The Herbicide
Development and Application Exchange Meeting (Exchange Meeting) was held on
22-24 March 2013 in Hefei City, Anhui Province. Given the serious situation of
glyphosate-resistant weeds, mixed glyphosate formulations will be the
mainstream glyphosate formulations in China in the coming years, according to CCM’s latest monthly report, Glyphsoate China Monthly Report 1304.
"The
situation of glyphosate-resistant weeds is very
serious in China at present. Take the resistance of eleusine indica gaertn to
glyphosate for example; its relative resistance index was 11 in the Yangcun
Town of Huizhou City, meaning that the use volume is 11 times higher than the
normal in order to kill eleusine indica gaertn. Mixed glyphosate formulations
will be one of the most important methods for slowing down the growth of weeds'
resistance to glyphosate in the future" said Mr. Zhang, a weed expert of
the Institute of Plant Protection, Chinese Academy of Agricultural Sciences.
Besides many weed
experts in the Exchange Meeting believed that mixed glyphosate formulation is
expected to be the mainstream glyphosate formulation in China in the coming
years, some glyphosate manufacturers have foreseen that mixed glyphosate
formulations will take up more and more market shares. They have already
introduced some mixed glyphosate formulations into the market or obtained more
and more registrations for mixed glyphosate formulations.
The companies
that introduced mixed glyphosate formulations into market, Anhui Huaxing
Chemical Industry Co., Ltd. (Anhui Huaxing) and Guangxi Sanjing Chemical
Technology Co., Ltd. (Guangxi Sanjing) are pioneers.
During the
Exchange Meeting, Anhui Huaxing seriously recommended its mixed glyphosate
formulation—MCPA-sodium•glyphosate 46.5% AS. "Our company will obtain more
and more glyphosate market shares in the domestic market, and glyphosate
products are our competitive products, including mixed glyphosate
formulations", said Mrs. Wang, Vice
President of Anhui Huaxing.
Another
glyphosate manufacturer, namely Guangxi Sanjing, also introduced its mixed
glyphosate formulation—2,4-D acid•glyphosate 32% AS. "Facing the serious
situation of glyphosate-resistant weeds, our company placed a lot of confidence
on our mixed glyphosate formulation. We are not only the first company to
research on and produce 2,4-D acid•glyphosate 32% AS, but also the only
registration certificate holder for it in China at present", said Mr.
Song, General Manager of Guangxi Sanjing.
The registration
of mixed glyphosate formulations will be one of the most important. In 2012, 82
manufacturers achieved a total of 97 new registrations of glyphosate products,
among which about 11% are mixed glyphosate formulation registrations. More and
more glyphosate manufacturers realize the importance of mixed glyphosate
formulation. Therefore, their registration will surely increase in the coming
years.
The development
of glyphosate-resistant weeds is deteriorating, numbering 24 in the world up to
now (FIGURE 15), mainly attributed to the frequent and large-scale use of
single glyphosate formulation for about 40 years. Apart from mixed glyphosate
formulations, the improving glyphosate formulation technology, changing tillage
mode (crop rotation), etc. can also slow down the growth of weeds' resistance
to glyphosate.
