constant exchange rates with volume increasing by 17% and local currency prices increasing by 1% mainly due to increased corn and soybean sales from increased acreage and a strong second season in Brazil, and as well from estimated market share gains. 
 
Additionally the company confirmed a USD50 million investment to build a new processing plant for corn and sunflower seeds in Argentina, confirming its long-term commitment to argentine agriculture.

Production of propanil during 1970s and 1990s

In 2012, the export volume of Chinese homemade propanil is sharply increasing, due to rising overseas demand, especially from Africa. In the next few years, this trend will continue, but growth is predicted not to increase as much as it did in 2012. There is still a chance for the propanil industry to further change its gloomy situation before 2012 if its future export remains stable. Actually, the domestic supply of propanil in China far exceeds its demand. Chinese propanil import is so small that CCM does not conduct import analysis on it.

In the 1970s, the former Shenyang Pesticide Factory was engaged in producing propanil. Then the production was stopped for a long time for some particular reason. In the 1990s, a large number of manufacturers were engaging in propanil production. However, the production was unstable and many of them had given up their production during these years. Later, some companies took a fancy to the market potential of propanil in China and set up production lines or enlarged their production capacities. Thus after 2000, the production of propanil developed rapidly in China.

As an old variety of herbicide, propanil has been produced in China for 50 years. There were four pioneer propanil producers in China: Formerly Wushun Pesticide Factory (500 t/a 20% EC) Formerly Hegang Pesticide Factory (200 t/a 20% EC) Formerly Hengyang Pesticide Factory Formerly Beijing Double-Bridge Pesticide Factory. However, little progress had been made in the following decades. The latter two manufacturers even closed or changed into other enterprises.

In some foreign countries, use of propanil is forbidden or restricted. In July 2003, Dow AgroSciences LLC, RiceCo LLC and Agrilliance LLC voluntarily asked to amend or cancel their product registrations to terminate the use of propanil on small grains. According to Commission Implementing Regulation (EU) No. 1078/2011, the placing of the active substance propanil products on the market doesn't have approval in the EU because of health concerns.
