Sinochem Agro introducing new diamide insecticides

Recently, Sinochem Agro Co., Ltd. (Sinochem Agro) introduced new diamide insecticides with its own intellectual property rights. In late-April, 2013, Shenyang Sciencreat Chemicals Co., Ltd. (Shenyang Sciencreat), a subsidiary of Shenyang Research Institute of the Chemical Industry (SYRICI, one of Sinochem Agro's research institutes) has secured registrations of its new product namely SYP-9080 (Chinese name: Silvchongxian'an) which is a new species of diamides researched by SYRICI. Sinochem Agro claimed that it and two subsidiaries——SYRICI and Zhejiang Research Institute of Chemical Industry (ZJRICI) would jointly introduce more diamide insecticides to the market.

Registration of silvchongxian'an (SYP-9080) obtained by Shenyang Sciencreat in China, as 13 July, 2013:
No. Product Specification Reg. code Effective date Expiry date Target
1 Silvchongxian'an 95% TC LS20130224 2013.04.28 2014.04.28 /
2 Silvchongxian'an 10% SC LS20130225 2013.04.28 2014.04.28 Rice (rice leaf roller)

SYP-9080 acts on ryanodine receptors as its insecticidal mechanism, with a similar structure to chlorantraniliprole which is the most popular diamide insecticide for the control of rice pests in the domestic market. Its full chemical name is: 3-Bromo-N-(2,4-chloro-6-(methylformamide)phenyl)-1-(3,5-chloro-2-pyridinyl)-1H-pyrazole-5-carboxamide, with CAS No. 1104384-14-6. Its insecticidal activity and spectrum are similar to the latter's. According to the introduction from SYRICI, SYP-9080 shows high efficacy against not only rice leaf roller, but also Diamondback moth, Chilo suppressalis Walker, cabbage caterpillar and other lepidopterous insect pests.

Own intellectual property rights and similar features with chlorantraniliprole are considered two superior qualities of SYP-9080, which could facilitate its promotion in the market. It is speculated that SYP-9080 is targeted at the high-class insecticide market, challenging foreign patented diamide insecticide, such as chlorantraniliprole. In advertising the new product, sellers and dealers allege that SYP-9080 is the third generation of diamide insecticides created by the Chinese, and is a new product created by structureal renewal of chlorantraniliprole. As a home-made product with lower operating costs than imported patented products, SYP-9080 could be given a price a little lower than chlorantraniliprole, strengthening its market competitiveness.

Meanwhile, as the product is developed by Sinochem Agro itself with patent protection, it is superior to the generic products of most pesticide companies in the domestic industry. Marketing proprietary products could facilitate brand awareness enhancement and stable profits.

It seems that Sinochem Agro is eager to develop more proprietary diamide insecticides in the coming years. According to Sinochem Agro, it together with SYRICI and ZRICI would enhance their interactive cooperation and discussion for introducing a series of diamide insecticides. Against this backdrop, it is believed that ZJ4042, which is one of the diamide insecticides created by ZRICI in recent years, would enter the market quickly in the near future.
Its chemical name is 3-chloro-N2-1-methyl-1-cyano-ethyl-N1-[2-methyl-4-(1,2,2,2-tetrafluoro-1-trifluoromethyl-ethyl)-phenyl]-phthalamide, with a similar structure to that of another diamide insecticide namely flubendiamide. In Sept. 2012, an on-the-spot field-application demonstration of ZJ4042 was successfully held by ZRICI in Shaoxing City, Zhejiang Province. See Insecticide China News Volume 05 Issued 11 on Page four, ZJ4042 a new fluorine insecticide achieves field application.

Sinochem Agro, as one of the centrally-administered state-owned enterprises in the domestic pesticide industry, possesses abundant funds and R&D ability for the research and development of new pesticides. Li Zhaoqiang, the chief marketing officer of Sinochem Agro said that Sinochem Group would firmly insist on creating and developing pesticides with its own intellectual property rights by Chinese.

However, most "self-developed" pesticides are actually the result of small modifications to the activity structure of foreign patented products, indicating that the innovation of China's pesticides is still in the primary stage.
